ROLL TITLES
1 EXT. SWAMPS – NIGHT
[Track 1: MI6 1:27 – 4:13] Mist seeps through the dark swamps, covered from the thick, groggy atmosphere by huge canopies of leaves, almost forming the sky itself by their size. Slimy vines hang low, swinging from side to side of the great branches of the trees of the swamp. A party of strange beasts – with bronze, rippled skin, shark-toothed scowl and bulging black eyes – scour the swamp, on two bulky, muscular legs and a stump tail poking out from a metal armour. The Hunters of Oxurn. They let out a bubbly hiss. In the distance, a grand tower stands alone, looming high over the swamps of Oxurn. At the centre, one of the creatures, obviously of high importance, stares out the window.
2 INT. CENTRAL TOWER – NIGHT
Yurek is stood in a high-tech facility, of immense power. The spherical room encased in a cold black atmosphere, with a deep whispering of beeping from the assortment of devices decorating the room. They hear a deep groaning, and turn around – the entrance slides open, and the Master strides in, confident and suave. He's grabbing Deisha by the arm, who's kicking and screaming.
MASTER
Now, now. We don't want to be making a fuss, do we? You've already lost, and you're mine.
YUREK
Master, you have returned… and what is this… creature?
MASTER
This… is my pet.
DEISHA
You what? Call me a pet again, I dare you. Go on!
MASTER
You have your dad's spirit, I'll give you that. Ooh, sorry! Sorry, had. I gotta get those tenses right.
DEISHA
Think you're funny, don't you? And you're right, my dad's tough. And so's my mum. And both of them will find me. And at that point, oh mate. You'll wish you never kidnapped me, sicko.
MASTER
Didn't you see what happened to them? Right now, they're plunging towards certain death.
YUREK
So it's ours?
MASTER
For now, yes. If you're lucky, you can hunt her. But I know the Doctor. There's always a chance she can escape. And if so, I need her as a hostage.
DEISHA
What about Uncle Adam?
MASTER
For now, he'll stay locked away. To play a good game, you tease your cards, but you never fully show them. Gotta keep the upper hand. Now, they can try and rescue you, but with Adam in a separate place, daddy'll have to choose. I wonder who he'll pick. His dead brother, or his abandoned daughter…
He broods.
3 EXT. SUPERNOVA
The TARDIS is hurtling unsteadily towards the supernova.
4 INT. TARDIS
The Doctor and Zach are strapped into the console using the belts that extend from underneath – but they're still being flung backwards, screaming.
ZACH
Alright, Doctor, you've had your fun, now GET US OUT OF HERE!
DOCTOR
I'm trying, the controls-! The Master's jammed the controls! Nothing's working!
ZACH
Well, fix her!
DOCTOR
I'm trying, don't yell at me!
ZACH
What am I supposed to do, rationally discuss over a spot of tea and a "scon"?!
DOCTOR
It's scone, not "scon"!
ZACH
Are you kidding me?!
DOCTOR
Two minutes until impact!
ZACH
I bloody hate you and your timers!
DOCTOR
You know, criticism is really helping!
ZACH
And "scone" isn't criticism? Can we not do this now?!
DOCTOR
Exactly my point! Aah!
She ducks as a stream of smoke shoots out above her from the time rotor.
DOCTOR
Come on, old girl, you can do this!
ZACH
Can she?!
DOCTOR
What did I just say?!
ZACH
Oh, my god.
DOCTOR
Hang on! The Master's got to be controlling it somehow, like a remote or something! I've just got to bypass whatever he's added in!
ZACH
Then do it!
DOCTOR
I've got to find it first!
ZACH
Hurry up!
The Doctor's eyes skate over the console, until she sees a new black box by Zach's left hand.
DOCTOR
Zach! The box!
Zach shifts his gaze downwards, then sees the box, forcibly trying to remove it with his hands.
ZACH
It… won't budge!
DOCTOR
That won't work.
ZACH
Oh, now she tells me!
DOCTOR
Sonic!
The Doctor chucks the sonic at Zach, but he misses it and it rolls onto the floor.
ZACH
Oh, come on!
He dives to the floor, being held back by the belt, reaching out as far as he can, until his fingers close around the sonic, and he lifts it up!
ZACH
Got it!
DOCTOR
Great, now point and think!
He points the sonic at the black box, and it whizzes away. It has no effect on it.
ZACH
Nothing's happening, why's nothing happening?
DOCTOR
Must be a deadlock seal! Plan B.
The Doctor types into the keyboard, and a tray slides out wielding a hammer. Zach picks up the hammer and smashes the box. The TARDIS suddenly lurches forward and the Doctor, once again, starts operating the controls, and the ship begins to dematerialise, settling back into the time vortex. The belts unlock and they fall back onto the floor. [Track 1 ends]
DOCTOR
Ah… all in a day's work. I always knew my archives would come in handy. Always hit the TARDIS with a hammer!
ZACH
All that crashing about, I hope Shona's okay.
DOCTOR
Security protocols should've kicked in, protected her.
ZACH
Oh, good.
[Track 2: The Lie 2:00 – 3:10]
DOCTOR
Maybe this can tell us a bit more about where the Master's gone.
ZACH
Who is he?
DOCTOR
Doesn't matter.
ZACH
He's got my daughter and my apparently alive brother, and you seemed very chummy with him, so I think it does matter, actually.
DOCTOR
You won't want to know.
ZACH
Just tell me the truth! For once.
DOCTOR
…An old friend.
ZACH
When you say friend, do you mean actual friend or another one of your enemies?
DOCTOR
Both.
ZACH
Not helpful.
DOCTOR
I told you, you won't like the answer I'm giving.
ZACH
Well, if you weren't so bloody cryptic all the time!
DOCTOR
Your wife is in the medbay, very injured. She needs help. I'll get us to where we need to be, you follow the systems and treat her.
ZACH
You're the Doctor, why don't you do it?
The Doctor starts advancing on Zach, goading him away from her towards the corridor.
DOCTOR
Because she is your wife and you can't fly the TARDIS. Now, if you don't mind, I've got to find the Master. Let me get on with my work.
She shuts the door as one shove throws him into the corridor.
DOCTOR
Humans!
She crouches down and picks up the shards of the box that are lain on the floor. She reads one, with some alien inscription bore into the glass.
DOCTOR
What are you up to this time?
She returns to the console. [Track 2 ends]
5 INT. CAVE – NIGHT
[Track 3: In Deeper Waters] There is a group of skinny, yellow beings, all holed up and huddled together in a damp cave. Strange, turquoise crystals hang from the ceiling like stalactites, dripping a viscous substance on their heads. Another creature stumbles in, puffing and slimy.
KUH-TOROV
Kuh-Seyh! But… where are the others?
Ke sniffles a little.
KUH-SEYH
I'm sorry, I couldn't…
KUH-TOROV
Where are they?
KUH-SEYH
There were too many of them, we couldn't cope. I thought I saw Wenn-
KUH-TOROV
Kuh-Wenn! Tell me it's Kuh-Wenn!
KUH-SEYH
Ke were ahead of me. If ke aren't here…
Kuh-Torov screams.
KUH-SEYH
The Predators were right behind me. We have to move-
KUH-TOROV
Shut up! Just shut up!
KUH-RENN
Kuh-Torov… Kuh-Seyh is right. If the Predators are moving on this territory – they were only going for the plantation collection! There's not much time.
KOLKA
No, there's not.
The Kuh all turn – the Hunters slink in, revealing their toothy grin. Children cuddle up to their parents, whimpering.
KOLKA
Sovereign… we've found a whole colony.
KUH-TOROV
Please! Not the children!
Kaso licks his lips with a black forked tongue contrasting against his yellow incisors, before he gives the order – all the Hunters leap onto the Kuh, savouring their meal – as they retreat, they notice that each Kuh has now been reduced to nothing but corpses – their flesh has been ripped off, exposing a yellow diamond bore into their large skulls. [Track 3 ends]
6 INT. CENTRAL TOWER – NIGHT
[Track 4: The Attack 0:37 – 1:37] The Master and Yurek have been watching from a bodycam, displaying images onto a screen. The former whoops and claps.
MASTER
Ah! Now that was a hunt! So elegant, so gripping. What did you think?
The Master turns to the corner, where Deisha is locked up in a small cage. She doesn't respond.
MASTER
Nothing to say? You prefer something a bit more gruesome? Can we access the archives? Just as a special treat for my little guest.
YUREK
I can hook something up.
A small light flashes on the controls, and a high pitched ding blinks. The Master whips himself around.
YUREK
That's your sensor, isn't it?
MASTER
No. No way.
He races to the terminal, opening up a map. He clicks his fingers, pointing to a point.
MASTER
There. Vector 6.
He kicks the cage and it topples over.
DEISHA
Ow!
MASTER
Don't talk.
YUREK
What's the problem?
MASTER
The Doctor is here. Now we'll get something really exciting. Set the dogs on 'em.
YUREK
…Dogs?
MASTER
Fool. There's your prey, GET THEM! But bring them back to me alive! Well, the Doctor anyway. The other one you can kill.
YUREK
On it right away, Master.
The Master comes in close to the cage, where he whispers to Deisha, sobbing silently.
MASTER
Your family got very lucky this time. But I assure you, once the Hunters catch their scent, I'll make sure you watch as they ravage Mummy and Daddy apart.
He hisses a laugh, before standing back up, straightening his jacket (and his posture), and swaggering away.
MASTER
How long until they get there?
YUREK
A number of minutes at most.
MASTER
Hurry it up.
He stares intensely at the monitor. [Track 4 ends]
7 EXT. SWAMPS – NIGHT
The TARDIS has materialised, stuck in the mud and very out of place.
8 INT. TARDIS
Zach and Shona both head into the console – wearing cleaner clothes now, presumably from the TARDIS wardrobe – joining the Doctor who's staring at the scanner.
DOCTOR
The planet Oxurn. Home to a number of different species, but the primary indigenous population are the Ozell, also known as the Oxurn Hunters. Predatory species. Mostly swamps, temperature dipping down to 1°c. No harmful weather patterns.
SHONA
That's where Deisha is?
DOCTOR
Shona, you're looking better.
SHONA
Ish.
DOCTOR
Deisha is somewhere nearby, couldn't get an exact fix because I wasn't tracing her, I was just following co-ordinates in the TARDIS databank. Never been to this system before, it's all brand new to me as well as you.
SHONA
Probably newer to me. You're saying, that's another planet outside?
DOCTOR
Yes. Exciting, isn't it?
ZACH
Typical you.
DOCTOR
What is?
ZACH
Having fun when there're lives at stake. My own daughter's.
DOCTOR
Trust me, we'll find her and we'll save her. You have my word. We escaped the trap, didn't we? And the supernova.
ZACH
And it feels like we're just heading into another dangerous situation.
DOCTOR
Fine, stay here if you want. I'll get her.
ZACH
Nah, I'm not letting you go do whatever you want. I don't care about what the local politics are, don't think about them, think about Deisha. Got it?
DOCTOR
Got it.
The Doctor flips the door switch, and she starts heading out. Zach follows, but notices when Shona is in his shadow.
9 EXT. SWAMPS – NIGHT
The Doctor exits the box, and takes in the atmosphere, listening to the cries of strange birds and the whisper of the winds. She realises that her boots are sinking into mud and grunts, trying to get to drier land.
10 INT. TARDIS
Zach stares at Shona.
ZACH
You can't come!
SHONA
Why, cos I'm a woman?
ZACH
No, don't be like that. You're still hurt.
SHONA
And there's a lunatic who could be doing worse to my daughter. This happened to her whilst she was under my care. Not yours, mine.
ZACH
I should've been there.
SHONA
She wasn't your responsibility at the time. She was mine. And she still is. I'm going, whether you like it or not. Nice to see you again.
She storms out of the TARDIS, grabbing the hammer and putting it in her pocket. Zach mutters under his breath.
ZACH
I hate it when she's like this…
He hurriedly rushes after her.
11 EXT. SWAMPS – NIGHT
[Track 5: No Ordinary Forrest] As Zach leaves the TARDIS, he sees the Doctor inspecting some grass samples and Shona trudging slowly over the mud. Immediately, he goes to help her across.
SHONA
"Another planet", you said. My first time, and what do I get? Mud! You're sure this isn't Wales?
DOCTOR
This planet's ecosystem is beautiful… So rich. Maybe, if we're not having to make a quick escape by the end of this, I can stop to take some samples. Beautiful.
ZACH
Yeah, and cold.
DOCTOR
Yet life still prospers! Doesn't that fascinate you?
ZACH
Not really. It's cold!
He fidgets, jumping and hugging himself to keep warm.
DOCTOR
Yeah, you mentioned.
SHONA
Take no notice. He's much worse at Christmas. I always wanna go on a walk on Christmas Eve, but nahhh, "it's too cold!"
The Doctor laughs a little.
ZACH
Can we focus?
DOCTOR
Shona, when he kidnapped you, did he ever take you here?
SHONA
N…no. Don't think so, no. I can't remember much, but I'm pretty sure he just kept us banged up somewhere, like your ship.
DOCTOR
So why did the Master come here?
ZACH
You're sure he is here? The TARDIS hasn't always been the most reliable.
DOCTOR
On the jammer the Master installed, there was some Oxurn scriptures.
ZACH
What did it say?
DOCTOR
…"Made on Oxurn."
ZACH
Right.
SHONA
So this is what you do? Stand outside your box for half an hour, chatting? Come on!
Shona starts heading off confidently in a random direction, then Zach and the Doctor catch up to her.
DOCTOR
You know where you're going?
SHONA
Nope. You?
DOCTOR
Not exactly.
SHONA
Then let's head this way.
ZACH
I don't think the best strategy is just wandering off randomly. Deisha and Adam could be the other way. And we could get lost.
Zach pauses a second.
ZACH
Did you see him? Adam?
SHONA
…No?
ZACH
Oh.
SHONA
He's alive?
ZACH
Apparently.
SHONA
Oh, my god. But… but how?
ZACH
That's what I'd like to know.
SHONA
After I sent the message, he… I can't remember, but the next thing I know, I was chained up in that small room, listening to the pair of you argue. It's fuzzy, stuff blends together.
ZACH
I'm sorry, we should've got to you sooner.
SHONA
You got there in the end, that's all that matters. Thank you.
Shona kisses Zach, and he reciprocates.
DOCTOR
From the concussion you had, seemed like a pretty big head trauma.
ZACH
No sh-
DOCTOR
Oi. Enough of the swearing, alright? I'm not sure if it's entirely appropriate you being here, Shona. You should be resting.
SHONA
Well I'm here now, so tough.
DOCTOR
You two are so perfect for each other.
A twig snaps, and the Doctor pauses, as do the couple a second later.
DOCTOR
Did you hear that?
ZACH
Hear what?
DOCTOR
Shh, shh.
ZACH
Don't ask a question then shush me!
DOCTOR
Seriously, quiet!
The trio fall silent, listening to the cold breeze brush up against the leaves, and the sound of a rushing stream nearby. [Track 5 ends]
They hear another twig snap, and the Doctor shoots her head round – a gang of Oxurn Hunters are eyeing them, sneaking, ready to pounce- AND THEY DO! [Track 6: Ram Saves The Day]
DOCTOR
Run!
Immediately, they sprint off, in hot pursuit by the Hunters. They bound over steep inclines and down banks, smashing through the stream and kicking water everywhere.
ZACH
Guess we found the indigenous population!
SHONA
How are they still right behind us?
DOCTOR
Sensitive smell, they're following our scent. Split up!
SHONA
What?!
ZACH
Just do it, we'll find each other!
Zach goes left, Shona goes right, whilst the Doctor keeps bolting dead ahead. She slows, turning around and seeing the Hunters.
DOCTOR
Hey! Over here!
The Hunters ignore the other scents and hone in on the Doctor, who turns back around and resumes sprinting away.
CUT TO:
Zach dives into a bed of brambles, wincing as he wriggles his way under like a mole, and then lying very still, letting the flora shroud him.
CUT TO:
Shona hides behind a tree, closing her eyes and holding her breath. Suddenly, a spindly yellow hand wraps itself around her mouth and she screams, muffled. [Track 6 ends]
KUH-SONN
Don't make any sound. Follow me if you want to live.
SHONA
Okay, proper alien… Is this a second abduction?
KUH-SONN
Are you coming or not?
SHONA
My husband's still out there.
KUH-SONN
They're dead, then. We must move.
SHONA
I can't leave him!
KUH-SONN
Then you will die too. This is your only chance.
Shona takes one last glance back at the swamp.
SHONA
Fine.
KUH-SONN
Remove this.
Ke tugs at her coat.
SHONA
What? But it's freezing!
KUH-SONN
It'll draw off the Predator's scents, we can escape.
SHONA
Ugh, this is so…
She takes off her coat, revealing a baggy grey jumper. Ke takes it and hurls it through the air, then runs in the other direction. She follows worriedly after kem.
CUT TO:
[Track 7: Long Story] The Doctor reaches a steep cliff edge, and she glances down below. She goes to slide down, but then hesitates, realising that it's too much of a drop. She turns back around, seeing the Hunters close in on her.
DOCTOR
Ah, well. It's been a good innings. Not exactly the way I thought I'd be going out. No chance of a last meal?
She gulps.
12 INT. CENTRAL TOWER – NIGHT
The Master watches the Hunters get ready to launch themselves on the Doctor.
MASTER
Stop. I said keep her alive.
YUREK
What?
MASTER
Stop them. STOP THEM!
Yurek jumps, and barks a command into the comms.
13 EXT. SWAMPS – NIGHT
The Hunters stop, bowing down and waiting for orders.
DOCTOR
Eh? What are you waiting for?
One of the creatures chucks its speaker, once holstered on its belt, now at the Doctor's feet. She picks it up.
MASTER (oc)
Doctor…
DOCTOR
Master. Decided to take pity on me?
MASTER (oc)
It's not pity.
DOCTOR
No? One minute you're hurtling me into a supernova, the next you're sparing my life?
MASTER (oc)
You're going to follow the Hunters, and then we're going to have a proper chat. Face to face.
DOCTOR
At last, I thought you'd never ask.
MASTER (oc)
You're going to want to hurry up, or Deisha's going to pay the consequences.
DOCTOR
I'll come. On one condition. As soon as I arrive, you let her go.
MASTER (oc)
You don't have a choice.
DOCTOR
You don't think I can escape?
MASTER (oc)
Very well. You have my word. I'll see you soon.
The Doctor is escorted away by the Hunters. [Track 7 ends]
14 INT. CENTRAL TOWER – NIGHT
[Track 8: Femi] The Master opens Deisha's cage, and she crawls out. He stares down at her, with a piercing glance.
MASTER
You're coming with me.
15 EXT. WATERFALL – NIGHT
Dirty water streams down and falls off a crevice, gushing down and creating a huge wall of water, still surrounded by the grungy atmosphere of the swamps that Kuh-Sonn and Shona navigate through.
SHONA
Where the hell are we?
KUH-SONN
Our home.
SHONA
…Our?
Kuh-Sonn darts through the water, and hesitantly she follows.
16 INT. CAVERN – NIGHT
Shona shakes the water off, disgusted. She follows Kuh-Sonn into a dimly light, cosy cave, with small torches and small animal hides being used for bedding.
SHONA
Ugh, gross. I'm cold and I'm sopping wet. I bet Zach didn't have to deal with this. Speaking of, any chance we can find him?
KUH-SONN
I told you, this… Zach is dead.
SHONA
He can't be. What were those… monsters?
KUH-SONN
The Predators.
SHONA
The Predators? Did you just say the Predators?
Shona and Kuh-Sonn arrive at a family of Kuh, all shivering. Upon seeing Shona, they all back away, terrified.
KUH-SONN
Do not be afraid.
KUH-FERA
You're with the Predators!
SHONA
What? No, I'm not. I nearly got killed by one!
KUH-SONN
I believe you are being mistaken for a creature of your species. Forgive us, but you all look alike.
SHONA
Do you mean Deisha? Have you seen my daughter?
KUH-SONN
Daughter? I don't know this.
SHONA
My little girl.
KUH-SONN
Nope, you've lost us.
SHONA
Girl? You don't have gender?
KUH-SONN
We do.
SHONA
Just not human gender? Okay… So, what are your pronouns?
KUH-SONN
Uh… Ke/Kem.
SHONA
Sure. Hang on, if you don't mean Deisha… The Master?
They all recoil at that name.
SHONA
The Master kidnapped me, my child. Maybe even my brother-in-law. I have to find him.
KUH-SONN
They work with the Predators. They have regularly partaken in hunts, but spends most of the time on their own territory.
SHONA
Where is that?
KUH-SONN
…I-
SHONA
Come on, chop chop! I gotta go there.
KUH-SONN
I don't think that's a good idea.
SHONA
Well, I'll be honest – don't really care about what you think. Thanks for saving me, but my family's out there and I've gotta find them, because they'd be screwed without me.
[Track 8 ends] Shona starts back towards the waterfall, but sees the Hunters patrolling at the bed. [Track 9: Living on a Calorific Knife Edge 1:31 – 3:11]
SHONA
Oh, god. Predators.
KUH-SONN
Get out the way! Don't let them see you. They're after us, their main food source is a gem in our brains.
SHONA
Is there another way out of here?
KUH-SONN
No. We don't need one, the waterfall hides our scent.
SHONA
Well, where do I go now?!
KUH-SONN
Nowhere. You stay here.
SHONA
Screw that. Why do you even want me here?!
KUH-SONN
We know what it's like to be hunted by them. There's no escape.
SHONA
I can't just leave my husband out there! Please, help me.
KUH-SONN
I can't. You are asking me to risk my family's safety. I can't do that.
SHONA
Neither can I, and that's why I need to go! As a parent, you must see that, please!
KUH-SONN
No!
SHONA
Fine.
She runs back out to the waterfall, staring up at the cliff.
KUH-SONN
What are you doing?
SHONA
If you want something doing…
She tries to climb up the wall, but the dirt crumbles away and she falls back down rather quickly. Grunting, she tries again. The Hunters call out, noticing Shona. She sees a wooden branch hanging out from the cliff, and grabs onto that, pulling herself up, before grabbing onto an outcrop of rock.
SHONA
Uh oh… Looks like they're catching on.
KUH-SONN
What have you done?
SHONA
Looks like you need to come too, move it!
KUH-SONN
Ah…
The family all rush after Shona, climbing up the cliff. The Hunters arrive at the bottom, heading up after them.
SHONA
Come… on!
One of the Hunters snatches Kuh-Fera's legs and drag kem away.
KUH-SONN
No! Kuh-Fera!
KUH-SULE
Keep moving, Kuh-Sonn!
KUH-SONN
Not my Fera!
Kuh-Sonn kicks one of the Hunters back down, but the other Hunter bites into kir leg, losing kir footing and joining the one ke just attacked. The final Kuh loses kir grip and the entire family are taken away by the Hunters.
SHONA
Sorry, I'm so sorry, I' m so sorry!
Shona gets close, reaching her hand out to climb over to the top of the cliff, but it's just too far. She struggles, but she too slips and falls. She screams loudly, but suddenly hits a vine and grabs it, shocked at her survival. She swings across, sliding down until she reaches the bottom. She glances up at the Hunters, who are jumping down and heading towards her, and she sprints off. [Track 9 ends]
17 EXT. SWAMPS - NIGHT
She hides behind a bush, panting. She throws up, spluttering, thinking back to the murder she just witnessed.
SHONA
My god… It was all my fault… All my fault!
She lets out an ugly sob. Suddenly a hand grabs her and she screams.
ZACH
Shona! It's me.
She sighs.
SHONA
Will everyone stop doing that?!
ZACH
What's wrong?
She buries herself in Zach's arms.
SHONA
I killed them… I killed them all!
CUT TO:
[Track 10: Something Different] Shona's eyes have dried out, and she's resting her head on Zach's shoulder.
SHONA
They… They saved me, and I betrayed them.
ZACH
They were going to be caught anyway. This place, it's… it's like a hunting ground. They're everywhere.
SHONA
That doesn't make me feel better. They were a family, like us. They had a life, and because of me, it's over. How can you be okay with this?
ZACH
Travelling with the Doctor, you see all sorts of things.
SHONA
So that makes death okay?
ZACH
Of course not!
SHONA
The Zach I knew wouldn't disregard it.
ZACH
Well, I've changed a lot.
SHONA
I can tell. How long has it been for you? I don't recognise you anymore.
ZACH
Wasn't that the point? I wasn't myself before, seeing all these new places…
SHONA
To make you better, not to make you impassionate.
ZACH
I- What do you want me to say?
SHONA
Be the man I fell in love with.
ZACH
I am! I'm sorry that you saw that, but listen to me. There's a time to mourn, and there's a time to fight. Our daughter is still out there, and god knows what is happening to her. This is a battlefield, and we're going to see some horrors, but we can face those horrors at home, and we can get help for them. But right now, we've got to continue and save Deisha. Okay? Everything's going to be okay, I promise.
He hugs her tightly.
SHONA
Okay… They said that the Master is working with those… aliens. I'm betting that's where Deisha is. I wish I would wake up now.
ZACH
That'd be nice, but 'fraid this ain't a dream.
SHONA
I was worried you'd say something like that.
She chokes again, and Zach stares into her eyes. [Track 10 ends]
ZACH
Hey. Be strong for me, please? I know you can do it.
SHONA
Yeah.
She gives a weak smile.
18 INT. CENTRAL TOWER – NIGHT
[Track 11: My Penance 0:14 – 2:13] The Master is alone, staring out the window into the foggy swamps of Oxurn. The night is beginning to pass, but he knows that the daytime is no more dangerous than the darkness. The doors open, and the Doctor steps in.
MASTER
You took your time. But you're here at last.
DOCTOR
Sorry to mess up your plans.
He spins around, throwing himself towards her as an act of intimidation – but she doesn't move.
MASTER
It was exactly as I planned!
She stares up to him, unfazed by his fearmongering.
DOCTOR
Where's Deisha?
MASTER
I did as you asked. She's been set free.
DOCTOR
What, already? She's out there?
MASTER
Just as you asked.
He giggles, and the Doctor turns on her heel, running out the door, but stops as the Master yells.
MASTER
Doctor! Take one more step, and I will order every Hunter in this place AFTER YOU!
She freezes, turning back to face him.
MASTER
Good girl.
DOCTOR
What do you want? What are you doing here, and why did you kidnap Zach's family?
MASTER
…To make you suffer. Ah, you see this world, Doctor? A perfect representation of good old mother nature! Survival of the fittest! Predator versus prey. The Ozell are ambassadors, if you like. The archetypes for my big plan. See, I've been doing my research.
DOCTOR
Do we need the monologue? Is that why you called me here?
MASTER
No, I called you here because I thought that death by Ozell wasn't good enough. I want to make you feel MY pain! Not theirs! The greatest predators this side of the galaxy, and they're my lackies. How does that make you feel?
DOCTOR
Unlike you, I'm not jealous of your achievements. I don't have a superiority complex like you.
MASTER
That's the thing. You do.
DOCTOR
What about Adam Ellis? Where does he factor into it?
MASTER
You're not listening! All of this, all of it! Deisha, Adam, the Ozell, everything, all to torture you!
DOCTOR
Why?
MASTER
Because you lose. All your enemies, they give these great big speeches, but there's none of that here. I'm not telling you what I'm doing, and you can't work out a way to defeat me.
DOCTOR
I'll find out somehow.
He shakes his head.
MASTER
Nah. You don't understand the stakes here. And that… will be your downfall.
He gets in close, letting out a smooth, silky whisper.
MASTER
Any last words?
DOCTOR
Last words before what?
MASTER
The beginning of the end. Oh, you can't believe how long I've been waiting for this! So much planning! Oh, yes!
DOCTOR
All this, and you're not even going to explain? That must be eating you up inside.
The Master stares at the Doctor, but then glances away, almost ashamed of the truth. [Track 11 ends]
19 EXT. SWAMPS – DAWN
They trudge along the swamps, gasping and groaning.
SHONA
Ugh, this muck…!
Zach stops, frowning. He takes a step back, then tries walking forward again, freezing in the same place.
SHONA
What's wrong?
ZACH
I can't… I can't move forward!
SHONA
What do you mean?
ZACH
Look, try and walk there!
Shona attempts to step in front of Zach, but too stops moving.
ZACH
Force field or something. But what does that mean? We're getting close? Or… there's something there we can't see?
SHONA
Whatever it is, we should try going around it.
ZACH
It could be important.
SHONA
There's nothing we can do about it now, is there? So come on.
Shona and Zach turn left and start moving in parallel with the strange force.
20 INT. CENTRAL TOWER – DAWN
[Track 12: The Incredible Shrinking Device] The Doctor is chained up to the wall, eyeing the sonic screwdriver, out of reach and on the floor, and the Master is working at the console. Yurek crawls in.
YUREK
Master, I believe we are nearly ready.
MASTER
Ah, excellent! Excellent!
DOCTOR
Ready for what?
MASTER
Don't tell her.
DOCTOR
It's not like I can escape!
MASTER
You always do, though. Escaped my little chicken run, escaped that supernova, escaped the hunts-
DOCTOR
That last one was because of you.
MASTER
Because I knew you'd escape somehow. And now I stopped that, and I can hurt you.
DOCTOR
And how's that?
MASTER
I'm so glad you asked!
The Hunters escort groups of Kuh into the room, including the family Shona met.
MASTER
Meet the prey. Now, normally the Hunters would just eat them, and there's a small crystalline remnant in the skull, that's what the Ozell feed on, but… Tonight, after you were brought to me, an order was sent out. Capture the Kuh, rather than kill.
DOCTOR
Why would you be merciful?
MASTER
Oh, this isn't mercy. They're going to die anyway; I'm just giving you the option to choose how.
DOCTOR
What?
MASTER
You give the order. Set the Hunters on them, let them feast – and they're ravenous – or, I play with my toy.
He takes out his TCE.
DOCTOR
And if I refuse to make the choice?
MASTER
Then they'll suffer a fate much worse than death. You don't want to know what that'll be.
DOCTOR
Don't I?
MASTER
What'll it be, Doctor?
DOCTOR
I'm not doing this.
MASTER
One last chance, choose.
DOCTOR
No.
MASTER
Choose!
DOCTOR
No!
MASTER
Fine. The child.
Kuh-Fera is hauled away by one of the Hunters. The Doctor stares on, helpless, trying to break free. The Kuh yell at them.
KUH-FERA
NO! No, get off me!
KUH-SONN
Please, don't hurt kem!
DOCTOR
You don't have anything against them, leave them alone!
MASTER
Then choose!
YUREK
Master, these methods, they're- they're very unconventional.
MASTER
You shut it.
YUREK
Yes, of course.
KUH-SONN
Let kem go! Let kem go, you sick monsters!
Kuh-Sonn races towards the door, but the Hunters smack kem, and ke falls to the floor.
DOCTOR
Stop this tyranny!
MASTER
This stops… when you choose.
DOCTOR
Why are you doing this?
MASTER
To show you the power I have. I rule. Not you. ME. This is just the start. Soon, this sort of torture will be all over the galaxy.
Screams echo down the hallway, and Kuh-Sonn bursts into tears.
MASTER
This is on you, Doctor. Do you want to change your mind? Make a choice? Or shall we go slowly through this line-up? I've got all day.
Kuh-Sonn is picked up, and shoved back into the line. She stares at kem, glancing down at the TCE and up to her chains. It takes kem a while, but ke soon understands what she is trying to communicate.
MASTER
Well?
Her face falls, and she murmurs.
DOCTOR
TCE.
MASTER
What was that?
DOCTOR
TCE.
MASTER
What do you want me to do with it? Tell me.
DOCTOR
…Kill them with the TCE.
MASTER
Oh, if you really want me to.
He laughs, tasting those words and savouring them.
MASTER
Thank you! Now, was that so hard? …Didn't think so. Which one will I go for? The one who tried to escape? Nah, I'll prolong that fear. How about… you?
The Master points the TCE at a shorter Kuh, whimpering.
MASTER
Say goodbye.
The Master fires a bolt – at the same time, Kuh-Sonn kicks the TCE and it flies through the air – the bolt hits the chains and they shrink – One of the Doctor's arms is free! She reaches down and picks up the sonic, using it on the other, and she bolts across the room.
MASTER
Doctor!
She starts slamming controls, and alarms blare, the lights going haywire. The Kuh take this chance, speeding out of the room, the Doctor in hot pursuit. The Master picks up his TCE.
MASTER
What are you waiting for?! AFTER THEM!
The Hunters barrel out in to the corridor, and the Master, dribbling, storms after them.
21 INT. CENTRAL TOWER CORRIDOR – DAWN
The Doctor and the Kuh – now having rescued Kuh-Fera - head towards the lift. The Hunters stampede towards them.
DOCTOR
Everyone inside!
They all shuffle into the lift, being very cramped for space.
DOCTOR
See ya!
The lift door closes just before the Hunters reach them, smashing into it.
22 EXT. CENTRAL TOWER ENTRANCE – DAWN
They all sprint out, and the Doctor sonics the door shut. [Track 12 ends]
DOCTOR
Go on, get out of here!
KUH-SONN
Thank you. Thank you so much.
DOCTOR
That was all up to you- Wait, hang on. What was that?
[Track 13: The Division] She takes the sonic back out.
KUH-SONN
What was what?
DOCTOR
The sonic registered something… wrong.
She scans the door. She hears the Master shouting orders from the other side.
DOCTOR
What are you still doing here? Go! Ah! Extra-terrestrial. Not from Oxurn… Gallifrey? No… I need to get back to the TARDIS. Thanks again, good luck!
The Doctor sprints off into the swamp, and Kuh-Sonn starts after her.
KUH-SULE
Kuh-Sonn!
KUH-SONN
Go home. I will find you, don't worry.
They press their heads together.
KUH-SONN
We'll find each other. Now go!
Ke runs off, and Kuh-Sonn hurries after the Doctor.
23 EXT. SWAMPS – DAWN
The Doctor and Kuh-Sonn race through the swamps.
DOCTOR
What are you doing here?
KUH-SONN
I- I wanted to help you after saving my child.
DOCTOR
I don't need your help, but thanks anyway!
The Doctor and Kuh-Sonn speed past Zach and Shona.
DOCTOR
Oi, you two! This way!
Zach and Shona share a look, then follow after her.
25 EXT. CENTRAL TOWER ENTRANCE – DAWN
The Master steps out, look around.
MASTER
Doctor… DOCTOR!
He looks to the Hunters.
MASTER
Vector 6. Get to her TARDIS now!
They scurry off into the swamps, leaving him fuming.
YUREK
Master, please. All this, it's not healthy-
MASTER
You don't tell me what to do.
YUREK
I'm just saying-
MASTER
One more word out of you, and we won't be equal partners anymore.
He points the TCE at Yurek's forehead.
MASTER
Got it?
YUREK
Ye-
He stops speaking, and nods.
MASTER
Good. Hunt them down, and report to me when you have!
Yurek gulps, and speeds back inside. The Master scans his environment.
MASTER
I'll find you. I'll… find you.
He breathes heavily, then turns back, heading into the tower after Yurek. [Track 13 ends]
26 EXT. SWAMPS – DAWN
[Track 14: First Steps 0:07 – 1:13] The Doctor, Zach, Shona and Kuh-Sonn reach the TARDIS.
SHONA
Wait… You're… you're alive!
KUH-SONN
Just about. Hello, again.
SHONA
Thank god… What happened before, I'm… I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to-
KUH-SONN
It's fine, I understand.
ZACH
Woah- what are we doing here? Where's Deisha?
DOCTOR
Out here. Somewhere in the swamps.
SHONA
What?! But… those monsters-!
DOCTOR
Yes, I know. One thing at a time. The sonic picked up something new, and I think it's linked to something the Master said.
ZACH
You talked to him? Did you see Adam?
DOCTOR
Not yet, I'm sorry. But I'm hoping that wherever this takes me, might give us a clue to why he's here.
SHONA
Well, I have to stay here, I have to find her.
DOCTOR
I don't think that's-
SHONA
You button it.
KUH-SONN
I shall assist you.
SHONA
Really? After-
KUH-SONN
I have a child of my own. I know how scared you must be for their life, and I know the lengths you'll go to so you can find them.
DOCTOR
Zach, what about you?
ZACH
…I don't know. You really think that you might find Adam?
DOCTOR
I don't know. It's a possibility.
ZACH
Uh… I don't… I don't know.
DOCTOR
I need to go now. Yes or no?
Zach looks over to Shona.
ZACH
My daughter's out there. I've lost my brother before… I can't lose her.
Shona holds his hand.
DOCTOR
Okay. Be careful.
ZACH
You too.
She smirks.
DOCTOR
Never.
She rushes into the police box, and slams the door behind her. [Track 14 ends]
ZACH
Yeah.
27 INT. TARDIS – DAWN
The Doctor runs from the door straight to the console.
DOCTOR
Alright, next stop…!
She stops and looks around.
DOCTOR
What is next?
[Track 15: Humans Returns] The Doctor sighs, but then shakes it off, plugging the sonic in and throwing forward the lever.
28 EXT. SWAMPS - DAWN
The TARDIS dematerialises before Zach, Shona and Kuh-Sonn, the latter of which is blown away.
KUH-SONN
What the-?! That's… Oh, my god.
Shona gives Zach a kiss on the lips.
SHONA
Together, then?
ZACH
Just like old times.
SHONA
Not exactly.
And the pair share a warm glance.
29 INT. TARDIS
The Doctor flicks the switch and checks the scanner.
DOCTOR
Somewhere… above orbit? Vast trails of… Ooh, hello. What is that, Doctor? Yes, good question, Doctor. See, who needs a companion? I ask myself all the questions, and who answers them? Me.
She turns the dial next to the scanner, and narrows her eyes.
DOCTOR
Z'uron energy. Found in carrier starliners. Moving across this system like a web towards one focal point. What was the Master moving? And… where? Well, to answer that question, we'll have to go there, won't we, Doctor?
She pilots the TARDIS, but it judders and she's thrown to the floor. Something beeps loudly.
DOCTOR
Agh, what now?!
She reads the monitor, and sees a diagram of the TARDIS, being encased in a field of light.
DOCTOR
A time trap? Used by the Time Lords to bounce TARDISes off certain points in space-time. Well, now I definitely know that the Master's hiding something.
The time rotor hisses and she dodges a stream of smoke billowing out.
DOCTOR
Aah! He's rigged it so I'm bouncing between two timezones! Question is, can I break free?
She grins. [Track 15 ends]
DOCTOR
Watch me.
30 INT. CENTRAL TOWER – DAWN
Something flashes on the console behind the Master, letting out a shrill whine. He takes a deep breath.
YUREK
Master… what is that?
MASTER
The Doctor's left the planet. She's fallen into another one of my traps. What is the progress on the transport?
YUREK
We have nearly finished the safety checks.
MASTER
We don't have time, skip them. The Doctor's on her way, tell the Hunters to finish up their missions, bring in as much produce as they can, and begin boarding. Our plan advances.
Yurek bows.
31 INT. TARDIS
The Doctor throws one final lever, and the TARDIS comes crashing to a halt, with sparks flying everywhere, sporadically. The Doctor groans, but quickly recovers.
DOCTOR
Come on, then. Where're we now?
[Track 16: Seeking Trinity Crescent] She jumps up and races out the door.
32 INT. STORAGE HOLD
The TARDIS is parked, its lights flickering, within a dark storage hold – there are hundreds of crates stacked up against black, steel walls, with exposed framework creating arches every ten metres or so. The Doctor steps out, warily taking in her surroundings.
DOCTOR
You do love your cupboards, don't you? Or storage holds, or closets… Almost like you're trying to tell me something.
She steps towards a crate, and lifts it up. She picks up a magnetic, spherical object.
DOCTOR
Shield oscillators. Not Oxurn-made, I reckon. No, feels more compact than that. Fizzing with energy. I can feel it emanating… Almost Vivyrin-like. Travelled a long way. I was right, you've got strings all over the galaxy.
She glances around.
DOCTOR
Well, this is all well and good, but for once I think I'm done with the monologuing for now. Should we find someone in charge, Doctor? Oh, yes please, Doctor.
She heads towards a door.
DOCTOR
No point in showing off if there's no-one to show off to.
She slinks through into a corridor, much of the same architecture, and wanders off in a random direction.
33 EXT. SWAMPS – DAY
The day is not much brighter than the night – A murky, dark sun, barely illuminates the dark, cloudy sky, and everyone is still consumed by the fog. Zach, Shona and Kuh-Sonn are submerged in a muddy lake, shivering.
SHONA
Brr… No chance of a towel?
KUH-SONN (whispering)
Keep it down!
Kuh-Sonn gestures subtly towards a pack of Hunters, weaving their way through the trees, their tails excitedly swishing from left to right, as they crouch down, ready their legs, and pounce! A family of Kuh are ambushed, tackled to the ground, the Hunters slathering all over kem. Kuh-Sonn tries to get up, but Zach throws him back, causing a huge splash – Thankfully, the screams of the family's struggle drown out the noise of Zach's and Kuh-Sonn's.
ZACH (whispering)
Wait. There's no way you can take all of them on your own!
KUH-SONN (whispering)
I've got to try. Those are my-
SHONA (whispering)
Will you two shut up and look?
KUH-SONN (whispering)
I'd rather not see my friends get mauled.
SHONA (whispering)
They're not though – look!
The trio watch as the Kuh family is dragged away, kicking and screaming through the swamps.
ZACH (whispering)
That's a relief, at least.
KUH-SONN (whispering)
You wouldn't think so if you'd seen what they do to the captured. They never capture, they're working on someone else's orders, torturing kem, on the orders of someone who happens to look exactly like you.
ZACH
We're not with him!
This was a little too loud, and Zach realises this. They all dive into the water as one of the Hunters approaches the lake. They sniff, and glance down at the mud.
KOLKA
…Footprints. Some Kuh, some… not.
That wide smirk returns to his face. The sound of a twig snaps in the distance, pricking his ears, and he bounds off, like a dog chasing a toy. They quickly bob up to the surface, Shona spluttering water.
SHONA
I inhaled a bit. I inhaled a bit. That's rank…
Zach ignores Shona though, staring Kuh-Sonn down.
ZACH
We are not with the Master. He might look like us, he might sound like us, but he is not one of us. Just because you had a bad experience with someone who happens to be similar to us, does not mean you get to stereotype. He's not even the same species, I don't think. We might look similar in some aspects, but we are not the same.
KUH-SONN
And that's why he managed to take your daughter away from you? Where were you then?
Zach grimaces.
KUH-SONN
You should've been protecting her, like I was.
ZACH
You're not now, are you? Why aren't you with your children now?
KUH-SONN
…My-
ZACH
-partner will handle it?
KUH-SONN
-partner will handle… it.
ZACH
Yeah. That's what I said. And now we're in this position.
Kuh-Sonn's face falls.
ZACH
Deisha's our daughter. Kuh-Fera is yours. Thank you for everything you've done, but it's up to us now. Our responsibility.
Ke nods, and climbs out of the lake. Shona glares at him.
ZACH
What?
SHONA
What do you think?
ZACH
I dunno.
SHONA
Oh, come off it, Zach. You're not a knight in shining armour, you never have been.
ZACH
Well, maybe I should be.
SHONA
I'm all for you getting involved with family life again, you know that. But don't you for a second think that I need protecting.
[Track 16 ends] Zach nods guiltily. Suddenly, there is a scream, and the pair turn around. [Track 17: Corakinus Lives] Kuh-Sonn is pinned to the ground by one of the hunters.
KOLKA
You're lucky that you're being spared. For now. Move!
Kolka grabs Kuh-Sonn and throws kem to his feet, shoving kem. Instantly, ke retaliates, smacking him across the face. Kolka snarls, saliva dribbling down his face.
KOLKA
…Well, then. Perhaps we've got enough for tonight!
With one slash, Kuh-Sonn collapses to the ground, disintegrating into ash, leaving just the small yellow crystal on top.
SHONA
Noooo!
Shona launches out of the water, charging towards Kolka, but they instantly react, grabbing Shona and forcing her back.
ZACH
Hey!
Zach does the same, picking up a log and going to whack Kolka over the head, but once again, the human is easily bested by the Hunter. Kolka towers over Zach.
KOLKA
You're not the one we're looking for. That means I get to revel in your death-!
There is a loud thump, and Kolka suddenly keels over onto the floor. Shona appears behind him, with the hammer that she took from the TARDIS. Zach sits up.
SHONA
See?
ZACH
Okay. I'm convinced.
Shona puts the hammer back in her pocket, rushing over to Sonn's ashes.
SHONA
I'm sorry. I'm sorry, I'm sorry. Oh, god.
ZACH
Come on. We need to… We need to get going.
SHONA
Wait.
Shona picks up the crystal and hands it over to Zach, which he pockets.
SHONA
Kuh-Sonn told me that the Hunters feed on these. We can't just leave it behind.
ZACH
Okay… Okay.
SHONA
I'm sorry, Kuh-Sonn.
DERILL
Actually, it's just Sonn.
Zach and Shona spin around – they are surrounded by Hunters.
DERILL
They lose their title upon death – a sign of respect for those who survive us.
SHONA
Oh, god.
ZACH
You've been rounding the natives up within a matter of a few hours, when you used to kill kem. You've been following kem for ages… You're toying with kem, aren't you?
DERILL
It'd be… boring if we took kem straight away.
ZACH
You know every inch of this swamp. Deisha Ellis. Where is she?
DERILL
…There is no… Deisha Ellis here.
ZACH
There is. There has to be. The Doctor said-
DERILL
There is another.
ZACH
What?
DERILL
Adam Ellis.
ZACH
Adam? He's here? Wh-Where?
DERILL
It is a shame you will never get to find out.
Derill raises their arm. Shona winces.
ZACH
No- Hey- hey! Wherever Adam is, you can take us. We can all go out together!
DERILL
We don't take orders from meat. Besides, I don't think Adam will be… "going out" any time soon.
ZACH
What do you mean? What have you done to him?!
SHONA
Please. Just… let us see him. One last time.
Derill growls, looking at the other hunters.
DERILL
No.
Derill's radio crackles. [Track 17 ends]
MASTER (oc)
Stop! I told you to report when you found the humans!
DERILL
But… the Doctor's not-
MASTER (oc)
Take them to Adam. I have my own plans for them.
DERILL
…Yes, Master.
Derill curses, grabbing Zach and Shona, and huffing as he tugs them across.
DERILL
Wake that piece of filth up!
He glances at Kolka.
34 INT. STATION HUB
[Track 18: That Was A Mistake] The Doctor is crawling through a small circular vent – Like a tube, sewer-like, with cables pumping through the ceiling. She comes towards a hatch, and squints through the bars.
DOCTOR
What's through here, then?
She glances down to a vast chasm – Obviously the centre of this structure – a ship, presumably, with engines roaring at the very bottom. There are lots of passageways towards a large spire, in which an assembly line is being formed from people – of many different species, some human, some not – but the one uniting factor is, they all look shattered as they carry crates of weapons towards the spire.
DOCTOR
Basic labour force. That's what the Master's been transporting - Slaves! From across the Universe. Preparing weapons, fuelling an empire. He's built an army. It's a war station! How's he managed this?
The Doctor sees a commotion on one of the bridges. One familiar, young girl is stumbling along the bridge.
DEISHA
Alright, you lot! You know what? I've had enough of this!
Deisha holds up one of the crates, suspending it over the edge down towards the chasm. A few others follow suit. Some of the Oxurn Hunters approach her.
DEISHA
Uh- uh! Don't you move.
The Doctor smirks.
DOCTOR
That's our girl.
DEISHA
One more step, and this goes over, alright?
The Hunters back away.
DEISHA
Good boys. Now, here's the deal. You know me, don't you?
XAS
Yes.
DEISHA
Deisha Ellis. Nephew of Adam Ellis. I know he's with the Master, and he's in charge of you. So! I've had a very long day. I've been pushed about by you lot, forced to carry your "stock" and I'm done! I just want to go to sleep. But that ain't happening, so you're gonna do as I say, or this all goes over. Cos me? Done! Got it?
XAS
I don't think so, sweetheart.
DEISHA
Don't think I'm serious?
She picks up a laser gun, and tosses it over the edge. It tumbles down the sides before burning in the flames of the engine.
DEISHA
You don't mess with an Ellis. Got it? Now… you're gonna let us all go.
XAS
Nah. We're the ones in charge.
DEISHA
And why is that?! Huh?! All of you! Why'd you let them hurt you?!
SLAVE (oc)
Just get on with the work!
Cries and murmurs echo around the chasm, and Deisha frowns, exasperated.
DEISHA
The hell've you done to them? You brainwashed 'em or something?
XAS
They embrace us.
DEISHA
Well, I ain't.
XAS
Yes… that is strange…
DEISHA
So what's different about me, huh?
XAS
You must be reconditioned.
DEISHA
You what? Hey-!
Xas launches herself at Deisha, pinning her to the ground – Simutaneously, her tail whacks the crate as it starts to topple over the bridge, forcing it back onto the floor. Some guns spill out, but the other Hunters quickly clean it up.
DEISHA
No! Agh!
Xas grabs Deisha and drags her away, trying to wriggle free.
DEISHA
You're all being tricked! All of you!
A tannoy whines, and a booming voice calls out across the station.
TANNOY (oc)
Shuttle OX-1 is preparing for launch. Our Lord and Master is coming to join us!
SLAVES
Long live the Master! Long live the Master!
Immediately, they resume work, as if nothing had happened. The Doctor stares in utter confusion, then slight realisation.
DOCTOR
I think I've seen this before…
She sneaks back through the tube, down a different path she went previously. [Track 18 ends]
35 EXT. SWAMPS - DAY
[Track 19: Should They Be Born?] Zach and Shona are escorted by the Hunters – as are hundreds of Kuhs, all being herded like cattle towards a towering, grand rocket, which shimmers into existence right before their eyes, disorienting them slightly.
ZACH
Hey… This is where we were earlier, remember? Must've been an invisible perception filter or something like that. Like the TARDIS, I think.
SHONA
Oh, of course.
ZACH
No…
Zach stops dead in his tracks, as he looks up to the rocket, seeing a man stand beside the large entrance in which the Kuh are flooding into. He's visibly older, with flecks of grey within his beard, and a long, harsh scar stretching down his cheek, but he's instantly recognisable.
ZACH
Adam… Adam? ADAM!
Adam Ellis turns from the entrance towards Zach. Shona is cupping her mouth in shock, almost fighting back a scream. He races towards the rocket, keeping Adam in his sight, as his older brother slowly makes his way down the ramp, opposite to the crowds of Kuh.
ZACH
Adam!
Just as Zach is about to propel himself into his brother's arms, Adam takes out a cattle prod, extending it, and then smacking Zach over the face. Shona screams as Zach is electrified, being knocked back onto the floor, scuffing himself in the mud.
ZACH
Argh!
SHONA
Zach!
Shona sprints over to him, immediately crouching by his side as he groans, recovering quickly.
ADAM
…Zach Ellis.
ZACH
I mean, I know we liked to roughhouse a bit, but even that's a bit much… Ow.
SHONA
Are you alright?
ZACH
I'm fine.
SHONA
What the hell, Adam?
ADAM
You… lived.
ZACH
Yeah, so did you. Hi, by the way. Don't know if you remember, but that's how people greet each other. Normal people!
SHONA
Adam, where have you been?
ADAM
Living my life. No thanks to you. The life you could never give me. The life you never wanted me to have!
ZACH
What are you talking about? Adam, what's got into you?!
ADAM
You… abandoned me.
ZACH
Abandoned, my arse. You died a year ago! Synthetic murdered you!
ADAM
No- Don't lie to me, don't lie to me!
Adam stretches out the cattle prod, and Zach raises his hands.
ZACH
Okay… Chill, man. What do you think I did?
ADAM
You tried to kill me, and now… I'll make you suffer. Take them on board!
Adam quivers, storming off. Zach is left utterly bewildered as he and his wife are seized and forced towards the ship along with the rest of the Kuh.
SHONA
Ow- Get your hands off me! Adam, what do you think you're doing?! Adam!
36 INT. ROCKET – DAY
Zach and Shona are strapped into the ship, next to the Kuh, murmuring resentfully. Shona looks over to Zach, who's incredibly silent, his brain mulling things over.
SHONA
You alright?
ZACH
Not exactly how I planned our reunion to go.
SHONA
What did he mean, you tried to kill him?
ZACH
I don't know. But there's only one way to find out.
The ship begins to judder violently, with the boom of the engine drowning everyone's screams out.
SHONA
Oh god… Here we go!
37 INT. SWAMPS – DAY
The ground erupting into a sea of fire, the trees igniting into nothing as the rocket launches off with extreme force into the sky. [Track 19 ends]
38 INT. STATION CORRIDOR
[Track 20: Digging Deeper] The Doctor continues to make her way through the small ventilation tunnels, looking through the metal grating down onto the corridor below, where Deisha is kicking and screaming, being escorted by Ozell guards.
DEISHA
Are you serious?! Just get off! I can walk by myself, you know! Ow!
They push her through a door and into a small chamber.
39 INT. RECONDITIONING CHAMBER
They enter a small, pentagonal space, with a chair in the middle, hooked up to some surgical equipment and a headset above it. The chair is geared towards an electronic, flickering screen mounted on a wall.
DEISHA
Alright, yeah, you've- you've had your fun, but you are NOT putting me in that, you got it?! I said, no! Aagh!
She tries to struggle, but they move her towards the chair, throw her down and strap her in.
DEISHA
No, no, no, please, no, stop, no, no, no!
XAS
Don't resist. It will all be over very quickly. He is the Master, and you will obey him.
DEISHA
No, I won't! No, no, no! Stop it! No! Dad! Please! Someone!
Xas moves towards a panel and starts to fiddle with some switches. From the vents, the Doctor sees some electrical charges pump through some cabling down towards the helmet.
DOCTOR (quietly)
Oh no, you don't.
She sonic the cables for a second, and then pockets it quickly.
XAS
What was that sound? There's someone here, quickly!
One of the Hunters starts towards the door, but they don't reach it – As Xas throws the lever, a discharge of energy explodes from the helmet, stunning all of the Ozell and knocking them out. Deisha cowers, dazed and faint.
DEISHA
Uh… what just happened?
One of the grates lifts up, and the Doctor pokes her head down, grinning.
DOCTOR
Might've been me, sorry!
DEISHA
Doctor? Could've cut that timing a little shorter, you know. What are you doing up there?
DOCTOR
Rescuing you, of course. Station this size, got to vent enough gases through for the different species to survive.
She jumps down, hitting the floor very quickly, and groaning.
DOCTOR
On second thoughts, maybe I should've found a softer landing spot… Ow.
She slowly gets up, stretches, then heads over to Deisha, unlocking her from the chair.
DEISHA
Is my Dad okay?
DOCTOR
I certainly hope so. He and Mum are looking for you back on Oxurn. With any hope, they've worked out that you're not there and are keeping themselves out of harm's way until we go to pick them up.
DEISHA
Have you… met my parents?
DOCTOR
Fair point. You been waiting for us long?
DEISHA
Longer than I'd hoped, but you made it anyway. Thanks for rescuing me.
DOCTOR
Always. We're not out of the woods yet, though. Gotta work out what the Master's doing with a War Station.
DEISHA
Declaring war, I'd say.
DOCTOR
But on who?
Deisha stands up.
DOCTOR
Are you hurt?
DEISHA
Few bruises, but all that carrying's mostly built up my muscles, y'know.
DOCTOR
You're brilliant. Optimistic, strong. We'll make a companion of you yet. Now, do you know your way around here?
DEISHA
Sort of, I'm not great at navigating.
DOCTOR
Can you take me somewhere? Before the Ozell wake up.
DEISHA
Where are you thinking?
The Doctor grabs Deisha's hand and leads her out of the chamber.
40 EXT. SPACE
The large rocket hurtles through the darkness of space, the bombardment of the fiery engines increasing in volume with each passing second.
38 INT. ROCKET
Adam brandishes his rod and looks down at Zach, strapped into the chair, as the ship rocks from side to side (now a lot gentler than before). With each sentence Zach says, he is struck over the face.
ZACH
Your name is Adam Ellis- Aargh! You were born on the 12th June 1986- Aack! Our parents were… Sofia and James Ellis- Agh! You… were my brother, Ashley's brother- Augh!
ADAM
Shut up!
SHONA
Stop it! Adam.
ADAM
Shona, I'm really sorry you got caught up in all this. Really, I am. But I have a score to settle, and you certainly aren't going to throw a wrench in my plans.
ZACH
What score?!
ADAM
Traitor!
Adam thumps Zach in the stomach with the electric rod, and he coughs.
MASTER
You tell them, Adam.
The Master swaggers in. Zach gasps.
ZACH
No… It can't be. You?
SHONA
The Master… you know him?
MASTER
Hello, Zach.
ZACH
We've met before.
MASTER
Do you have a minute to talk about our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ?
He chuckles lightly.
FADE TO:
39 EXT. WALKWAY - DAY
As he strolls along, the Master, once again, pops up out of nowhere and startles Zach.
MASTER
Do you have a minute to talk about our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ?
ZACH
Okay, fine. Fine. I'll take your goddamn flyer.
MASTER
Thank you. Just sign here, please.
He offers a clipboard, to which Zach scribbles his name down and snatches a flyer.
ZACH
There. Now don't bother me or my family with your stupid girl scout cookie competition again. Please.
MASTER
Thank you for your contribution. You don't know the impact it will have on the Universe.
Zach brushes past him and stops outside his door.
FADE TO:
40 INT. ROCKET
Zach raises an eyebrow.
ZACH
You… were you stalking my family?
MASTER
If you don't mind, Adam, I'd like a moment with your brother.
ADAM
He's not my brother. Not anymore.
ZACH
Adam, how can you say that?!
ADAM
I said shut up!
Adam smacks Zach across the face once again, and he groans. The Master chuckles, slowly walking over to Zach and releasing him from the straps on his chair.
MASTER
This really wasn't what you were expecting, was it?
ZACH
What have you done to him?
MASTER (whispering)
I told him the truth. From a certain point of view.
Once Zach is free, he crumbles to the floor.
MASTER
You're weak. If only the Doctor could see you now. Beaten by your own brother's hand. Abuse runs in the family, I hear. Your dad ran off and got stabbed in a back alley, alone and stupid, your mum tormented you. No wonder you try to kill Adam.
ZACH
I tried to do what?
The ship starts to judder once again, before falling silent.
MASTER
We've arrived. Walk with me. Now.
Adam grabs Zach and throws him behind the Master, as the Kuh all look at each other with uncertainty. [Track 20 ends]
41 EXT. WAR STATION
[Track 21: Tecteun] The rocket has docked on the side of the War Station, and the occupants start to file out in an orderly queue through a glass tunnel.
42 INT. STATION CORRIDOR
Zach and the Master stroll along the corridor, passing a few guards, and seeing slaves be forced down the hallways. Zach is continually eyeing the TCE in the Master's pocket.
MASTER
Has the Doctor told you who I am yet?
ZACH
An old friend. And enemy.
MASTER
That's putting it simply. It's far more complex than that.
ZACH
Yeah, I don't really care. Wanna tell me what your obsession with my family is?
MASTER
You're a friend of the Doctor. I needed a distraction.
ZACH
Okay, you're gonna keep being complex?
MASTER
For now. Through here, please.
The Master gestures towards a door, and ushers Zach inside.
43 INT. THE MASTER'S OFFICE
The pair walk into a swanky office – made from a dark steel, much like the rest of the station, but this room is slightly differently designed – White, hexagonal lights line the wall, much like the TARDIS roundels, and in the centre of a room of a rich, mahogany desk housing lots of futuristic monitors, at which the Doctor sits, her feet up, comfortably lounging in a large leather armchair, with Deisha by her side.
DOCTOR
Ah! You took your time. But you're here at last.
ZACH
Deisha!
DEISHA
Dad!
Zach goes to embrace his daughter, but the Master whips out the TCE and points it at him.
MASTER
Uh-uh. Don't move.
DOCTOR
I'd do as he says.
ZACH
Are you alright?
DEISHA
Yeah, I'm fine! Less so cos he's here, more cos you are, so I'd say it evens out.
ZACH
Good girl.
MASTER
You don't mind if I have a drink, do you?
DOCTOR
Be my guest.
The Master looks at Zach.
MASTER
Crystal, please.
ZACH
What?
MASTER
Crystal. We both know you have one. From a Kuh?
ZACH
Don't know what you're talking about.
The Master sighs and aims his TCE at Deisha. Reluctantly, Zach takes out the crystal and passes it to the Master.
MASTER
Thank you very much.
The Master starts heading towards a large, bulky machine, built into the wall.
MASTER
So, I spend all this time hunting you down, you evade capture from the best predators in the galaxy, and now you serve yourself up to me? I don't like being patronised.
The Master places the crystal in the machine, and it's crushed into a liquid, filtering down into a goblet, which he then drinks from, causing Zach to wince.
DOCTOR
I'm not serving myself up. I'm here to talk.
The Doctor pushes back from the desk and stands up, starting to walk around the space.
DOCTOR
I love what you've done with the space. Very you.
MASTER
I thought you'd be impressed. That's why I saved the surprise.
DOCTOR
Yeah, I worked it out in the end. War Station, built up from slaves, ready to overpower any civilisation with the power of fifty times your opponent.
The Master places the goblet gently on the side.
MASTER
The promise of power is beautiful. Aspirations… raise. Goals are achieved. You can get anyone to help if they think that they get a fair share of the deal. Which, of course, they're not.
DOCTOR
But you reinforce that idea of security, of power, of supremacy through your reconditioning machines.
MASTER
I've been studying different cultures across the Universe, trying to work out what makes the ultimate oppressive force. I've been to all sorts of places – the Dalek death camps, the slave trade of Otuzan, Crimea in the 29th Century.
ZACH
Hang on… we were there!
MASTER
Exactly.
44 EXT. MYS SARYCH – DAY
The Master is strolling along the dunes.
MASTER (oc)
Upon my research, I detected some temporal signals. Thought it might be the Doctor. But what do I find instead?
He sees Zach and the refugees, heading down the beach. He takes a scanner out of his pocket, and points it at them, staring at the readings.
MASTER
All human.
He ponders for a moment, then realises.
MASTER (oc)
She had made another little friend.
He hurries away.
CUT TO:
Zach suddenly frowns, seeing the silhouette of the Master on the shore.
ZACH
Hang on…
MARYA
What?
Zach glances back to Marya, then at the hill. The Master is gone.
ZACH
I thought… I thought someone was staring. Never mind.
He shakes his head.
45 INT. THE MASTER'S TARDIS
The Master flies his TARDIS, the co-ordinates locked on 21st Century London.
MASTER (oc)
I spent some time collecting information from the Overlord with her subtle hypnotic propaganda, then set to work on implementing it myself. I knew the Doctor would catch on to my plans eventually, so I hatched a distraction. I studied your family, and worked out a way to use them as a means of drawing your attention.
He pulls the lever down.
46 EXT. WALKWAY – DAY
Shona opens the door, and the Master is stood there in a grey overall, lugging a cardboard box.
MASTER
Hey, miss.
SHONA
Can I help ya?
MASTER
Delivery for you, miss. Coffee machine, I think.
SHONA
I… I didn't order a coffee machine?
MASTER
Look, signed here.
The Master presents Zach's signature on a clipboard. She stares at it for a few seconds, raising her eyebrows, slightly shocked and emotional at the same time.
47 INT. ZACH'S KITCHEN – DAY
Shona pours herself a cup of coffee, with Deisha already drinking one. After a few moments, they start to get a bit groggy, and collapse onto the floor. The Master looks in from the window, grinning menacingly.
48 INT. THE MASTER'S OFFICE
Deisha snarls.
DEISHA
You drugged me?
Deisha tries to charge at him, but the Doctor holds her back.
DOCTOR
Deisha, let me handle this.
DEISHA
No, no, we're not skipping over this, you DRUGGED me and my mum?
The Master snickers.
DEISHA
And he's laughing- and YOU'RE LAUGHING?
ZACH
Deisha, really, don't.
MASTER
I admire your spirit. Even after everything, you keep fighting.
He towers over her.
MASTER
But do you really want to try me? I'm a Time Lord, my lifespan is infinitely larger than yours. I wield power you could never dream of. I can stare into the heart of the time vortex itself and bend it to my will.
DEISHA
Yeah? Well, I might be just a little girl to you, but this little girl has endured your so-called "reconditioning" for weeks.
MASTER
I like you.
His hand rests on a button, and Deisha glances down, surprised.
MASTER
It makes this a lot more fun.
Two Hunters run in.
MASTER
Take these two back to the workforce. I have things to discuss with the Doctor.
The Hunters take Zach and Deisha and haul them out.
ZACH
Hey- What do you think you're doing?! Not again!
DOCTOR
Zach! Leave them alone! Zach- Just- Be ready! Be ready, okay?!
ZACH
I will! I will! Don't worry!
The doors shut. The Doctor's face falls. [Track 21 ends]
49 INT. STATION CORRIDOR
[Track 22: Uprising] Zach and Deisha are escorted through the hallways. An Oxurn Hunter approaches them, and stops their guards.
YUREK
Stop. Adam wants to see them.
DERILL
The Master said he wanted them with the other workers-
YUREK
And I'll take them there immediately after. He wants to hurt them first.
DERILL
…Yes.
Derill bows, and Yurek drags Zach and Shona away.
YUREK (quietly)
Keep your voice down, follow me.
ZACH
But where-?
YUREK (quietly)
Voice down!
They turn a corner and head into a lift.
50 INT. LIFT
They all bundle into the lift, which shoots down.
YUREK
I need your help to stop the Master.
ZACH
What-? I'm sorry, are you messing around right now? You want to stop the Master?
YUREK
I worked it out. He's managed to hypnotise us all, everyone on this station, through subtle suggestions that he is a good person, that what he's doing is good.
ZACH
Through the Supreme's tech, right?
YUREK
But anyone who's been in contact with him for a prolonged period can resist it after a while, as they start to see him for who he truly is.
DEISHA
That's why he couldn't control me.
ZACH
So- so if you resisted the programming - Sorry, sorry. Who are you?
DEISHA
Yurek, the leader of the Hunters.
ZACH
Wait, seriously?
YUREK
Yes.
ZACH
Don't you see? With you on our side, we can get the Hunters to turn on the Master.
YUREK
It's… not that simple. Which is why I need your help. The Hunters are still programmed to blindly obey the Master, we need to recondition them.
DEISHA
As well as all the slaves.
YUREK
Exactly.
ZACH
Okay, so we need to organise the entire station to change their minds without the Master finding out? That's easy(!)
DEISHA
I mean, the Doctor's distracting him right now. If we get the Hunters on-side first, they can order the slaves into the machines.
ZACH
What if you told them that they needed to re-establish the connection, and then change the directive of the reconditioning machine? I can help with that - I've done it before.
YUREK
I'll take you there.
ZACH
Thanks. We also need to get everyone out of here. Deisha, I need you to be a brave girl for me, and get ready for an evacuation.
DEISHA
Okay, how?
ZACH
When everyone's been reconditioned, we're gonna have a mass panic. Thankfully, there are a lot of rockets on standby, I'll need you to help organise the movement, okay?
DEISHA
Again, how?
ZACH
That's what you'll have to work out. Sorry.
DEISHA
Great, thanks.
ZACH
We'll be as quick as we can to sort out the Hunters, so you should be safe, but just… be careful, okay?
DEISHA
Sure.
YUREK
This is your stop.
Deisha nods, hurrying out, before looking back one more time.
ZACH
Good girl.
DEISHA
I know.
They smirk, and the doors shut. Zach's face sags.
ZACH
Should I have gone with her?
YUREK
She's managed this far on her own.
ZACH
Yeah… Yeah. She can do this. I believe in her.
His eyes shift from side to side, then the doors open, and Yurek leads him out. [Track 22 ends]
51 INT. STATION CORRIDOR
[Track 23: Metebelis IV] Deisha sneaks through, ducking behind a wall as a few Hunters patrol through. She holds her breath, keeping her eyes closed as they walk past, then continues on silently.
52 INT. THE MASTER'S OFFICE
The Master slouches in his seat, leaving the Doctor standing, somewhat unnerved, shifting from leg to leg.
DOCTOR
Why do all this? What's the point?
MASTER
You know the point.
DOCTOR
Conquest? Power?
MASTER
Yeah…
He grins.
DOCTOR
That's it? That's all you amount to? Oppression?
Quickly, that grin fades.
MASTER
…Yeah.
DOCTOR
Power isn't everything. You can be more; you can be better! I know you can, I know you're capable of it.
MASTER
Why do I need more when I've got what I want?
DOCTOR
Go on, then. You got your army; you've got your power. What then? What do you do once you've conquered everything? More slaves? More cruelty? Where does it end?
MASTER
Why would it end?
DOCTOR
Because what's the point of it all? All that hurt, all that pain, why do it in the first place? What do you gain from the misery of others? What's the point of that power?! When the entire Universe is under your control, what more is there in life?
The Master stands, spinning around the Doctor.
MASTER
That pain… warms my hearts.
He thumps his chest.
MASTER
Right here. The screams, the hurt… the torment. It's beautiful.
DOCTOR
Empty words. Why is it beautiful?
MASTER
Because hope doesn't exist without conflict. And I am the one to bring hope… and take it away.
She slowly backs away, raising an eyebrow, towards his desk.
DOCTOR
Why, though? You don't have to-
MASTER
I want to!
DOCTOR
No. You don't. You can step away from this, come with me. We can start again, just like when we were kids.
MASTER
Alternatively, you could join me.
DOCTOR
What?
MASTER
Start again. I like that. Just like on Gallifrey. Messing about, skipping classes. Being troublemakers. Or, as Time Lords would call us, criminals. Interfering with the lives of others. We're not so different, see? All you need is the right perspective. We could do this… together.
He takes her hand. A tear rolls down her face.
DOCTOR
…See, that's where I know you. "You can get anyone to help if they think that they get a fair share of the deal."
She yanks her hand away. The Master smirks, and the Doctor falls back onto his chair.
MASTER
Yeah. You're right. I have to ask. Were you tempted? Even just a little?
The Doctor glances quickly to the side, then back to the Master.
MASTER
Go on, be a sport. Were you?
The Master slowly walks towards her, to which she reciprocates, standing up and moving him back.
DOCTOR
Be with you? Always. But not like this. You were my friend once, and you can be again, but not if you're hurting others.
MASTER
Well. That's a shame, isn't it?
She grimaces. [Track 23 ends]
DOCTOR
What happened to you?
He scoffs. [Track 24: Set You Free]
DOCTOR
No, really. Really. You didn't used to be like this. You were better.
MASTER
You know what happened.
DOCTOR
No. We were going to be brilliant. We were brilliant. How did it come to this?
MASTER
Sentimental, Doctor? Waste of time. I've moved on.
DOCTOR
Have you?
MASTER
Yes. There's nothing you can say that'll stop the launch of the War Station.
DOCTOR
Then I'm sorry.
She finally stops, positioning him away from the monitor, which is flashing red.
53 INT. TRANSMISSION STATION
Zach is running through a variety of cables dangling down from the ceiling, tethering a large box with lots of flashing lights up to a satellite-like contraption, trying to figure it out, whilst Yurek is poking their head out of the door, watching the corridor. He glances over to Zach.
YUREK
Getting anywhere?
ZACH
Well, sort of. I recognise it.
YUREK
Great.
ZACH
But I feel like now's a good time to mention I've never actually properly done it before. I only watched someone do it.
YUREK
What?
ZACH
But, my memory's pretty good, I'm sure I can remember it. What the hell is this?
He crouches down to study an oblong attachment. Yurek peeks over his shoulder.
YUREK
Neuro-directive technology. We used something similar to pilot the rocket.
ZACH
That wasn't on the Supreme's one. Why's the Master added this?
YUREK
Maintaining a neural link between him and the transmitted signal?
ZACH
Of course he did.
He rolls his eyes, then sits up.
ZACH
Wait. We can use this.
YUREK
We can?
ZACH
If he's transmitting the signal, we can use this to transmit something else. Help me out here.
He dives under, looking at the wires on the back of the oblong device.
ZACH
Yeah, yeah, yeah. This flashing light looks like it might mean something.
YUREK
Do you know what you're doing?
ZACH
No idea, but we gotta give it a try.
He looks around, and sees a headset and earpiece on the side.
ZACH
Aha!
He snatches it.
ZACH
Okay, I assume… the headset's to set it up, the earpiece is to maintain it, right?
Yurek shrugs.
ZACH
Man, really throwing ourselves in the deep-end here, aren't we? Okay. Who's doing this?
YUREK
Uh… let me.
ZACH
Thanks, was waiting for you to volunteer. Here.
Zach hands Yurek the headset, which he fits onto his head snugly. Zach crouches back down, and starts to fiddle with the wires, moving one of them from the red light to the blue light.
ZACH
Okay, I think that should've connected.
The headset gives a quick buzz, shocking Yurek, then switches on.
YUREK
Aah-! I think so, too…
ZACH
So we just gotta… y'know… tell them… something.
YUREK
I know what to do.
54 INT. STATION CORRIDOR
The Hunters patrol. Something crackles on their radio.
YUREK (oc)
Reconditioning necessary. Head to reconditioning immediately. Reconditioning necessary. Head to reconditioning immediately.
The Hunters look at each other, a little puzzled, but comply with the orders. Deisha slips behind them and heads towards a door, then dives back as another set of Hunters come through the door. Once they're gone, she lets out a sly sneer.
DEISHA
Up your game, boys.
She hurries inside.
55 INT. REST ZONE
Deisha tiptoes inside, casually integrating herself into the crowd lying on the floor, against boxes and walls. She sees her mum and joins her side.
DEISHA
You alright?
SHONA
Oh, Deisha!
DEISHA
Shh, shh. Keep it down. You seen Uncle Adam?
SHONA
He's working for them… wait, where'd they go?
DEISHA
If things are going according to plan… Dad.
SHONA
Is he alright?
DEISHA
No time to explain, but the Hunters should be working for us soon, and we need to be ready to get everyone out onto the rockets.
SHONA
Huh?
DEISHA
Look, just, when they come back and take us all away or whatever, I need you to come with me and help me find a map or something.
SHONA
Okay… and then everyone escapes?
DEISHA
Hopefully. Something's bound to go wrong, though.
She smiles hopefully.
DEISHA
Gotta stay optimistic.
SHONA
I'm so proud of you.
The pair hug. [Track 24 ends]
56 INT. STATION CORRIDOR
[Track 25: This New Nose Is So Unreliable] The Hunters all file in an orderly line, swaying impatiently, waiting for their turn. As one comes out, another enters, and the reconditioned Hunters stare on in horror at the zombified expressions of their peers.
57 INT. RECONDITIONING CHAMBER
A Hunter steps inside, approaching the platform, sitting down in the seat and waiting for the helmet to lower down onto her head.
A POV shot opens, with data fragments shooting about in the eyepiece. A voice echoes.
YUREK (oc)
Realise the truth. Realise the truth. Who is the Master? He is an agent of evil. He is cunning, he is a manipulator. He has manipulated you.
Flashes of the Master's brutality show up – threatening the Hunters, hurting them, ordering them about.
YUREK (oc)
Realise the truth. Realise the truth!
The headset lifts up, and the Hunter gasps for breath. She stumbles out, shocked and disorientated. Her radio crackles.
YUREK (oc)
You have new orders. The prisoners need reconditioning. We are evacuating this station. I repeat, recondition the prisoners and prepare for evacuation.
She nods.
58 INT. STATION CORRIDOR
The Hunters storm through the corridors, fearless and determined, their predatory presence turned to one of anger rather than stealth.
59 INT. REST ZONE
The doors slide open and the Hunters parade inside.
XAS
This group will follow me. You will be reconditioned.
DEISHA
That's our cue. Come on.
The crowds are herded out of the rest zone by the Hunters and into the corridors.
60 INT. STATION CORRIDOR
As the crowds march through, Shona and Deisha slip away through a side door and into another corridor. Now unrestricted, they bound along, checking lots of different rooms.
DEISHA
There's… there's no map here. How do the Hunters find their way?
SHONA
Will they have one on them?
DEISHA
Worth a shot. Let's go find one-
Deisha turns and bumps into a Hunter. She falls onto the floor, and the creature looms over her.
DEISHA
Aah! Heh heh… sorry. You work for Yurek, yeah? You been reconditioned?
XUMP
Mhmm…
DEISHA
What's your name?
XUMP
Xump.
DEISHA
Xump? I love it. Xump, we need to be ready for a huge in-flow of panicked civilians. We gotta get them off this spaceship, can you help please?
Xump holds up a holographic list, detailing species and their associated rockets.
XUMP
These are the shuttles they transported on.
DEISHA
That was easy, wow.
XUMP
Follow me.
Shona and Deisha rush after Xump.
CUT TO:
On another floor, Zach and Yurek – now wearing the earpiece – are speeding down the corridor, passing the queues to the reconditioning chambers.
ZACH
Seems to be working. Where the hell is Adam?
YUREK
He doesn't work for me; he won't have been conditioned yet.
ZACH
Do you think you could find him please? It's not enough that this place is being cleared out, we need to blow it sky high. Or… space high, I guess.
YUREK
The central spire is full of weapons, explosives. It's the hub of the War Station - If that goes up, everything will lose integrity.
ZACH
Then I guess we've got ourselves a plan.
YUREK
If you prime the explosives, there's an automatic detonation, but I can hold it until we're all clear. Just gotta find the remote.
ZACH
What about Adam?
YUREK
…I'll find him. You go, before anyone catches you.
ZACH
'Aight.
Zach bolts down the corridor into a lift.
61 INT. STATION HUB
Zach bursts through the doors onto the passageway, looking down at the chasm, then up at the gigantic column in the centre.
ZACH
I think that's the spire.
He runs across the bridge into the spire.
62 INT. STATION SPIRE
Zach heads inside, seeing a few workers putting things away - some of the equipment is identical to the ones the Doctor saw earlier, and there's a variety of other weapons stacked about the place too – on racks, in crates, lining the dark steel walls. They all stand up to look at him.
SLAVE
Who are you?
ZACH
Me? Who are you? Wha- What're you still doing here? New orders, go. Go on, go, quickly!
The slaves raise an eyebrow.
ZACH
Come on, this place is shutting down, we're going home.
SLAVE
I… should notify the Master of this.
ZACH
No, go and talk to the Hunters. They'll explain. Get out of here!
The slaves rush out, as Zach starts looking through crates.
SLAVE (quietly)
Contact Adam.
As Zach rummages through random junk, he finds some heavy spiked balls.
ZACH
This looks like something…
He sees a few sticks of dynamite.
ZACH
That looks even more like something.
He starts to lug the crate out of the spire and onto the passageways.
63 INT. STATION HUB
Zach begins to line the electrical balls along the side of the bridge, flicking a switch on the side, before attaching the dynamite onto the floor and walls of the spire.
ZACH
Boom. Ish. Oh, I dunno.
He continues the job, muttering away to himself. From a window on a higher floor, a figure looks down on him – Adam is gritting his teeth, clenching his fists and shaking.
ADAM
I'm gonna kill him.
He storms off down the corridor, with Zach caught unaware, continuing to work on the explosives. [Track 25 ends]
64 INT. STORAGE HOLD
[Track 26: Angry Enough To Kill] Yurek rushes into the storage hold where the TARDIS is with another Hunter, the pair searching through a few boxes before Yurek picks up a remote. He holds it up gleefully, presenting it to his friend.
YUREK
I got it!
KOLKA
Then let's go- Aargh!
Suddenly, Kolka shrieks, being zapped and miniaturised into nothing. The Master stands in the doorway, aiming the TCE, with the Doctor in tow.
MASTER
What are you doing?
That gleeful expression disappears, and in its place forms one of fear.
MASTER
I said, what are you doing?
YUREK
I… I-
MASTER
I come to find the Doctor's TARDIS, and I discover you double crossing me? Think about this. Really, think about this.
Yurek eyes a gun sticking out of the crate. His primal reflexes kick in, managing to swipe the weapon and point it at the Master, just as he zaps the crate and it shrinks.
MASTER
Put it down. Put it down!
Yurek falters, his hand shaking slightly. He holds out the remote.
YUREK
You know what this is?
MASTER
The handheld trigger for Paryan explosive units. Useless if they're unprimed.
YUREK
Exactly. So don't try anything or we all go up.
MASTER
I'm disappointed in you, Yurek. A hunter like yourself should be able to rely on brawn, physical talent, not weapons.
YUREK
We're done with the manipulation. We're done with the tricks. Let the Doctor go.
MASTER
She's my prize.
DOCTOR
I'm not your anything.
YUREK
Your tyranny is over.
MASTER
No. It's not.
The Master fires the TCE at Yurek, and he is hit- he diminishes into nothing in an instant, and the remote falls to the floor. The Master stamps his foot, crushing it.
MASTER
TRAITOR!
DOCTOR
No!
He sighs.
MASTER
Useless. Now, I think we'd better get out of here, don't you? Nothing to stop the explosion now.
DOCTOR
Zach… Zach!
MASTER
Yep- come on!
The Master drags the Doctor away.
DOCTOR
No!
She tries to fight him off, but he easily overpowers her. [Track 26 ends]
65 INT. STATION HUB
[Track 27: Gathering Strength] Zach is continuing to place explosive charges throughout the chasm, now spread across multiple levels. Something starts to beep.
ZACH
What's… what's that?
He bends down to look at the explosives, to see them gearing up – the balls start to shoot small electrical charges between the spikes.
ZACH
Oh, no. No, no, no. Yurek, no! Something's gone wrong. Deisha…
He looks up at the corridors.
66 INT. STATION CORRIDOR
The prisoners are being escorted into their rockets according to their species. Deisha and Shona are supervising the job, with the Hunters following their orders.
DEISHA
I think this is working.
SHONA
For now.
DEISHA
Loving the optimism, Mum… Where's Dad got to? Should I go find him?
SHONA
No, no. You stay here with me.
Deisha frowns.
67 INT. STATION HUB
Zach races about, trying to stop the charges, but they continue to beep, getting louder as the charges become more unstable and more frequent.
ZACH
No, stop, stop, stop! Come on!
He tries to pick them up, then drops them.
ZACH
I can't stop it! It's… I'm sorry.
ADAM
Zach Ellis!
Zach stops, recognising the voice, and slowly turning around. Adam is advancing towards him, still brandishing his cattle prod.
ZACH
Adam. You need to get out of here. We both do.
ADAM
Look at you. Trying to kill us all. Looks like I was right after all.
ZACH
I'm not messing around, man, we need to go, now.
ADAM
You're not going anywhere.
ZACH
This place is about to blow up!
ADAM
Then you'll die with it.
ZACH
So will you!
ADAM
I don't care.
ZACH
Just… go to the reconditioning chambers, we might have time to fix you. Adam, please, this isn't you…
ADAM
Don't tell me what I am!
He points the cattle prod, and Zach throws his hands up.
ZACH
Okay… okay, just… pl-please. Listen to me.
ADAM
No. You're doing exactly what the Master said would happen. Murderer. To everyone here. Just to prove a point?
ZACH
No, that's not what's happening!
ADAM
Give over, I can see the explosives in your hand!
Zach looks down at the spiked ball. He holds it up.
ZACH
This?
He gulps.
ZACH
Listen, you need to trust me. Please, the Master's brainwashed you. More than the others, he's bent your mind, he's broken you. If you don't go… I'll have to use this.
ADAM
Really?
ZACH
If I have to. I don't want to. But you are not thinking straight. The Master has infected your mind!
ADAM
Then do it.
Adam moves closer.
ZACH
Please, Adam, don't come any closer.
ADAM
Do it!
ZACH
Don't make me do this!
ADAM
I'm not doing anything, prove yourself to be a killer!
ZACH
I'm not a killer!
ADAM
Yes you are! I know you'll try, stop hiding!
Zach throws the charge, and Adam knocks it out of the way with the prod, clattering down the chasm. His eyes remain wide open.
ADAM
And there it is.
ZACH
I didn't mean to… Adam, come on. I'm your brother, I'd never want to hurt you. Let's get out of here. Please, I'm begging you, man-!
ADAM
No. This is it. You and me.
ZACH
Is this really what you want? Us to die fighting? I am not a killer, you know that.
ADAM
No, I don't.
ZACH
Why would I kill you? Seriously, tell me. Why?
Adam doesn't respond.
ADAM
I'm not waiting to find out.
ZACH
Adam… Adam, no!
He charges forward, body slamming Zach and throwing him onto the floor. Zach groans, recovering.
ZACH
Get… off!
Zach pushes him away, and the pair get up. Adam throws a punch, but Zach blocks it, shoving him back. Zach bends part of the railing and breaks it off, using it to defend himself as Adam lowers his cattle prod. The electricity surges through the railing and Zach immediately drops it, jumping back. Adam uses this moment of weakness to his advantage, smacking Zach across the face, and he falls back against the other railing.
ZACH
No… please. I'm… your brother…
ADAM
Shut up!
Adam erupts into a fury of punches, repeatedly thrashing his face.
ZACH
Stop… stop!
Zach, now heavily bruised and bleeding immensely, does a barrel roll into Adam's legs, tripping him over. Exhausted, he gets up, limping away from his older brother.
ZACH
Gotta… go. Gotta…
He coughs up blood, but continues to move along the passageway. Adam pulls himself up.
ADAM
Zach… GET BACK HERE!
Once again, Adam stampedes towards Zach, but the beeping of the charges stops –
BOOM!
The structural supports of the passageway explode, collapsing in on themselves, and the central spire starts to fall apart, igniting into a haze of smoke and fire. Both of the men yell in surprise.
68 INT. STATION CORRIDOR
The station rumbles, with the distant explosion, the lights flickering, and dust falling from the ceiling.
SHONA
What… was that?
DEISHA
I dunno, but it wasn't good. I knew it was too easy.
The ceiling starts to come crashing down, and Shona pulls Deisha back from a piece of falling debris.
SHONA
It's falling apart – We need to launch now!
XUMP
But it's-
SHONA
I don't care, we've run out of time! LAUNCH!
69 EXT. WAR STATION
Explosions erupt across the station as the rockets speed away from the station.
70 INT. STATION HUB
Zach and Adam are holding onto the railings as the bridges smash into each other, disintegrating with each passing second. Zach tries to climb up towards the door, but Adam grabs his leg and throws him down onto one of the supports.
ZACH
Aagh!
ADAM
I'm not letting you leave here ALIVE! I HATE YOU!
ZACH
…You're not Adam… It can't be you.
ADAM
I… hate you!
ZACH
Then I won't let you spoil the legacy of my brother.
He launches himself back towards Adam, clambering up the crumbling passageways, catching up to him and driving his fist into his stomach. Adam yells out, grabbing Zach and throwing him across onto another structure, which he barely manages to cling onto.
ZACH
Agh- Come on!
A metal beam slides down, and Zach grabs hold of it, swinging back over to Adam and kicking him across the face. He goes flying, trying to grab hold of another beam, but his hand falls onto a nail. He screeches, and Zach pants.
ZACH
I'm getting out of here.
ADAM
Oh, no you don't.
The boys parkour up the falling rubble, dented sheets of steel, broken pillars and broken fan blades, continuing to battle each other as they do so, launching an equal amount of hits on each other. Finally, Zach jumps on Adam's head over to the doorway, pulling himself up and into the corridor.
He falls back onto the floor, drenched in sweat, blood and wounds.
ZACH
Oh, god… Oh, god.
He rests his head for a moment. [Track 27 ends]
ADAM
Zach! Zach Ellis!
[Track 28: Emer-Gency Exit] Zach sits up, and looks over the edge. Adam is clinging for his life onto a railing, as the rest of the structures have fallen and melted at the engine, which is starting to come apart.
ADAM
I knew you'd… do this. I knew you'd betray me. But how could you?
ZACH
Betray? Betray… No, it was YOU! You did this to me!
Zach shakes his head, tears viciously streaming down his face.
ZACH
I loved you! You were my hero! You looked after me, protected me, when our parents didn't! Everything I was… was because of YOU!
ADAM
Agh… because… I loved you too… Gah!
His grip starts to slip.
ADAM
I saw you in me… Your love, your passion… I knew that you'd be amazing. You just needed someone to inspire you…!
ZACH
All this time, I was… fighting in your name. To make you proud.
ADAM
And now, you turned that fight against me.
ZACH
Not against you. I tried to save you! I tried to inspire you the way you did me! To make you see the light! I fought for you! For the memory of you! Well, I don't need that memory anymore. I've proved that… I'm just as good on my own. I don't need parents… or a brother. I've got a wife, a daughter, a sister… I've got the Doctor. My real family. I don't need you anymore.
He stands up again, choking on his tears, and extremely hesitant, before he says-
ZACH
Goodbye, Adam.
ADAM
No! Don't leave me! Please! You're proving… I was right! You're just… a cold-hearted killer!
ZACH
If you want. Whatever you want to think. I don't care anymore.
ADAM
Zach, please! Come back! ZACH!
He limps away, silently screaming, quivering from his fight. [Track 28 ends]
71 INT. STATION CORRIDOR
[Track 29: Thank You] The station continues to shake, the lights flashing and the walls cracking. The Master pushes the Doctor along the corridor.
MASTER
Time to get out of here, wouldn't you agree?
DOCTOR
I've never been part of one of your escape plans before - Why exactly couldn't we have used my TARDIS?
MASTER
Because no-one can fly your TARDIS properly, and even so, I don't trust you. The whole reason I wanted your TARDIS earlier was to destroy it.
DOCTOR
Well, isn't that nice?
MASTER
If you're thinking about ways to escape, forget it. You're coming with me. You can be my pet if you want. How the tables turn.
DOCTOR
Appreciate the offer, but got things to do, y'know.
MASTER
Not anymore.
The Doctor pulls the Master out of the way of a falling door.
DOCTOR
This place really isn't safe to travel through. This place will be gone in a matter of minutes. Where's your TARDIS?
MASTER
Not too far now.
DOCTOR
How long did it take you to build all this? And now it's falling to pieces.
MASTER
Well, you might have stopped me this time, but it's too late for you. I own you; you can't beat me anymore.
SHONA (oc)
Maybe she can't, but we can.
Shona and Deisha step out in front of the Doctor and the Master.
MASTER
Oh look, it's the Ellis girls. Here for another round of kidnapping?
SHONA
Let the Doctor go.
MASTER
I don't think so.
SHONA
I don't think I recall asking.
The Hunters reinforce Shona and Deisha, surrounding the Master, their teeth bare, snarling. The Master glances around nervously, his hand tightly gripped around the TCE.
MASTER
Now, I'm not sure if you want to do this.
SHONA
Oh, I'm sure. I'm not going to tell you again. Let the Doctor go.
MASTER
You see, I view her as… how would you say it… insurance.
The TCE jabs firmly into the Doctor's back, presenting her as a human shield.
MASTER
Any of you get near me, she'll be the new barbie doll for your daughter to play with. And then I'll come for all of you. Out of the way, come on.
Shona scoffs.
SHONA
Are you kidding me? No way.
MASTER
I'm going to count to three.
DOCTOR
Just do as he says.
MASTER
One…
Shona and the Master lock eyes.
MASTER
Two…
SHONA
Alright, alright. Fine.
Reluctantly, the group step aside, allowing the Master to pass through. He turns around to face all of his opponents at once.
MASTER
I'm sorry I couldn't stay longer. Really, I would've loved to spend some more time breaking your spirits, but um… the Doctor will have to do. Goodbye, Ozell. Goodbye, humans-
A wall comes crashing down over his head and the Doctor jumps out of the way.
DOCTOR
Aah!
Zach pokes his head through the wall, out of breath.
ZACH
You would not believe the trip I've had.
DEISHA
Dad!
Zach, Shona and Deisha all run into a big hug.
DOCTOR
Nice to see you're okay. Did you find Adam?
ZACH
Uh… don't worry about him.
DOCTOR
Now, then. I think we should get out of here, don't you? You lot are invited too, if you want-
The Master shirks off the wall and sprints away.
DERILL
He is not getting away! After him!
The Hunters fall onto all fours and gallop after him.
DOCTOR
Hey, wait-!
XAS
No! You go. He's ours, now.
DOCTOR
Are you sure?
The ship shakes even more violently.
XAS
I don't think we've got time to change our minds. Go!
DOCTOR
…Thank you. Come on, you three! TARDIS is this way!
The four sprint in the opposite direction, as the Hunters resume their chase for the Master. [Track 29 ends]
CUT TO:
[Track 30: The Future Is Mine 0:00 – 0:34 (fadeout needed)] The group bounds around a corner as one of the lights comes crashing down, causing Deisha to shriek.
ZACH
Jesus, how many times do I have to tell you to park closer?!
DOCTOR
Are we seriously going to have this argument again?
ZACH
When we're on an exploding spaceship, I feel like I have a right to be slightly vexed!
DOCTOR
You're the one who set the charges off early!
ZACH
Yurek said he'd pause them!
DOCTOR
Yurek's dead!
ZACH
What?!
DOCTOR
Through here!
The Doctor uses the sonic on the door and it slides open.
72 INT. STORAGE HOLD
They sprint inside, smashing through the crates and pressing themselves against the TARDIS, the door of which is promptly unlocked.
DOCTOR
In, in, in, off we go!
They all head inside the box and the door slams shut, instantly dematerialising afterwards.
73 EXT. WAR STATION
The station blows up in a cacophony of light and fire, before dissipating into the darkness of space, and leaving silence. [Track 30 ends]
74 EXT. MARSH COURT – DAY
[Track 31: Keep Your Faith 5:31 – 8:01] The TARDIS gently wheezes back into reality, parking itself, once again, on the green outside the Ellis' flat. Deisha and Shona stumble out, while Zach strides onto the grass, and the Doctor looks on from the blue box.
DEISHA
We're home… We actually… actually got home. You did it!
She takes a deep breath, embracing clean air.
DEISHA
Ah, I bet I have a bunch of texts!
She takes out her phone.
DEISHA
Oh my god, I'll never take signal for granted again… and… no texts. What the hell, you guys?
SHONA
The only thing I'm looking forward to is a shower and my bed.
DEISHA
Still… no texts.
SHONA
Come on, you. Inside.
She gives the Doctor a final look, smiling a little.
SHONA
Thank you, Doctor. Even after… all that… thank you.
DOCTOR
It was my pleasure. And thank you. Even in the darkest of situations, you were both incredibly brave, selfless. I'd be glad to have you aboard anytime, anywhere.
DEISHA
Can I have a go flying it?
SHONA
Inside!
Shona pushes Deisha along towards the apartment, as the Doctor returns inside the TARDIS. Shona looks back at Zach, who's staring at the TARDIS.
SHONA
You're not off already, are you?
ZACH
I… Give me one moment.
He rushes inside.
75 INT. TARDIS
He sees her darting around the console, which he takes a long look at, breathing it in.
DOCTOR
Alright, one family rescued, one maniac stopped, one universe saved! Well, not exactly stopped. I'm not sure if he escaped, but that's his trade. And… what about Adam?
ZACH
It wasn't Adam. Not really. It was a twisted… perverted version of him. Not how I wanted to remember him. Adam Ellis died October 2019. And I'm okay with that. I don't think that imposter escaped, but… maybe he did. Maybe we'll see him again.
The Doctor politely smiles.
DOCTOR
Maybe. And, I think this is yours.
She holds out a key.
ZACH
For me?
DOCTOR
Yeah! You're a full-on traveller now. Here.
He stares at the key, then shakes his head, putting his hand up in dismissal.
ZACH
No, thanks.
DOCTOR
What?
ZACH
I'm… I'm good, thanks.
The Doctor's face turns sullen.
ZACH
You know, I've loved… I've loved all of this. It's been… just the best. I've had so much fun, and this has really helped, but… I'm a father, and I need to look after her now. It's time to move on with my life, and find out what's important to me. Without Adam to support me, without monsters to distract me. Time to find out who I am.
DOCTOR
Sure.
ZACH
I mean, don't think I'm not ungrateful, thank you so much for this experience, but I can't keep dodging my responsibilities. I can save the world just as much from home as I can in a small blue box.
DOCTOR
Oh, really?
ZACH
Really. I'll make you proud, Doctor. Thank you for saving my family. Thank you for some of the best days of my life.
They smile, and hug.
DOCTOR
Thank you for the same.
He breaks, and starts heading towards the door.
ZACH
See ya, Doctor.
DOCTOR
Bye, Zach.
The door closes, and she stares at it for a few seconds, as if a little broken.
76 EXT. MARSH COURT - DAY
Zach joins Shona.
ZACH
Come on! Shall we call Ashley up?
SHONA
You're staying?
He kisses her.
ZACH
Absolutely. I'm staying. I love you so much.
SHONA
I love you too.
The TARDIS wisps away with a grand, overwhelming roar, and he looks back at it, smiling. He hesitates, his smile faltering slightly as he remembers all the fond memories he made with that small blue box; visiting the Northern Lights, the Berlin Wall, and the far future. And then he looks at his family, knowing that the adventure he's about to embark on is just as brilliant. [Track 31 ends]
