The group entered the cockpit of the Hurst as Sally was flying it through lightspeed. "So do we finally get to find out what this mission is about?" Tails asked but Wave hit him over the head "Sally told you. It's secret" "Isn't that everything we do?". Sally turned to him "Some things more than others. Okay, Gem, put Command through". G-merl projected a hologram of Wynmacher and Bristles surprising Sally "Senator Wynmacher?" "I wanted to explain the mission personally, Captain Acorn. There is much at stake". "How can we help?" Sonic asked, "We received your report on the apparent disappearance of the Waspnosian people. After some debate we decided to take a risk and investigate". Tails was confused "So we're looking for Wasps?" "No. You are looking for the team we already sent. We lost contact with them two cycles ago" "Do you think it was the Empire?" Sonic asked. "Unknown. Contact was lost after the team reported and energy source on the planet's surface" Bristles answered. Sally was intrigued "Energy source. When we went to Waspnosia there was nothing. No signs of life or power". Wynmacher nodded "Your primary mission is to recover our people and any intel they gathered" "Who is it we're looking for?". Fang crossed his arms "Harvey Who" "You knew about this?" Sonic asked. Fang nodded "Yeah, I did. I've known Harvey a long time and I've learned when he's concerned about something it's usually worth taking a closer look". Tails turned to Sonic "So, Harvey's worried about what we found?" "He's worried about what we didn't find" Fang answered.
Sally dropped the ship out of hyperspace and saw Waspnosia "The construction modules and debris we saw last time. It's all gone". Wave checked the scanners "Well, I'm picking up a power source soon the surface right where Command said it would be, but I can't raise Harvey on any channel. There's only static". Sonic pondered "Wasps live underground. It's possible Harvey and his people can't hear our transmission" "Let's get down there and find out" Sally said. They flew into the atmosphere and through a violent storm "Gem, stabilizers!" Sally yelled. Tex smirked "Good to be back, Fang" "Honestly? I was hoping I'd never have to come back to this dust ball". Sally landed "I had to set her down but we're close". Fang stood up "According to Command, Harvey's recon team entered a structure two klicks north of our current position" "Maybe they took shelter there" Tails suggested. Sonic pondered "It's possible. Wave, what about the power source you detected?" "Different location and close. But thanks to the storm I can't get a precise reading about where or what it is". Sally turned to her "Keep working on it. Until we know more about that power source, we'll split up into two groups. Fang, Sonic, Tails and G-merl go check out the coordinates of Harvey's last transmission". Tex was confused "What about me?" "You're staying here with us; in case the Empire comes along". Tex chuckled "So I can bust some buckets".
G-merl led Sonic, Fang and Tails out of the ship and through the storm with the three of them wearing trooper helmets "There's a temple up ahead". They entered "Harvey!? Harvey Who!? Spread out and see if you can find the entrance to the underground". Tails took off his helmet and admired the temple "Did the Wasps build this" "Oh, yes. They're cleverer than you would think, and creative. Tat doesn't mean they aren't dangerous as well". Sonic took off his helmet "So, Fang, how do you know Harvey Who?" "Oh, we go way back. I trained him and his sister, Chloe, during the Clone War. They were part of a plan to help localized militias fight for themselves against the Separatists. She… didn't make it. But he carried on and even started his own cell in Freedom Fighters after the Empire took over". Tails lifted a large rock with the Force "Hey, I found something! Looks like some kind of passage down there". Fang went over and stared at it "This must be the entrance to the tunnels. I'll bet Harvey's team is down there" "Let's take a look" Sonic said.
They wet deeper into the tunnel and saw multiple passages blocked off "Looks like this was deliberate" "Why would they do that?" Tails asked. Sonic took a deep breath "The air is still down here" "The sealed passages must be blocking the air flow. Certainly, limits our options for going forward". They followed the only tunnel they could get through and found blasters, gloves and shoes all over the ground "These look like they're from Harvey's unit" "But where are the people?" Tails asked. Sonic however was concentrating on a noise "There's something up ahead" "What is it?" "It's moving away. We should go. Something's very wrong here, we're out of our element". Tails looked sceptical "We'll just call for backup. Gem, get Sally". G-merl beeped causing Sonic to sigh "We must be too deep. The signal can't reach her" "Well, someone's down here, and I bet they know what happened. I say we go on. Fang, you're the tie breaker". G-merl beeped angrily "You don't get a vote". Fang thought to himself before "Well, if you want my opinion, I say we press on. I know Harvey would do the same for me". Sonic sighed "Okay, we'll keep going. But there's times I hate being right, and I hope this isn't one of them". They followed the trail of blasters and clothes, but they just reached a wall "I don't understand. Where would they go. It's just a dead end" "Uh, do you have to call it that" Sonic complained. They then heard a distant metal clanking and then to their surprise Egg Pawn walked around the corner "Niks!" Fang yelled. Tails and Sonic ignited their lightsabers as a Gamma walked past the Pawns "Open fire!". The Gamma advanced on them and fired, Sonic and Tails managed to deflect but were getting pushed back into the wall when suddenly a hole was blown open next to the badniks destroying most of them and then something shot the survivors. Tails then ran forward and cut the Gamma in half while it was distracted. The three of them stared at the newly made hole and out of it came Harvey Who "Harvey" Fang said. Harvey walked forward and after a second he recognised the wolf "Captain. So, you decided to come to Waspnosia after all" "Yeah. To rescue you". Harvey chuckled "Is that what's happening". The two shook hands "It's goof to see you alive, old friend. I want you to meet Sonic and Tails". G-merl beeped, "Oh, right, and G-merl". Harvey stared at Sonic and Tails "So, you're Shinobi?" "We do our best" "Never thought I'd meet another Shinobi, much less two". Sonic nodded "The galaxy is full of surprises" "Including what's happening here on Waspnosia" "You found something?" Fang asked.
Wave and Tex were with struggle walking through the storm "Any luck?" they heard Sally asked them over commlink. "We're closing in on the power source. It's just up ahead" "Whatever it is, it's big" Tex said. Wave turned to him "How do you know that?". Tex gestured to a large metal machine near them "I don't believe it. Sally, it's a shield generator. Looks like military grade". Wave opened up a panel "Looks fully operational. This is what's responsible for those power readings" "Can you extract the deflector core?". Tex examined the inside "Won't be easy in this storm, but we can do it" "Good. Gizoid Base could really use a shield. Get to work. I'll contact Sonic". Wave and Sonic got to work "What do you think this thing was protecting? You don't just find one of these lying around" "Good point. Work fast!".
Fang was speaking to Harvey "A shield generator?" "Separatist model. About as old as you, Fang. But someone's kept it operational been maintaining it" "The badniks?" Tails asked. Fang rolled his eyes and kicked a Pawn at his feet "These old niks? Not a chance. Technology is too sophisticated. Besides, by the look of them, someone's been maintaining them too". Harvey thought for a moment "It must have been a bug. He got my unit in the same trap he got you guys. I was the only survivor" "Yeah, the more I hear the more I don't like this. We should go back and report to Sally" Sonic said. He started walking away but "Back? No. Wait! You can't. That bug is the key to finding out what's going on here. Don't you understand what's at stake? We know the Empire wiped out the entire population of this planet. We need to find out why. The Empire is hiding something, something important and that bug… knows what it is". Tails nodded "He's right, Sonic" "I agree" Fang said. Sonic sighed "Fine. We can say and search for the bug, but we have to warn Sally about the badniks first". Harvey nodded "I can help you with that. This way". Harvey led them deeper into the tunnel "I've been able to map a fair amount of these tunnels" "I feel a breeze" Sonic said. He kept walking but when Harvey stopped him "Whoa. Watch your step, Master Shinobi. It's a long way down. Tails looked over Sonic's shoulder and saw that there was a large drop with what was left of a bridge at the bottom. "The bug severed the bridge, so I've never been able to get across" Harvey said. They looked up and saw it led all the way to the surface "You'll be able to contact your ship from here". Sonic activated his commlink "Naka-One to Hurst. Do you copy?" "Naka-One, I read you. Where have you been, Sonic? What's going on?" "We found Harvey, but his team is gone. Sally, listen to me. There are operational badniks here. Some patrol the surface. Better keep an eye out". Sally gasped "Wave and Tex are out there extracting the core of a shield generator" "You have to warn them. Harvey says once the storm dies down, the badniks will be coming".
Wave and Tex were still working on the core when "Naka-Four, Naka-Five. Get back to the Hurst immediately" "Affirmative, Naka-Two. We've got the deflector core and we're" "Leave it if you have to. There are badniks in the area. I don't know how many". The storm started to stop as Tex stopped what he was doing "Badniks? I don't see any badniks. I just see bunch of rocks". "I'm not sure those are rocks" Wave said as she walked towards one of them and brushed off the sand revealing metal underneath "Gammas!". Tex unloaded the core and took out his sword "I'll make short work of these tin cans" "No. There's too many, Tex. If you destroy one the others will wake up. I'd use the Hurst's cannons, but the storm clogged them up". Tex examined the placement of the Gammas "There spread out enough. I guess we can just sneak past them on foot" "No. We can't just leave the core" "Are you crazy. You heard Sally, if we bump into one of those things, they'll all wake up". Wave pondered "Ok, ok. So, we'll take our time, and we'll go carefully" "Are you sure it's not too big to make it through?" "You made it through". They started pushing the core through the Gamma minefield.
The others were still waiting at the edge of the bridge when "Alright, boys. I'm calling it. Get back to the surface before these badniks or anything else wakes up" "Copy that, Sally". Harvey shook his head "Now wait a minute. We're not going anywhere" "We need to go help our friends" Tails said. "Want to help your friends? Then find out who's controlling those badniks". Sonic stopped and listened "G-merl, light up the tunnel on the other side of the chasm. G-merl did so and they saw a scared young wasp on the other side "I knew it!" Harvey said. The wasp then took out a button and pressed it.
The Gammas all activated, Wave and Tex stopped "Sally, the badniks are waking up" "Hurry back to the ship. I'll contact Sonic".
Sonic's commlink activated "Sonic, we've got a problem. The badniks have been activated". They saw the wasp then run down the tunnel "Wave and Tex are in trouble. Let's go!". Harvey stopped them "We're not leaving without that bug" "He's not as important as our friends" Tails told him. Harvey glared at him "You'll never reach them in time. We capture the bug; we turn off the badniks and we save your friends". Sonic got on the commlink "What do you think, Sally?" "It's a good plan. Get the bug" "Alright. Tails, I'm sending you over there on three". Tails nodded and ran back down the tunnel "One. Two. Three!". Tails ran and jumped over the chasm, Sonic caught him with the Force and threw him over to the other side. "G-merl, go with him!", G-merl flew over and followed Tails down the tunnel. Harvey stepped forward "I don't think I can get that far" "I have a better idea".
Tex and Wave took out their weapons ready to fight but the latter then had an idea. She turned to the core and opened a panel, "What're you doing. We don't have an array" "We don't need one. I have something". She opened her wispon and took out the indigo vial and placed it inside a slot. The Gammas fired on them, but the core then projected an indigo shield around the both of them. Tex smirked "Good job" "It won't last long. That vial isn't supposed to make shields this large.
After listening to Sonic's plan Harvey and Fang shot at a bridge higher up in the chasm. It fell down and Sonic caught it with the Force and held it between them and the other side "Get across!". Harvey and Fang ran across and once reaching the other side the bridge fell "What about Sonic?" Harvey asked. Sonic however casually jumped across to them "Come on. We gotta get moving" "I always forget they can do that". Fang shrugged "I've seen better" "I heard that!" Sonic yelled.
Tails and G-merl were chasing the wasp through the tunnels, he eventually caught up and tackled him knocking the remote out of his hand. The two fought trying to reach it but just before the wasp could the remote was suddenly shot.
"The shields failing!" Wave yelled as the shield disappeared, but the Gammas suddenly shut down. Tex sighed in relief "Ah. Mind if we don't do that again?". Wave to the vial out of the core and put it back into her wispon.
Harvey stepped closer to the wasp as it whimpered in fear. Tails got between them "It's over". Harvey grabbed the wasp by the throat and pinned him against the wall "Now you're gonna tell us what's going on here. What were you building for the Empire?". The wasp didn't say anything but looked terrified.
Harvey stared at the wasp with rage in his eyes "Tell me what I want to know, bug. What Imperial secret was worth the lives of my team, my friends". All the wasp did was buzz, "Easy, Harvey. I don't think he speaks basic" Tails told him. Fang stepped forward "Harvey, he's unarmed" "You know better than anyone, we can't underestimate these things". He dropped the wasp who curled up against the wall "I think he's afraid" Tails said. He slowly stepped closer to the wasp "It's okay. We won't hurt you. I'm Tails. What's your name?". The wasp just buzzed "Yeah, I think I'm just gonna call ya Buzzer". He gestured for Buzzer to come forward which he slowly did "Buzzer, can you tell us what the Empire was doing here?". The wasp kneeled down and drew in the sand an egg shape in it before drawing two circles inside. Fang examined it trying to figure out what it meant but Harvey was getting angry "I need more than some scratches in the dirt". G-merl then beeped "Gem picked up an energy reading in the direction Buzzer was going. Down below somewhere" "Probably a trap. Another den of badniks" Harvey said dismissively". Sonic turned his head to him "Or the answers we're looking for". Fang shrugged "We came all this way". Harvey restrained Buzzers hands causing him to shout and struggle "What're you doing?" Tails said, "Tracker. I don't want it running off again". They walked past Tails who noticed that Harvey dropped a small holo-unit. He picked it up accidently activating it and saw a projection of a white female bird with brown hair. He caught up with the others "Hey, Harvey. You dropped this". Harvey turned around and eyes opened wide once seeing the projection "Where'd you get that? Give it here!" he angrily took it, "I'm sorry. Is that your sister". Harvey stared at the projection with sadness in his eyes "Chloe. This is all I have left of her" he walked away. Fang came to Tails and put his hand on his shoulder reassuringly "Chloe was killed in the Clone War by a Separatist gunship. The Wasps built those gunships".
A Scarship flew above the planet. On the bridge a female chameleon captain was waiting "I'm sure the proximity sensor was triggered by a meteor again. Scan the quarantine zone for intruders and let's be on our way. I don't want to waste any more time on this desolate rock than I have to". The console in front of an officer started beeping "Captain, I'm detecting life on the surface" "Most likely scavengers. Deploy patrol". The Scarship released two TIE bombers.
Wave and Tex got the core onboard the Hurst when they heard Sally "Wave, Tex, I need you up here!" "What now?" Tex said irritated. They ran into the cockpit "We've got an Imperial cruiser. They haven't detected us yet. We need to get the others back here now, but I can't raise their commlinks. They must have gone back into the tunnels for some reason". Tex took out a transmitter "I can take this into the cave, think I can contact them form there?" "Try it, but don't stray too far. Wave, you finish locking down the deflector core".
The group entered a small cave with random junk around it "This is where you live?" Tails asked Buzzer, "Looks like a workshop" Harvey said. Fang examined the tools "He's been maintaining that shield generator and those badniks" "Badniks he used to ambush us". Tails stared sympathetically at Buzzer "Harvey, all his people were killed. We came here with weapons. Can you blame him for protecting himself?" "What else is he protecting". Fang then saw that there was a transmitter "Still looks functional. Sonic, G-merl, give me a hand" he sat down and tried to power it up. Harvey started throwing things aside "Got a lot of stuff here". Buzzer tried to stop him before drawing the egg shape again "No, no, no! That tells me nothing!" he started throwing more things looking for something "Harvey, don't. This is his home". Fang tired to stop him "That may be the only answer you're going to get out of him" "He's hiding something". Harvey then saw Buzzer reaching for a box "What'd you think you're doing" he threw him aside and took something out of the box which Fang recognised it "A ring shot". Harvey scoffed "Still think the bug's our friend? What else you got there?". Buzzer then charged past him and tried to take something out of another box. Harvey pulled him back and saw that he was holding an egg. Tails watched him try to keep it from Harvey "He's just been defending it. That's what this is all about. That must be what he was trying to draw".
Fang kneeled downed slowly and examined the egg "It looks like a queen egg. It's very rare". Sonic sighed "I understand now. That could be the last Waspnosian egg left". They then heard Tex's voice over the transmitter "Naka-Four to Naka-One. Can you read me?". Sonic sat down at the transmitter "Naka-Four, we read you" "Sonic? Alright! I got ya. Hold on. Let me patch you through to Sally". Sonic then heard Sally "Naka-One, do you read?" "Loud and clear. We've found something" "So did we. The Empire is here! We need you back so we can go. You too, Naka-Four" "On my way". Sonic sighed "The tunnel we came in collapsed. We'll have to find another way out" "What about that giant chasm we crossed? It goes to the surface. Maybe we can find a way up" Fag asked. Harvey grabbed Buzzer "This thing comes with us, for interrogation". Tails got in his way "What about the egg? If it is a queen, then it's vital to the survival of his whole race" "Whatever that thing knows is vital to our survival". Sonic crossed his arms "Tails is right. They don't deserve extinction" "The mission takes priority". Fang sighed "In frustration "Harvey, we had this argument back at command. Your mission was to find out what happened here" "Yeah, and I'm gonna make this bug tell me exactly that". He tried to get past Tails, but he didn't move "No. We can't risk the egg". Harvey rolled his eyes "I don't know if you realize, kid, but we are at war, and war is loss!". Sonic got between them "Okay, but we're taking Buzzer and the egg to our base. After we question him, we'll bring him home". Harvey reluctantly nodded in agreement.
Sally was watching Tex running towards the Hurst but suddenly an alarm went off. She checked the scanner and saw the two bombers "We're in trouble". The bombs hit the ship "Shields just took a major hit".
The Imperial captain was examining a hologram of the Hurst "That ship is a Freedom Fighter vessel. If we destroy that ship, it would mean a promotion for all of us".
"Come on, Tex, move it! Wave, I've cleared out the nose gun. I need you on it, now!" Sally ordered. The moment Tex got on board the ship Sally took off. The bombs started another run, but Wave managed to shoot them down. Sally started to pursue the bomber as Tex got on the top gun and managed to shoot the wind of it causing it to crash. Sally got on the commlink "Naka-One, we took out the Empire's first wave, but they'll send more" "You better come and get us. Do you still have my signal?". Sally checked the scanner "Yeah, I think I see where you're headed. Gonna be a tight fit". She flew to the chasm and slowly lowered the Hurst inside.
"All these tunnels look the same" Fang said getting frustrated, "Gem, knows what he's doing. He's made a map". Buzzer then grabbed Tails' arm and tried to pull him through a different passage "Hey, maybe Buzzer knows a shortcut". Harvey just pushed Buzzer forward "We follow the gizoid". They made it back to the chasm where the Hurst was waiting and they happily boarded. They entered the common room "Harvey Who, this is Sally, Wave and Tex" Sonic said. Harvey bowed his head to Sally "Dawn leader, I'm honoured to meet you. Your actions have not gone unnoticed among the ranks of other Freedom Fighters" "Neither have yours". The three of them then noticed Buzzer "You found a local?" "It's okay. He's Buzzer" "Is he the only one?" Sally asked. Tails shrugged "We think so". Sally sighed "Well, that complicates things" "He's our only clue to what the Imperials did here. I wanna take him with us" Harvey said. Sally raised her eyebrows "What does Buzzer want to do". Buzzer buzzed to Tails "I think he wants us to go deeper into the planet" "That's too bad, because we already have an agreement. Don't we Shinobi?" Harvey said glancing at Sonic. Sonic sighed "We agreed that we would take Buzzer back to our base for questioning" "Sonic, can I have a word with you?" Sally said.
The two left the room "What's wrong?" "Harvey. How much do you know about him?" "Nothing really. Just what Fang told us. You have a problem with him?". Sally crossed her arms looking concerned "We need to be careful. From what I hear, Harvey's got a reputation for being a little extreme" "Considering his past, can't say I blame him" "Leave him alone!". They opened the door and Tails was pushed to them. They then saw Harvey punching Buzzer in the face "What're you doing!?" Sally yelled. Tex growled but Fang held him back. Harvey turned to Sally "I'm taking your shuttle and the bug" "You're not taking the Sneak anywhere" Wave told him. Sonic stepped forward "Harvey, we had a deal. We'll question Buzzer at Gizoid Base" "Your soft, Shinobi. We lost the last war because of you. I won't lose this one". Fang tried to restrain him "Easy, soldier. You're not in command here". Harvey threw him aside and kicked Buzzer forward "Move it, bug!". Buzzer cried and he dropped the egg which Harvey picked up and pointed a pistol at "I don't want to do this, but you leave me no choice. Let us pass, or I destroy the egg". Sonic put his hands up "Harvey, you don't have to do this". Sally stepped forward "I know you believe you're doing the right thing, but-" "The Empire shows no mercy. Neither can we". Tails slowly advanced on him "Your wrong" "What would you know, kid!?" "I thought that. I thought the only way to win was to be like them, but I was wrong. You destroy that egg; you're just helping the Empire".
Fang stared at Harvey sympathetically "Harvey, you know what it's like to lose family. Don't kill his" "I lost my planet to the Empire. I lost my sister to the Separatists. I'm fighting so no one else has to. I won't apologise for how I do it". Tails glared at him "Then you're no better than the Empire", Harvey stared at him in surprise. Before anything else could be said G-merl ran in "They found us" Wave said. Harvey started at Buzzer "We have to leave" "No! We can't take him with us. Buzzer belongs here" "Hey, if we all get captured, that'll end the debate real quick. Let's go!" Sally yelled. They ran to the cockpit and saw troopers coming down on jet packs "We've got rocket troopers incoming! Tails, I need you guys up top now. Harvey, can I count on you?". Harvey smirked "In a fight against the Empire? Anytime". He casually handed the egg back to Buzzer, Sally nodded "Good. Get up there with the others and buy me some time". Wave turned to her "What's your plan?" "Well, we can't go up, so we gotta go down. Looks like you get your way, Buzzer".
Sonic, Tails, Tex and Harvey got on the roof of the Hurst as the rocket troopers fired down on them. Sonic and Tails gave them cover as Tex and Harvey shot up at them. The ship began to descend as the troopers landed on the Hurst. Fang used the roof gun to shoot one of them saving Harvey who nodded to him. Tex killed two more and the remaining troopers flew back up. Wave jumped out of the Hurst and flew up causing Tails too smirk "They're in trouble now". She flew up to one platform. She turned her wispon ivory and took out to trooper in front of her with the electric whips. She then turned her wispon red and shot a fire ball at the remaining two blowing them up. She jumped to the wall with her wispon turning pink. A wheel of spikes were released and she slowly dropped down the wall and landed in front of an amazed Tails "I want one of those" "I know".
Later they were waiting in the common room when Harvey entered "We can't stay down here forever" "How far down are we?" Tails asked. G-merl beeped to Wave "According to Gem, not much further. And he's picking up something on his scanner" "Why don't we check it out?" Tails said. Harvey shook his head "Every second we spend down here seals our fate". Sally then entered "We've come this far. If Buzzer thinks this is the way to go, I want to see why. They landed at the bottom of the chasm and exited the ship. Harvey turned on a torch and saw two metal spheres with the Imperial symbol. Wave recognised them "These canisters are from the weapons division" "They're for poison gas". Fang sighed "I guess we know what happened to his people". Harvey turned to Buzzer who was looking down at the ground humming what he guessed was a song for mourning. Harvey took a step closer to him causing Buzzer to back away in fear "Tails is right. The wasp belongs here". He removed the restrains "These canisters are all we need to prove that the Empire wiped out its people. Everyone loses family in war, even the enemy. The Wasps deserve the same chance to rebuild that we do". Tails affectionately nudged Buzzer "Go on, buddy. You're free". Buzzer went over to a pile of rock and moved them to reveal another tunnel "I don't think this is the bottom" "Maybe there are other survivors". Fang chuckled "they sure are a resourceful species". Buzzer took the egg and climbed down. Sally walked out of the ship "Let's load some of these canisters as proof for the Senate". They eventually loaded two of them onto the Hurst when they suddenly heard blaster fire and the tunnel started collapsing "Everyone, inside now!". Sally stared taking the ship off "I'm not getting buried down here". They stared flying up while Tex and Tails were using the turrets to destroy debris. Wave checked the scanner "The cruiser is directly over our exit. It's blocking our escape!". Sally smirked "The captain is showing their inexperience. All hands, fire forward batteries! Wave, fire proton torpedoes". They saw the cruiser overhead and fired everything they had splitting it I half. They flew right through however the cannisters got hit off the magnet, but the ship managed to escape.
Later in the common room they were talking to a hologram of Wynmacher and Bristles "Unfortunately, all we were able to recover were images of the poison canisters used by the Empire against the Wasps". Wynmacher sighed in disappointment "The images are frightening but will not be enough to convince the Senate of the Empire's atrocities. They may however help us recruit more systems to our cause".
