I don't own Avatar the Legend of Korra.
Chapter 1
Earth... Fire... Air... Water. Kyoshi bends earth and punches it to the left. The camera cuts to the tight. Roku strikes left and right, fire bursting from his hands. We cut back to the left to find an adult Aang, his jaw trimmed with a dark beard. He dances and kicks at the stage center. We cut upwards. Korra sloppily waterbenders, soaking the camera.
When I was a boy, my father, Avatar Aang, told me the story of how he and his friends heroically ended the Hundred Year War.
It shows the ink pictures of the original Avatar team. Sokka brandishes his space swords, Suki is dressed in her Kyoshi Warrior uniform, Toph is earthbending, Katara is waterbending, Zuko is firebending, and Aang is airbending.
Avatar Aang and Firelord Zuko transformed the Fire Nation colonies into the United Republic of Nations, a society where benders and non-benders from all over the world could live and thrive together in peace and harmony. They named the capital of this great land "Republic City".
A standard Avatar world map appears. The camera zooms in, tilting and turning, and the map becomes partly three-dimensional with regards to the mountains and volcanos. The camera approaches a spot in the Earth Kingdom's continental northwest. The screen whites out again, as if the camera is passing through clouds. When it comes through the other side, the view is one of a flies overshot of Republic City. The camera can see the whole width of the sprawling city. Then the camera shots into the waters of Yue Bay, before coming up for a shot of the city's skyline.
Avatar Aang accomplished many remarkable things in his life, but sadly his time in this world came to an end. And like the cycle of the seasons, the cycle of the Avatar began anew.
The camera races towards the skyline, only to veer off to the left, turning around to approach Aang's giant memorial statue. The camera keeps moving but slows for a moment to linger on Aang's face. It shoots up vertically into a cloud-filed sky, finally settling on a shot of the blazing sun.
Book 1: Air
Welcome to Republic City
Tenzin is flying his family to see Gran-Gran Katara and Avatar Korra. Their eldest daughter Fayon is quite a progeny and mature child of her age. She is sixteen years old.
You can say she is a handsome woman.
Fayon is the eldest daughter of Tenzin and Pema. She is slightly different appearance in her family, but her air bending abilities proved she is the granddaughter of Avatar Aang.
She kept watching over her younger sibling while she let her mother take ease since she is pregnant for the fifth time. Long dark eyelashes, grayish curly hair, but add braid with ribbons, pearls, single bonnet string. She is even taller than many girls around her age. She has a traditional airhead tattoo on her forehead, hands, legs to feet.
Fayon meditate while she felt the cold air coming. Ikki and Meelo were playfully chasing each other.
Jinora was more studies type since Fayon was the best example to learn everything from books of anything.
Ikki repeated like "Are we there?" Which their father replied, "No."
Ikki kept repeating it. Fayon answered instead, "No."
So, hours later that was how Ikki repeated it while Fayon finally answered, "Yes." It's amazing how Fayon guesses it right every time she closes her eyes.
Fayon looked at the southern pole. 'I wonder if this Avatar is ready?'
At sunset, Katara and Korra, watched as a sky bison landed in the courtyard. As they approached, they could hear Tenzin's youngest daughter, Ikki repeatedly asking if they were there yet. Which Fayon was sure that she had answer Ikki already or was she doing this to annoy something. And strangely enough, a little boy was chewing on the man's head. Tenzin announcing that they had arrived Ikki and her older sister Jinora happily rode down the bison's tail on-air scooters while he simply chooses to step down calmly.
"Hello, Mother" Tenzin greets, Fayon is behind to help their mother, his younger daughters on both sides of him while his son, Meelo has moved from chewing on his head to pulling his ears. "I cannot tell you how happy I am to see you. Please, help me."
Laughing at her son's desperate plea Katara happily lifts Meelo off his father's shoulders. Not recognizing the woman, he begins to squirm demanding the "strange woman" unhand him until Tenzin informs him that Katara was his grandmother. In a surprising display Meelo nimbly pushes himself out of his grandmother's arms and over her head before running off to play in the snow.
"It's so good to see you all," said Katara smiling lovingly.
"Gran-Gran, I've been reading all about your old adventures," Jinora said in awe. "I've been dying to ask you: What happened to Zuko's mom?"
"Well, Jinora, it's an incredible tale…" to her surprise Katara found herself interrupted by a bouncing Ikki, speaking a mile a minute asking a series of questions. But Katara wasn't entirely sure what her youngest granddaughter was saying anymore, leaving Jinora to lower her head in shame. As his daughters were occupied with his mother, Tenzin noticed his heavily pregnant wife, Pema sliding down their sky bison's tail and rushed to help her. Despite Fayon is helping their mother.
"Tenzin, stop doting on me. I'm not helpless, I'm just pregnant." Pema chided. But Tenzin insisted on staying close, lovingly placing his hand along with Pema on her protruding belly.
Approaching her daughter-in-law and oldest granddaughter. Fayon bowed and said, "Thank you for having us here."
Katara commented, "My, this can't be Fayon. Look how you've grown." Fayon is taller then Katara now.
Katara gave both of them, a welcoming hug commenting that the baby was strong much to the couples' delight.
Though Pema was slightly less happy to hear the baby was likely to be another air-bender as if making her point, Meelo chose that moment to display his "snow bending" by air blasting snow in his mother's face.
Fayon told her mother, "Sorry, mom, but you are stuck being the mother of airbenders."
Pema groaned, "Yuppie for me." Fayon flew with her air to get the rest of their coats and blankets.
"Were Tenzin and his siblings this crazy when they were kids?" With a nostalgic look, Katara replied that Bumi and Kya were rather rambunctious as children, while Tenzin was rather serious.
"Mother, please" he pouted but his mood perked up once he noticed the patiently waiting of Korra. Tenzin called Korra over he was pleased to see that she had grown up strong and healthy.
"Master Tenzin, I'm so glad you're here. I can't wait to get started." Korra said excitedly. But from the frown on Tenzin's face, it is bad news.
"Yes well…" Tenzin started nervously as he didn't want to disappoint the girl.
"You're going to have to tell her some time" Pema prodded. Tenzin looked at Fayon when she came back to forcibly put coats around her younger siblings.
"Fayon…" Tenzin pleaded.
"Rip it off like a poison two-headed snake out of a man's arm." Tenzin looked at her and think, 'In other words, you are leaving me to face the Avatar alone.'
"Tell me what?" Korra asked sadly. But it was Katara who put it together.
"You aren't staying, are you?" she asked though she already knew the answer.
"I'm afraid not" Tenzin sighed, he hated disappointing his mother. "We're only visiting for the night. Then I have to return to Republic City."
"But ... no, you're supposed to move here. You're supposed to teach me." Korra said disappointedly.
"I'm sorry, Korra. Your air-bending training is going to have to wait."
Moving the conversation inside the compound's dining hall where everyone began eating. It wasn't long into the meal that Korra asked how long she would have to wait before she could begin training.
"So how long until you can teach me air-bending? A week? A month?" Korra has to know if there is a chance to leave for Republic city.
"It could be much longer" Tenzin admitted. "I have a responsibility to Republic City. I am one of its leaders, and the situation there is very unstable right now."
"But you also have a responsibility to teach me," Korra said defiantly. "Believe me I'd be happy to find another air-bending master but there aren't any. We're stuck with each other."
"I wish there was another way." Suddenly a light bulb clicked on in Korra's head as she proposed the option of allowing her to travel to Republic city and train with Tenzin there.
"That won't work," Fayon bluntly said. "If there was another reason to say, a good timing. This is not it."
Fayon chews her food.
The young Airbender knew the real dealings with Republic City, but her father is persistent in keeping the Avatar in the dark until things clear off.
In her opinion, the world needs the Avatar again since her grandfather and Firelord Zuko worked hard to keep the city standing for all nations to come.
"An excellent point, Miss Fayon." The White Lotus leader spoke out against it, saying that Avatar Aang tasked them with keeping Korra safe as she mastered the elements.
"I get that, but I don't think keeping me locked up in this compound like a prisoner is what he had in mind," Korra argued.
"I know this is difficult to accept," Tenzin said sympathetically. "But it's not the right time for you to come to the city."
That did not sit well for the Avatar.
Now the Nomad family needs to return empty-handed.
Fayon went back on oogi with a sleepy Meelo in her arms. The rest of the family is already there.
"It seems he found another hideout to sleep in," Fayon whispers mom as she passed onto her side. Meelo seems to be in a tantrum phase thinking he could stay with Gran-Gran and Avatar Korra by finding a place to sleep and they would be forgotten to find him.
Back at the Air Temple in Republic City, Fayon was simply reading her books while listening to the radio.
"I was blue, just as blue as I could be, so blue…. Ev'ry day was a cloudy day for me, that's true… Then good luck came a-knocking at my door… Skies were gray, but they're not gray anymore…. CZZZHHH! We interrupted this music program by breaking news… Triple Threat Triad was apprehended by some vigilante…wait! Hold your rhinos it is the Avatar who had to stop the gang of Triple Threat! I repeated it looks like we have an avatar in our beloved…
SWOOSH!
Fayon air scooter out of their library towards to the where her family main eating room.
Pema was about to question, "Where's Fayon?" The wind blows that announced her arrival.
"Mom where's dad?!"
Pema was surprised but knows that her daughter doesn't barge in without a good reason.
"He is at the council meeting."
Fayon went to the phone and quickly dialed it. Everyone is looked at Fayon to see what's going on.
"Hello, what can I…?"
"Give me Council member Tenzin."
"I am sorry, but he is at the meeting…"
"It is of utmost importance he comes to answer this phone. It is Fayon his daughter and it regards the police report."
"Just a minute."
"Hello, this is Tenzin."
"Dad, get to the police headquarters. Now."
"What? Fayon? Why-who has?"
"It's Korra, dad. She has involved herself with Rebulic City crimes."
"Korra is Here!?"
"Yep and you have to get down there now. Auntie Lin is going to fry her alive."
"I'm on my way."
Fayon hangs up the phone. She sighs as she had a feeling this Avatar will be nothing more but a pain in her behind.
"Of all the Avatar's we had to get is the most stubborn and arrogant one." Fayon walked back to the main room to eat.
A slot on the far side of the wall opened up revealing a police officer drawing the attention of the occupants of the room. "Chief," The man addressed. "Councilman Tenzin is here." He informed her.
Lin let out a tired sigh at the news. "Let him in." She instructed as calmly as she could as she stood from the table to face the door behind her.
The door slowly slid open revealing Tenzin a bald man with a blue arrow tattooed on his head, with a beard and mustache, and wearing yellow-orange and red robes typical to airbenders.
As the man walked into the room, he attempted to appear composed but anyone who knew the man could tell he was disgruntled and barely keeping up appearances.
"Tenzin," Korra bean with a sheepish smile on her face. "Sorry... I got a little sidetracked on my way to see you." She apologized attempting to make light of the situation.
Tenzin's eyebrow started to twitch repeatedly a clear indication of how annoyed he was by Korra's greeting. Despite his annoyance, Tenzin stifled it to the best of his abilities as he took a deep breath and greeted Lin pleasantly. "Lin, you are looking radiant as usual." He complimented the woman. This had Korra confused.
"Cut the garbage, Tenzin." Lin retorted austerely, answering Korra's question.
"Why is the Avatar in Republic City? I thought you were supposed to be moving down to the South Pole to train her?" She questioned the man before a stern look shifted into a glare.
Tenzin brushed off Lin's rebuttal to his comment simply enough having dealt with it for several years now, but he was brought up short at her final question and the accusation it carried leaving him spluttering for an explanation.
"Uh, yes, well." Tenzin sputtered a bit. "I received an urgent summons from the council that pulled me away." He tried to explain but Lin was not satisfied by it. Tenzin coughed into his hand to regain his composure and press ahead.
"As to the other matter, my relocation has been temporarily delayed," Tenzin stated seriously his mind briefly flashing to all the problems currently facing Republic City before continuing. "The Avatar, on the other hand, will be heading back to the South Pole immediately, where she will stay put." He finished directing the last bit of his declaration specifically towards Korra.
"But!" Korra tried to protest but a look stopped her before she could get a word in edgewise.
"If," Tenzin began cutting Korra off. "You would be so kind as to drop the charges against Korra, I will take full responsibility for today's regrettable events and cover all the damages," Tenzin promised.
For a few seconds, Lin looked at the pair as if weighing her options but after a few more seconds of deliberation before letting out a breath and unlocking their handcuffs with a flippant wave of her hand.
"Fine." Lin relented. "I'll have to have one of my men make sure the damages have been removed, but get her out of my city." She all but ordered Tenzin firmly.
Tenzin took that chance to beat a hasty retreat. "Always a pleasure, Lin." He said somewhat hurriedly turning around walking out. "Let's go Korra, " Korra didn't hesitate to follow after Tenzin, but not without keeping her eyes on Lin. Making eye contact with the Avatar, Ling gestured that she would be keeping her eyes on her, which Korra returned.
"Korra." Tenzin groaned at the irresponsible that the young avatar had made.
"Hey, it's not my fault you see what happened was," She was cut off.
"It's bad enough that Fayon had to cut my meeting short by phone call and told me that you are close to going to prison." Tenzin nearly yelled at Korra.
"Wait how does she know that I was here?" Korra questioned Tenzin since Fayon doesn't look like a talkative person or warmest type.
"The whole Republic City heard about you in the radio programs." He dreaded that now everyone is hearing the news that the Avatar is in the city. "Now Korra while I am glad that you are alright. We should be talking about how you decided to sneak yourself to Republic City and what arrangements need to be made to return you to the South Pole."
Korra grew worried at Tenzin's intentions. "Tenzin, please, don't send me back home." Korra pleaded.
"You blatantly disobeyed my wishes and the orders of the White Lotus." Tenzin reiterated.
Despite the anger that was apparent on Tenzin Korra refused to back down. "Katara agreed with me that I should come," Korra told the man. "She said my destiny is in Republic City."
Tenzin's entire head turned a bright red at the mention of Katara, to the point that had he been a fire bender. Korra was sure that either steam or actual flames would be coming off of him.
"Don't bring my mother into this!" The man ordered loudly. Korra made a surrendering hand sighs up.
"Look," Korra began. "I can't wait any longer to finish my training. Being cooped up and hidden away from the world isn't helping me become a better Avatar." She argued before continuing, speaking far more compassionately than before. Tenzin stares at Korra carefully while stroking his beard willing to at the very least hear her out. "I saw a lot of the city today, and it's totally out of whack. I understand now why you need to stay. Republic City does need you, but it needs me too."
"Excuse me miss?" An officer grab holds of Naga the Polar-bear dog. "Is this one yours?"
Naga gave the officer a big lovable lick that slurps away his hat and made a spiky slide-up hair. The Officer is not happy about this.
Tenzin, Korra, and Naga met up with Fayon outside of the police headquarters.
"Father," Fayon greeted him. Tenzin nodded gratitude to his oldest daughter. Leave it to her to be dependable for anything that could go wrong.
"Avatar Korra, anymore damages that we should fund more or less?" Fayon scantily questioned her which Korra did not approve that, and she just glared at her.
Fayon expression had not shown any signs of flinch or fear.
"Wow, you sure scare anyone do you?" That just made Korra pissed off. Tenzin sighs as he knew that his daughter was testing Korra's patient and limits.
He could tell that Fayon is not impressed by Korra's raw display.
"Enough," He ordered. "It's been a long day so let's just go home."
Hours later the sun began to set as Tenzin, Fayon, Korra, and Naga are on board a small wooden ship heading toward Air Temple Island. The ship sailed close by Aang Memorial Island as Tenzin looked up at the statue of his father his expression mournful, his mind briefly filled with thoughts of how much he missed his father before they returned to the present wondering how he might have dealt with the situation.
Fayon walked up to the man his gaze also focused on the statue of his grandfather, wishing she could have known the man and not just the legend, a somber expression on her face.
"You know, despite the damage that she causes today. She has a point."
Tenzin's expression looked startled.
"What are talking about?"
"Korra, and Republic City. Grampa Aang had only managed to mend few damages that were done by the Fire nations from a hundred years of war with them, but it took him few more years when Earth nations and water tribes make peace with each other. The Avatar is to maintain balance to the world, but Republic City is torn into so many pieces. Maybe Gran-gran is right that we need the Avatar more than ever." Fayon gave her opinion of Korra.
Shortly after the ship docked at Air Temple Island as the last few rays of sunlight set across the horizon. Already their waiting for them was a larger steamer ship with members of the White Lotus that were tasked to take Korra back to the South Pole.
Fayon felt bad for Korra, but what can she do? Her father and White Lotus are dead set on keeping Korra at the South Pole.
Korra looked at the ship resignedly, briefly looking back at Fayon and Tenzin, before she started walking to the ship with Naga beside her.
A couple of gliders swept down from above with three children Jinora, Ikki, and Meelo with Meelo being carried piggyback by Jinora.
"Korra!" The three kids cheered each one rushing to hug the Avatar.
"Are you coming to live with us on the island?" Ikki asked excitedly.
Korra looked apologetic as she kneeled before the three children. "No, I'm sorry Ikki," Korra answered sadly, causing Ikki to groan in disappointment. "I have to go home now." She told them.
"Hey," Fayon called out to his siblings drawing their attention to her.
They are shooting off of Korra and latching onto their big sister instead.
"Can't you convince Korra to stay?" Jinora asked Fayon.
"Please~?" Ikki pleaded.
" Sorry, I tried my part. Plus, it's not up to me." Fayon told them.
"Talk to dad, maybe he will listen to you guys too," Fayon said pointing to their father who was standing beside them. With a simple gesture, she signaled his sisters to try and convince Tenzin.
With impeccable nods of their heads, the two girls zipped towards their father each latching onto one of his legs and looking up at the man with big puppy dog eyes. Meelo moved to follow his sisters.
But Fayon grabs Meelo in her arms. Her brother shouted, "Hey!"
"Not you Meelo." Fayon hissed out, getting a sheepish grin from the boy. Knowing her brother, he would go way overboard into getting what he wanted.
Tenzin looked down at his daughters his already shaky will faltering even more so as he stared into his eyes. "Please can Korra stay?" Ikki asked her father mustering up every ounce of cuteness that she possessed.
Whatever resolve Tenzin possessed completely shattered, wrapped around his daughters' fingers as he was. He knew for a fact that it was Fayon who started it out and now taught her sisters to do that.
"Wait!" Tenzin called after Korra, stopping the Avatar before she reached the ship as she looked at him with renewed hope.
Tenzin walked to Korra, after shaking his daughters off his legs and stared at her calmly. "Both you and Fayon were right." He admitted.
"I have done my best to guide Republic City towards the dream my father had for it, but you are right. It has fallen out of balance since he passed. I thought I should put off your training in order to uphold his legacy, but you are his legacy. You may stay and train airbending here with me. Republic City needs its Avatar once again." Tenzin decided to place a hand on Korra's shoulder.
Korra stared at Tenzin for a moment stunned before what he was saying completely registered in her mind. A large smile spread across Korra's face before she pulled Tenzin into a quick hug. "Yes! Thank you! You're the best!" Korra told the man happily. Soon enough Korra released her hold of Tenzin before turning towards the others, the kids cheering in happiness at their father change in mind and scooping the kids up in a hug the lot of them laughing happily. Korra didn't stop there though as she quickly made her way to Fayon. "Did you mean that I am not a hopeless cause?" Korra asked joyfully.
"Yes. After all, you still get training to do." Fayon bowed to Avatar Korra.
But happy Korra decided to pull Fayon into a big group hug. Effectively squishing her siblings between the two. Not that they seemed to mind as they continued to laugh happily. Fayon blushed a bit since she had not expected that to happen. She was schooled to be formal but never had closes friends to hug.
Off to the side, Tenzin had a small smile on his face as he watched the scene. While he was happy by the way things turned out he couldn't help but imagine what kind of hell he had unleashed on both himself and the city by allowing Fayon and Korra to be nearby of one another.
Lin already didn't like the girl he could only imagine how she would react because of his decision. 'I'm going to regret this.' Tenzin thought to himself with a heavy sigh.
The next day Korra stood in front of City Hall on a stage behind a podium as a large crowd gathered to get their first glimpse of their new Avatar. With Korra now staying in Republic City it was decided that she would give a short conference where she said a few words and answered some questions.
"Hello, I'm Korra, your new Avatar," Korra said into the microphones set out in front of her.
Fayon sat on the edge of a nearby building. "Good luck, Avatar Korra." She grin but turned grim when she saw the newspaper of the Equalist Protester doing chaos and protest against all benders. The pictured photo showing their mask leader.
Fayon's eyes sharpened as she looked at the photo then back to Korra. "Only you can stop this."
