A sleepy Jack Dawson had been sitting on that chair for an hour now, getting a haircut. The new branding plan for the DeWitt's Construction Company included a Forbes article on how the generous board of directors had teamed up with the RMS Titanic to offer one lucky orphan the learning experience of a lifetime. Of course, this wasn't the only company who had invested in the Royal Marine School, but it was certainly the one who (purposely) caught everyone's attention in America.
Even though the Hockley army (or money-sucking vampires, as Rose would call them) had stayed in New York, their marketing team would be in frequent contact with Cal and Ruth, and Rose of course, providing them detailed instructions on how to successfully manage their public personal image.
Upon arriving in Miami, a small team was assembled to work on the article for the magazine's next edition. Fortunately for the lamb who was about to be slaughtered, he had a friend to lean on for the day.
"Thanks again for doing this" Rose said as she brushed the excess of setting powder off the boy's tanned skin, earning a flinch each time the brush came in contact with his skin.
"No problem... I mean it's not like I had much of a choice"
"Welcome to my world. I tried my best to cover the dark circles under your eyes, what were you doing last night?"
Flashback
The trio had managed to sneak out of the school deck avoiding the hallway security cameras and taking the emergency stairs to the 9th deck, which was five decks above them. After deciding in which exhibition they would sleep in, they settled their stuff down and took a look around the Titanic museum. For practicality, they took with them just a pillow and two blankets; they'd manage.
When the hands of the clock struck twelve o'clock, Tommy decided to kick off their little illegal sleepover. As they sat on the wooden floor, he took out of his backpack an old sound recorder.
"What is that?" Fabrizio asked with curiosity as he sat closer to Tommy, inspecting his gear.
"This. Is going to tell us if there are any ghosts around. This is a professional sound recorder; it can detect ultra-low-frequency sounds down to 40 Hz"
"Why do I get the feeling you came not to study, but to hunt ghosts" Jack asked with a smirk
"Ah well boyo, I like to be prepared"
Fabrizio and Jack exchanged looks admiring their friend's commitment to their adventure, then again, he was the one who proposed it. They set the recorder and talked for what must have been an hour before falling asleep. Tommy settled under a table, using one of the blankets as a pillow meanwhile Fabrizio fell asleep on the other side of the room with the other blanket, resting his head on Jack's stomach, the blond one using the pillow properly.
A loud metal noise woke the youngest of the three, who let out a panicked scream that startled his friends.
"WHAT HAPPENED?"
"GHOST!"
Tommy didn't hesitate to reach for the video camera he had settled with the recorder.
"Calm down" Jack said as he put his hands on Fabrizio's shoulders. His attempt to calm him down had failed, as his friend was starting to hyperventilate
"No! We should not be here! Non posso credere che tu mi abbia convinto!"
"Dude, calm down. I can't understand what you're saying"
"Erano persone vere. Persone che hanno giocato con il destino e con Dio! Mia madre mi ha sempre detto di non contraddire mai le leggi dell'universo... ed eccomi qui! Alla ricerca di fantasmi. Ignorare Dio..."
"Dude! I can't understand you!"
"Shut up you two! Come here, let's watch the footage"
The night vision camera showed nothing but a hydro flask falling off the counter. Tommy was disappointed.
"See! It's nothing... let's go back to sleep"
"Nah huh. I'm going back to the cabin"
"Italian! Come on! Jack already told you it was nothing"
"Still"
"It's the ocean. The waves are pretty rough, come on, let's go outside so you can see it by yourself..."
The two of them walked out of the museum and took the opportunity to get some fresh air on deck. Inside, the oldest was determined to find something. He wouldn't be satisfied until he saw something paranormal that night. Tommy pressed play on the recorder.
The boys talking. Silence. Shapeless sound. Silence. A voice... not just one, but two! Now three. Speaking clear words with an undoubtedly English accent.
"GUYS! COME HERE! HURRY UP! LISTEN TO THIS!" The Irish fella ran as if his life depended on it to find his friends. Outside, they tried their best to distinguish the sounds from the equipment.
"That's a fart"
"Shhh! Keep listening"
"Get out" "Swim!" "They found the necklace"
Needless to say, the three of them got instant goose bumps and ran immediately to their respective cabins, not before sending Tommy back to get the rest of their stuff.
End of flashback
"Uh, nothing"
Rose instructed him to follow her up the hill of Bill Baggs Cape the where the photographer was getting ready. They settled near the lighthouse so the photo could catch the beautiful sunny ocean view.
"Okay, what do I do?"
"Turn your body facing that way and your face to me. Good, now smile"
Rose knew Adrian, the photographer, for almost a decade now. She always had a good time working with him, he made sure everyone was having fun.
"What do you think babe?"
"Oh... this was just the warmup honey. Had to get that shutter speed working, you know what i'm sayin'? Now comes the real deal" Adrian proceeded to place his camera at his eye level and get closer to snap a picture "So you guys know each other for a while?"
"We became friends on board" Jack answered
"Friends my a... Okay, that's cute" Adrian said, mumbling the first part to himself.
"Jack, did you know Rose used to eat her boogers?"
The randomness made Jack burst out laughing.
"I did not!" Rose defended herself
"Yes you did, you still do"
"Why would you throw me under the bus like that!?"
"Because he deserves to know that part about you. And watch how cute the pictures are looking so far"
"Really? You could've played music! You could've asked him to laugh, you could..."
"Actually, that's a good idea. Why don't you sing for us, sweetie?"
"What? No, you know I sing terribly..."
"Oh c'mon. What's that song you used to sing all the time? Come Josephine"
"Keep shooting 'cause I'm not singing"
"Oh c'mon Rose" Jack interfered
"No! Why would you want to hear me sing?"
"I wanna see if it's the same one I know"
"Yes Rose! Sing a bit so Jack can compare the two songs"
"Adrian. Shush."
"I won't pose until you sing" Jack teased
"What? That's not fair!"
Adrian was impressed by their small married-couple fight. He thought they were pretty adorable. "C'mon, it's just us three"
She sighed "Come Josephine in my flying machine... going up she goes, up she goes... that's it! happy?"
The boys clapped and chanted for her; she rolled her eyes but smiled in response to their praises.
"Was it the same one, Jack?" Rose questioned
"Yeah"
"Where do you know it from? Not many people listen to that song"
"I heard it... like fifteen seconds ago?"
"Oh my god! I'm going to kill you!"
She shouted running towards Jack in an attempt to fight with him. Instead, he wrapped his arms around her and lift her off the ground. Adrian kept shooting, he thought they were pretty cute together, they definitely make a good couple.
When they finished, Rose informed Jack he could keep the clothes and they headed to get some ice cream in Adrian's car. 20 minutes later, the refreshing breeze of the ocean and the sounds of the palm trees playing in the wind escorted them as they walked around the boardwalk of South Pointe Park until Adrian had to leave an hour later. He dropped them off in Little Haiti where they kept enjoying each other's company, as well as the art and culture surrounding them. Everywhere you looked was full of bright colors, each building unique and welcoming. They found a cozy restaurant where they decided to have lunch. Beautiful leaves hung on the walls and ceiling, and the sunlight managed to enlighten the whole space.
"How long have you known Adrian?"
"We went to elementary school together in Philadelphia, then his parents moved to Miami... we found each other online and decided to catch up with what was happening in each other's lives"
"That's awesome"
"Yeah... are you enjoying your day off?"
"Oh yeah... I wonder how they're doing in the water park"
"Sounds fun"
"Maybe... but i'd rather be with you"
Rose blushed "Why? I'm not nearly as interesting as you"
Jack rolled his eyes "You don't give yourself enough credit"
After having lunch, they went to Wynwood Walls. Beautiful, astonishing murals surrounded the place. The best street artists in the world shared their works here, each graffiti, as detailed as detail is, conveyed a story. Some people walked through the place looking for the perfect spot for selfies, others just stood there speechless. It was truly breathtaking.
Around the corner there was a food truck park, when the sun was starting to set, Rose got them a bunch of different snacks to try. They sat on a wooden table bench and tried everything, from sweet to spicy; they even had to get another water bottle because Rose couldn't stand the burn on her mouth. Overall, they were having the time of their life. Jack promised to take her out for a beer when it was legal to do so, and she agreed happily. In his mind, he still couldn't believe how much his life had changed in a couple of weeks, a month ago he was sleeping under a bridge, and now he was traveling the world, having the time of his life with a girl whom he lov- wait? Could he actually be in love with a girl he just met?
