ROLL TITLES

1 INT. COURTROOM - DAY
[Track 1: Sacred Lies] Close up of a gavel bashing on a desk.

JUDGE
Order!

We cut out to see a packed courtroom, in what looks to be early 20th century Earth. In the stocks, we see a young woman, her clothes ragged, clearly of low wealth, with tears streaming down her face.

JUDGE
I am aware of the sensitive nature of this case, and the severe effect it has had on our community, but without order in this court, I cannot pass sentence.

JURY
God has already passed her sentence. She'll burn in hell for killing my husband!

DAPHNE
I didn't kill him, I didn't kill anybody, none of you understand!

JURY
Oh, we understand alright, spawn of Satan!

DAPHNE
None of this makes any sense, please just stop!

The Judge bangs the gavel again.

JUDGE
Order! Ms. Hayman, if you cannot conduct yourself in the proper manner, I shall rule without you.

DAPHNE
Why is this happening? I don't understand what's going on! What has been done to me? None of this makes any sense!

JUDGE
If you've quite finished. Ms. Daphne Hayman, it is the ruling of the Superior Court of Salem, Massachusetts, that based on the overwhelming evidence against you and the testimony of the jury, you hereby are found guilty of the crime of witchcraft. You are thus sentenced to be burned at the stake until dead. May God have mercy on your soul, witch. Court will stand adjourned.

He bangs the gavel again, and the woman's face drops.

DAPHNE
NO! Please!

JURY
Burn the witch! Burn the witch!

A man steps in behind Daphne, grabs her arms, and clamps them in irons before dragging her away. She struggles against them, screaming. The man clamps onto her arms tighter, trying to reign her in. As she does, we see her eyes close up, mid-scream. The irises suddenly flare up with ethereal bright orange light. We cut back to the man behind her, who has let go of her and is now furiously patting himself down. He is on fire. The people across the court scream and rush to help as his body is enveloped in flames. In the chaos, Daphne runs out. [Track 1 ends]

2 INT. TARDIS
[Track 2: Tranquility Spa] The Doctor is pacing round the console as usual, the central column rising and falling in flight. Zach enters, carrying a large, aged, leather-bound book. He cradles it in his arms, reading it as he enters. The Doctor perks her head up as he does.

DOCTOR
Ah, see you listened to me. Found the library easily, then?

ZACH
Just about. You've got more books than I think anyone has ever seen, let alone read. Everything from Alice in Wonderland to Shearman's Guide to Zero Gravity Yo-Yoing. How would that even work?

DOCTOR
It doesn't, but that's the fun. Trying to make it work. I do like a good yo-yo. Should have one around here somewhere.

She starts patting down her pockets, and peeks at the book Zach is reading.

DOCTOR
What you got there?

ZACH
Oh, nothing.

DOCTOR
Really? Because it doesn't look like "nothing" to me, it looks more like an encyclopaedia.

ZACH
So what if it is?

The Doctor leans in closer, peeking her head down to try and see the cover. As she does, Zach snatches the book up.

DOCTOR
Physical copy of the Encyclopaedia Britannica. Very rare for a late edition. Very late, considering it's from 200 years in your future.

She reaches out and grabs the book.

ZACH
Hey! Get off!

They wrestle over it, until the Doctor snatches it out of Zach's grasp.

DOCTOR
You know the rules. No spoilers!

She snaps the book shut and places it under her arm, going back to the console. He frowns.

ZACH
Oh come on, we're in a time machine, for god's sake! What's the problem with looking at the future? I mean, what about the Crimean? What was wrong with looking at the future then?

DOCTOR
It's my job to show you the future, I control what you get to see, not you. There are rules.

ZACH
Oh, there are, are there?

DOCTOR
Yes. But luckily for you, I was thinking about showing you a bit more of the future anyway.

ZACH
Oh?

DOCTOR
Humanity's space-faring age. Earth's great voyage and expansion across the stars. Thought you'd be getting sick of Earth by now, so I'm taking you further than we've ever gone before.

She pulls the final lever, and the central column comes to a stop, the TARDIS landing.

ZACH
Where are we, then?

DOCTOR
Salem.

ZACH
Salem? I thought you said we were going to see Earth's "great voyage across the stars."

DOCTOR
We are. We're on Salem the planet, not Salem the city. Human colony planet in the 25th century. It's a problem with you lot, can't think of a new name for things, you always keep coming back to the same ones over and over again. New York, New Earth, Barcelona. Anyway, I've always wanted to check this place out, never found the time. Shall we see if it's as good as the stories say they are?

A grin grows across both their faces as they bound over to the TARDIS door. The Doctor stops, and puts her hand on the door handle.

DOCTOR
Zach Ellis. It is my personal privilege to welcome you to...

She swings open the door.

3 EXT. SALEM STREETS - DAY
The TARDIS door opens. The Doctor steps out, her arm swinging outwards in the gesture of a showman as Zach steps out behind her.

DOCTOR
...Salem!

They both look around and the smiles fall from their faces as around them is a perfectly ordinary Earth city from the early 20th century, the TARDIS parked in a dingy alleyway.

ZACH
Right, so I'm guessing either some global catastrophe has sent this futuristic human colony back in time five hundred years, or the TARDIS has taken us to the wrong place. Again.

DOCTOR
The TARDIS never takes us to the wrong place. She... just got a bit confused is all. Two Salems to choose from, anyone could have made that mistake.

ZACH
Right, And how far is Salem, the planet, from Salem, the city?

DOCTOR
It's...it's practically next door. Easy mistake to make, old girl.

The Doctor strokes the side of the TARDIS, comforting her.

DOCTOR
Don't you listen to the big nasty man.

ZACH
I was hoping for flying cars, big metal sci-fi cities, cyborg people, but I suppose this'll have to do for now. Horses and carriages, everybody dressed like extras from Downton, and... a great big wooden stake?

DOCTOR
Stake? Wooden stake or yummy steak?

ZACH
Wooden, unfortunately. Now you've made me hungry.

DOCTOR
I can't imagine so. The TARDIS didn't land us that far back. At least I hope she didn't. I don't have good experience with witch hunters.

ZACH
Doctor, I'm telling you, look.

He points across the town square in front of them. In its centre, a wooden stake surrounded by sticks and hay.

DOCTOR
No, no, that can't be right. This is the early 20th century - I can smell it.

ZACH
Could just be a bonfire. Some sort of local festival? Like a Guy Fawkes night?

DOCTOR
No, look at it. That pole in the middle is definitely for tying someone to. I should know, I've been tied to plenty in my time. Something's wrong here. The timelines around this place, their all bent, twisted. Feels like a bad hangover.

She rubs her forehead, groaning in pain.

ZACH
Can we hurry up and ask someone then? I don't like it when you're being ominous.

DOCTOR
Am I being ominous? I thought I got out of that habit five or six bodies ago.

ZACH
Also, what do you mean you can smell it's the 20th century? All I can smell is...smoke.

DOCTOR
Smoke?

She closes her eyes and takes a sniff.

DOCTOR
You're right, it does smell a bit fiery. Coming from...over there I think.

She points, and opens her eyes. She's pointing to the court building, from which smoke is rising.

DOCTOR
Ah. That can't be good.

A noise comes from behind them, a metal bin toppling over. Zach turns to see the rubbish falling onto the street, and a scruffy looking woman, Daphne from the court. She looks right at him startled and terrified, before hurrying off.

ZACH
Hey! Are you ok?

DOCTOR
Zach? What's the matter?

ZACH
There was a girl. I think she was watching us, she looked scared.

DOCTOR
Our clothes are a bit anachronistic for this time period, but you get used to the funny looks after a while. Come on, we've got to find out what's going on with that stake.

ZACH
You go on. I'll go after her. I want to make sure she's ok.

DOCTOR
I suppose the place isn't looking too deadly yet. Suit yourself. I'll meet you in the square in an hour. Probably. Don't get into trouble.

ZACH
I'll try.

He mutters to himself.

ZACH
However impossible that seems to be around you...

They both walk off in opposite directions. [Track 2 ends]

4 EXT. TOWN SQUARE – DAY
[Track 3: She Was A Good Kid] People are spilling out from the main doors into the town square, coughing and spluttering from the smoke. The Doctor launches herself over barrels and other things littering the street, making her way through the crowd to the front.

DOCTOR
Is everybody alright? Anyone hurt? Anyone need help?

The judge steps forward, coughing.

JUDGE
I think everybody's clear. Except Daniels. Poor man. The fire service should be on their way soon. I'd call for an ambulance, but I don't think there's anything can be done for him now.

DOCTOR
Why? What happened?

JUDGE
Went up in flames where he stood. Right after he went to take that woman away.

DOCTOR
What woman?

JUDGE
Daphne Hayman. Surely you'd know about what's been happening. Hang on- you're from out of town, right? Don't recognise that accent of yours.

DOCTOR
You could say that.

The Judge looks her up and down.

JUDGE
What you doing here then? A damn circus move in overnight?

DOCTOR
Oi. I'll have you know this style is all the rage in the outer colonies of the Fourth Human Empire.

JUDGE
Can't say I've ever heard of any empire callin' themselves the 'human' empire.

DOCTOR
You wouldn't, it doesn't exist for another fifteen thousand years. And mostly not on Earth. Anyway, if we could get past my superb dress sense for one second, can we get back to what is going on here?

She puts her hands on her hips, throwing him a serious, deathly glare. [Track 3 ends]

5 EXT. ALLEYWAY – DAY
[Track 4: The Big Four] Zach jogs through the streets trying to find the girl. He stops as he passes by a few crates in an alley, and hears a woman sobbing behind it. He moves toward it, and the woman's form comes into view as he does.

ZACH
Hello?

She looks up, startled and frightened.

DAPHNE
Stay away from me.

ZACH
It's alright. I'm not gonna hurt you.

DAPHNE
It's not that I'm worried about. I'm worried I'll hurt you.

ZACH
I'd prefer it if you didn't.

DAPHNE
That's the thing, I can't help it. Please just leave me.

ZACH
I'm not gonna leave you alone crying. I'm new to town, I just arrived here with a friend. I'm here to help, and you clearly need some. I'm Zach.

He holds out his hand. She tentatively takes it, and stands up.

DAPHNE
You really are new here. You're not like the others.

ZACH
Why? What are the others like?

DAPHNE
Cruel. Unwelcoming. Judgemental. But I suppose they're right to be. I don't deserve kindness.

ZACH
Don't say that, that is definitely not true. Everybody deserves kindness, everyone deserves help.

DAPHNE
Not me.

ZACH
I can't possibly see how that can be true. You seem nice enough. Why don't you deserve to be helped?

DAPHNE
Because...because I'm a witch.

His eyes widen.

6 EXT. TOWN SQUARE - DAY
The Judge raises an eyebrow at the Doctor.

JUDGE
Who are you then? Salem ain't the most welcoming of strangers at present.

DOCTOR
Right. Yes. Sorry. Uh. Quicker if I show you.

She reaches into her coat pocket and pulls out the psychic paper. The man snatches it from her hand and reads it.

JUDGE
Official representative of the Vatican- A woman priest?

DOCTOR
You got a problem with that? You could always take it up with his Holiness himself if you doubt my credentials. Good mates, Pius and me. Loves a good ping-pong match.

JUDGE
Pardon me, ma'am, but how do I know this ain't some Devil's trickery?

DOCTOR
Been having much trouble with Devil trickery lately? I couldn't help but notice the stake, but I always thought that people stopped burning innocent people as witches three centuries ago.

JUDGE
Unfortunately, Salem has fallen into the Devil's grasp. Witches once again plague this town and its good folk.

DOCTOR
Well, if you could just direct me to any of these witches, I'll be the judge of that.

SAMUEL
I don't think you will be. But I sure can show you the proof you need.

The Doctor turns around to see Samuel approaching from behind her.

DOCTOR
Oh? And you would be?

SAMUEL
Samuel Glanvill. Mayor of Salem.

DOCTOR
Are you sure? I've never heard of you.

SAMUEL
Do you keep record of the members of the Salem town council?

DOCTOR
Not really, now I think about it. I just tend to know really odd specific things like this about Earth. Must have been a reflex action. Anyway, what's all this talk of witches about?

SAMUEL
Come with me, and I'll show you.

He leads the Doctor away. [Track 4 ends]

7 EXT. ALLEYWAY - DAY
[Track 5: Tendril] He scoffs.

ZACH
Don't be ridiculous, course you're not a witch.

DAPHNE
But I am, I know I am. My soul has been tainted by Satan's infernal touch.

ZACH
Come on now, you should know as well as I do, witches aren't real.

DAPHNE
There is no other explanation for what's happened to me. The powers that have possessed me.

ZACH
Powers? What do you mean, powers?

DAPHNE
It isn't the first time this has happened. And it certainly won't be the last. But women, all round the town have been manifesting unholy magics within themselves, and done the most terrible things.

ZACH
That sounds...terrible. How is this happening?

DAPHNE
It is a punishment. Retribution for our sins against God.

ZACH
I'm sure that isn't true. I'm sure whatever's going in here, it's definitely not the work of God. I've got a friend who deals with weird stuff like this. She's probably halfway to solving it all by now.

DAPHNE
She? I doubt any woman can purge the curse put upon Salem.

ZACH
You've obviously never met her. Come on, I'll take you to her. Whatever's going on, she can help you. Trust me.

He offers out his hand for her to take. She looks back at him, unsure. [Track 5 ends]

8 INT. MORTUARY - DAY
[Track 6: Something I Can't Explain] A coroner in an apron opens the door, holding it open as Samuel and the Doctor follow in behind him.

CORONER
Just through here.

He walks over to the far end of the room, where metallic doors to the freezers stand. He goes over to one of them and opens it, pulling out a body of a man, severely burned. The Doctor comes in to take a closer look.

SAMUEL
Edward Colby. Lived one block away from me, met each other in church every Sunday. One of the most recent victims of Satan's corrupt touch. You say you're a doctor, examine him yourself. Tell me how he died.

The Doctor reaches into her coat for the sonic screwdriver, then looks back at Samuel and hesitates. She whispers.

DOCTOR
Best not, if they're burning people as witches. And you should stop relying on it so much anyway. No better scientific scanners than the six senses.

She examines the body closer, picking up an arm, feeling over the skin.

DOCTOR
Obviously a fire of some sort. But the severity of the burning, his skin melted. I'd say he was burned alive.

SAMUEL
Where he stood, in his own home.

DOCTOR
You mean, spontaneous combustion?

SAMUEL
Not so spontaneous. Daphne Hayman, the woman who was being tried in court today, she was the Colby's housemaid. The last person to see Edward alive. His wife went to fetch something from the next room, when she came back he was up in flames, with her standing by, watching. Appreciating her handiwork.

DOCTOR
Hang on, don't you think that's a bit of a leap? That level of combustion couldn't have been done in a few seconds, never mind just one person on their own.

SAMUEL
Why are you so quick to defend her?

DOCTOR
Why are you so quick to condemn her? What's really going on in this town, what's all this talk of witches? Something's gone incredibly wrong here, I can feel it. Tell me why you're so scared of a fairy story you should have grown out of three hundred years ago.

SAMUEL
A fairy story, is it? You seem quite faithless for a representative of the Church.

DOCTOR
Not faithless, just inquisitive. Questioning. Does the church well to have an occasional open mind right in their business, keeps a good balance.

SAMUEL
I'm not entirely sure your balance will help our plight. Handfuls of women all around town suddenly make the true natures known, displaying their unnatural command of the dark forces, poisoning the good people of Salem with Satan's black magics. Nobody knew what to do until I stepped in as mayor. I have hunted down every one of these heretics and cleansed this land of evil. I don't intend to stop because a single tiny woman, no less, tells me to disbelieve the evidence of my own eyes. How do I know you're not in league with the witches yourself, how do I know you're not one of them?

DOCTOR
Have you got any proof? Well, I don't think that'd matter anyway. Listen, something is definitely not right here, but condemning people to death on the spot is wrong. I'm an expert in the unnatural, it's why the church sent me here specifically. Let me conduct my own investigations, and then I'll let you make your own judgement based on my findings. Please, just for this moment, stop the killing.

SAMUEL
And risk more deaths, like this?

He gestures down towards Edward's body.

DOCTOR
I'm a very quick investigator. And very good at stopping deaths at the last minute. Trust me. I can fix this.

SAMUEL
All right. If you're as good as you say you are. Find the Hayman girl, bring her into the authorities. Then I'll know where your true loyalties lie. And get this man covered up. Let him have some dignity.

He storms out of the room. The coroner moves in to put the body away.

DOCTOR
Right then. Off on a witch hunt. Nice to be on the other end of the stick. Just call me Witchfinder General. Now, what does every Witchfinder General need?

She turns to the coroner as he shuts the freezer door. He looks up towards her.

DOCTOR
Keep up, these aren't rhetorical.

CORONER
I guess a Witchfinder General would need... a deputy?

DOCTOR
A deputy, of course! Top marks! Have yourself a… a...

She pats down her pockets, digs around in them, and eventually pulls out a yo-yo.

DOCTOR
Ah! That's where it is.

She hands it to him, and he takes it, confused.

DOCTOR
Sorry, ran out of jelly babies. Right, deputy. Where can I find a deputy. I swear I used to have one. Oh! I do have one! Come on then, Za...

She looks next to her. No Zach.

DOCTOR
Ugh. Every time! I tell them not to wander off, they do! I'm gonna have to start putting them on leashes.

She walks out of the mortuary. [Track 6 ends]

9 INT. MAYOR'S OFFICE - DAY
[Track 7: He'll Be Back Any Minute] Samuel walks in, passing by a front desk with a secretary at a front desk. He stops as he comes to.

SAMUEL
Hey, er, Cindy, wasn't it?

SANDY
Sandy, sir.

SAMUEL
Cindy, whatever, I've got stuff to do in my office, don't come in. And don't let anybody else in either.

She goes to open her mouth to respond, but he walks off past her towards his office before she can. She turns and watches him go, looking annoyed. You'd expect her to flip him some form of rude gesture, but she appears to control and restrain herself.

CUT TO:

Samuel walks into his office, closing the door behind him. He locks a latch on the door, which seems new, polished and shiny compared to the aged wood. He walks over to the window and looks out, before shutting the blinds. He sits behind his desk, closes his eyes, and breaths out. The lights in the office dim, and the blinds rattle, as if hit by a small breeze. He lays his hands on the table, and a light rising across it, as if burning, in the shape of an inverted pentagram, scorching itself into the wood of the desktop.

SAMUEL
There is a new element. A woman calling herself the Doctor. She is trying to intervene.

An unearthly voice raises around the office, as if coming from the wind itself

VOICE
Does she know of our presence?

SAMUEL
I don't think so. But she knows something is wrong. I suspect she is like us; she does not belong. I would see her origin.

VOICE
As you command, the spirits shall obey.

The wind around the office picks up, and we see flashes of the Doctor. Meeting Samuel in the square, in the TARDIS with Zach. Samuel's face again, this time squinting, struggling. The Doctor again, with Zach in the Crimean, in the future and with Florence Nightingale. Samuel's face again, grimacing and struggling with the constant flow of images. The Doctor again in the Synthetic Corp factory, then with Dwight, Kaede and Jon on the Dalek ship, Uluru, Bastille Prison, Idesio, and finally her falling onto the TARDIS floor, Emmeline Pankhurst by her side, in her previous self's clothes. Samuel smacks his hands flat on the table, opening his eyes.

SAMUEL
So much life. So many places.

VOICE
She is not of this world.

SAMUEL
Almost certainly. She is not all that she seems. She must be stopped. She cannot be allowed to intervene.

He wipes his hands over the table, and the flames extinguish under them. The door to the office opens, and Sandy walks in.

SANDY
Are you okay in here, sir? I heard banging.

SAMUEL
I told you, I was not to be disturbed!

SANDY
I know, sir, but I've been knocking on the door. You didn't answer.

Samuel gets up from his desk abruptly, and Sandy flinches. He walks slowly towards her. He reaches her, and she steps back, clearly feeling intimidated. He reaches out and grabs her cheeks, squeezing them firmly in his hand.

SAMUEL
I told you… I was not… to be... disturbed. If you disobey me again… you can't even begin to imagine the consequences.

He throws her face from his hand, and she lets out a breath, before rubbing her face and running out of the office. He watches her go, then looks down at his hand. The human skin has darkened to a deep dark green and grey, the nails extended almost into half-formed claws. He clasps his other hand around it, hiding and rubbing it. He closes his eyes and mutters to himself, some sort of ancient or alien language, before he opens his eyes again, and looks back at his hand, now returned to normal. He looks at his other hand, in which he clasps a long hair, seemingly plucked from Sandy's head. He pulls a tissue from his pocket and wraps the hair in it. [Track 7 ends]

10 EXT. ALLEYWAY - DAY
[Track 8: Tournament of Shadows] Zach starts to head down the alley.

ZACH
Come on, then. We should go find her.

DAPHNE
I mean, if you think she really can help.

ZACH
Trust me, she can. There's nothing I've seen her not be able to do. Except steer her own bloody ship properly. Let's go.

They both turn to leave the alleyway, but see the crowd from the courtroom. A fire crew has arrived to deal with the flames, but the crowd have now turned away and started to move across the town again.

DAPHNE
We can't go out there. If they see me, they'll execute me on the spot.

ZACH
Fair enough. So, front way's out, that leaves us the back. Let's hope no one's lurking in the shadows.

As they turn to go the other way, he stumbles into someone waiting in the shadows at the other end of the alley. He stumbles back and yelps as he does. The figure yelps back. It's the Doctor. As she finishes yelping, she moves towards Zach and puts her finger to his lips.

DOCTOR
Ssshhh! Did you miss the angry mob of villagers looking for you outside? You'll bring them right on top of us.

ZACH
That's not a mob, it's just people.

DOCTOR
With the big potential to quickly become an angry mob. Not much of a difference. Why are you hiding?

ZACH
We're hiding from the mob!

DOCTOR
There isn't a mob, not yet. Anyway, good job I've found you. We need to catch a witch. Well, not actually a witch. Well, maybe, still a bit fuzzy on the details, we'll work it out as we go. Who's this? You're not supposed to pick up random strangers off the street, that's my job.

ZACH
This is Daphne. Daphne, this is the Doctor. The friend I was telling you about.

The Doctor gives her a wave.

DOCTOR
Hiya. Wait a minute, did you say Daphne? You're not Daphne Hayman, are you?

DAPHNE
I..I should be going...I need to-

She turns to leave.

DOCTOR
No, no, no, don't worry, I'm not here to kill you. Oh, no, that's not reassuring. Try again. I'm here to help. I'm not going to hand you over to anyone or tie you to a stake, I just want to help.

Daphne looks at her, scared and unsure, then turns to Zach.

ZACH
You can trust her. I'd put my life in her hands any day. And I often do. You can too.

She looks back at the Doctor, who tries to give her best reassuring smile, though looks a bit awkward doing it.

DAPHNE
You promise not to hand me over to them?

The Doctor crosses her hearts.

DOCTOR
Cross my hearts. Scout's honour. No, that's two different things. But two's better than one, eh?

Daphne hesitates.

DAPHNE
Okay. but only if you promise not to hand me over to them.

DOCTOR
Oh yeah, of course. I wouldn't give you to that lot even if you were guilty.

ZACH
Guilty? Guilty of what?

DOCTOR
Yeah, I've been meaning to get to that bit. You didn't happen to make a man spontaneously combust, did you?

DAPHNE
I...uhm...I don't...

DOCTOR
Make someone burst into flames.

DAPHNE
Oh...uhhh...I...I don't know what happened, I don't know how I did it, I don't…

ZACH
Doctor, she said something about some sort of power she'd gotten, just out of nowhere.

DOCTOR
What sort of power?

DAPHNE
I don't know. It's been happening to girls all over the town. Weird things happening around us, and we get called witches for it.

The Doctor pulls out the sonic screwdriver, and points it at Daphne, then looks at the readout.

DAPHNE
What's that? A magic wand?

DOCTOR
Sonic screwdriver. Not magic, more science… wow. That's definitely not normal. The sonic's not registering you as human, it doesn't know what to register you as. Like it can't make up its mind. Never done that before.

ZACH
I don't think I've ever seen something the sonic can't do before.

DOCTOR

Well, it can't do wood. That I know for sure. But this, I don't know. We should take you back to the TARDIS. She'll know what to make of you. Come on.

The Doctor leads the two of them round the back of the alley. [Track 8 ends]

11 EXT. TOWN SQUARE - DAY
[Track 9: The Judge Stink] The crowd from the courtroom has mainly dispersed, but the Judge remains, overlooking the courthouse as the firefighters are finishing up. Samuel approaches him.

SAMUEL
Your Honour.

The Judge turns around.

JUDGE
Ah, Mr Glanvill. Looks like they're just finishing up now. Can't imagine I'd want to be in your shoes right now, having to arrange the cleanup.

He laughs and looks at Samuel, who doesn't laugh back.

SAMUEL
The Doctor, have you seen her anywhere?

JUDGE
That woman from the Vatican? Not since she left with you, no. Why?

SAMUEL
I've sent her off to try and find the witch girl.

JUDGE
Are you sure that's wise?

SAMUEL
I couldn't risk the lives of any more of our civilians. Though I am starting to question her, she may be more than she seems.

JUDGE
You mean, she may be in league with the witches?

SAMUEL
Perhaps. Just a gut instinct. But whatever side she's on, her actions will soon reveal her true intentions. Just keep an eye out for her, would you?

JUDGE
Of course, Mr Mayor. We'll weed those witches out yet, just you watch.

SAMUEL
I see you're eager to please, Your Honour. That is good. It shows dedication to the cause. But do not become so light humoured when speaking of them. Never forget what these creatures are. They are abhorrent monsters, heathens, worshippers of Satan himself. They deserve no mercy, no forgiveness. Only death.

JUDGE
Uh, yes- Of course, Mr Mayor. Forgive me.

SAMUEL
All is forgiven. Now prove your dedication to the cause. We must not remain idle. Gather the townspeople up again. There are more witches to be ousted.

JUDGE
Are you sure, Mr Mayor? We can hardly try them without a courtroom.

SAMUEL
What did I just tell you? A witch does not deserve mercy. They take advantage of us in every wake of life, they shall not take advantage of us when we have them in our grasp. Witches always works in collectives, in covens. Where there is one, you shall certainly find another.

JUDGE
But we've found so many witches already…

SAMUEL
Do you doubt me, Your Honour? How do you think I became Mayor of Salem? This town is under a plague, clutched in Satan's grasp, I intend to liberate it. I understand these abominations, I know how they operate. They must all be wiped from the face of this Earth.

JUDGE
Yes, Mr Mayor. Of course, I understand. I'll...rally up the people.

SAMUEL
Good man. You're doing god's work. Never forget that. Now go.

The judge scuttles off, while Samuel watches him smirking. [Track 9 ends]

12 EXT. SALEM STREETS - DAY
The Doctor leads Zach and Daphne towards the TARDIS, bringing the key out from her pocket.

ZACH
Doctor, are you sure this is a good idea?

DOCTOR
Yeah, she'll be fine. TARDIS scanner's never hurt anyone. Well, anyone human at least.

ZACH
No, I mean...the TARDIS isn't very 20th century, is it?

DOCTOR
I know the decor's a bit out of Daphne's time but...oh. Oh, I see what you mean. The bigger on the inside bit. You humans, you're always so eager to point it out.

ZACH
But I mean, it's gonna be especially bad here. Not just 20th century, but 20th century looking for witches. You know, women who seem to possess unearthly power or objects.

DOCTOR
Yes, yes, I get the idea. Leave it to me, I've done this loads of times.

The Doctor steps away from the door and towards Daphne.

DOCTOR
Now, Daphne, before we go into the TA- into my box just here, just keep in mind that I am definitely not a witch.

DAPHNE
No, I didn't think you were. But that box, you're not with the cops, are you?

DOCTOR
No, no, it's just...something I've borrowed, for a while. Quite a long while now. But just bear that in mind. It's not magic, or witchcraft, just a box. Okay?

DAPHNE
Okay…

DOCTOR
Great. Now, come on in.

[Track 10: Official Eviction Notice] The Doctor goes back to the door and unlocks it, holding it open for Daphne to enter. Daphne walks in…

13 INT. TARDIS
...and her jaw drops in amazement, as Zach and the Doctor walk in behind her.

DAPHNE
How is this…? It's…

DOCTOR
Not magic, is what it is. Now, come on up here and let's have a proper look at you.

The Doctor gestures to a spot next to the console. Daphne steps towards it, looking around the room in disbelief. The Doctor hops up towards the console and begins operating the controls. A spotlight briefly shines over Daphne, and she shivers.

DAPHNE
Ooh, that tickles. What is this?

DOCTOR
Just a quick biological scan, shouldn't take a mo.

The light fades away, and the Doctor moves over to a display readout on the console.

DOCTOR
Here we go! Oh. That's definitely not good.

DAPHNE
What is it?

DOCTOR
This, here, is your DNA. It's the basis of all human life, it determines how you grow, how you look, how your organs work, everything.

Zach moves over next to them to look at the readout.

ZACH
That definitely doesn't look like normal DNA.

DOCTOR
No, it isn't. It's still human, but something's been added somehow. A new section of genome that isn't.

DAPHNE
Isn't human?

DOCTOR
Yes. Not enough to change you physically, but enough to make a big change.

ZACH
That will be what's causing these powers then.

DOCTOR
Powers?

ZACH
Yeah, that's what Daphne told me, why they were accusing people of being witches.

DOCTOR
And presumably how you were able to set Edward Colby on fire.

DAPHNE
I didn't mean to, I honestly don't understand what happened or how I did it.

DOCTOR
It's fine, I believe you. It only makes sense. Sudden rewriting of your genome, especially with something non-human, of course your body wouldn't be able to process it correctly. Whatever you did, it wasn't your fault, it's all down to whatever or whoever did this to you.

DAPHNE
Whoever?

DOCTOR
Advanced genome splicing like this, especially on live subjects, I'd be surprised if it's all happening by accident.

DAPHNE
You mean, somebody did this to me?

DOCTOR
Unfortunately. I'm not quite sure how, must definitely be some sort of advanced alien technology, but I'm more concerned about the why. Why did somebody do this to you?

DAPHNE
Your guess is as good as mine.

ZACH
When did you first notice that this had happened to you, like it had the other girls?

DAPHNE
I didn't realise it had until...Mr Colby.

DOCTOR
What happened just before that?

DAPHNE
I was pouring the Colby's their afternoon tea in the sitting room. Mrs Colby left to go check on their daughter in the next room, and…

[Track 10 ends]

ZACH
It's okay, you can tell us.

DAPHNE
I... uh...I was clumsy, I dropped Mr Colby's saucer and smashed it on the floor. He was furious, he started shouting at me. I apologised, tried to clean it up, but he...he hit me. He did so often enough, I thought I'd gotten used to it but...I just couldn't take it anymore. I wanted to scream, to run away. But before I could do anything, he… I could still hear his daughter crying while he screamed.

She begins crying. Zach approaches and hugs her, comforting her whilst the Doctor considers the information.

DOCTOR
A moment of great emotional distress. That would make sense, so many chemicals running through the body at once, so much information being pumped through the neurons in the brain, so much chaos all at once, it was inevitable that you'd lose control. No offence. Still got work to do in the people department.

[Track 11: Harpy Lair]

ZACH
Never mind that now. So, whoever's doing this, it wants the people they're targeting to lose control of these powers.

DOCTOR
A human body wouldn't be able to control any sort of unstable addition to its genome anyway, the emotional distress just makes it go haywire all at once. It's a wonder Daphne's still in one piece.

DAPHNE
Some of the other girls weren't so lucky. I remember Agnes Evans. When they sentenced her to death, she...they were cleaning her off the courtroom walls for a week.

DOCTOR
Right. Don't want to make you nervous, but I'd probably grab a tissue if I were you.

ZACH
Doctor!

DOCTOR
Sorry! I'm in thinking mode, my brain's occupied trying to figure everything out.

ZACH
And has it?

DOCTOR
I've got a few working theories. But I can't back any of them up from here. Come on, we've got to do some deeper digging. Find out who wants to fill Salem with witches, and why.

14 INT. MAYOR'S OFFICE - DAY
Samuel steps into his office and walks over to one of the bookshelves. He reaches behind it, pulling it out from the wall to reveal a secret gloomy staircase leading downwards. He steps onto it, closing the bookshelf behind him, and as he begins to move down it, we see candles on the wall lighting up into flame as he walks past, illuminating the space.

15 INT. SAMUEL'S LAIR - DAY
He walks down, and the passage opens out into a room, which bursts into light as he enters. It reveals walls covered in glass jars holding various plants, herbs, bit and, and sometimes whole, dead creatures. To one wall there is a table filled with glass mixing equipment, next to a bowl full of mysterious green liquid, and in the centre a five sided wooden table, engraved with the image of an inverted pentagram. Hanging underneath it are various flashing wires and cables, which run under the floor and connect to various pieces of alien technology around the room. It looks like a mix between the Doctor's workshop and a witches' cottage. Samuel moves over to the cauldron, picking up a glass beaker from the shelves, and collecting it within. He then moves over to the table, pouring the mixture into the indentation in its centre, pooling the liquid across the shape of the pentagram. Smoke begins to rise from it, and the lines of the pentagram glow with ethereal and sickly green light.

SAMUEL
Sorry, Doctor. But Salem ain't big enough for the two of us. I have big plans for this planet. And I'm not letting you stand in my way.

He reaches over to one of the other shelves, and pulls out a knife, seemingly carved from the jaw of an animal. He pulls up his jacket sleeve, and presses the blade down onto his arm. He holds the arm over the centre of the table, allowing the dark purple blood that spouts from the cut to drip down into the green liquid. The area around the cut on his arm starts to transform into that grotesque green and grey scaled skin, before he pulls the knife away, and it starts to fade back to normal, the wound sealing up. He reaches into his pocket, and pulls out his handkerchief.

CUT TO:

16 EXT. SALEM STREETS - DAY
Sandy walks blissfully down the street. She smiles at the people walking past her, greeting them as they go. As she does, she absent mindedly scratches her hair.

CUT TO:

17 INT. SAMUEL'S LAIR - DAY
Back to Samuel, unwrapping the hanky and taking out the hair. He looks at it, twirling it in the light, before dropping it into the table. It hits the liquid.

CUT TO:

18 EXT. SALEM STREETS - DAY
Sandy suddenly stops and clutches her head, gasping in pain.

SANDY
Please. Help me. Someone. My head…

Everyone around her stays still, staring at her in fear and confusion. She gasps, opening her eyes, revealing them to be glowing a bright lime green.

CUT TO:

19 INT. SAMUEL'S LAIR - DAY
Back to Samuel, as we see him gasping as well, his eyes lighting up in the same sickly glow. He strains himself, as if adjusting to a new sensation, then gestures his hand upwards, as if lifting something.

CUT TO:

20 EXT. SALEM STREETS - DAY
Her body begins to lift from the ground, towards the middle of the town square. Everyone around the place screams in terror, some chanting 'witch!' We see the Judge running towards the square to watch.

SANDY
I confess my sins. I confess to you, the people of Salem...

CUT TO:

21 INT. SAMUEL'S LAIR - DAY

SAMUEL
...and before almighty God, that I might escape the eternal...

CUT TO:

22 EXT. SALEM STREETS - DAY

SANDY
...damnation of Hell. I am a practitioner of black magic, a worshipper of Satan. A witch. I and my coven have committed unspeakable acts against you. I beg for forgiveness before God. For my own, and for my abominable accessibility. Daphne Hayman, and the Doctor. I lay our sins before you, so that you may pass judgement on our damned souls.

CUT TO:

23 INT. SAMUEL'S LAIR - DAY
He moves his hands across his body in a ritualistic gesture, before placing his palms together, then briskly brushing them against each other like a stone on a flint.

CUT TO:

24 EXT. SALEM STREETS - DAY
Sandy, suspended in the air, her body explodes into a brilliant green flame. The people gasp in horror as she screams, before her black charred bones fall to the floor, scattering themselves across the pavement. The Judge looks at the bones, horrified.

JUDGE
The Doctor. She said...the Doctor. Everyone! She confessed it herself. The Doctor, this stranger to Salem, is a witch! She intends to destroy our peaceful way of life, corrupt our souls with dark magic. We must find her, and the Hayman girl, and make them atone for their sins, as this witch did.

A crowd begins to gather round him, though he sees some people standing back, still tentative.

JUDGE
Come on! Are you going to stand for these heretics invading our town? Join the cause, help us, help yourselves. Find the witches!

People around him begin cheering and chanting. Back to Samuel as the green light fades from his eyes, and he smirks. His work is done. [Track 11 ends]

25 EXT. ALLEYWAY - DAY
The Doctor, Daphne and Zach all step out of the TARDIS.

DOCTOR
Right gang, try and stay conspicuous. Remember, we're harboring a dangerous fugitive.

ZACH
Doctor, seriously, cut it out.

DOCTOR
What? Just trying to inject a bit of fun into the situation. Taking down a dangerous alien life form terrorising the innocent should always be a fun and exciting activity.

ZACH
People have died.

DOCTOR
I know, Zach. That's why I'm eager to get this all sorted out. Now then Daphne probably should have led with this, but who would you say is the most likely candidate to be behind all this?

DAPHNE
I...I don't know, plenty of people have been eager to get rid of us.

DOCTOR
Anyone taken a particular lead? Anyone egging the town on more than anybody else.

DAPHNE
I mean, there's the judge, he's tried all the witches. I say tried, he condemned them all to death on the spot, none of them had a chance.

DOCTOR
Think back to when this all started. Who led the charge, who told you it was witches?

Daphne thinks for a moment, then her face lights up in realisation. [Track 12: Whitechapel Terminus 0:00 - 1:55]

DAPHNE
It was the mayor! When it first started happening, nobody had any idea what was going on. There was talk of getting people involved, specialists. We didn't really know who to go to - no-one thought witches were around anymore. Anyway, that's when Mr Glanvill came forward. He told us we must take the matter into our own hands, that witches had returned to Salem.

DOCTOR
Yes, he was the one who sent me to find you. Any idea where he is?

DAPHNE
No, I've been with you and Zach the whole time.

DOCTOR
Right, got to find him ourselves. People burning women as witches aren't going to listen to reason, so we'll have to do it his way.

ZACH
Make him look like a witch.

DOCTOR
Exactly, which is why I'm hoping he's an alien. Now, best way to get him in front of everyone...

ZACH
Wait a sec, what's all that noise?

They listen to the shouts and chants of the crowd. The Doctor creeps to the end of the alleyway to get a closer look, Zach and Daphne following close behind.

DOCTOR
Ooo, an angry mob. Love an angry mob. No pitchforks though.

ZACH
I think that might be a good thing.

DOCTOR
Why?

ZACH
Because they're looking for you. Listen.

The Doctor listens, hearing the mob chant her name, along with 'witches' and 'burn her'.

DOCTOR
Perfect! Samuel must have sussed me out, convinced everyone I'm a witch.

ZACH
What do you mean perfect? That's very bad.

DOCTOR
Like I said, we need to get Samuel out in front of everyone.

ZACH
And?

DOCTOR
And, they still have the decency to at least try witches in court. You two have got the hard job.

ZACH
Oh great.

DOCTOR
Won't be that bad, I promise. I need you to get into Samuel's house, his office, wherever. Find out how he's doing this, anything that we can use to prove what he's doing, and storm into the court very dramatically in the nick of time. You'll need this.

She reaches into her pocket, pulls out the sonic screwdriver, and hands it to Zach.

ZACH
Woah, okay. Are you sure?

DOCTOR
Yeah, it'll be fine. Just try to bring it back in one piece. Now, 20th century North East America, setting 64 should do the trick with doors.

ZACH
What if we need it for something that isn't a door?

DOCTOR
You'll figure it out. Quickly, go now.

ZACH
Okay. Don't do anything stupid.

DOCTOR
Come on Zach, you know me.

ZACH
Yes, I do, that's exactly why I'm telling you.

DOCTOR
Oi! Cheek.

ZACH
I'll see you later.

Zach walks off with Daphne down the alley.

DOCTOR
Right then. Getting captured by an angry mob for being a witch. You know what they say, third time's the charm. Now, what to say. I surrender? Nah, they're gonna try and kill you anyway. Take me to your leader? No. Uh...

She looks back at the mob, who are quickly approaching.

DOCTOR
Right, just go for it.

She steps out from behind the alley wall, into a clear view of the crowd.

DOCTOR
Uh...hocus...pocus? Come on, Doctor...

JUDGE
There she is! Get her!

DOCTOR
Wow, that actually worked.

A group of people move forward to take hold of her. They grab her by the arms and begin dragging her.

DOCTOR
Alright, alright, no need to be so brutal. I'll come along peacefully. Or will I? Wooohooo!

She tries to raise her hands to wiggle her fingers menacingly, but the people drag her arms back down again.

DOCTOR
Ow! Stop it, I'm cooperating.

CUT TO:

Zach and Daphne sneak along the empty streets.

ZACH
So, any idea where Sam's house is?

DAPHNE
No, I'm afraid. But I do know his office. My friend's a receptionist there, she'll be able to get us in. It's over this way.

They walk off towards the Mayor's office, round a building by the side of it. Zach steps out towards it, while Daphne hangs back tentatively. The door to the building swings open, and Samuel walks out. Zach doesn't notice, and Daphne quickly runs out, grabbing Zach and dragging him back out of sight.

ZACH
What are you do…

He sees Samuel.

ZACH
Oh. Cheers.

DAPHNE
Shh!

They watch as Samuel walks off, towards the direction of the mob.

ZACH
Sorry. I did enough sneaking like this in Crimea. Wasn't very good at stealth then, either.

DAPHNE
Neither am I.

ZACH
Well, you're doing a better job than I am.

DAPHNE
Probably because now I know I could explode at any moment.

ZACH
That is a very fair point. Looks like the coast is clear, let's get inside.

They run up the stairs to the door and slip inside. [Track 12 ends]

26 INT. MAYOR'S OFFICE - DAY
Both of them enter, the reception desk notably empty. Daphne looks concerned as she notices this.

DAPHNE
Sandy? Psst? Sandy?

ZACH
Not here?

DAPHNE
Maybe she's gone home for her lunch break.

ZACH
Can we get in without her?

DAPHNE
Normally no, but what about that thing the Doctor gave you?

ZACH
Oh yeah, the sonic.

He reaches into his pocket and brings it out.

DAPHNE
Samuel's office should be in the back somewhere.

They move across the floor, to the office door. Zach holds up the sonic.

ZACH
Right then, so, setting 64, setting 64. How the heck do you actually pick settings on this thing? It's just one button!

Distraught, he aims the sonic at the door and buzzes it. Daphne tries the door, and it clicks open.

ZACH
Oh. Okay then. So that's how she does it.

They both walk in. [Track 13: The Hunter's Path]

DAPHNE
So, what exactly is it we're looking for?

ZACH
No idea. Something alien.

DAPHNE
How will we know if something is alien?

ZACH
Oh, we'll know. From experience, alien things tend to stick out quite a bit.

DAPHNE
And you would know?

ZACH
Oh yeah. Me and the Doctor, aliens is kinda what we do.

DAPHNE
Not witches then?

ZACH
No, not normally. Still, always good to expand your horizons, build new skills. Like I said, never been great at stealth. But I think you'll find my deductions skills are great.

He moves over to one of the bookshelves.

ZACH
There's always a clue in the bookshelves.

He starts pulling books off the shelf, flicking through their pages. As he brings out one of them, he drops it on the floor, then goes to pick it up. When he does, he hesitates, looking at marks on the wooden floor. Curved groves, as if something were dragged across it. He looks at them, then back up at the bookcase, before standing up and dragging it away from the wall, revealing the secret passage.

ZACH
Bingo!

He begins to walk down, and Daphne follows. They both flinch as the candles light up next to them.

ZACH
Oh, this is definitely what we were looking for.

They continue downwards, until they reach the hidden room at the bottom.

27 INT. SAMUEL'S LAIR - DAY
They look around at the creepy atmosphere of the lair.

ZACH
Looks like our Sammy was playing the hypocrite. He's got his own personal Hogwarts stashed away in his office.

DAPHNE
What's a Hogwart?

ZACH
Oh, yeah, sorry. Spoilers. Bit after your time. Now, where do we start here?

DAPHNE
Surely, any of this would be enough to condemn him as a witch.

ZACH
Yeah, but we've got no way of proving it's him on the spot. We've got to save the Doctor from being executed as well as outing him to the town.

DAPHNE
How do we do that?

ZACH
Like I said earlier. Always a clue in the bookshelves. You start over there, I'll look over here.

Daphne goes off to the other bookshelf and the two begin rummaging around.

28 INT. COURTROOM - DAY
The mob begins storming into the room, taking up the seats and pushing the Doctor forward into the stocks.

DOCTOR
Nice to see you have a backup courtroom. Shame about the old one really, I like a bit of courtroom drama. Been awhile since I've done any though. Glad there isn't the Valeyard to ruin it all this time round.

JUDGE
Shut up, witch! Your infernal prattling won't go on for much longer.

DOCTOR
Nice to know I'm welcome to the court. It's the personal touch that counts.

The people holding her shove her into the stock, slamming the gate shut behind her.

DOCTOR
What wonderful court escorts, you're so violent.

JUDGE
Enough!

The judge takes his seat at the head of the court, while the mob work themselves into a jury. At the back of the room, the door opens and Samuel walks in.

DOCTOR
I was wondering when you'd show up. Come to gloat, have you?

SAMUEL
What do you mean, Doctor? What's going on here?

DOCTOR
Come on now, you don't have to keep up the act with me. You knew I was onto you, so you turned everyone against me.

SAMUEL
Now, why would I want to do a thing like that?

DOCTOR
I'm not quite sure yet, but I've got some ideas.

SAMUEL
And have you any proof to present to the court?

DOCTOR
What was it that made you all think I'm a witch?

JUDGE
The confession of your accomplice, to the people of Salem. Sandy Tyler. In a last plea to save her soul from eternal damnation.

DOCTOR
And who is she?

SAMUEL
She was my receptionist. So horrible to imagine such wickedness close to my personal safety.

DOCTOR
Putting you in a perfect position to manipulate her into doing your bidding then, I'll bet.

SAMUEL
Come now Doctor, you're talking nonsense.

DOCTOR
Am I?

The crowd begin to mumble amongst themselves. Samuel glances over them, worried but keeping his composure.

29 INT. SAMUEL'S LAIR - DAY
Daphne at her shelf shuffles through the books, and lays her eyes on an ancient-looking leather tome. She brings it out and looks at it, skimming through the pages, which are scrawled with handwriting, sigils, symbols, diagrams of arcane equipment and incantations.

DAPHNE
Zach, come look at this.

Zach comes over from his shelf to have a look.

ZACH
This could be it, this looks like it's come straight out of Evil Dead.

Daphne throws him a confused glance.

ZACH
Sorry, more spoilers.

They begin reading through the pages together.

ZACH
Stuff about changing the...what does that say? "...enhancing the physical self beyond the natural order through the power of the spirits."

DAPHNE
That sounds like what the Doctor says. Changing people's DMA.

ZACH
DNA, yeah. Is there anything about changing it back?

DAPHNE
I don't think so, I can't see anything.

ZACH
What about if Sam might be an alien in disguise?

DAPHNE
It mentions people, but doesn't say anything about humans or man. Something about a...Lucerian form?

ZACH
Yeah, down here. Are there any pictures, or...

He turns a page, and his eyes widen.

ZACH
Yeah, that's definitely not a human.

DAPHNE
Here! Sculpting the flesh into new form!

ZACH
Perfect! Come on, we need to get to the Doctor!

DAPHNE
Shouldn't we read it first?

ZACH
No time, we can read it on the way. We'll have it sorted by the time we get there. Hopefully. Just once, I'd like to do something before the nick of time.

They both run back up the stairs, into the office. [Track 13 ends]

30 INT. COURTROOM - DAY
[Track 14: The End Is Never The Same] The Doctor wriggles to face the crowds, but struggles to, locked firmly in the stocks.

DOCTOR
When did Samuel arrive in Salem? When was the first anyone ever heard of him?

The people shuffle around, mumbling to themselves. The judge eventually speaks up.

JUDGE
Well, just after...just after...the witches started appearing.

DOCTOR
And it was Samuel who convinced you all it was witches, wasn't it? Did it ever occur to you to think why the witches have only started appearing now, after 230 years of peace and quiet?

SAMUEL
Doctor, I will not stand for this. You have no proof to support these outrageous claims.

DOCTOR
Not right now, but I soon will.

She smirks.

31 EXT. TOWN SQUARE - DAY
At the doors to the courthouse, Zach and Daphne run in, Daphne rushing through the pages of the book.

ZACH
Found anything yet?

DAPHNE
Give me a chance, I was barely taught to read properly by my mother. And she only learned to read when she was 30.

CUT TO:

32 INT. COURTHOUSE - DAY
Zach goes to the courtroom door and peeks inside, looking at the Doctor standing off against Samuel.

ZACH
He's in there with her. Let's hope he actually is an alien. Or this might have all been a wasted effort and she's about to be burned to death. Fingers crossed.

DAPHNE
Here! I think I've found it!

ZACH
Do it then, do it now!

DAPHNE
Wait a moment, I've never done witchcraft before. Well I have, but you know what I mean.

ZACH
Fine whatever, just do it quickly!

She gulps, now quite frantic.

33 INT. COURTROOM - DAY
He scoffs.

SAMUEL
Your Honour, you can't seriously take the word of this witch over myself, can you? Clearly she is trying to deceive you all, escape her rightful judgement at the hand of god.

JUDGE
I suppose you're right Samuel, but she does have a point.

SAMUEL
I feel insulted. Is this really what I deserve? After I personally led the charge against the plague of devil spawn attacking our way of life, our connection with the Lord? You should be grateful to me, you are in my debt!

His hand briefly flashes that green grey colour of scaled flesh. The Doctor notices just before Samuel covers it up.

DOCTOR
Of course. Psychically enforced perception filter, bits of your true self leaking through, the more of it you show. Don't listen to him, he has deceived you all.

The crowd looks distressed, unable to choose who to side with.

SAMUEL
I have led you all to salvation, you will show me the respect I deserve!

As his face reddens with anger, it suddenly flashes with green. The crowd look, confused.

34 INT. COURTHOUSE - DAY
Zach and Daphne are staring through the cracks in the door..

ZACH
I think this is our moment, have you got it worked out yet?

DAPHNE
Yes, I think so. Now!

She stands up with the book, closing her eyes and letting out a deep breath.

35 INT. COURTROOM - DAY
Zach kicks down the doors, and everyone turns to face them. She raises her hands, moving them across the space in front of her in a ritualistic movement.

FRANK
Witch!

DAPHNE
Tu nisom roca leverale!

Her eyes shoot open, glowing in that lime green light. A shockwave bursts outs from her hands, towards the courtroom. It floods over Samuel, and his body twists and distorts. The crowd watch horrified as he transforms into a tall, horrific looking green scaled creature, with hoven cloves, elongated claws protruding from his hands, a pair of leathery wings upon his back, and curled black horns around his head. Everyone in the room screams and retreats away from him, except Zach, racing towards the stocks to free the Doctor, who observes his body.

DOCTOR
Judging by the physiognomy, the association with witchcraft, the psychic technology, I'm guessing a...Lucerian?

SAMUEL
She lies! This is an illusion, she is trying to deceive you all!

DOCTOR
I think you can drop the act completely now, no one here's going to listen to you anymore. What is all this then? An invasion? A game?

SAMUEL
An act of revenge. In my home time, the human empire advances into the stars, conquering worlds and claiming them as their own. I knew we could not stand and watch as they advanced towards our home planet, They would destroy us, condemn us as demons from their foolish mythology and beliefs. None of my other kind understood, but it was as the spirits commanded.

DOCTOR
Psychic connection with a higher plane of reality, your spirits don't understand what's truly happening, none of this will affect them. They're feeding off your psychic emanations, your hatred, your anger. Don't give into them!

SAMUEL
I've heard enough of your prattling. This is only a temporary halt to my plans. I will advance elsewhere, without Salem.

DOCTOR
And what is your plan? Take down the human race by turning them into witches?

SAMUEL
I do not need to take down the humans, they will do it themselves. Their greatest trait is their capacity for paranoia and self destruction. At this point in human evolution, their beliefs are so easily swayed and manipulated. Only last month were they close to their own destruction. I need only reignite that possibility. A select few to spark the fire that will engulf the human race. You may have turned Salem against me. But now I can use it as evidence. Show the world the true capabilities of the witches' evil and destruction.

He flicks his hand, and a ball of green flame manifests in his hand, which pulsates and grows.

SAMUEL
Salem will burn! And you will be powerless to stop me!

DAPHNE
You have burned enough, demon!

DOCTOR
Daphne, what are you doing?

DAPHNE
Holding him back, Doctor. Get everybody to safety, I will deal with this creature.

DOCTOR
Daphne, no. Your powers are unstable, you can't control them, you'll kill yourself!

DAPHNE
I would rather die than see the world torn apart by this thing! Take everybody and go! There's no other way.

The Doctor looks sad and angry, unable to let Daphne do this, but unable to think of another way.

DOCTOR
Everybody out! Get out now!

The crowd is only too happy to oblige, running out of every exit they can find, some through the windows. Samuel writhes and struggles in an invisible grip, the fireball still expanding in his palm. The Doctor watches as he tries to escape it.

ZACH
Daphne, please, you've suffered enough because of this, don't let it be the end of you!

DAPHNE
I must! Just go, before you get hurt.

DOCTOR
Sorry Daphne, but I think you don't know your own strength. The force you're holding him with, it's crushing him. I think you've left enough energy to keep him occupied.

DAPHNE
What do you…

The Doctor comes up behind her, and pinches her neck. Daphne's eyes close and she collapses unconscious. Zach catches her before she hits the floor.

ZACH
What did you do?

DOCTOR
Venusian neck hold, very powerful in strong pinches. I'll get the legs, you get the arms.

They both drag her out, as Samuel still struggles to be free.

SAMUEL
I will be free, Doctor! I will tear this world apart! And you will watch!

The fireball expands to engulf him, and he screams and the flames grow more intense.

36 EXT. TOWN SQUARE - DAY
The Doctor and Zach drag Daphne out as the crowd watches nervously. [Track 14 ends] Just as they get clear of the building, BOOM! An explosion of green flame bursts out from the building, engulfing it in fire. The crowd scream and shield themselves from the blast, as the Doctor and Zach fall to the floor. [Track 15: Don't] They pant, recovering from the sudden explosion.

DOCTOR
D'you know, I think that's the first time I've ever done what an angry mob has told me to.

ZACH
Yeah? And what's that?

The Doctor looks back at the wreckage of the courthouse.

DOCTOR
Burn the witch.

Zach rolls his eyes.

FADE TO:

37 INT. TARDIS
Daphne lies on the floor, as her eyes begin to flutter open from unconsciousness. She sits up, dazed.

DOCTOR
Ah, you're awake.

DAPHNE
What happened?

DOCTOR
You tried to sacrifice yourself to kill Samuel. But I've seen enough heroic sacrifices in my time, and, quite frankly, I couldn't be bothered to watch another one. Knocked you out and took you away before you could hurt yourself.

DAPHNE
What about Samuel?

ZACH
Don't worry, he's long gone. Along with his secret witch dungeon.

DOCTOR
I manipulated the spatial co-ordinates to fold in on itself, thus creating a vortex of-

ZACH
Why do you always do the technical explanation? Nobody understands you.

DOCTOR
Sorry. What I'm trying to say is, if I've done it properly, which I always do, your DNA should be free of the Lucerian strains. No more magic.

DAPHNE
I...I don't know what to say…

ZACH
You don't have to say anything. You were brave out there today, you were amazing. We couldn't have done it without you.

DOCTOR
And after a long talk with the judge, you should receive an official pardon.

DAPHNE
Thank you. Thank you so much.

DOCTOR
Nah, it was nothing. Glad we could help.

DAPHNE
What will you do now?

DOCTOR
We can't stick around for much longer. We tend to move around a lot. But you, on the other hand, can start your life again. Help to rebuild Salem. Keep making a difference.

DAPHNE
I will. If I can, without you there.

ZACH
You will do amazingly by yourself.

DAPHNE
If you're sure. Goodbye then, Doctor. Goodbye, Zach. Thank you for everything.

She turns and walks to the TARDIS door, leaving and it automatically shutting behind her.

DOCTOR
You know, I think she will.

ZACH
Will? Will what?

DOCTOR
Do amazingly. Something Samuel said. "Only last month were they close to their own destruction." If the date's right…

ZACH
Early 20th century… World War One?

DOCTOR
America joined in the fight in 1917, right until the end, and everyone did their piece. I think that rather helped.

ZACH
You're being mysterious on purpose. Helped what?

DOCTOR
Suffrage. On the 4th June, 1919, only 6 months in the future, the womens' right to vote was passed in America. Maybe, just maybe, Daphne saw the mistreatment of women, and joined in the fight. The protests, the legal disputes…

ZACH
What, you think Daphne got women the right to vote?

DOCTOR
Not her solely, but… maybe she did her small part. And if everyone plays a small role...

She smiles softly.

DOCTOR
Right then, shall we try again?

ZACH
Try what again?

DOCTOR
Salem. Aim for the right one this time.

ZACH
I think I'm done with Salem for the moment. Let's go somewhere nice. Somewhere peaceful. Somewhere…

DOCTOR
Boring?

ZACH
You know what, yeah. I think I could do with a bit of boring right now.

DOCTOR
All right then, if you're sure. Your wish is my command.

ZACH
Granting wishes, eh?

DOCTOR
Don't start. I am not a witch, and if someone else tries to tell me I am, I'll…

ZACH
What?

DOCTOR
Yeah, I could use a bit of boring too. Shall we?

Zach nods, and the Doctor smiles, pulling the main TARDIS lever, and taking off.

38 EXT. SALEM STREETS - DAY
Daphne wanders the streets, free - the people, safe, warm, for the first time in a long time, now that the season of the witches is over. [Track 15 ends]
