A/N: This will be my first Evangelion story, which will be prominently focusing on two romantic ships between Asuka Langley Souryuu and Mari Illustrious Makinami, and between Rei Ayanami and Misato Katsuragi. The Evangelion fanfic will be a spinoff to my ongoing Fena anthology fanfic Karena (And Other Stories), where there were multiple segments mostly focusing on my top fan favorite Fena: Pirate Princess characters Fena Houtman and Karin, and was narrated/observed by Record of Ragnarok character Brunhilde, who is also known as The Valkyrie in that anthology. The spinoff will have fellow valkyrie character Goll, as she takes a look and narrates alternate universes focusing on the Evangelion character pairings (while Brunhilde makes a minor appearance for the start and end of the miniseries), and would also be based on The Twilight Zone. It will consist of only four chapters long with only four segments including a prologue and epilogue, and will serve as the 'launching pad' prelude to Karena (And Other Stories) Season 2. This first segment (after the prologue) is based on the doujin Apocalypse For Two by Takemiya Jin.
Disclaimer: I DON'T OWN ANYTHING. The Evangelion franchise and characters belong to its creator Hideaki Anno, as well as its respective owners and studios.
P.S.: This Evangelion anthology may take during or after the first season of the Fena: Pirate Princess anthology Karena (And Other Stories).
P.S.S.: Bold italic text are Goll's narrations specially for the anthology, like with Brunhilde for the Karena story.
In the heavenly civilized realm of Valhalla, two valkyries Goll and Brunhilde were heading off to rest as the sunset sky was slowly turning to night.
"You know, sis, after a long day of work, it's always wonderful to chillax and rest for the night ahead.", Goll explained to her elder sister Brunhilde as they went up the circular stairway.
Brunhilde said, "Your explanation seems accurate, Goll. That is why we're going to call it a day."
"I'm totally fine with that. Sis? When will I be able to observe universes like you recently have?"
"For now, I don't think you'll be ready for that right now, and I'm saying that it's not safe or anything like that. But when the time comes, you could join along, sister. You wouldn't even believe the kinds of stories I've been looking through recently. Out of all genres, I find romance to be the most passionate. One time, I've looked at this tragic tale where one of the two romantics had multiple personality disorder. It was so tragic, I had to drop out on that one two-thirds of the story through."
"Bummer... But can I just look at least one story, besides those guys from the 18th century universe? Maybe a different universe, even?"
"I'm sorry, Goll, but that may not be allowed any time soon. Do you know that I love you, sister?"
"Yes, Brunhilde..."
"I'm glad you understand.", The Valkyrie told as they approached the entrance to Brunhilde's room, "If you would want to experience a story, maybe we can do it not tonight, not tomorrow, but later on. Don't want to get your hopes down, sis. Okay?"
The lilac-haired girl disappointed, "Okay."
"Goodnight.", smiled the midnight-blue-haired girl before shutting her door, leaving Goll outside.
Goll spoke to herself softly, "Good night...", looking down as she heads back to her room.
Later on at nighttime, Goll looks up at the ceiling whilst lying down on her bed, the younger valkyrie muttering, "What if...?", sighing despondently.
Right then, she got an idea as she sat up from her bed.
A few minutes later, Goll left her room and reached Brunhilde's room. She stopped in front of the door as she reached for the doorknob, turning it slowly and opening it, not making much noise by the slight motion.
The short-haired valkyrie proceeded inside, closing the door quietly behind her, as she walked across slowly.
Brunhilde had a bigger room than Goll's, with an ancestral cathedral-esque look and a big divine dome surrounded by streams and sparks of green magic was seen above. Brunhilde's grand wide bed was seen further from the center of the room where The Valkyrie herself was sleeping on, while there was an ancient seal marking on the floor in the center was seen.
"Whoa...", amazed Goll as she looked at the center of the room when walking forward, looking at the dome above; as she walked on the seal, she questioned herself, "So this is where Brunhilde monitors the alternate universes?", as she looked at the seal below her feet; she sighed as she said, "I wish I could take a look for myself at what romantic stories from a different universe would be like..."
Just then, Goll heard the seal activate as she gasped. The environment around her started to dim as she was amazed, surprised and anxious all at the same time.
The green sparks and streams of magic are starting to manifest the gateway to the many alternate universes Goll will be looking at.
Realizing that she was about to see said universes for herself, she anticipatingly then began to narrate;
I unlock this door with the key of imagination.
Beyond there is another dimension.
A dimension of love.
A dimension of beauty.
A dimension of destiny.
I am moving into a land of fates and circumstances, of relations and ideas.
I just crossed over into...
...The Evangelion Zone.
The Evangelion Zone
Against the World
You're about to meet two happy students, Rei Ayanami and Misato Katsuragi, who carries on their chemistry a strong friendship that may almost become intimate. These two are happy girls, romantic girls, who are living through their high school lives with their fellow friends and classmates, in which they'd never forget. Rei Ayanami and Misato Katsuragi, whose discovery of a possible catastrophic prophecy is about to catapult them into the darkest corner of... The Evangelion Zone.
"What would you do if the world were to be destroyed tomorrow?", asked classmate Shinji Ikari to Rei, Misato and Kaworu Nagisa.
Rei asked, "What's that about?"
The black-haired boy said, "Haven't you heard? That prophecy they're talking about all over the web?"
"Our occult freak is at it again...", muttered Kaworu.
"What's wrong with being an occult freak, Kaworu?"
"I didn't say it was wrong, Shinji."
The blue-haired girl pondered, "Hmm... As for me, I'd stuff myself to death with egg pancakes...probably."
"Wow, that sounds totally like Kaworu.", Shinji impressed.
The light-grey-haired boy smirked, "How can you be so unswerving? Always food before romance."
"And what about you, Miss President Misato?", the black-haired boy asked their friend, who was the Student Council president of their school.
Misato heard this as she said, "Me? Well, I'd be happy...if I could just be together with the one I love.", which impresses the others, especially Rei.
Later on after school, Rei and Misato were walking home together as the former looks up her phone to see the prophecy rumor their friends mentioned earlier were on the news.
As the two stroll, the lilac-haired valkyrie Goll (who was observing/narrating the story) watches the two as she was still surprised by her surroundings and witnessing their relationship.
"Gee... It's really on the news. Future Man says.", Rei told.
The purple-haired girl Misato reacted, "Huh.", with interest.
"It also says a huge meteorite will hit Earth next week, and it carries a virus that will wipe out humanity. How scary!"
"That's funny, Rei."
"Aren't you afraid at all, Misato?"
"First off, it's obviously fake. If humanity is wiped out, how could there be any man from the future?"
"Oh! You're right!"
"Rather than such bogus prophecy, I'm more interested about what will be on next week's test. It's much more realistic."
"Oh! That's certainly important! But also... I'm really curious about who exactly is that person you love.", wonders the blue-haired girl to her close friend, "About as much as what's on the test."
Misato hesistates, "I'm not telling."
"Eh?! Why not? Come ooonnn, tell me!"
"No way."
"Is it someone I know? Who is it!"
"Geez, you're so stubborn. I promise you, Rei, I'll tell you when humanity dies out."
Five days later, the impossible happened.
Outside the school, there were ravenous zombies that were wandering, feasting on people's flesh and searching for survivors.
Indoors, Misato looks out the window and closed the curtain, "They're devouring each other..."
"Misato.", Rei said as her friend turned to face her, "Stop staring out the window."
The purple-haired girl hoped, "Yeah, but... Help might come any moment, right?"
"NO ONE WILL COME!", shouted the blue-haired student in anguish as she clutched her head in anxiety, "When was the last time you heard a police siren? Or an ambulance? Or a chopper? Or an explosion? Or people screaming?! It's been three months since it all went silent! Don't you get it?! There's definitely not a single living soul left in the whole world!"
Misato looked saddened towards her friend, reaching her hand out to fondly touch her blue hair, "It's all right. You have me here.", before she embraces her in a heartwarming hug.
"I'm sorry, Misato... Even though you have it rough too...", apologizes Rei.
The purple-haired student replied, "Don't worry... We'll be safe..."
On the very day after the meteorite fell, a certain tweet started spreading around. Attached to it was a short video of corpses reviving and attacking living people.
"Is this some kind of movie promotion?" "Cool visual effects!" "I'm bad with splatters.", people say.
No one believed it. No one took it seriously.
Be it that tweet, or the prophecy, or a threat of human extinction...
...or even their deaths.
In a week after the meteorite event, Rei and Misato were probably the only survivors from their school.
As she saw Rei peacefully sleeping later on, Misato went to the supply room where she looked around for rations.
A small amount of reserve supplies is stored in their school for emergency purposes only.
Considering the risks associated with keeping all the supplies in one place, Rei and Misato divided them and stored them in several locations.
One such location was the Student Council room.
It's been three months since the virus outbreak.
Right now, Misato is having the happiest time of her life together with the one she loves.
On the day when the zombie outbreak reached their school, Rei and Misato were hiding in the Student Council room as the former asked, "Wh- Why didn't you open the door?"
"Back in the classroom, the teacher tore out Shinji's insides and ate them, right?", Misato said, "Do you want to get eaten like that, Rei?"
The blue-haired girl replied, "No..."
"Then you understand why we can't let in anyone who might be infected. You don't right?", the purple-haired student council president inqueries, "We managed to escape before anyone else and came here without encountering anyone. But the people behind this door...you don't know who they ran into on their way here."
Rei tearfully said, "But...what about the rest of our friends who are still out there?"
"So you don't mind being eaten by friends?", warned Misato much to her friend's shock, "Look closely.", as she then opened the door a bit for Rei to see, "Are those things your friends?"
The short-haired girl watches in horror as she saw blood everywhere as the zombies were feasting on their friends' flesh, while mass hysteria ensues within the school.
I suppose those few, who came running up immediately after they locked themselves in that room, most likely weren't infected.
Still, Misato refused to save them.
Not because she was worried that her supplies would run out...
...she just wanted to be alone with Rei.
Back in the present, Misato looked at the list of rations after discovering their emergency food rations are beginning to run out, as she thought to herself reflectively, "There'll probably be no other rations left by now... I guess this may be the end..."
"Misato...", said the blue-haired student, "I'm sorry for earlier..."
The purple-haired girl happily said, "Let's get some lunch, okay?"
And then, it was lunchtime in the supply room, where they were having canned food.
"How many cans are there left?", Rei asked.
Misato asked, "12."
"What are we gonna do about food?"
"There's no other way than going out to search for it."
"That's impossible..."
"I know, right?"
Whoom, whoom, whoom, whoom...
The two girls stopped as they heard the noise.
"It's unusual to hear any noise...", supposed the blue-haired girl.
The purple-haired student council president says, "Sounds like a chopper."
Just then, they had a realization.
"A chopper?!", both surprised, as the two of them headed towards the supply room window.
Misato gladdened, "It's really a chopper!"
"Quick! Get something to signal with!", planned Rei as her friends goes to get a blanket.
Opening the window and flapping the blanket as a signal, the two yell out to get the chopper's attention...
Misato gasped awake from a nap back in the classroom, seemingly as if it was all a dream.
Sighing happily, Misato then heads to the supply room where she sat down to talk.
"So, Rei... I had a strange last night where...the end of humanity...happened...", explained Misato, "I'm so glad it was just a dream."
Shockingly, the one that Misato was talking to was an infected zombie Rei, who was aggressively trying to bite her while being held by ropes tying her hands, waist and feet that restrain her to the chair, with a bloody appearance and revealing Rei had been bitten and turned into a zombie.
Misato chuckled, "Because reality where you want me like this is much happier, Rei... Together with you...in our sweet, happy apocalypse..."
She then laughed as the zombie Rei continued its attempts to viciously bite Misato with her restraints...
