Ch 9
Zemo looked out over the battlefield and saw the Avengers, no longer fighting each other. They were united and fighting his army.
"No, this isn't how it's supposed to play out!" Zemo said.
Then Iron Man flew in with Captain America.
"I know what it's like to lose someone." Iron Man said. "I lost my parents because Bucky killed them. But it wasn't his fault. He was brainwashed. It's the same thing with your family in Sokovia. Don't go down that path. It's not gonna end well for you."
"My family is gone." Zemo replied. "Someone has to pay."
Then he charged. Zemo struck at Cap with his energy sword but Cap used his spare shield to block all the strikes before throwing it at Zemo, knocking him down. Then Iron Man swooped in and fired repulsor blasts but Zemo dodged and trapped Iron Man with an electric bola from his left arm's gauntlet launcher. Iron Man eventually freed himself and the next few minutes of the fight was a tag-team battle as Iron Man and Cap dodged Zemo's sword strikes and energy bolas before getting some hits in with repulsor blasts and shield-bashes. Then Iron Man disarmed Zemo and Cap triple-kicked him in the face, taking off his purple mask to reveal a scarred face.
"You will never win." Zemo said. "Soon I will have my revenge and you will all suffer."
"Yeah, that's not gonna happen." Iron Man said. "Don't feel like dying today."
"You're going down, Zemo." Cap added.
Zemo produced an energy whip from his right gauntlet and tied up Iron Man with it before slamming him to the ground. Then he fired his jetpack and rammed into Cap, smashing him against a wall. Zemo turned the energy whip into a longer sword and fired it at Cap. Cap spun around and kicked the sword into Zemo, who screamed as the blade slashed his chest but it didn't hit his heart somehow. Cap proceeded to beat Zemo to death until he stopped suddenly when he saw the look of terror in Zemo. Although the villain tried not to show it, it was written all over his face.
"Do it!" Zemo said. "Finish me."
Cap placed the shield onto his back.
"Maybe you haven't noticed, but I'm not like you." Cap replied.
Finally, the Avengers had put their differences aside and united together to take down Zemo and his army of Winter Soldiers. They had won.
One day later…
Zemo was in the high security prison known as the Raft. It was a floating underwater vessel somewhere in the Atlantic. Few prisoners had managed to escape from it. Thaddeus Ross came up to his cell.
"Meals at 8 and 5. Toilet privileges twice a day. Raise your voice, zap. Touch the glass, zap. Just try to step out of line. Please, step out of line, hmm?"
Zemo knew what Ross was trying to do and didn't fall for it.
"So how does it feel?" Ross asked. "To spend all that time, all that effort... to see it fail so spectacularly?"
"Did it?" Zemo asked.
He may have failed in killing the Avengers but at least one part of his plan was done. The team had been fractured, which was enough to satisfy him. For now.
Meanwhile, Tony Stark was in the new Avengers Compound, reading a letter sent from the person he'd least expected in the world right now. Steve Rogers.
Tony, I'm glad you're back at the compound. I don't like the idea of you rattling around in a mansion all by yourself.
The Avengers are yours. Maybe more so, then mine.
My faith's in people, I guess. Individuals.
And they haven't let me down.
You haven't either.
I was going to tell you about Bucky but you found out already when you went through the SHIELD files.
Now he's in Wakanda being cured of his brainwashing instead of being in the Raft.
Still, I'm sorry for not telling you earlier.
Maybe that would've stopped us from fighting each other.
Also, I really wish we agreed on the SRA, I really do.
I don't know what's going to happen in the future.
But I do know one thing...when you're ready...we'll talk.
Then Peter Parker walked up to him.
"Cap went to the Raft and there's a break-in. Should we go get him?"
"No." Stark said. "We're done fighting. Besides, you weren't destined to fight in wars. In fact, none of us were. We're destined to protect the people. And I'm fine with that."
Peter nodded with a smile.
"I guess there's some hope for the Avengers." Peter said. "Get some rest. You have a big decision to make."
Peter walked off and Stark got a text from Fury, saying that he needed his help. Stark turned on his cell phone and called Steve Rogers. The Avengers would always be together.
Epilogue
Peter was back in his Iron Spider Armor, standing ontop of a police station's roof as he watched the cops putting prisoners into police cars. Then he got a text from his apprentice.
Miles: Hey, is the convoy ready yet.
Peter: Not yet, still securing a couple of inmates. It's gonna be done soon.
Then the convoy was ready to move.
"Showtime." Iron Spider said.
He jumped off a roof, did a mid-air flip, and swung off, ready for the next mission.
