On the road to Suna
Team 7 were travelling quickly through the treetops, making their way to Suna. Kakashi still hadn't informed them about the details of the mission. Only that it was important that they move out as quickly as possible.
Naruto, still blinking the sleep out of his eyes asked "Ne, Kakashi-Sensei, why are we going to Suna? And what's with the short notice?"
"Well, you see Naruto, the reason we are going to Suna is... a secret!"
"EH?!"
"Okay not really. Reports indicate that one of Suna's most notorious Missing-nin has finally surfaced again. In their Bingo Book he's listed down as an S-rank criminal, but realistically he's an A-rank at best."
"Sensei how can someone be an S-rank criminal but only be at an average Jonin's strength?" Inquired the brain box of the group.
"The crimes this man committed were enough for the Suna hierarchy to label him an S-rank criminal. From what we know is that he went slightly insane and felt let down by the higher ups in Suna due to their reaction of the last war. So instead of assassinating any political figures and causing temporary upset, he decided to cripple the village as a whole. Rumour has it one day he walked into the desert and started slaughtering innocent farming settlements."
"Oh, and with Suna still recovering from the last great war, on top of already having very little farmable land I suppose this is why they hired outside help to do the job?"
"Exactly, most of the mission funds Suna get right now go to feeding the populace and trying to recover not only from the last war but also from this man's terrorism. He's known simply as The angry soldier in his Bingo Book listing. Apparently, he's also an asshole?" Cue eyebrow raise. 'I didn't think they'd put that into an official entry'
"Sounds like someone we know" chorused all three genin at once.
"Hmm, did you say something?" Kakashi turned his head leaking intent ominously.
"No of course not Sensei!" the three children cowered in fear of their cruel and unusual Sensei.
"Alright! Onwards we go! You may even get to see your notoriously friendly Sensei in action this time instead of being sidelines to killing some lackey" Kakashi shouted with a smile.
'Oi Sensei, that's too far' ran across the minds of the three newly minted child soldiers.
Team 7 made good progress towards Suna. At the pace they were going it would take them another day's travel to get to the hidden village in the Sand.
Kakashi abruptly halted his advance through the treetops. "alright brats, time for a rest, set up camp, traps, the usual. I'm taking first watch."
Team 7 got to making their position defendable in case of an ambush and set up their tents to sleep in. Kakashi sat up on a tree branch and summoned a few of his ninken to scour the area and ensure there was nobody following them. When they came back with nothing to report he double checked the traps that had been set and did a quick recon of the area. When he had finally finished all his checks, he summoned some shadow clones and set them at vital points around their camp. Finally, he allowed himself a cat nap, getting as much as rest as he could whilst staying alert. Never would it be said that Kakashi didn't take his job seriously, especially with his three precious genin sleeping directly beneath him.
It was a peaceful night with no attacks and Kakashi was able to quietly move the guard detail to Sasuke with no issues.
OR WAS IT?
It was.
The next day
Naruto shook Team 7 awake, taking special care to slowly and quietly wake up his Sensei, the last time he tried the flashbang approached he was nearly reunited with his parents. Everyone learned that day not to try and shock a war veteran awake. As Naruto approached him, he saw his eye flutter open and give him an intense stare.
"Pack."
"Confirmation?"
"Kushina."
"Good morning Naruto."
"Hello Sensei, it's time to move out."
"Alright, we move in 30 seconds, pack up."
Team 7 continued making their way towards Suna with little to no issues. They got past the Konoha-Suna border and immediately noticed the huge environment and climate difference.
The travel towards Suna got progressively more difficult as they lost bodily fluids and the heat started to affect them. They took a few short drink breaks to make sure none of them suffered heat stroke and also to help acclimatise them that bit better with the current environment.
By mid-day they had made it to the walls of Sunagakure. They showed the gate guardians their identification and their reason for being in Suna and moved along.
"Was that Kakashi Hatake?"
"Keep it down, you've heard enough of the rumours not to say anything."
Kakashi simply glanced over his shoulder and smiled, he couldn't get up to his usual antics in a foreign village, "Allied" or not.
As team 7 moved through the streets of Suna and made their way to Suna proper they noticed all the strange glances at them. Well, Sasuke and Sakura did, Naruto managed to ignore them because.. Well, ya know, this was an everyday occurrence for him.
"Naruto, how are you unaffected by the looks and glares we're receiving?" questioned Sakura.
"What do you mean Sakura? This is much nicer than my usual stroll through the village at home. At least these people stop staring." Naruto replied with a hop, jump and a kick.
'Huh?' went through the minds of team7's more intelligent genin. They never really paid attention to the looks Naruto received at home. Now that they thought about it, they realised that Naruto would often draw quite a negative reaction from the majority of the village when they would make their way towards the Hokage tower. Only it hadn't happened recently because they spent most of their time traversing rooftops, training, or doing missions. Kakashi was sneaky with how he made their lives easier, but he was certainly a good sensei.
The group made their way to the biggest and most central building they could see, when they reached the entrance, they showed their identification again and asked for an audience with the Kazekage to verify their mission.
Team 7 made their way to the top of the tower and were granted entry into the office of the village leader. As they stepped into the office two of the team members were growing increasingly uncomfortable with the weight of the presence of the man in front of them. Whilst Kakashi and Naruto both remained unimpressed and calm.
"So... what brings Konoha's premiere killer and his 3 kids into my office today?" The Kazekage said behind his veil.
"Good afternoon Kazekage-dono, I was informed that you have a certain pest control problem that your own shinobi couldn't take care of, so your daimyo sent the mission to Konoha to complete." Kakashi cheerfully replied.
The air grew heavier and the pressure intensified after Kakashi said this. "That damn Daimyo." mumbled the Kazekage. "Who do you think you are addressing as dono? Keep in mind that I am one of the Kage and you will address me correctly. I will not be disrespected in my own office never mind my damn village!" The dust in the office seemed to rise and golden flecks shone ominously in the air as the leader of Suna's rage made itself apparent.
"Kazekage-dono. You mentioned yourself that I am Konoha's premier killer. So please, remember who you are speaking to, and for your own sake. Drop the intent." Kakashi replied relaxed, however his body was anything but. He crouched forward slightly, like the predator he was. The air around Kakashi gained static and sparks of electricity started to zap around the room and a slight sheen started to appear around Kakashi. The air itself started to vibrate. Sasuke and Sakura were struggling to stay conscious with this massive display of power. Naruto... Naruto was relaxed as ever, but wary, this Kazekage dude seemed like he was bad for business.
"Ne Sensei... the S twins are about to pass out, if nothing is going to happen here can we go? We have a missing nin to track down."
Somehow, someway, Naruto's words cut the tension both the Kazekage and Kakashi let up with their display of power and the air in the room became breathable again.
"Tell me boy. What is your name?"
It was more of a demand than a question and Naruto looked to his sensei for advice. He mouthed 'stranger danger' to Kakashi he smirked, shook his head, and responded to the question.
"This is my charge, Uzumaki Naruto."
"An Uzumaki..." The Kazekage's eyes widened at the implications "You would dare!"
"Try it again and I promise you, you will not leave this room alive." Kakashi doubled down on his threat. Nobody would endanger his family, not again.
"Right, this conversation seems pointless, I know of the mission my daimyo sent to you, here are his last known whereabouts, do not let me see this team again until the chuunin exams. We are done here." The kazekage ground out through gritted teeth as he tossed a scroll to Kakashi.
"Thank you Kazekage-dono, may the next time we meet be on simpler terms. Let's go kids." Kakashi nonchalantly led his team out of the office as if he didn't just threaten to kill the strongest shinobi Suna had to offer.
"Let's make haste, we will be followed to the edge of their city, we are not going to give them a chance to attempt anything. We move, now."
Team 7 got out of Suna post-haste. Sasuke and Sakura still shook to their core and not wanting a meeting between two volatile S-rank ninja in their immediate future again.
A small remote farming village, outskirts of Suna
"What's that on the horizon?" said non-descript farmer #1
"Oh nooooo….. It's this fucking guy again. That soldier dude. I hope Kazekage-sama finally sent a team to deal with this weirdo. Otherwise we are boned." Said farmer #2
Both men looked slightly to the right and saw a sand cloud being formed in the distance. As it got closer they saw the silhouettes of a taller figure being followed by three shorter figures.
"Huh?" They both thought intelligently.
As the 'soldier' made their way closer to the settlement they realized that the silhouettes were going to reach them before this dude was gonna ruin their lives again.
"Hey hopefully these guys are friendly, can't be worse than whatever this soldier dude has in store for us."
"Yeah that's pretty true, This guy has been pushing our shit in for the past 2 years and nobody has even contested him. Let's hope Kazekage-sama finally listened to our distress call."
Team 7 made their way to the farming settlement and looked at what should be a land brimming with life but instead find themselves staring at a location that clearly had seen lots of action recently.
"Ne, Sensei how are these people meant to make a living if this is all they can produce?"
"That's the issue young padawan, They make what they can and send it to Suna as soon as possible. However, with the constant attacks of this missing-nin they haven't been able to build up a proper farming village as every time they try this asshole comes in here and blows up the whole town."
"Ah, I see"
Naruto had absolutely no idea what any of this meant, other than this guy was anot nice and it was their job to stop him.
The Soldier walked into the village and saw they had finally decided to send a team to intercept him. 'Hmm, what can these idiots even try against me? There is barely anyone in that shit village that can challenge me barring maybe the Kazekage, and that loser is too lazy to even try it with me, ugly ass hiding his face behind a veil.'
Let it be known that 'The Soldier' did not harbor friendly feelings towards the current sitting Kage of Suna. He felt that the guy that was supposedly the strongest in his village was too much of a coward and should have advanced the war when there was a clear advantage.
"Hoh, spiky white hair, I see the coward finally decided to hire Konoha to take care of me huh, I've heard about you Sharingan Kakashi, I gotta say, you're uglier than I thought. You and that shit Kage have the same fashion sense. Hiding your ugly ass face behind a mask. Come at me guy, I know you're only an A-rank, I'll take you any day of the week and twice on a Sunday."
The smallest of the group spoke up. "Uh… Sensei? Is this the guy you're meant to take care of? He doesn't seem like a whole lot. This guy looks even weaker than Zabuza."
The Soldier became irked at this. Weaker than Zabuza?! What does this wet behind the ears genin even know about Zabuza, Last he heard he was out gallivanting as a missing-nin trying to get some money for his shitty rebellion. The only good thing about that rebellion was their hot leader and that was on god.
Kakashi POV
'This guy is calling me ugly huh? Crazy, time to show these kids how quickly I can take care of some weak A-rank shinobi.'
"Hey Soldier-san."
"What guy?"
"Don't blink."
"Huh?"
But it was already too late. Kakashi was not in the mood to deal with pleasantries. This guy was not only getting in the way of his mission but the way he was looking at his genin put him off as well. This bastard clearly had no problem with killing kids, and while Kakashi had no real qualms with it either, these were his kids. That's where the problem lies. Don't fuck with Kakashi's precious people. Anyone that tried learned the very hard that's not what to do.
There has been an outstanding bounty on Kakashi's head in Kiri since he was 12 years old for killing those Kiri Anbu and for him knowingly targeting Kiri Jounin on missions. Kakashi made his grudge personal and well known. Going as far to send the heads of the Jonin he had killed and sending them directly to the Mizukage's office. Kakashi didn't fuck around. He had been killing since he was 6 and in the years following he had gotten very good at his job.
Kakashi was on the soldier before he had even known what was happening. There was a displacement of sand and all of a sudden Kakashi was there with a fist hurtling towards his face. The soldier managed to dodge the first swing but couldn't stop the leg following after. He took the hit across the chest and rolled backwards with it.
"Woah woah woah. Who shit in your cornflakes? Chill out guy!"
Kakashi did not 'Chill out' he wasn't even in the mood to exchange banter with this guy. Right now he was in kill mode. He used every bit of experience of his 20+ years of being a ninja and his time in the Anbu corps. He steeled his emotions and applied every bit of pressure he could whilst in his base form. This guy wasn't worth more than that. No point in wasting the chakra.
"Yo Kakashi, why don't you show me your pink-eye brother? I'm sure you need it to keep up."
The Soldier built up a wind bullet, but before he could even get it out he got hit by another cross to the chest. The wind bullet stalled in his chest and tore his esophagus to pieces.
'Oh no, he's serious.'
That was the last thing he thought before he felt a searing pain in his chest. Kakashi had put a lightning infused kunai through his chest.
"Know this Soldier-san, you weren't worth my full power, you did however make me get serious. If you hadn't threatened my genin you may have left this place alive. Any dying words?"
"….fuuuuck you puss…ssyy."
With that the scourge of Suna's farming villages died. Born an asshole and died an asshole.
"Man, this guy really was an asshole huh?" Kakashi looked back at his three charges and noticed how shocked they were. 'I guess I overdid it huh.'
"Sensei… What was that?" surprisingly it was Sakura that spoke up. All three Genin were shocked at how far their sensei would go for them. They hadn't realized his devotion to this little family of theirs until just now. As dysfunctional as it was, it was their little family. They wouldn't trade it for anything else.
Naruto had finally got the brothers and sister his heart was longing for his whole life. He hadn't been this happy ever, knowing he belonged to something was enough for him. He would die for every single one of team 7, that was a promise, believe it!
Sakura had finally gotten the siblings she had wished for since a young age, while she had her parents at home, the connection she had with her team was very different. Knowing the people around her would gladly die for her and she them was a different kind of trust.
Sasuke, Sasuke saw what Kakashi did and came to certain realisations. This team cared, and finally, finally it was worth it to open up again and allow himself to trust people. This family was different but oh so familiar. This feeling is what he had longed for, for so long. Maybe, just maybe he could open himself up again and allow himself to trust others. Kakashi had proven worthwhile and he was the happiest he had been since that night being in a team with Sakura and Naruto.
"Ne, Team 7 it's time to go back and report mission successful to the Kazekage. How anout you guys stay outside of the room this time? If he tries anything, we'll be out of Suna before anyone gets hurt okay?"
"Hai Sensei!" Three responses chorused back. Team 7 made their way back to Suna with a healthier respect for their sensei and far stronger bonds than before.
"Oh shinobi-sans thank you for dealing with this guy! He was such an asshole!"
"Don't worry about it farmer dude, It was literally no problem" Kakashi waved back. "Stay safe!"
