"Alright class, it's time for lunch," Korosensei said as he opened a classroom window. "I am going to hop over to South Korea for a quick bite. I will be back soon." And with that, Korosensei left, leaving behind a huge gust of wind.
It was a cold late-January afternoon, so everyone decided to have lunch inside the classroom. Some students pushed desks together, while others held their lunches & moved around the room to chat with others. They talked about random topics including upcoming graduation & their families who were coming.
Nagisa was talking with Karma about what they were thinking about their future career path, but as he was talking, he noticed a certain green haired girl putting on her coat & leaving the classroom. Confused, Nagisa turned towards Karma & said, "Sorry Karma, I will be back in a bit," excusing himself.
Outside the classroom, Kayano was walking towards the forest with her head down. The air was crisp, with a light breeze to make it seem even colder than it was.
Behind her, Nagisa was trying to catch up with her. "Kayano!" Nagisa yelled out. Kayano had stopped at the sound of her name to see who had followed her outside, surprised, but also not surprised to see it was Nagisa. "What are you doing out here Kayano?"
"Hey Nagisa," Kayano uttered, "Sorry, I just had to get out of there. I couldn't keep it in much longer."
"What are you talking about?"
"All of you talking about your families & graduation. I didn't want to stop all of you & ruin your enjoyment, but I couldn't sit there anymore," Kayano wept.
"What do you mean?"
"My sister, the only person who ever really cared about me, is gone. My Mother died shortly after my sister, & my dad wants nothing to do with me," Kayano explained. "You all have people to celebrate with, to go home to. I have no one left."
After contemplating what Kayano was saying, Nagisa finally understood what she was talking about. "Oh, Kayano, I'm sorry. I didn't even think about that," Nagisa apologized. "I know its not the same, but you still have all of us in E class."
"No offense Nagisa, but none of you really care about me the way I need," Kayano stammered.
Nagisa was taken aback by what she had just said to him. Confused, but moreso upset, he asked "What do you mean?"
Kayano sighed, "When this is all over, we are all going to go our separate ways. Odds are, I'll never see any of you ever again. None of you care about me that much. Not even you."
Nagisa gasped at what she had just said to him. He was utterly shocked by what she had just told him. "What are you talking about Kayano? Of course we care about you. Especially me"
"I'm sorry Nagisa," Kayano cried as she turned away from Nagisa, "I just can't believe you, not after everything that has happened to me!" As she ran away, Nagisa could only stand there, hurt by what she said.
It had been 2 days since Kayano & Nagisa's conversation. Neither had said a word to the other since. Kayano felt bad about how their interaction took place, but she also didn't know what else to say to Nagisa. She told him the truth & it hurt Nagisa to hear her say it.
As the bell rang to finish the end of the school day, everyone eagerly packed up their bags & began to leave. Well, almost everyone. Kayano stayed sitting in her seat, dreading her lonely walk home & empty house. She hated not having anyone to go home to, especially now that she no longer had her tentacles & desire to kill Korosensei. As she slowly started packing her things, she looked in her desk & found a note on top of her books. Kayano, meet me in the front row of the school auditorium -Nagisa.
"I suppose he wants to talk about our conversation the other day," Kayano sighed to herself. She finished packing up her things, & headed towards the school auditorium, worried about what their next interaction will lead to.
Kayano arrived at the auditorium, only to find nobody else was there yet. Puzzled, she decided to walk down to the first row of seats & sit down in the center of the row. As she looked around the large auditorium, she thought to herself, 'I figured Nagisa would have been here by now.'
As she thought about what she was going to say to Nagisa, the curtain for the stage lifted to reveal Nagisa sitting on a wooden stool, holding an acoustic guitar with a standing microphone in front of him. As Kayano sat in her seat with a puzzled look on her face, Nagisa gave her a soft, warm smile, & calmly started to play his guitar.
Here's to all the late-night stress phone calls that you picked up
Here's to all the bad decisions that you didn't judge
All the love you's and the hate you's and the secrets that you told me
Here's to everyone but mostly us
There's a couple billion people in the world
And a million other places we could be, but you're here with me
Take a moment just to take it in
'Cause every high and every low led to this
I'm just so glad you exist
Kayano clasped her hands over her mouth at what she was witnessing. Nagisa had written a song about their time in Class 3-E together & was performing it to her. 'This is why he asked me to come here.' Kayano thought to herself.
Ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh
Ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh
Hey look what a hello from a stranger turned into
Caught up in a moment like it's just us in this room
All the right words at the right time
And you know 'em 'cause you know me better than anyone else
We don't need anyone else
There's a couple billion people in the world
And a million other places we could be, but you're here with me
Take a moment just to take it in
'Cause every high and every low led to this
I'm just so glad you exist
At this point, Kayano had formed a smile under her hands that she was trying to hide from Nagisa, but was failing to do so as Nagisa could see her cheeks blush.
Ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh
Ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh
Don't you ever go, don't you ever go, don't you ever go changing
Never let me go, never let me go, never let me go, baby
Don't you ever go, don't you ever go, don't you ever go changing
Never let me go, never ever let me go, never let me go, baby
With those words, Kayano started to tear up. She always loved Nagisa & always wished he would reciprocate her feelings towards him, & now she knows he truly cares about her.
There's a couple billion people in the world
And a million other places we could be, but you're here with me
Take a moment just to take it in
'Cause every high and every low led to this
I'm just so glad you exist
Ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh
I'm glad you exist
Ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh
At the end of the song, all Kayano could do was sit & cry tears of joy at what Nagisa had done for her.
Nagisa seeing Kayano's reaction, gently leaned his guitar against the stool & walked to the edge of the stage, where he jumped down & kneeled in front of Kayano. "You have to be crazy to think none of us care about you Kayano," Nagisa said softly to her. As Kayano lifted her head & stared into his azure eyes, Nagisa caressed her cheek, "You are the greatest thing that's ever happened to me."
Hearing what Nagisa had just said, Kayano showed a slight look of confusion on her face.
"You are what keeps me going. You are the reason why I am always here. The reason why I am as strong as I am, physically & mentally. If it weren't for you, I don't know where I'd be right now," Nagisa told Kayano as he looked into her hazel eyes, gradually looking away & towards the ground. "Before I met you, I was constantly picked on, harassed, & abused. My mother made me dress & act like a girl, people would make fun of me & beat me up. I was a weak, shy, lonely person."
Kayano sadly looked down & away from Nagisa. She knew his story, how his mother never wanted a son, & how Nagisa was abused by her for not wanting to be treated as a daughter, as well as by many of his classmates & teachers for being small & feminine looking. She always pitied how his life was, & what he had to go through on a daily basis.
"I thought my life would be like that forever," Nagisa said sadly before he picked his head back up & looked at Kayano with a smile, "then you showed up."
Kayano looked back up at Nagisa with a surprised look on her face, waiting for Nagisa to explain himself.
"You showed up & started talking to me. You started hanging out with me. You treated me how I always wished I could be treated. You made me feel like I wasn't worthless. You liked me for who I was. If you think I could ever forget about everything you've done for me, you're dead wrong.
While Kayano is happy for what she did for Nagisa, she also new the truth. "But it was all a lie. I deceived you all to hide my true intentions to kill Korosensei. None of it was real. How can you care like that about a liar?" Kayano choked. She was beginning to cry until Nagisa grabbed her & hugged her.
"Your original intentions may have been, but the longer you stayed with us, the more you cared about us. You genuinely tried helping us when we needed you," Nagisa said sorrowfully. "And whenever I was in danger, you always worried for me. Your face, voice, & body language showed it every time. Someone who doesn't care about their classmates wouldn't express concern like that. You grew to reopen your feelings for us & care about people again."
All Kayano could do was hug Nagisa back. He was right, & she know it. She had grown to care about everyone in 3-E, even people like Karma, Terasaka, & Okajima; 3 people who she had no reason to care for, she now did. "I'm glad you think that way about me Nagisa," Kayano said a bit hurt, "but I don't know if I can believe you. Not after everyone else I've lost.
Nagisa slowly pulled away from the embrace of his hug to look Kayano in her eyes. "I could never lie to you," Nagisa said brushing Kayano's hair behind her ear, "you mean too much to me."
Kayano didn't know what to say, all she could do was look deep into Nagisa's eyes & know he was genuine. He wasn't just trying to make her feel better, he really means what he is saying to her.
Before Kayano could say a word to Nagisa, Nagisa slowly leaned into Kayano & kissed her. Not like the kiss when he was trying to save her, but a kiss of love & passion. A kiss that Kayano could do nothing but melt into, not that she didn't want to. 'He loves me! He truly loves me!' Kayano screamed in her head.
After kissing for what felt like hour, Nagisa finally broke the kiss, only to put his forehead against hers, "I love you too much to ever do that."
Kayano smiled hearing Nagisa say he loved her. She buried her head into Nagisa's chest & started to cry tears of joy. "You really mean it?"
"Of course, Kayano"
"Nagisa, promise me you'll never leave me. Please promise me that?" Kayano begged Nagisa.
Nagisa hugged Kayano tighter, as if he never wanted to let her go. "I will never leave you Kayano. I love you."
