One minute he was in the lab, the next minute he was on a hill. He didn't know how he got there or why he was there, but now that he was away from Jack, he could finally let his guard down and relax a bit. He sat on the grass, looking up at the sky seeing the clouds and the moon which was still in sight. He just sat and tried to tune out all the noise so he could think. This proved difficult as not even five minutes later, someone wanted to talk to him.
"Heya dipstick, how's it hangin?" He decided to ignore it. If she didn't get a response she might go away.
"Yo dipstick!" He just had to pretend she wasn't there.
"Oi, dipstick, I'm talking to you!" Just tune it out.
"Jesus Christ, HEY KID!"
"What the hell do you want, Ember?" He turned his head around, looked up, and glared at her. When she saw his bruised and bleeding face she did a double take, then schooled her expression and pretended she didn't notice. Sadly, Ember is a terrible actor.
"Jeez kid, way to be snappy. I just wanted to pop by, see how you're doing. Maybe fight a little." She sounded way too casual. She floated down to the ground and touched down on the grass soundlessly before shoving her hands in her pockets and leaning her weight to one side.
Danny glared at her before turning his head back around. "I'm not in the mood."
Ember did another double take, but this time she didn't hide her surprise. "Wait seriously? You're out of the house for the first time in like, forever, and you don't want to fight? Who are you and what have you done to Danny?" she shifted her expression to a grin and chuckled before floating in front of Danny and drifting upside down. "That better not be Amorpho in there."
Danny huffed before turning away from her, crossing his arms on top of his knees, resting his chin on his arms, and scowling. "I just don't feel like fighting okay."
Ember turned herself back right side up. "Okay, now I know something's up. That old man of yours would never in a million years let you out of that hellhole you call a house and if you were to escape on your own you would do something for your obsession." She touched down to the ground again before walking in front of Danny. " Now I don't really know what counts as heroic these days, but I'm pretty sure this," She gestured at him sitting on the ground. "isn't it."
She stood in front of him for a minute before standing next to him and plopping herself down on the ground to mimic his position, staring straight ahead. She waited, then Danny sighed and replied. "I got in an argument with Jack."
She raised an eyebrow and looked towards him. "So that's what happened. I was wondering why you looked like you lost a fight with a wood chipper." She grinned a bit and chuckled, trying to relieve the tension. Danny didn't react. Ember's grin fell and she resumed staring forward.
"How bad was it?"
Danny looked down, then mumbled, "I, I told him it was his fault Mom and Jazz died, he tried to end me."
Ember's eyes widened, but she didn't change her position. "Holy shit."
After a minute she lifted her arms from their place on her knees. She placed one on the ground to prop her up, and scratched her head with the other. She extended one of her legs straight in front of her and looked down. "That's, wow. You're definitely not going back anytime soon."
Ember then put her other arm on the ground, extended her other leg and turned her head to the sky before letting out a deep exhale. After a second, she realized something and her eyes widened. She whipped her head towards Danny and blurted, "You aren't thinking of going back, right?"
Danny shifted uncomfortably. "Danny, you need to tell me you aren't going back." Ember demanded.
Danny sighed and actually looked at Ember for the first time in the entire conversation before moving an arm off his knees to rub the back of his neck. "He's my dad. I, I shouldn't have said those things. I need to apologize and-"
"No you don't." Ember cut him off. "If you go back he'll end you, like, actually end you. You have nothing to apologize about. Stop being so reckless for once and think about your own safety." Danny put his arm back on his knees and once again rested his chin on his arms. It was quiet for a minute. The only sounds being the chirping from the last cicadas of summer and some angry squirrel chattering and screeching at a cat that got too close. The moon was no longer visible in the sky.
"I don't want to stay here anymore."
Ember shuffled closer to Danny, then laid an arm around him. Danny responded by leaning against her. After a while, Ember spoke. "Now that you're done with this town, what's next? You gonna cross over to the dark side?" She asked jokingly, glancing towards him.
Danny chuckled against her. "Tried that once already, didn't quite like it."
Ember's smile morphed into a full out grin. "Wait, really? Mr. Little Goody Two Shoes?"
"Guess it's just not my thing."
They sat there in comfortable silence for a while before Ember remembered the seriousness of the situation. Her grin fell and she looked at Danny in concern. "So, what was your back up plan?"
Danny looked confused. "For what?"
"You know," Ember scratched her head at the base of her ponytail. "for if you needed to jump ship."
Danny looked down. "Oh, I never really-"
Ember moved her arm from around Danny's shoulders and held her palm out in front of him. "Give me your phone."
"What?"
"Your phone, give it."
Danny hesitantly fished his phone out of his jacket pocket and offered it to Ember who swiped it out of his hand and immediately started fiddling with it.
"Password?"
"Oh, uh, 090802."
She messed with it for about a minute before offering it back with a grin. Danny tentatively took the phone and looked at the screen. His eyes began to water.
"My contact info. In case you ever need a place to stay." Ember explained before Danny crashed into her with a hug. Once she got over the shock, she hugged back. "Okay babypop, it's really no big deal. Besides," she grabbed his head in one arm and gave him a noogie, gentle enough to not disturb his injuries. "I could get used to having a little brother around. Even if you are a little bit of a stinker."
Danny laughed at that.
The hug lasted for a while longer, then they just sat next to each other, enjoying each other's company before a black car appeared at the bottom of the hill. Ember didn't want to be seen by any humans, so her face fell upon seeing the car. She put on a grin and ruffled Danny's hair before standing up. "Okay dorkwad, that's my cue, gotta jet. Feel free to call anytime, bye." She shot up into the air then disappeared.
Danny stayed sitting on the hill after she left. He waited until Sam and Dean were at the top of the hill before standing up and walking towards them.
"Thank you, you know, for stopping him."
Dean grinned then replied, "No need to. Any sane person would have done the same."
Danny chuckled "Yeah, well, they didn't. So, thanks." An uncomfortable silence rang out until Sam decided to break it.
"Have you got anywhere to stay?"
Danny looked down and started playing with his hoodie string. "I think so."
"What do you mean you think so?"
"I, someone just offered me a place to stay, but, I don't know." He dropped his hoodie string and rubbed the back of his neck.
"That blue chick with the weird hair?" Dean asked. Sam glared at him to which he responded with a shrug.
Sam let out a large exhale before asking, "Do you trust her?"
"Yeah."
"Think you'd be happy living with her?"
"Yeah."
"So, what's the problem?"
Danny fidgeted, grabbed his hoodie string again and looked to the side. "It's in the Infinite Realms. If I go, then I'm leaving the human realm to fend for itself. I can't do that." The brothers obviously didn't know what he meant by that, but they didn't ask.
"But if you stay, you'll be fending for yourself." Dean reasoned.
"I-" Dean cut him off.
"Sometimes it's okay to prioritize your own safety. And can't you come back here anytime you need?"
Danny's eyes widened as if he hadn't thought of that. "Yeah, I guess. I could use natural portals, those pop up everywhere."
"So, do you have a place to stay?" Sam reiterated.
"Yeah." Danny smiled. It was quiet for a bit before Dean raised a finger in a 'just a second' gesture.
"Wait here a minute, I'll be right back."
He ran down the hill to the impala, grabbed something, messed with it, then ran back. He handed the object in his hand to Danny. It was a piece of paper with two ten digit numbers on them. "Here's our phone numbers Daniel. In case you ever need help."
Danny smiled and looked at them. "Thanks. And my name, i-it's Danny."
He talked to the brothers for a little longer then turned invisible. The Winchester brothers went to their car and drove away. Once they were gone he pulled his phone out of his pocket, went to his contact list, and pressed the newest one.
"Hey Ember, you got an extra room?"
