1 INT. LABORATORY – NIGHT
[Track 1: Everything Is About To Change] Pulsating. A thick white glow blinds Zach as he stumbles around, feeling for something to latch onto, hold firmly and steady himself. Suddenly, he feels a pair of hands ensnare him, and again his orientation is thrown out of the window. He groggily moans, mumbling, as a loud noise blares into his ears. Slowly, he begins to adjust as the noise settles and he realises, someone is speaking to him – it's a familiar Northern cadence, comforting and reassuring.
DOCTOR
Zach, just keep breathing, can you do that for me? Keep breathing, you're doing excellently.
ZACH
Doc… Doc… Doctor…?
DOCTOR
That's right. Don't try and speak, just focus on your breathing. You've been struck by time sickness, a bit like jet lag but a hundred times worse. Time travel without a capsule has that risk, especially for first-timers. It'll wear off soon, just keep breathing.
Another voice comes into earshot, and he feels a cold metal cylinder thrust into his hands – the lights are beginning to soften, and silhouettes are forming.
BELA
Here we go.
DOCTOR
Drink that for me.
He slowly moves it to his mouth, but splutters as he gulps.
DOCTOR
It's not going to taste nice, but you need to keep going, mate. You're doing so well.
Hesitantly, he begins to down the liquid again, grimacing at each drop that streams down his tongue until it's all gone.
DOCTOR
That's it, well done. Now give me that.
ZACH
It takes like cow's piss.
BELA
Why do you know that taste?
The Doctor takes the cup away from him and starts to pivot him, sitting him against a concrete pillar, his head continually throbbing.
DOCTOR
Keep breathing for me, and try not to make any sudden movements.
ZACH
This… Ugh-
Immediately vomit is expelled from his mouth and onto the floor, coughing intensely.
GEDEON
Oh, isn't that pleasant.
DOCTOR
I thought you were helping the others! Check the security.
MARYA
That's what we came to warn you about – authorities are headed this way, two blocks down. The breach filters are up, should buy us some more time, but we've got to move now.
DOCTOR
Zach's not fit to move.
GEDEON
Then we'll have to leave him.
BELA
He looked after me, we're not leaving him.
GEDEON
What happened to you both on that mission? Started off as agents of the Rebellion, now you're soppy, overemotional-
MARYA
Overemotional?
DOCTOR
Guys! Please.
ZACH
We have to go?
DOCTOR
You're not ready.
ZACH
No, I can see again… my vision's coming back.
Zach is now sat in a pristine laboratory – the lights are dimmed and there are barely any windows, to avoid suspicion on the contents of what's going on inside – there is a lot of equipment set up, tied to a large, glowing sphere in the centre of the room – presumably what they just came through. A few scientists, unbeknownst to Zach, are packing up, and the Doctor, Marya, Bela and Gedeon are all standing around him.
ZACH
Let's move.
DOCTOR
Stay close to me, okay?
GEDEON
A bit of hustle, then! We don't want to be on the tail-end of the evacuation line, do we?! Move it, come on!
The Doctor and Bela help Zach up as they clamber towards the door, with the rest of the occupants in the room.
2 INT. LANDING – NIGHT
They are joined by a small group of soldiers on the landing of a completely different room, damp and dingy, with stone bricks and moss rotting away. Once again, Zach is disoriented by this.
OSTAIA
That everyone? Good. We'll be taking the rear, covering fire if they get through the defences.
The group all sprint down the stairs, as the lights fluctuate.
OSTAIA
They're dampening the energy field, we're losing power.
DOCTOR
The breach filter.
OSTAIA
The plan still stands, we're taking the rear, now shift!
The window smashes, and an explosive detonates behind them, the floor that they were just on gives way – they barely escaped with their lives, screaming.
3 INT. HALLWAY – NIGHT
They sprint down the stairs, where a wall has slid down to reveal a similarly-lit, metal passage.
GEDEON
Move it, ladies!
Suddenly, the front door emits a loud crash – a dent is formed, and another- BANG! and another- BANG!
DOCTOR
Zach, stay by me!
The soldiers form up, pointing their guns at the door.
BELA
Ostaia, come on!
OSTAIA
We've got to stay this side and lockdown the door, shut off the power! Go!
BELA
Ostaia-
OSTAIA
I said go, Bela! Go!
Marya grabs Bela and drags her away. The door suddenly comes crashing down, and the hallway is erupted in flashlights and laser fire, yells and screams.
4 INT. PASSAGE – NIGHT
They keep moving down the narrow passage, hearing the echoes of the gunfight behind them, panting and sweat dripping down their head.
GEDEON
I picked up another time bomb, outta way!
DOCTOR
Gedeon, no! Not this close to the weak nexus, you saw what it did in 1854! It took everything we could to seal that rupture!
Marya suddenly slams against the wall, and a panel springs open with a flat button. She presses it excitedly.
MARYA
Wait for it, wait for it…!
A blockade of red light separates the group from the door, but then it fades away.
MARYA
No! That stupid energy dampener!
DOCTOR
Don't you have reserves?
MARYA
Back at the base!
BELA
Which is under siege.
MARYA
Yes, I got that, thanks sweetheart!
BELA
Don't call me sweetheart!
ZACH
Just move your arse, come on!
They continue down the corridor, but Gedeon tries to turn around – The Doctor tries to keep shoving him forward, as he's at the front, but Gedeon pushes past her, making his way to the back, unlinking a grenade-shaped object from his belt.
GEDEON
Everyone, get ready!
DOCTOR
Gedeon, no!
Gedeon chucks it down the passage, and they all wait in anticipation. Men in heavily armed metal armour in a leather coating, wearing gas masks and guns slung around their shoulders burst into the passage, but are only visible for a few seconds. The grenade blasts wide open, with a loud crash and-
FADE TO WHITE:
5 EXT. ALLEYWAY – NIGHT
The Doctor, Marya, Zach, Gedeon and Bela all climb out of a badly-dug hole in the ground, hiding behind some old bins, coughing and wheezing.
GEDEON
Standard grenade. Blocked the passage.
BELA
Up here.
They follow the rest of the rebels up a fire escape, the metal staircase juddering as they race up it towards the rooftop.
MARYA
I have to admit, that was kinda cool.
ZACH
Yeah, gotta love lung cancer.
He shakes his head disapprovingly.
6 EXT. ROOFTOP – NIGHT
They jump onto the roof, where all the rebels are basing themselves, recovering from the harrowing escape, counting losses and catching their breath.
SARA
You took your time. What happened back there?
BELA
Sorry, ma'am. Ostaia… Ostaia and her squadron are dead. The tunnel's been blocked off. Should slow them down at least.
Zach stares out onto the city skyline – a large, industrial city, stretching for miles, buried in a smoggy, dark layer of smoke. The Doctor steps up to him and slings her arm around his shoulder.
DOCTOR
Welcome to the future. Crimea, the 28th Century.
Zach's face is concocting a mix of emotions – elements of awe, beauty at the sight of his own future, but fear and loss at the grey, corporate stamp that is emblazoned upon it. [Track 1 ends]
ROLL TITLES
7 EXT. THE CAPITOL – NIGHT
[Track 2: Someone At The Window] Pan across the city – it's a lot of the same; grey, lifeless skyscrapers, shaped in a unique and modern style, but all essentially the same. In the streets far below, silence, fear and lenience lie in the hearts of the citizens, being watched over by the authorities, patrolling and throwing random people against the wall for inspection. In the centre of the capitol stands the tallest tower, with a huge dome atop it – easily the most significant of the Capitol: The Overlord's HQ.
8 INT. THE OVERLORD'S OFFICE – NIGHT
A gentle, purple aesthetic has washed over the Overlord's office – a large, swanky suite, with far more lush furniture than the slums across the city. She broods at the window, staring out at the buildings that go on for miles, then taps an earpiece, speaking with a thick, Eastern European accent.
OVERLORD
Well? How did it go?
CAPTAIN (oc)
…We managed to shut down their operations at the address.
OVERLORD
And the thugs?
CAPTAIN
…Some managed to escape.
OVERLORD
You let them escape?!
9 EXT. SLUMS – NIGHT
The Captain stutters over his words, looking back to the authorities clearing through the building that the Resistance previously owned, and some of them making their way down the street to stop the public from approaching.
CAPTAIN
One- one- one squadron was disabled, ma'am.
OVERLORD (oc)
Not good enough.
He gulps.
10 INT. THE OVERLORD'S OFFICE - NIGHT
She sighs, striding across her office, her high heels clinking against the smooth, wooden floor, echoing against the high walls.
OVERLORD
Captain, why do you do this to me? You know this was the job I assigned you for. As Captain of my personal security, you know the threat these thugs pose on our empire.
CAPTAIN (oc)
Yes, ma'am.
OVERLORD
And you know how you got this position?
CAPTAIN (oc)
…Yes, ma'am.
OVERLORD
Then…
She parodically chokes up, as if mocking him.
OVERLORD
You leave me no choice. Tell me, Captain. Who is your second in command?
She smirks a little, as if revelling in the order she's about to give, toying with her prey.
11 EXT. SLUMS – NIGHT
His breath wavers, beads of sweat dripping from his forehead.
CAPTAIN
Lieutenant… Lieutenant Rurik, ma'am.
He listens to one final message from his superior, before sprinting away from the scene. On the street, another soldier – Rurik, suddenly receives a vibration from his own earpiece.
RURIK
Attending, Lieutenant Rurik.
OVERLORD
Lieutenant, this is your Overlord. How would you like a promotion?
He stands upright, his hands fixed to his sides, as if she were right in front of him.
RURIK
I would be honoured, ma'am.
OVERLORD
Good. Your predecessor, he's a traitor. Arrange his death.
RURIK
Ma'am?
OVERLORD
At once, Captain Rurik.
RURIK
…Yes, ma'am.
Rurik takes out a pistol, aims it at his former supervisor. His hand trembles a little, his finger feeling the trigger, before-
RURIK
Down!
A single bolt is fired into the old captain's back, and immediately he flops to the floor. The crowd who are still being held back by the authorities – and indeed, some of the authorities themselves, are aghast by this. He looks out to them all.
RURIK
This serves as a warning to all those who dare contravene the laws that are for the benefit of society. Anarchists will not stand in our city! We will have order!
He repeats it again, and again, as some join in, before the crowds begin to chant: We will have order! We will have order! over and over again, dismissing the corpse on the floor of the public streets.
12 INT. THE OVERLORD'S OFFICE – NIGHT
She watches the chants from her computer, monitoring them from the security cameras, her crooked mouth forming a wide grin.
OVERLORD
Oh, he'll do nicely.
Her fingers steeple. [Track 2 ends]
13 EXT. ROOFTOP – NIGHT
[Track 3: Raptors at the Shopping Mall] A soldier clambers back over the fire escape, reading a handheld device.
FIL
I'm getting a signal now… yep, that confirms it. He's down.
A mutter of applause and shock.
SARA
That'll put her back a bit.
ZACH
I'm sorry, who? Who's down?
SARA
You didn't tell us who you are.
DOCTOR
Doctor, Zach. Travellers, protecting the timelines.
BELA
She stopped us in 1854, but promised to help us now. Ostaia died because of you. They all did. A whole squadron.
DOCTOR
I'm sorry for your loss. I promise you, this will end.
SARA
I'm Sara, leader of this task force. Marya, how's the report to the other forces?
MARYA
Still working on it!
ZACH
Again, going back to he. Who's he?
GEDEON
Cori Paltrev. Captain of the Protectors. In other words, the authorities. He was the Overlord's personal bodyguard…
BELA
Whenever a major campaign fails, she replaces whoever was in charge. Unlucky for her, Paltrev was a pretty sweet chaser.
SARA
Nearly wiped us out quite a few times. Does it say who his replacement is?
FIL
Not yet.
KUNIS
Security's going to be tightened round this area.
FIL
Not just that… we've got a problem.
He gives an awkward smile.
FIL
So, um… It seems that… our bases surrounding the Capitol have all been taken down. Raided all at the same time.
MARYA
That's why I'm not getting a response. I was worried your device was faulty for a second, Fil.
FIL
I wish it was.
BELA
Wait, that means…
SARA
Someone had insider information. We weren't targeted cos of the temporal signals. They planned this attack. There's a spy.
Everyone glances over to Gedeon.
GEDEON
Hold up, why me?
BELA
You're the face of the Company. The big PR boy. Maybe you're trying to get favour.
GEDEON
If I was, don't you think I would've tried to sabotage our plans back in 1854?
FIL
I mean, you sure tried.
GEDEON
That's thanks to these losers, not me.
DOCTOR
Oi!
ZACH
Yeah, but we don't know your plans. How can it be us?
BELA
That doesn't matter now anyway. We're the last ones left, and we've still got a job to do. I say we continue our main plan, keep moving forward.
RIK
But security's tightening.
MARYA
And we got to think of our other priorities. The out groups.
ZACH
The what?
DOCTOR
Those that aren't worth anything are sorted into out groups – arrested, tortured, killed.
SARA
We managed to carry out a raid, saved a few of them. They're currently in hiding. But if armed forces are moving and they know our strategies…
DOCTOR
They're at risk. We can't have civilians in the line of fire, we need to move them somewhere out of the way. Not in Crimea, not in the view of the Overlord.
GEDEON
There's a safehouse in Syria. It's not on the servers, it's not official – I hid my sister there when we escaped the out groups. I wouldn't mind checking in on her.
ZACH
Syria. Is that far?
GEDEON
Only the other side of the Black Sea and another giant-ass country away.
ZACH
Okay, so far.
BELA
But it's the only place in Eastern Europe the Overlord hasn't managed to take over.
DOCTOR
I have an idea.
GEDEON
What's that?
DOCTOR
Split up.
ZACH
Yeah, like that ever works.
DOCTOR
No, I'm serious. A small group moves inside the Capitol – from what I'm gathering, the Resistance has been making bases all around, trying to surround it and move in at the same time. What if just one force moved in, slowly sabotaging whilst the rest make sure the civilians stay out of harm's way?
The rebels all look at each other, kind of excited by this prospect, but anxious.
SARA
That's… not how we do things.
DOCTOR
It is now. You wanted my help; this is what I'm offering.
GEDEON
We work as a big squad. Strength in numbers.
DOCTOR
We don't have numbers!
BELA
We don't have time to debate this anyway, we're probably attracting attention up here, so we've got to start moving.
SARA
Yeah. As the leader, I'll move to the Capitol. Newbies, you're sticking with me where I can keep my eye on you. You too, Rebela.
Bela ties her shoelaces, rather aggressively.
ZACH
Rebela? That's your full name?
BELA
It's a nickname.
SARA
She contradicts my orders so often, she's a rebel in herself. Rebel, Bela. Rebela.
DOCTOR
Good, we could use a bit of rebellion.
GEDEON
I want to come too.
SARA
Sorry, Gedeon. Still can't trust you.
GEDEON
You said-
SARA
I know what I said. And you failed your mission. We're still here, in the same spot. No time-changing, no mind-changing. Got it?
He speaks through gritted teeth.
GEDEON
Yes, ma'am.
SARA
Ostaia- Damn. Okay, okay, uh… Alyx. Your squad?
Someone steps out from the shadows, a scowl on their face and two knives strapped to their legs. It's hard to distinguish their sex, with a rather feminine body type, but a fairly boyish haircut with a fade down the sides.
ALYX
Kay.
SARA
Enthusiastic as ever.
DOCTOR
Zach, you stay with the others, okay? The smaller our group, the better.
ZACH
No- I want to stay with you.
DOCTOR
Trust me, please. Going into a high-risk situation would not be good for time sickness.
ZACH
I'm fine.
DOCTOR
Please, I'd feel better if you were recovering safely.
ZACH
Hey- Do you not think it's safe? In that case-
DOCTOR
In that case, I need you looking after some very innocent and very scared refugees. We're outside the law on this one.
They share an intimate moment, saying nothing but knowing exactly the other's stance – locked in a game of mental chess, before Zach knocks the queen over, breaking the stare, and nodding.
ZACH
Fine.
DOCTOR
Thanks. Hey, gimme your phone.
ZACH
Why?
DOCTOR
Just gimme it.
ZACH
It's not going to have any signal, is it?
He places it in her hand, as she takes out the screwdriver.
ZACH
I don't like where this is going.
It bleeps, and she throws it back to him, fumbling about to catch it unexpectedly.
DOCTOR
There you are! Universal roaming.
ZACH
What now?
DOCTOR
Now you can call anyone anywhere, anywhen. Just put in the timezone after and you can get it. If you need me, call me. Okay?
ZACH
Okay. Thanks. Seriously, anywhere?
DOCTOR
Yep.
BELA
As I was saying about moving?
DOCTOR
Right, yes, of course.
She glances back at him.
DOCTOR
Stay safe.
ZACH
You too. Don't exactly fancy being stuck in the 28th century.
SARA
Marya, you're in charge of that lot.
GEDEON
Seriously? Marya's in charge?
BELA
Yeah, really?
SARA
You know your mission, don't deviate, don't try and be heroic. Your job is to secure the safety of civilians, that is your task. That's of the utmost importance, got it?
Nods and mumbles of "yes, ma'am", before the group breaks off, Sara's group (and the Doctor) heading back down the fire escape.
ZACH
Alone in the future… Lovely.
He fidgets a little, obviously incredibly fearful. [Track 3 ends]
14 EXT. SLUMS – NIGHT
[Track 4: The Crystal and the TARDIS] The streets are mostly empty – imposed by curfew. Soldiers are marching, an air of intimidation and oppression worn on their faces. They have tight grips on their rifles, quite advanced. They pass one alley, where the Doctor, Sara, Bela, Alyx and five other rebels are hiding behind bins. On one of the walls, is a digital poster, of Gedeon, beckoning their demographic, with a caption that says: "SIGN UP! DO YOUR DUTY TO THE COMPANY!"
DOCTOR
We can't stay on the streets; we need to have somewhere to hide in.
BELA
There are no hiding places, our safehouses are compromised.
DOCTOR
Then we need to go off-grid, like the others.
ALYX
…I might know somewhere.
They all look at Alyx, as he shuts up, retreating back into his uncommunicative shell. Suddenly, a loud bang echoes, and they all glance down the street as the soldiers burst into a house and begin to drag the residents out. A van pulls up, all black and shrouded in the shadows of the night.
PIOTR
What're you doing to me?! Get off! Get off, I said!
A man in a smooth, leather trenchcoat swaggers towards him, obviously enjoying this moment, as he thrusts a piece of paper into Piotr's chest.
BELA
Hunters.
RYEN
You've been charged with illegal trading. As a result of not authorising your goods- which, ooh, look at this!
A soldier comes out of the building with a bag, dumping it onto the floor – bread rolls and other scraps of food.
RYEN
Contraband. Your stock hasn't been verified.
PIOTR
Because I made it! The Overlord doesn't deserve 10% of MY OWN WORK!
Ryen smacks Piotr with the back of his hand and he falls to the floor, whimpering.
RYEN
As I was saying, as a result of your transgression, your affluence shall be cancelled and you have been assigned to Out Group D.
PIOTR
No! NO!
His wife calls out, but suddenly Piotr yells at her to stay inside. The Doctor goes to intervene, but Sara pulls her back behind the bins.
DOCTOR
We've got to help him!
SARA
No. There's nothing we can do for him right now. The best chance he's got is for us to take down the Overlord and stop all of this as soon as we can.
PIOTR
I'm innocent!
RYEN
We've been monitoring you for weeks, Mr Kuchev. I'm afraid you're really rather not.
PIOTR
Your rules are corrupt! This is MY WORK! My freedom! Any scrap of free will is snuffed out because our "benevolent" Overlord is scared! How can you live with yourself?!
RYEN
Please, we don't want to awake our fellow neighbours, do we? We can do this the easy way or the hard way.
Piotr tries to flee, but Ryen grabs him, throwing him towards the soldiers, who bundle him into the van – where three other criminals are begging to escape - and drive off, leaving his wife and child stunned at the loss of their husband and father. Once again, the street returns to oppressive silence. Sara gestures for Alyx to lead the way down the street, hiding in the darkness, but the Doctor just stares, mortified and speechless. Bela grabs her.
BELA
Come on, Doctor. We need to move.
DOCTOR
Yeah… yeah, okay.
She follows Bela and the rest of the group down the road.
CUT TO:
The van speeds down the street, passing the rest of the Resistance, Zach included.
ZACH
That's swish, look at that!
GEDEON
Would you keep it down? They're "recall vans". They steal people in the night and send them to the outgroups.
MARYA
How far's the warehouse?
GEDEON
By Putin's fields.
ZACH
You named a field after Putin?
GEDEON
Overlord, not us. You see those trees behind the house?
Zach sees some wintry branches and a long, grey trunk peeking over behind a small townhouse.
GEDEON
We have to head through those woods into the fields.
FIL
Careful though. Wild dogs run rampant through here.
ZACH
I don't suppose there's a different way we could go with something nicer? Hot tub? Limousine? Not even a pack of jaffa cakes? God, I miss jaffa cakes.
GEDEON
Shut up.
They sprint across the street, down towards a small passage on the side of the townhouse, vaulting over a garden fence and into the dark and murky woods. [Track 4 ends]
15 EXT. ORPHANAGE GROUNDS – DAWN
The Doctor's group head towards the burned vestiges of a large building – windows have been smashed in, the stonework is rotting away and covered in charcoal and the framework has collapsed.
DOCTOR
Where are we?
ALYX
My orphanage. What's left of it, anyway.
DOCTOR
What happened to it?
ALYX
The Overlord uses the dispossessed and raises them to join the military forces. So, naturally, I burned it down.
DOCTOR
When you were a kid?
They shrug.
BELA
I'm a little scared of you sometimes, Alyx, you know that?
ALYX
Thank you.
SARA
This should make a good place to camp out until the morning.
Alyx heads towards the building.
16 INT. ORPHANAGE – DAWN
They kick through a boarded-up door and enter the main hall, now littered with broken stone and wooden planks, exposed wires dripping from the ceiling – overall, just a general fire hazard. The Doctor glances around, almost admiring the mess.
DOCTOR
Nice gaff.
ALYX
This is at it's best. Dead, inoperative.
DOCTOR
Bundle of laughs, you are.
SARA
Watch your step, everyone. There's bound to be all sorts of dangers in here. I'm going to the roof, to draw up a new route to the Capitol.
Alyx wanders off, and the Doctor frowns.
17 INT. WAREHOUSE – DAWN
[Track 5: The Shadow Kin] The disappearing moonlight streams through small cracks in a long hall, stuffed to the brim with random junk – barbed wire, broken chairs and old tiles. Someone hides in a corner, breathing faintly, glancing over to someone else – and another – and we realise that people are dotted sparsely across the hall. The doors swing open, and they all cower, before they hear the familiar whistle, the call to safety, and they all start to emerge from their hiding places to see Marya and the rebels all waiting for them.
IRINA
You returned.
MARYA
Yes, but we don't have long. The soldiers, we think they're coming for you.
ZACH
No, we know they're coming. Look!
Zach stares out of a window, to see soldiers moving across the field.
ZACH
The way we came is gone.
IRINA
Back exit!
They dart through the warehouse, dodging and swerving around the trash that has decorated the building. They see the door, but realise that more soldiers are approaching from that way too – the building's surrounded. They all start to frantically back away, but Gedeon unholsters his pistol from his belt.
ZACH
Woah, woah, woah, what are you doing?
GEDEON
We've got weapons too!
ZACH
You can't fight them!
GEDEON
We've got six squadrons left, we're soldiers, this is our job!
MARYA
Don't be stupid, they outnumber us!
A laser bolt zips through the window, and they all drop to the floor, now not in the external view.
ZACH
They know we're here.
GEDEON
No, they know the civilians are here.
FIL
They're getting closer…
IRINA
Oh, god… This is it!
Zach's eyes dart from side to side, the cogs inside his brain working furiously, thoughts racing past.
ZACH
Not if I have anything to say about it. We've got the advantage here. This is our territory, and they don't know we've got weapons. We hide and pick them off one by one!
GEDEON
That's a-
ZACH
Don't you dare finish that sentence with anything negative or resembles the word coward, Gedeon. Get to your hiding places, quickly!
MARYA
Do as he says!
Everyone scatters once again, spreading out across the warehouse into strategically strong points, ready to ambush the soldiers.
CUT TO:
Gedeon climbs up and shrinks behind a broken stone statue.
CUT TO:
Marya makes her way inside a wardrobe, shutting the doors so only a thin line of light is reflected on her face.
CUT TO:
Zach dives under a sofa, being held up a little by a few books to give him space to crawl underneath and hide. A door suddenly slams, and he hears a uniformed marching rapidly storming around him. His breath trembles more with each passing second.
CUT TO:
A soldier walks past a rack of clothes, his torch being pointed in all directions, a menacing pout on his face. Suddenly, Fil jumps out from through the clothes, picking up a gas canister from the floor and spraying it, directed towards the soldier. He suffocates, smacking his head against a metal sheet as he hits the floor.
CUT TO:
Zach sees a pair of thick, metal boots march past. For a few seconds, again, he stops moving, holding his breath, before he plucks up the courage to shoot his hand out, grab his ankles and yank them so he trips and falls to the floor. He picks up a rod and bonks him over the head, so he is knocked out, finally sliding him under the sofa where he just was and searching for another spot.
CUT TO:
Marya hears radio chatter close by from inside the wardrobe.
CUT TO:
Irina jumps down from a stack of chairs, pinning a soldier to the floor and gagging his mouth.
CUT TO:
Another civilian smashes a cracked bathroom sink over a soldier's head – naturally, cracking it even more, but also making quite a bit of noise, attracting the attention of another soldier, who fires a bolt into him. He yelps, before falling back on top of her victim.
SOLDIER
We've got a man down, I repeat man down!
Gedeon jumps out and whacks the soldier over the head.
GEDEON (whispers)
Shut up!
The soldier's radio crackles.
SOLDIER 2 (oc)
Copy that, who is the injured and where? Trooper 246? 246, come in. We're closing in on your radio signal now.
GEDEON
No, no, no!
The soldier runs towards him, his gun aloft and aimed at Gedeon.
SOLDIER 2
Don't move! Drop the weapon!
Gedeon reaches for his gun, but sees the soldier's finger ready to pull the trigger.
CUT TO:
Zach hears the yelling, his heart weighted with dread, bounding towards them.
CUT TO:
The soldier continues to point the gun at Gedeon, as he drops his own weapon to the floor.
SOLDIER 2
Do I know you?
GEDEON
I'm on the recruitment posters. I'm part of the Overlord's campaign. Or I was, until she tried to dispose of me… She'll do the same to you, too!
SOLDIER 2
That's a lie.
GEDEON
It's not, it's not…
SOLDIER 2
Hands up!
GEDEON
No, please!
[Track 5 ends] He throws his hands up, and as the soldier closes in on Gedeon, the wardrobe doors fly open and smack him in the face. Zach slows down, as he sees the unconscious soldiers on the floor, and Marya's gleeful expression.
MARYA
Aha! I did it! I took someone out!
For the first time, Zach discerns a touch of respect forming on Gedeon's face, his eyes warming, that scowl fading a little.
GEDEON
Thanks.
He picks up his gun and places it back in his holster.
MARYA
You're welcome.
ZACH
I think… that's all of them. Easier than expected.
GEDEON
No, it's not. Look.
They look through a small gap in a stack of boxes towards a window – there are still soldiers surrounding the building.
GEDEON
They sent in a squad to take us out, whilst ensuring we can't escape.
ZACH
Spoke too soon. Why can it never be easy?
Zach groans, before rushing back into the maze of rubbish.
CUT TO:
Everyone – rebel and civilian, closes in on Zach, Marya and Gedeon in the centre of the warehouse.
MARYA
We're safe for now, but we're still surrounded. I don't know if there's a way out.
The civilians all shudder, a few begin to start crying. Zach looks at them, sympathetically, then grinning.
ZACH
But we're not giving up! Are we, any of us?
They listen to Zach's inspiring words.
ZACH
We're going to get out of here, we're going to keep you all safe, because that's what we promised you, okay? I mean, there's gotta be something here we can use, in all this junk, right?
FIL
How 'bout this?
Fil chucks Zach the canister.
ZACH
Aerosol. Of all the things to pick up, you chose deodorant.
Fil cringes a little, but Zach suddenly realises. [Track 6: Sonic Screwdriver]
ZACH
Wait.
He flips the canister around and reads the information on the back.
ZACH
Propane… pressurised container… Yes! Extremely flammable aerosol! Fil, if I weren't married, I'd kiss you right now! You lot, get all the flammable stuff you can find! Marya, Gedeon, Fil, find more of these deodorants!
FIL
Over here!
They run off, all picking up bits and pieces, carrying them and dumping them all in one spot.
18 EXT. PUTIN'S FIELDS – DAWN
The soldiers line up, forming a circle, trapping the warehouse. One of them, Ryen, speaks into his radio.
RYEN
What's going on in there? Have you neutralised the threat? Come in!
He growls.
RYEN
I hate this waiting. COME IN!
His bark echoes into the sunrising air.
19 INT. WAREHOUSE – DAWN
The pile is growing exponentially as they all find more and more to throw on. Gedeon chucks the radio to Zach.
GEDEON
Someone's trying to talk to us.
ZACH
You've got more of an accent.
He passes it back, and Gedeon widens his eyes.
GEDEON
You're the one with the plan, what am I supposed to do?
Zach thinks, then his face lights up, staring at the tower of wood, paper and other flammable items.
ZACH
Tell them the truth!
He picks up a matchbox.
20 EXT. PUTIN'S FIELDS – DAWN
The radio hisses.
RYEN
I said come in!
GEDEON (oc)
Get out of here! It's going to blow!
They all look at each other, shocked.
21 INT. WAREHOUSE – DAWN
Zach sparks a light, then yells for them all to run, which they do. Zach does the same, chucking the match over his shoulder, landing on a wooden plank and catching alight.
22 EXT. PUTIN'S FIELDS – DAWN
The soldiers all see smoke rising out of the windows and an orange glow emanating from inside.
RYEN
Retreat! Get away!
They all fall back, rushing away from the warehouse.
23 INT. WAREHOUSE - DAWN
They all sprint away from the smouldering flames, rising higher and higher. Zach launches himself into the air, as the place erupts into a huge explosion- [Track 6 ends]
FADE TO WHITE:
24 INT. ALYX'S ROOM – MORNING
[Track 7: Home Sweet Home] Alyx is stood in a bare room – no windows, an empty light socket, covered in sawdust and a large hole in the ceiling. They are kicking through the walls, hammering the floor, ripping out the wires, as the Doctor just stares and watches, leant against the door frame and her hands in her pockets.
DOCTOR
Anger issues?
Alyx spins around.
ALYX
How long have you been stood there?
DOCTOR
A while. Traumatic experience here?
They scoff.
ALYX
Could say that. They stole my childhood from me. They stole millions of childhoods. There are hundreds of places just like this raising an army – little girls and boys across Europe being indoctrinated, forced into believing that they're better, superior. Some people, the people who aren't under the Overlord's influence, they wonder how it can be that the rest of the world is so blind. How can the army be so brutal? It's because brutality is all they know. Learning to fight, to kill, normalising it, over and over!
A hidden, overt rage bursts out of their quieter, more silent self as they unsheathe one of their knives, throwing it at the wall – it makes a mark as it pierces the plaster and sticks into it with relative ease.
DOCTOR
I'm sorry.
They sigh, yanking the knife out of the wall and thrusting it back into their trouser leg.
ALYX
Don't be. I'm lucky. I knew I was different, even when I was young. I was able to see through the flaws in our society and break free. But many kids didn't have that, and they're roaming the streets now, terrorising their own people.
They face the floor, then look up at the Doctor.
DOCTOR
Sara wants us downstairs. Whenever you're ready.
ALYX
Thank you.
She smiles, then heads out, leaving Alyx alone with their thoughts. [Track 7 ends]
25 EXT. CAPITOL GATES – MORNING
[Track 8: Routine Checks] The Doctor, Sara, Bela and Alyx's squad all roll up to the entrance, stuck in a queue – the Doctor has lost her winter variation of her costume, and now, along with the rest of her team, are waiting smart suits. A huge stone wall towers over them, separating the two districts, and armed guards stand at the gap in between, allowing some people through and throwing others up against the wall for a pat-down, or even arrests.
BELA
Never been this close to the Capitol before.
SARA
Don't lose your head now, Rebela.
The Doctor takes out the psychic paper, fiddling with it discreetly.
DOCTOR
Follow my lead.
They arrive at the front of the queue, where the guard eyes them up and down. She throws up the psychic paper, and the guard takes it. He scans through it cautiously, before handing it back to her. She grins, and they pass through.
DOCTOR
Easy.
The gates open and they swagger through.
BELA (whispering)
What is that?
DOCTOR (whispering)
Psychic paper.
BELA (whispering)
Where'd you get that from? I'd love to get myself one of those.
DOCTOR (whispering)
Don't even think about it.
Bela chuckles nervously.
26 EXT. CAPITOL STREETS - MORNING
They stroll down the street.
SARA
Well, we're in. What now? Riot?
DOCTOR
You don't have a plan?
SARA
Yes, the plan was to get inside, then… I think of something else to tear down the Government. Be fair, I've never done this before!
BELA
Shh!
They look around, as they see other members of the public glaring at them, a little suspiciously.
DOCTOR (whispering)
Luckily, I have.
BELA
Which one?
DOCTOR
Doesn't matter now. All we need to do is get inside there.
They look up to the grand tower, rising high above the grey clouds of the Capitol. [Track 8 ends]
27 EXT. MYS SARYCH – DAY
Marya leads the charge onto the shore, similar to a dry dune – frost has still settled, but it's lighter, cleaner from the sea air, and the grass is a little warmer, in contrast with the sand, with around 30 people in tow behind her. Zach catches up to her.
ZACH
Hey, Marya. Not at all doubting your leadership skills-
MARYA
Glad to hear it.
ZACH
Um, but… the only question I have is… uh- We're going to Syria, right?
MARYA
That's correct!
ZACH
And, we're at a beach.
MARYA
We need to cross the Black Sea.
ZACH
Heh, got that. How?
FIL
One of my contacts.
[Track 9: The Division] Zach jumps as he realises Fil has been listening in to their conversation the entire time.
ZACH
Agh- Oh. Okay, what?
FIL
They're ready to receive us on the other side.
ZACH
How are we getting there?!
FIL
With this!
He whips out a little disc, throwing it onto the floor. It unfolds into a flat metal dais.
ZACH
Okay… and that is?
FIL
Transis.
ZACH
Okay… and that is?
FIL
Oh, come on! Everyone's heard of Transis!
ZACH
Not me, so what is it?
He beams, like an excitable puppy.
FIL
Hyper-speed transport system. It's how we developed our time travel technology. You step on the plate, a bubble is formed around you, and you end up on the mirror plate. Annoyingly, there was only one plate for our time travel experiment, so we had to set co-ordinates. That's why it didn't work as well.
ZACH
Why couldn't we just do it back in Sevastopol?
FIL
There's a limited range – 175 miles. By my calculations, we're just under a mile, so we should be good to go.
ZACH
Right...
Zach suddenly frowns, seeing a silhouette on a hill on another part of the shore.
ZACH
Hang on...
MARYA
What?
Zach glances at Marya, then back to the hill - the silhouette is gone.
ZACH
I thought I saw... I thought someone was staring. Nevermind.
MARYA
Are you sure?
ZACH
Yeah.
FIL
I'll go first, make sure everything's okay.
He smirks.
FIL
See you on the other side!
He steps on the plate, and he's engulfed in a bright bubble, before wisping away.
MARYA
Don't let us down, Fil…
Marya does the same, then Gedeon, then Zach. [Track 9 ends] He judders, as the environment around him convulses- WHOOSH!
28 INT. RUINS – DAY
[Track 10: Long Story] Zach tumbles onto the floor as the bubble disperses, his head wobbling. He suddenly shoots up as he hears Marya scream, and the soldiers grab the group, save Fil.
GEDEON
Ambush!
Gedeon pushes away the soldier and stamps on the plate on the floor, before being pulled away again. Zach is grabbed by the shoulder and he yells. Ryen claps as the group struggles from their captors. Fil stares at the floor.
RYEN
Well done! Fantastic play! We got you in the end, though.
GEDEON
Fil… No… It was you? You were the spy! How could you?!
Gedeon tries to lunge at him, forgetting that a soldier is holding him back. Ryen tuts.
RYEN
You're just a bit of an idiot, aren't you?
MARYA
We trusted you!
GEDEON
I broke the plate. The civilians can't get through. They're safe.
FIL
For now. They're at Mys Sarych.
ZACH
No! You leave them alone!
Zach is thrown to the floor, and Ryen crouches down.
RYEN
Hel-lo. I don't know you. How exciting! I love a newbie. So much easier to break.
Zach spits at Ryen. He wipes it off, obviously infuriated but playing it off coolly.
RYEN
They've got spirit. I'm going to enjoy ripping that to shreds.
He whispers in Zach's ear.
RYEN
I'll personally make sure I'm your torturer. And I'll make it last… for that.
He stands up, walking away as Zach quivers, defeated.
RYEN
Captain Rurik, please… Yeah, it's Ryen Shevsky. Code 231220.
He glances over at the rebels.
RYEN
We've got a few of his missing dissenters.
A tear rolls down Zach's eye. [Track 10 ends]
29 INT. THE OVERLORD'S OFFICE – DAY
[Track 11: She Was The Universe] The Overlord is sipping a cup of tea, sitting comfortably. Suddenly, she leans forward as the lights fluctuate. Frowning, she presses her intercom.
OVERLORD
What's going on down there?
The intercom crackles, and a faint voice comes through the white noise.
DOCTOR (oc)
Hiya. Mind if we come in?
OVERLORD
What?!
The lift doors open, and the Overlord audibly gasps as the Doctor, with the rebels, storm in, pretending she's in slow-motion, acting all cool.
OVERLORD
Who are you?! How did you get past my security?
DOCTOR
We've got some very advanced technology. Time bombs, sonic screwdriver, psychic paper, and my favourite of all – mini muffins! Always works. Especially considering your subjects are starving. And, in answer to your other question… We're the Resistance. Actually, she's in charge, but I just like giving big speeches. Sorry, Sara, you take the floor.
OVERLORD
What?! How?!
SARA
You're all about efficiency, you forgot about the human approach. Human tricks, little subtle things that can cause distractions. You mechanised your empire, you forgot who actually ran it. People.
DOCTOR
Nice to meet you at last, Overlord. Is that seriously your name? Did your parents think "oh, you know what would be a cool name for our daughter? Overlord!"
Bela points a soldier's blaster – presumably stolen from downstairs – at the Overlord.
BELA
You'll pay… for everything you've done to me.
DOCTOR
Oh, come on Bela. At least try to be nice.
BELA
This monster isn't.
DOCTOR
That monster isn't the one pointing the gun. Put it down.
Bela hesitates, then lowers her arm.
DOCTOR
Good girl.
OVERLORD
Now you "saved my life", is that supposed to make me not kill you all?
DOCTOR
What is it with you lot being all trigger-happy? For all you know, we could be giving you some mini-muffins! I mean, we're not, but we could've been!
The Overlord slams her hand down on a panic button.
DOCTOR
Not going to work, I'm afraid.
She holds up the sonic.
DOCTOR
Signal override – this room's soundproof, sight proof and every other kind of proof!
OVERLORD
So what are you going to do? If you won't kill me? Appeal to my better nature?
She sniggers.
DOCTOR
Yes.
OVERLORD
And what's your name?
DOCTOR
The Doctor.
OVERLORD
Did your parents give you a weird name too?
SARA
Enough of this. Your campaign is over. We're in the heart of your Empire, and now we're going to liberate it.
OVERLORD
But would you willingly do that, knowing the financial disruption it'll bring? Europe will be bankrupt, split open like a walnut.
SARA
It's better than you pressing down on them like a nutcracker.
OVERLORD
I'm not going to give up my power. I have an army. I've got a third of the world on my side. And you… are terrorists. A terrorist organisation that's been ultimately annihilated. By me. So what do you have?
SARA
Nothing to lose.
Sara's eyes squint.
30 INT. PRISON CELL – DAY
Zach, Marya and Gedeon are silent, sitting rigidly in a small, cramped prison cell – other prisoners are crying out.
MARYA
He's always developed our technology. Has done for years. How much of it has been bugged, how much of it was in service of the Company? How much of Fil's device told us the truth?
GEDEON
At least we know why his sources were always so reliable. I bet we're not even the last Resistance group.
Zach takes out his phone, and texts into it "they got us, sry" before nearly wiping a tear away and clicking send.
ZACH
The Doctor knows what happened.
GEDEON
The out group… we failed to save them.
ZACH
You bought them time. Your colleagues are still with them, like you said, there are six military squads there.
GEDEON
They'll be overrun.
ZACH
But they might find a plan. They'll work out something went wrong soon, they might even make it out of Crimea.
GEDEON
Unlikely, though.
It goes silent.
ZACH
…I need to make a call.
He begins to dial, pressing the phone to his ear.
SHONA (oc)
Hello?
ZACH
Hey, hun. It's… it's me.
SHONA (oc)
Zach! You're still alive! That's a relief.
ZACH
Yeah… Yeah, I am.
SHONA (oc)
So, what's been going on? Where are you? Distant planet? All beautiful skies and grand landscapes, all that?
Zach looks out a tinted window to the monotonous, polluted sky.
ZACH
Yeah.
He chokes up a little.
SHONA (oc)
Is everything okay?
ZACH
Top of the world, couldn't be better. How's Deisha?
SHONA (oc)
You know, her usual self. Really turning into a teenager now.
ZACH
She never changes.
He chuckles a little.
ZACH
You're okay on your own, though? You can handle her alright?
SHONA (oc)
Course I can, idiot.
ZACH
Good.
SHONA (oc)
Come on, what's up?
ZACH
I, uh… Just missing you, that's all.
SHONA (oc)
Is the Doctor with you?
ZACH
Uh… no. No she's not.
SHONA (oc)
Well, where is she? Are you safe?
ZACH
…She's saving the world. I'm glad you're okay. I- I- I... gotta go now. Love you.
SHONA (oc)
Zach-?
He hangs up, bursting into tears. Marya strokes his back, consoling him and holding him close. [Track 11 ends]
31 INT. THE OVERLORD'S OFFICE – DAY
[Track 12: Dalek Interruption] The Doctor shows Sara the text, and her face falls.
SARA
They didn't make it…
The Overlord slumps in her chair, breathing deeply. Bela, again, points her gun at her.
OVERLORD
Put that silly toy away.
BELA
How can you still be so arrogant with a gun to your head?
OVERLORD
Because we both know you're not going to use it. You really don't have the upper hand here. Look at you all. Posing a threat to my empire, but when you finally get the chance to make a change, you don't have the balls. You're all talk! You've lost by a lot, and it's all your fault!
Alyx throws themselves at the Overlord, grabbing her and pinning her against the large window, overlooking her city below.
ALYX
You wanna see how much talk I am? I've been fighting your regime since I was 8. I didn't conform to your society ever. Not your genders, not your expectations, not your armies. I burned down one of your enrolment centres, I joined the Resistance as a teenager and now, now- I could very easily throw you out of this window, all the way down to the common peasants. The Doctor doesn't make the rules for me. I go by my own rules, you really wanna try me, sweetheart?
OVERLORD
…Yes.
There is an intimate moment between Alyx and the Overlord – no words spoken, before he drops her. Again, she giggles, thinking they've let her go, but suddenly they smash the window and pick the Overlord up again, dangling her out. She screams.
ALYX
Bad answer!
OVERLORD
You don't want to do this!
ALYX
No, I do! I know what it's like to be different in an oppressive society. And no child is ever going to feel like that again!
Alyx throws the Overlord back into the office – the wind has picked up a lot more, messing with their hair and clothes, now the window has broken.
ALYX
I ask you again. Do you really want to try me?!
He snarls, and the Overlord stares at him in sheer terror. [Track 12 ends]
32 INT. PRISON CELL – DAY
[Track 13: At First It's A Game] Marya thinks.
MARYA
What do you think they're going to do? Out group us?
GEDEON
Nah. The Overlord's going to take enjoyment in this. According to her, we're terrorists and thugs. It'll seriously drum up support if she makes a spectacle out of our deaths. So this is how it all ends. I could've stopped this. A dignified death, saving the world. Instead, I'm going to die being laughed at, being branded a criminal. Worst part is, I'll never know what happened to my sister…
ZACH
Don't you have any contacts on the outside?
GEDEON
Not any living ones.
Fil walks past, and Gedeon notices him.
GEDEON
Fil! You traitor! Come here.
He dawdles towards the iron bars.
GEDEON
Why do this?
FIL
I had no choice.
GEDEON
There's always a choice!
His eyes redden.
FIL
Didn't you ever think to ask me where I came from? Why I joined the Resistance? I was in an enrolment centre. I spent my entire childhood there, they moulded me. One of the Science Groups, just like you, Marya. Then you lot come along, not realising my background, just taking advantage of me and my technological know-how. And I thought… I can use this. I can work inside the Resistance to bring them down. You didn't look at me for who I really am. You used me.
GEDEON
But so is the Overlord! Think about what she did to me! I didn't amount to anything, she plucked me out of a random crowd and forced me on her posters. There was no value to me, I was nothing! And then, when I was all done, she tried to discard me. And she'll do the same to you too.
FIL
She won't.
GEDEON
Oh, really? Think about all the out groups. Think about that brilliant hunter, murdered last night. What makes you better than any of them?
FIL
I…
GEDEON
You're not. She'll throw you away just as easily as she does everyone else. You're nothing to her, just a pawn.
FIL
I'm not. Don't say that.
GEDEON
I'm sorry. It's true. You know it's true. We were mates. I didn't care about your past, but I cared about who you were with me. And I know you can break free of her oppression. You can help us. Please.
Fil sobs. [Track 13 ends] The door swings open, Fil's eyes filling with shame.
GEDEON
Thank you.
ZACH
Alright, what now? We gotta help the Doctor.
MARYA
What you just said, about your posters…
GEDEON
Yeah?
MARYA
Gave me an idea. Follow me.
Marya runs off, then spins back.
MARYA
I dunno the way out of here. Fil, could you-?
FIL
Oh, right, yeah, sorry. Yeah.
MARYA
Follow Fil!
He escorts the group away from the cell.
33 INT. CORRIDOR – DAY
[Track 14: They Came Back] Soldiers are trying to pry the lift doors open.
SOLDIER
Ma'am! Ma'am, are you okay?!
34 INT. THE OVERLORD'S OFFICE – DAY
The sonic beeps, and the Doctor looks at the readings.
DOCTOR
They're trying to get in downstairs.
OVERLORD
You're running out of time! You're not going to get out of here alive!
ALYX
Part of the job description. Now free those people! Reveal to the world that your company is disbanding! Liberate Europe!
OVERLORD
No!
Alyx storms towards her and she crawls backwards.
OVERLORD
No! Get him away!
ALYX
It's them!
Alyx pushes her along the floor.
DOCTOR
Alyx, that's enough!
ALYX
No! Not after the years of torture! Her reign of terror is over, and I'm going to make sure she pays for every second of it!
DOCTOR
Stop it!
The lights suddenly flash, and the room rumbles.
BELA
Woah, woah, wait… What's that?
DOCTOR
I don't know.
Buildings across the horizon start to explode, falling apart and collapsing – hundreds of them. The Doctor races towards the broken window to see the sight – all of them do.
OVERLORD
Is this your doing?!
DOCTOR
I don't think so - is it?
The explosions get closer and closer, before they start within the Capitol.
OVERLORD
What have you done?!
The Overlord tries to push the Doctor out of the window, but she ducks and slides around her.
DOCTOR
That was… very cheeky.
OVERLORD
Answer my question!
DOCTOR
I don't know what's going on!
SARA
None of us do!
BELA
I do! Look!
They all stare at the monitor – Gedeon is appearing on it; beckoning, like the recruitment posters, but now the caption has changed: "IT'S TIME TO LIBERATE OURSELVES! IT'S TIME TO SAVE THE FUTURE! JOIN THE RESISTANCE!" The Doctor laughs.
DOCTOR
I think that remainder of the Resistance isn't so small after all!
SARA
They're still alive!
DOCTOR
Good thinking on their part – subtle hypnotic suggestion in the digital code, manipulating people into signing up, into being submissive, to not question your tyranny. Well, now it's being used against you!
Distress forms on the Overlord's face.
35 EXT. THE CAPITOL - DAY
Mobs break out across the city, the authorities being fought by innocent bystanders and members of the public. The soldiers are getting overwhelmed, due to the sheer masses' congregating together into one huge force, as they all start to flock towards the Overlord's Tower.
36 INT. THE OVERLORD'S OFFICE
The room shakes again.
DOCTOR
Looks like your number is up. We gave you a chance to end this peacefully, but it seems like you've got roughly 300 million people, all ready to take you down. All the people you oppressed!
OVERLORD
Guards! Guards, get in here! Execute these people!
SOLDIER (oc)
We're coming, ma'am, just give us a sec!
DOCTOR
Killing us won't do anything.
OVERLORD
It'll rid me of your nuisance!
The building suddenly starts to rock.
SARA
This tower's not safe anymore, we've got thousands of people itching to tear it apart, stone by stone.
ALYX
It'll come crashing down any second!
DOCTOR
Then we need to get out of here! Bela, you still got any time bombs?
BELA
Just the one.
DOCTOR
Brilliant, good girl! Chuck it here!
OVERLORD
I don't think so!
The Overlord charges at the Doctor, throwing her to the floor. As the room unsteadily falls apart, the two battle, the Doctor mainly defending herself by blocking the tyrant's ravages. Alyx kicks her away and restrains her in a police hold.
BELA
Doctor, catch!
Bela throws the time bomb, and the Doctor catches it. She crouches down, rewiring it.
DOCTOR
This doesn't get any easier! Thankfully, I'm not pausing the detonation this time…
She takes out the sonic, and connects the two devices. The building begins to topple, and they slide down. They all grab onto something – whether it's a window frame or the tiling on the floor. The Doctor's grip weakens as she reaches out for the Overlord, dangling over the edge.
DOCTOR
Take my hand! Please!
OVERLORD
No! Get away from me- Aaaagh!
She slips and lets go of the bar, falling thousand of feet from the skyscraper down to the ground below. The Doctor uses the sonic and the time bomb detonates, warping around and around until a familiar sound can be heard… the whispering of engines, forming into a loud vworp, as the building continues to zoom towards the ground.
CUT TO BLACK:
37 EXT. CAPITOL STREETS – DAY
Zach, Marya, Gedeon and Fil walk around the streets, helping people up and admiring the mess that's been made – broken buildings, destroyed streets – and the Overlord's Tower that's made a giant crater in the middle of the Capitol. [Track 14 ends]
ZACH
Doctor… Where are you?
He gulps, dreading the worst. [Track 15: The Future Is Mine 3:04 – 5:01] But suddenly, his heart warms as he hears the materialisation of the TARDIS, spinning around and seeing the blue box fade in from nothing.
MARYA
Now that's an entrance!
ZACH
That's the Doctor!
The TARDIS doors open, and the Doctor pokes her head out.
DOCTOR
You didn't get too far, did you? So much for Syria!
Zach runs towards the Doctor, resulting in a huge hug.
ZACH
We need to stop splitting up like this!
DOCTOR
I'm so glad you're okay…
Sara, Bela and Alyx's squadron all rush out of the TARDIS, dumbfounded and scared.
SARA
How… how is that? How is it bigger inside?
ALYX
Not possible… Impossible!
DOCTOR
Very complicated, I won't bore you with the details. Right, you lot! This place is in a state, and there's an entire Empire that's in ruins. There's going to be a massive lack of communication, there's leaders of different countries who won't have a clue what's going on. You've beaten the head honcho, but the fight's not over. Now's your chance to make change.
SARA
You're right. The Resistance can now expose the truth, we can show what's really been going on and take over.
DOCTOR
Don't go too far, though. Your aim here is liberation, not replacement. Don't replace one tyranny with another.
SARA
You got it.
MARYA
I can't believe it… We're finally free… It's been years, I can't remember how long.
DOCTOR
Enjoy it for now. Celebrate, but then make sure you spread that warm fuzzy feeling you've all got inside – yeah, I can see it in your faces-
They all blush.
DOCTOR
Spread it across the world. Be the change you want to see in the world.
ZACH
Didn't Gandhi say that?
DOCTOR
No, I did!
SARA
The Doctor's right. We've got work to do, just cos we're free, doesn't mean the fight's over! We'll save the world in your name, and in all of our fallen companions.
Gedeon strolls off.
SARA
Oi, where you off to?
GEDEON
Where'd you think? I'm a free man! I wasn't involved in your employment centres or whatever, I was just picked off the street! I'm going to find my sister!
SARA
We've got a job to do!
GEDEON
A job you never trusted me for! I'm going to find people who do. Thanks for everything, Sara.
Gedeon sprints off.
GEDEON
Oh, Bela?
BELA
Yeah?
GEDEON
Your mum was the one who came up with the plan to start the revolution. She might have made some mistakes in the past, but…
Gedeon glances over to Fil.
GEDEON
People can change. It's about who they are now that's important.
BELA
I'll take that into account. See ya, Gedeon.
GEDEON
Bye, Rebela.
The Doctor and Zach grin as the people rejoice, breathing the air of freedom - for some people, for the very first time.
ZACH
Saved the world again, then?
DOCTOR
Oh, yeah!
ZACH
Just tore down a dictatorship today – what else is new?
They smile warmly to each other, now, and head inside the TARDIS, bidding one final wave at their new friends. The doors to the blue box shut and it begins to wisp away. [Track 15 ends]
