Darkness… that's the first thing I remember. My bed was uncomfortable, my thin blanket scratched my skin, and it was dark. My skin was crawling, itching, like a thousand bugs infested my veins. I couldn't breathe. Everything was dark. It was so dark.

I sat up, and my lungs finally inflated with air and the burn in my chest slowly faded away. I looked down and flinched back, my head hitting the wall behind me. Through my shirt, I could see my chest faintly glowing.

Breathing erratically, I lifted the collar of my shirt and peered into the darkness. I saw my heart glowing, heard it pumping blood through my veins. Pu-pump, pu-pump, pu-pump. The glow slowly made its way through my veins, spreading to the rest of my body.

The glow traveled down my chest to my stomach, and down my legs to my feet. It traveled to my shoulders and down the veins in my arms, lighting up my wrists, and finally; my hands. I looked up. The room was faintly lit up, the corners still pitch black. I removed the scratchy blanket from my legs, swinging them off of the bed. I got up and walked towards the window in the middle of the wall. The shadows in the room shifted as I walked, the glow travelling with me.

The window frame was made out of coarse, dark wood. Reaching out to touch it, I could feel the wood splinter into my skin. The sill was big enough to sit on, jutting out from the wall. I took a seat, making sure not to lean my head back.

The night sky was blanketed in thick, billowing clouds. No stars could be seen through the mist of the clouds. I was about to go back to bed, but then I saw it. A ball of glowing light peaked through the clouds. I gasped, putting my hand up to the glass. Our glows were similar. Soft, faint, comforting.

That night, I went to sleep feeling less lonely than I ever have.

Of course, that was a while ago.
