*Slaps writer's block with a metal paddle* Get outta here you good for nuthin' nuisance! AHEM, sorry about that, folks. Just putting that pesky writer's block firmly back in its place. I would also like to apologise for this taking so long. On top of Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin coming out, I got sucked into No Man's Sky and have already pumped over 100hrs into it.

Now I know I said in the last update that chapter 7 was already written BUT I came to the decision a little bit ago to just smack it onto the end of this chapter leaving actual chapter 7 for the events following.

Also a quick wee little note on the pronunciation of Aiden's name coz there's two ways. The pronunciation I use is eye-den rather than ay-den. Just felt I needed to clear that up :P

If ya'll would like to see artwork of the characters from this story and others, hit up my deviantart where I'm uploading all the fan stuff I'm doing not just for my own stories, but for others as well. I recently did the cover art for Julia Fernandez Hiwatari's The Choice (If you haven't read it already, the heck have you been doing?! Get over there!) And I'm about to upload s'more later today. Over dinner that night it became clear the out of country family members would be staying for 3 weeks unless they got called home by work or some other urgent matter. The boy accompanying Ivan was his son, Nevan. Unlike his redheaded cousin he was open minded and surprisingly affectionate towards the relatives he'd never known. Nevan wasn't an only child, his little sister remaining at home with their mother so they could have better "quality time" with their same sex parent. Viktor wouldn't admit it openly, but he envied kids who were able to indulge in such a luxury having been denied his father's time for as long as he could remember. Saoirse felt similarly because despite Tanya always being around, the gold digger had wanted nothing to do with her daughter once she was off her breast.

Xakyr understood to some degree that his cousin didn't have a mother figure, showing just how different he was from his brother by offering to share his mom with her. This then brought to life the announcement that Yuriy and Elektra were engaged and had in fact been dating for about 5 years. The only reason she wasn't at the house in March was because her job called the sporty blonde out of town. Elektra being a fitness instructor wasn't surprising; she just looked the type from body to dress sense.

Zephyr didn't leave until Saoirse had been tucked in to bed around 8pm purely at her insistence he and Aiden stay to kiss her goodnight. Sergei couldn't help feeling a little anxious having Kai's big brother around, constantly fearing the law enforcing uncle would just up and disappear one day without a word to anybody or worse; die in the line of duty. Whether he wanted to admit it or not, Zephyr was a trouble magnet, always had been. Before leaving, an arrangement was made for Aiden to spend some time after school at Hiwatari Manor…and Evelyn too.

Getting Gou packed off to school on Monday was near impossible. He simply couldn't stomach the idea of being near Brooklyn regardless of his family's soothing. Sergei had to carry him out the door it was that bad! And Gou wasn't the only one reluctant to leave home; Saoirse wanted to spend more time with her uncles and cousins. Fortunately it only took some encouragement from Yuriy and a big hug off of Xakyr to get her going. Sergei couldn't recall the last time he'd had such trouble getting his nephews and niece to school, collapsing against the now closed front door. Yuriy couldn't help but chuckle and shake his head a little; slightly resisting his son tugging him back towards the sitting room where Kai was waiting for them. He seemed in brighter spirits today, allowing Raisa to play with his fingers. Once Sergei bundled up his frazzled nerves, everyone moved out into the back garden to soak up some sun…and get Kai on his feet.

A feeling of horror had washed over the loyal butler Sunday morning when he found his master trying to stand up, almost falling and hurting himself in the process. Sergei gave Kai the mother of all bollockings for his carelessness, softening afterwards while telling him to ask for help next time. Elektra was all for lending a hand and not just with physio once Iorek gave the all clear over the phone, thanking her lucky stars that the paraplegic father wasn't a picky eater unless presented with spicy food. He could barely stand the smell never mind taste. But put him in front of fish or beef and he became a bottomless pit. Sweet treats weren't something he was keen on either, preferring savoury snacks. Sergei entrusted Kai to Yuriy and Ivan so that Elektra could take him shopping for all the ingredients for Kai's new diet and possibly the whole household. Not that the family ate unhealthily but some areas certainly needed improvement. On top of that, she encouraged him to support the smaller grocery stores to build connections with their community.

Midway through the week Gou was sat in class struggling to focus on his maths work, thoughts occupied by a certain ginger across the room. The equation assigned by his least favourite teacher danced tauntingly across a square-lined page. A loud slap to his right fixed everything in place, startled eyes snapping towards the source. It wasn't spoken, but Gou knew the threat of being sent to the principal's office loomed near if he didn't get to work. Yet there was also concern in the teacher's eyes for their pupil. Sharply the end of class bell trilled, sending the youths towards their next lesson. For Gou, this was P.E. Perhaps working up a sweat would do him some good?

Since meeting them, he'd realised both Angel and Aiden were in his group alongside Brooklyn; both blondes seemingly treated like a form of outcast as they always ended up paired together for two-person activities. Today, Max decided it was high time that changed; having Gou face off against Angel in a friendly game of tennis. Poor Aiden found himself in Brooklyn's court without mercy. If Gou was being honest, he much preferred badminton. At least then he wouldn't be afraid of his head getting knocked off. For all his quietness in other classrooms, Angel was a demon on the court. Apparently he took it easy on Aiden who currently struggled to score a single point over his opponent. Gou wasn't sure how, but he managed to tie against the husky eyed blonde, distracted from him by a commotion to the left.

"Maybe try being less of a coward next time and perhaps you'll actually get somewhere."

Angel was by Aiden's side before Max could even twitch, leering up at Brooklyn angrily. Could he not see the shy boy was down in the dumps enough without being berated for his lack of confidence? Gou would've been content to let Angel handle the situation but what Brooklyn said while he was leading Aiden away pushed all the wrong buttons.

"Teach that worm to man up while you're at it, freak."

Gasps of shock echoed around the hall as a hard fist sent Brooklyn careening into the nearest wall.

If there was one thing Gou wouldn't stand for, it was his cousin being bullied. Sure he might not plan on giving affection to the brown skinned teen but that didn't mean somebody making snide comments at him was going to slide. On top of that, he'd been in Aiden's shoes and understood how badly it hurt to be attacked verbally by other kids. Much as Max knew it was his job to break up any fights, he felt the lesson might be learned better from somebody else, watching to see what Brooklyn's love interest would do.

"The fuck is wrong with you?!"

"I could ask you the same thing!" Gou roared, tightly grasping the corners of Brooklyn's shirt. "Perhaps if you took the time to help Aiden do better instead of berate him for having self-esteem troubles he wouldn't be so damn shy! How would you like it if your roles were reversed?!"

Brooklyn didn't respond, unable to even picture Aiden saying anything to hurt somebody. But what if the timid teen had turned out like his dad? Gou waited a couple minutes and when the dashing redhead still didn't respond, he went back on the attack.

"Yeah that's what I thought. I'm honestly disappointed in you, Brooklyn. I'd hoped you were different to the other guys after the way you stood up to Rodney and Vincent. But here you are turning into them now they're gone! This is the only warning I'm going to give; stay the fuck away from my cousin. Harass him again, and I'll do more than bruise your chin. That's a promise. Don't mistake my quietness for pacifism."

Nobody could believe their eyes and ears, shocked beyond words at how quickly Gou turned from a quiet misfit into a defensive lion. With Brooklyn dressed down, Gou found himself concerned with how Aiden was holding up. He wasn't hunting after his cousin for long, finding him curled into a ball of depression with Angel providing soothing back rubs. If Gou really thought about it, there was nothing he could see on the surface that would make Angel seem like a social outcast, wondering why the Cornish blonde was alienated from their fellow students.

It took a lot of convincing to get Aiden back in the gym but Angel managed. Gou's warning clearly didn't stick, Brooklyn batting the ball back at Aiden's head seemingly on purpose. With barely a second to spare, Gou put himself in the line of fire, racket raised as a shield. There was so much force behind the hollow sphere it didn't take much effort to send it flying back across the court where it struck Brooklyn dead between the eyes. And if that wasn't bad enough, the handsome ginger took a second punch to the face, this one catching his left eye.

'Bull's-eye, bitch. The next one goes below the belt, jackass.'

While wordless, Gou's newest threat certainly seemed to cross over the net. Come lunch time, Viktor saw clear as day that something had ruffled Gou's feathers but knew better than to ask what happened. The biggest giveaway was that his sibling avoided the dinner hall, preferring to have his meal outside today at one of the many picnic benches around the school yard. Gou wasn't the only one dodging the crowd, Aiden wandering somewhat aimlessly by himself. It seemed almost strange to see him without his fellow blonde, unnatural even. Viktor honestly had to wonder if the pair were dating; neither teen appearing interested in girls even a little.

Hell would freeze over before Gou's little brother allowed their cousin to fly solo and he was off the bench before Gou could stop him, dragging Aiden by the wrist to sit with them regardless of the taller boy resisting. It wasn't that Aiden disliked his relatives; he just didn't mix well with people. But spending break with family was better than waiting in solitude for the bell to ring. Something else Viktor found bizarre was Aiden not hanging out with Max's sons. They were his friends weren't they? This confusion broadcast itself across a mildly tanned face, answered unexpectedly by a quiet voice.

"Their group doesn't like me. It's that simple. I've been shunned by other kids my entire life so it doesn't bother me anymore."

"But why? And you shouldn't have to get used to treatment like that, it isn't fair."

"Because I'm different."

Aiden shut down after that, unwilling to discuss the matter further. Viktor still couldn't understand why his dark skinned cousin was cast aside by other kids. Why should him being a different colour even matter? He'd bet his every penny that Rodney had something to do with Aiden's forced isolation. Did Zephyr know what his only child was going through? From the little Viktor had seen, his uncle was a very protective father and would smash more than a few heads to keep his son safe. If Zephyr had indeed been alerted to Aiden's struggles surely something must be getting done? But then Viktor remembered that Rodney and Vincent were the worst kind of bullies who continued harassing their victims no matter how many times teachers might reprimand them.

The end of the day couldn't come soon enough, Gou having had about all he could take of being in Brooklyn's presence. Viktor wondered how long his brother was going to keep flip-flopping with their former hero, curious as to how the redhead had gotten three bruises on his face. He caught sight of Aiden just outside the gates, seemingly waiting for something or someone. His mind made up, Viktor strode over to him with purpose. By the time Aiden realised somebody was approaching him a pair of arms had wrapped tightly around his waist yet the hold was in no way painful. It was…comforting. He merely looked at the embrace's initiator in confusion, Viktor's head resting slightly against his cheek.

"We may not have known each other for very long, but we're here for you Aiden. Even if Gou doesn't show it I know he cares. From now on, you come sit with us during break. Nobody should have to suffer a life of loneliness just because some jealous punk doesn't like them."

"But you don't even know me…"

Viktor's features sharpened, hands developing a firm, supportive grip on Aiden's shoulders. "You're my cousin, Aiden. And family sticks together, for better or worse. Whether I know you as a person is irrelevant. You're not going to lose us, I promise. I at the least am in this thing for the long haul."

By the weekend things between Gou and Brooklyn hadn't improved much, avoiding one another where possible. Kai on the other hand was making progress in leaps and bounds thanks to Elektra's coaching as well as the endless support from Yuriy, Ivan and the kids. While his fear of deep water wasn't entirely gone, he no longer fought against being carried into the pool for hydrotherapy. Evelyn assisted where she could, determined to make Aiden's uncle see she meant no harm. Saoirse was a huge help in that regard, eagerly getting to know the woman who had saved her uncle's life.

Sergei decided it would be good to spend some time at the beach on Sunday, sun high in the sky. An invitation had been extended to Zephyr but he had to work, sending Aiden and Evelyn along without him. A lot of other families had the same idea, spread out along the sand beneath the burning sun. Kai hung out on Yuriy's back watching Sergei setting out several towels for everyone to sit on, the sight still somewhat strange to him as was his offspring in beachwear. Viktor and Gou continued to be clear opposites; the younger brother shamelessly standing tall in only a pair of swimming trunks while his older sibling refused to take off his sleeveless top around dozens of people. Raisa and Saoirse were both in one-piece swimsuits beneath thin dresses.

It had taken much comforting and encouragement to get the scarred 10 year old into both garments, very conscious about how her skin now looked no thanks to Rodney's harmful prank. Elektra managed to convince Kai's daughter that she was beautiful regardless of the warped scars, that true beauty is found within a person, not their exterior. As someone also with a visible mark, Evelyn had chipped in to help bolster Saoirse's confidence. The icing on the cake was Xakyr remarking that she looked very pretty in her flowery pink summer dress, going the extra mile by planting a kiss on her cheek. Sergei had never seen Saoirse go so red in the face before and he'd be damned if she didn't end up dating Yuriy's youngest in a few years.

For a while the mixed family relaxed in each other's company; Kai watching as the kids all occupied themselves in varying ways. Viktor lay sunbathing off to one side with Nevan, Gou found the most shaded place he could to try and keep cool, Raziel was doing goodness knows what at the rear of the adults and Xakyr helped the sisters to make some sandcastles. Aiden kept to himself as well, unmoving from Evelyn's side as she got to know Elektra better. Sergei kept Rover close, not wanting to risk the misjudged pooch running off and causing trouble. It pained him to keep the canine muzzled unless he needed to eat.

Vivian spawned out of nowhere and ambushed Saoirse from behind for a cuddle, Raul very hot on his daughter's heels metaphorically and physically; crimson orbs devouring every inch of his browning skin but mostly the torso. Venomous growling alerted the handsome server to Yuriy's protective gaze, wisely taking a step back from the kids. Saoirse was having none of her uncle's bad attitude, slapping a hand over his mouth while telling him he was being a bad boy. The look on Yuriy's face was priceless. Even Aiden chuckled at it a little. Raul merely shook his head, grinning from ear to ear.

"Goodness me, the boys are going to have to watch you young lady. Sergei, could I trouble you guys to watch Vivi for a little bit? There's something I gotta do real quick."

"Raul, you don't even have to ask."

"Well I like to make sure we're not intruding. Besides, you guys are spending time with old friends and it'd be rude of me to just ditch Vivi on you. I'll be back soon sweetie. Be a good girl and no fighting over the boys."

Raul was of course referring to Xakyr. His daughter had taken quite a shine to him even though he couldn't understand a word of English. Just as suddenly as he'd arrived, Raul vanished into the ocean of bodies, Sergei not failing to notice the almost heartbroken look on Kai's face watching him disappear. Not even Raisa could distract him, tugging somewhat desperately on his arm for attention.

All the way over the far side of the beach, Zephyr was just applying a fresh coat of sun cream to his bare arms, face and neck. When he'd told Kai about having to work, it was with the impression he'd be on patrol duty, dumped at the beach instead on a motorized trike with a sleeveless diving suit under his shorts and police vest and sturdy trainers took the place of heavy duty boots. Zephyr didn't need telling why he'd been given beach duty; his boss knew he absolutely hated the heat. It was done in jest, he was sure, but sitting beneath the beating sun was absolute torture. Dark lensed sunglasses did little to protect his eyes from the harmful rays trying to blind him.

To make matters worse, there were countless dogs at the beach and the last thing he needed was to be chased by a rapid pack of family pets. Citizens greeted him as he rolled around, happy to see the town's favourite sergeant out and about. Zephyr often forgot how much the people of Gorran adored him and all he'd done since moving in 20 years ago. He wasn't popular enough for tourists to want his autograph though and that suited him fine. Being treated as a celebrity wasn't something he liked. Eventually Zephyr's aimless cruising led him to the spot Sergei and co were set up; reaching for his water bottle once the vehicle was stationary. Yuriy in particular found the sight of him sweating buckets absolutely hilarious.

"Oh ha-ha, very funny. Laugh it up all you like ice cube, because I'm not the only one who's melting!"

And Zephyr wasn't wrong, everyone except Aiden, Evelyn, Vivi and Elektra dripping with sweat. He flopped back across his seat, grumbling about the Chief being a sadistic asshole breathing heavily. Casting his eyes atop the nearby wall, Zephyr saw several of his colleagues in similar gear to him they just weren't in diving suits. Reluctantly he went to see what they wanted, prepared to endure them poking fun at him and his intolerance to heat. Since it was a nice day, the Chief had sent out several groups as part of a community bonding programme.

The CBP as it was dubbed had been one of the first things Zephyr and Holly worked towards upon being transferred from Liskeard. They'd done something similar at their old precinct and it was very well received by the general public. Some of Zephyr's friends had helped get it running smoothly and he could only hope they'd kept it going in his absence. He saw an opportunity for some brotherly bonding, agreeing to join his colleagues in a game of volleyball against some of the local youngsters. The only real issue was Kai still being unable to walk properly, Zephyr quickly conjuring a solution.

He'd never been sure why exactly, but he always kept a pair of stirrups in the car. Maybe it was just in case Merida's chair broke and she needed carrying? Either way, they were perfect for the job, both footholds attached to Zephyr's belt. Now all he'd need was a way to keep Kai secure on his back. Sergei couldn't say he liked the look on a reddened face as Zephyr approached. Kai on the other hand eagerly hugged Zephyr's neck when he bent down.

"What are you up to now blondie?"

"Oh how cold of you Sergei. I merely want to steal my baby brother for a little bit. As part of a scheme I set up with Holly, some of my colleagues are here to build a healthy relationship with the townsfolk. Today's activity is a friendly game of volleyball with the young 'uns and I'd much like for Kai to come with me."

Sergei was understandably nervous about his master getting involved with something that could hurt him but Kai was all for it, already trying to climb on Zephyr's back without his special harness.

"Well I'll daresay I've lost. Very well, but you'd better make sure he comes back in one piece Varskovitz."

"Naturally. Good grief kiddo I can't remember the last time you were this eager to climb on me. Get your harness on first you little bugger otherwise I could risk dropping you."

Kai was all strapped up in record time, Zephyr carrying him with startling ease over to his compatriots. Introductions were kept brief and the game began.

While Kai didn't quite understand the rules of this alien sport all he really cared about was getting in that much sought after quality time with his brother, batting the ball back as best he could. Zephyr's colleagues weren't blind to the slight facial resemblance between him and his crippled sibling but kept quiet out of respect, happy to see a smile on his face again. Sadly the heat quickly took its toll on them, Zephyr ducking out to find somewhere shaded for Kai to rest.

In his search, he happened across Raul all cosy atop a blanket with somebody he hadn't seen in years. Kai however felt his heart shattering seeing the man he'd grown feelings for kissing somebody else and a woman no less. Raul's presumed girlfriend caught on that they were being watched; cherry red eyes alight with shock at seeing who had found them.

"Zephyr?"

"Monica. Been a while, hasn't it?"

"Definitely. Who's that hiding back there?"

Zephyr glanced over his shoulder noticing straight away that something was wrong. For now, he linked Kai's behaviour to his fear of women, giving him a supportive pat on the head.

"Come on now, Monica won't bite. You not gonna say hi?"

Kai said nothing, refusing to even peek over Zephyr's shoulder. This behaviour also aroused concern in Raul. Monica waved off the apologetic look Zephyr gave her, figuring the slimmer male behind him was just shy.

"Another day perhaps. It's good to see you looking well anyway. Crusher's been fretting since you left home."

"Yeah that sounds like your brother." Zephyr turned now to Raul, his eyes like knives. "If anything happens to this girl I'll have your guts for garters, Fernandez. Is that clear?"

Raul gulped, fearful of the finger hovering not too far from his face. "C-Crystal sergeant."

"Good. I'll leave you two in peace. Behave yourself young lady."

"You're one to talk old man."

Thinking it best to get Kai back into Sergei's care, Zephyr ambled along the sand and through crowds all while his concern grew, swearing for a moment he felt something wet rolling down the back of his neck.

From the moment he was back on solid ground Kai was unresponsive to everyone, knees drawn up to hide his face. Zephyr could offer no insight to why when Sergei inquired about the sudden change in mood. All he knew is that it happened right around the time they ran into Raul and Monica. Looking around the group, something else worried Zephyr. Viktor was nowhere in sight. Being told Kai's second born was with a friend did little to soothe him, frantically scanning the sea of people trying to spot Viktor's unique mop of hair.

The beach was a big place and with this massive a crowd it'd be effortless to lose one's way not to mention easy to get snatched. Zephyr feared the latter coming to pass, recalling what he considered the most traumatic night of his life from just over a decade ago; an event that elevated his desire to protect those dear to him. He'd been anxious of Aiden going out alone ever since it happened, a threat from times long gone still very real in the present day. Right as Zephyr gave in to the voice in his head nagging him to hunt for his nephew he collided with someone. That someone turned out to be Viktor who was now on the floor from getting a face full of bullet proof vest, devoid of his usual cheer. He didn't take well to Zephyr's fussing, swatting away the caring hands just trying to make sure he wasn't hurt.

Pushing down the worry gnawing at his heart, Zephyr gave his nephew some space, silently watching him skulk off into the shadows near where Gou sat. With everyone safe and accounted for, he got back to work before somebody snipped at his heels about being lazy. His biggest mistake was doing so on foot, stopping dead at the sight of someone walking no less than four dogs. Soon as the canines saw him their handler was the one being walked, sprinting after the fleeing sergeant running for his life. Rover saw and heard the pack going by, dashing off toward them before Sergei could stop him. Zephyr luckily managed to outrun the frenzied pooches to take shelter in his car, cowering as they all jumped up at the door.

Sergei was hot on Rover's tail, watching in concerned disbelief when the Pitbull mix put himself between the other dogs and their target, barking and snarling in warning for them to back off. At least, that's how the butler interpreted it, looping his fingers around the straps of Rover's harness to bring him under control. The abandoned dog walker did similar with their quarry, apologising profusely for all the trouble covered in sand from face planting on the beach. Poor girl had certainly bitten off more than she could chew. To hopefully ease her burden, Sergei whistled for the boys. Neither of them looked amused at being disturbed.

"Gou, Viktor, help this young lady return those dogs to their owners please."

Kai's heirs did as they were bidden but not without a look of irritance on their faces. Once the pack of dogs had left his sight, Sergei had an idea. Zephyr apparently wasn't expecting a knock on his window, muttering curses in a clipped tone.

"You can come out now, they're gone."

Sergei waited for the driver side door to open before letting go of Rover's harness and he instantly hopped inside followed by even more cursing. Just as Sergei suspected, Zephyr was being licked to death and didn't look happy about it, Rover on his lap. So there was at least one dog in the world who didn't want to take a chunk out of Kai's brother. Well, not of his leg or backside. Zephyr's pride on the other hand, Sergei was sure Rover would devour every crumb of it.

"Rover, down."

Zephyr looked more than a little relieved to have the chunky mammal off his legs, stretching them outside the car to get some blood flow back into them before getting out properly. Rover's tail was wagging so violently in sheer happiness that his butt swung with it! Sergei held up the sturdy chain leash for Zephyr to take earning him a wary, scathing look.

"He's not going to bite for goodness sake. Just take the damn leash and walk him. And a word of advice, hold on tight."

Zephyr still wasn't 100% on board, nervously slipping his hand into the thick loop of leather.

Just walk him he says; were the words circling sarcastically around Zephyr's thoughts as Rover outright dragged him back down to the beach, Sergei a short distance behind. Like hell was a dog going to make a fool out of him, picking up the pace until they were both full on sprinting. Having a height advantage didn't help Sergei much as he struggled to keep up; and he'd been one of the best in track at school second only to Yuriy. The mad dash ended with Zephyr collapsing onto his back gasping for air while Rover wanted to go again, sniffing at Aiden excitedly. This earned him much love from Evelyn which in turn made his tail do windmills.

A call coming through on his radio dragged Zephyr away from his breathing efforts, not expecting to hear from his CO. Extra unexpectedly he was given the remainder of the day off, gladly kicking back once his shoes and vest were off only to regret it seconds later; Rover covering the sweaty tootsies with slobber. Turns out Zephyr was VERY ticklish underfoot. Cute as it was, the loving pup was pulled away for his own safety. Best not to try Zephyr's patience too far.

For the next couple hours everyone just sat chilling until mid afternoon. By then Max's sons had narrowly escaped death after tossing water over their uncle both to cool him off and clean his face of doggy saliva. He'd been about to give Sergei a hand treating everyone to a round of ice cream when it happened and boy was he unimpressed. Raul reclaimed Vivi to continue their day elsewhere, his concern about Kai's change in mood growing. Angel had unintentionally stolen Nevan for half an hour when he'd sought to hang out with Aiden, hitting it off with Ivan's miniature straight away. The bluenette speaking flawless English certainly came as a surprise. Ivan wouldn't admit it, but he'd always worried for his son, that others wouldn't like the boy because of his abnormally large nose and piercing eyes, happy to see Nevan easily getting on with another kid his age. He even traded numbers and social media profiles with Angel they clicked that well.

The cool air of home was a welcome relief, most of the family gathering in the living room. Strangely Viktor was the only exception, diverting upstairs soon as he stepped in the door. Zephyr had taken a quick detour home so he could change out of the uncomfortably tight swimsuit. Straight away he noticed his youngest nephew missing and something inside him just snapped, hunting Viktor down with every intention to find out what was bothering the usually chipper teen. As anticipated, Viktor was lying in bed hugging his pillows.

"Hey kiddo, mind if I come in a sec?"

"Yes."

"Sweet. I just wanted to have a little chat that's all. Been a while since we've had chance."

Viktor grumbled about wanting some peace and quiet but his mumblings went ignored, Zephyr relaxing in the empty space behind him, arms behind his head. He couldn't count the times he'd been in need of someone to confide in but had nobody who would listen and he didn't want Viktor to feel that loneliness, not anymore.

"C'mon, tell your uncle Zeph what's up. I'm not just an angry old man y'know."

"Just leave me alone."

"Not happening kid. Fine then I'll take some pot-shots. Now let's see…handsome boy like you should have girls fighting over him but probably not the one he wants. Am I close yet?"

Viktor curled in on himself, stubbornly refusing to answer. Yep, he was close alright.

"Rejection sucks, I know. A lot of pretty girls turned me down too."

This time Viktor glanced over his shoulder, sceptical that his uncle hadn't gotten any woman he wanted. "You're just trying to make me feel better…"

"Well yes but I'm also not bluffing. Y'see Vik, I'm what folks call damaged goods and I've been labelled as such since I was a little older than you are now. Some girls just aren't into the bad boy type that's all. I count myself lucky to have found not one but two beautiful women who saw the man I am beyond the label. Look at it this way; her turning you down just means she wasn't the one. You'll find your soul mate one day, just be patient and weather out the storm. C'mere you handsome devil."

Reluctantly, Viktor rolled over only to be ensnared by toned arms and squeezed. Fighting wouldn't help him get free any faster so all he could do was surrender, sliding an arm over Zephyr's stomach feeling the outline of deep abs as his hand went. Snuggling closer, Viktor discovered the loose black t-shirt also concealed a meaty pair of pecs. Being nearly nose to nose with his uncle, he got a better look at the scratches Lady Rouge left behind, tracing his fingers over them curiously.

"How did these happen?"

"That's a story for when you're a little older. All I'll say is that they didn't come from my mother. Now enough talk more cuddles. Cuddles make everything better."

Viktor didn't argue, wholly leaning against his unexpectedly huggable uncle. He'd always figured Zephyr to be too stern for snuggles, glad that this wasn't the case. They stayed that way for what felt like years, Viktor only speaking to reveal who it was that shot him down, Zephyr unsurprised to hear it was Rin. Gou's little brother could barely take his eyes off the golden eyed maiden a week ago. Sergei came searching for the duo close to supper time, concern written clear as day across his face. Without specifying why, Zephyr told him it might be best to relieve Rei of cab duty for the rest of term. Plus it would do Kai some good to get out more, even if it was just a ten to twenty minute car ride.

Said sibling was saddened to hear Zephyr wouldn't be staying for tea, not allowing him or Aiden to escape unmauled. Evelyn couldn't get away without promising she would teach Saoirse more about knitting and crocheting as the girl had been quite intrigued watching her work on something over the hours. Until then, she'd just have to make do with Elektra as a teacher. To the surprise of everyone, Zephyr received a hug goodbye from Xakyr that he readily returned. Nevan settled for a handshake but couldn't for the life of him squeeze anything out of Aiden.

Three days later at Varskovitz house;

"Hey dad? Do you think you could pick me up after school today?"

Zephyr paused and turned to towards the kitchen table, raising a questioning brow at the sight of Aiden sitting with his head bowed low. He supposed it was his fault the boy had confidence issues given what both of them went through after Holly's untimely demise.

"Sure kiddo. What time do you finish again?"

"3:30pm, sir."

"Hey now, what's with this "sir" business all of a sudden?"

Aiden remained silent and stared holes into his bowl of porridge. Something was clearly bothering him; the first clue being that he asked to be collected from school. On top of that, his law enforcing father saw other signs that he himself used to give off at Aiden's age. Wiping his hands dry of water, Zephyr eased himself into a chair with hopes that Aiden would open up to him. He nervously reached out for his son's hand, flinching every time it twitched until fingers of white and pale brown were entwined.

"Aiden, talk to me. What's going on? I can come get you after school, it's no biggie."

"But there are people who need your time more, dad. I feel selfish just being here with you."

"You're my son, Aiden. Nobody else in this world requires my time more than you do. And…I know that I haven't been a particularly strong presence in your life since your mom died. But I want you to know that I AM trying. To be a better man and father than the one I've been these last 15 years. I'm always here if there's something you wanna get off your chest, okay? I know you better than you think kid coz you're like I was at that age. Tell you what; when I come get you later I'll bring something a whole lot sexier than the police cruiser and the old family wagon. There's a very old friend of mine it's time you met. How does that sound?"

"Promise?"

"Cross my heart."

Aiden's teary eyes lit up like a tree at Christmas, catching Zephyr off guard when he pounced into his arms.

Stepping into the station nearly two hours later, Zephyr felt an immediate weight on his shoulders. He hadn't been this nervous in a long time, his feet carrying him to a door no cop liked going through. Gorran Haven's police Chief was not a man to be taken lightly. Zephyr waited patiently after giving the frosted glass window three soft knocks, internally fearing for his job and life when the call to come in barely made it through the door.

"Chief, I would like to get off from my shift early today."

"Oh? And why is that Varskovitz? You never make such requests."

"It's my son, sir. He wants me to pick him up from school later and my schedule won't allow any free time to do so."

"How is Aiden doing these days? We haven't seen him since…well not since we laid Holly to rest."

"He's in good health physically, Chief. It's his mental health I'm worried about right now. At breakfast this morning Aiden confessed to feeling guilty about taking up the little of my time he has, that he thinks other people need me more than him. For my own son to say that makes me feel like I've failed as a father. And I know I've made some pretty stupid decisions since losing his mother."

To Zephyr's surprise and somewhat horror, his CO softened. He often forgot that the precinct was basically an extension of his family, for those who cared to think that way at least. And a good 80% of his colleagues considered him a brother or a son dependant on their age.

"I'll cut you a deal, Varskovitz. Get off early today and spend the next two weeks with your kid. When you come back, I expect to see you in a better state, understand?"

"Yessir. Thank you, sir."

Zephyr left the room feeling a hundred times better, but not before giving his Chief a salute of gratitude. Everyone could see his mood had brightened significantly, hoping that life for the tortured sergeant would finally take a permanent turn for the better, none of them wishing to see him crash and burn again. Holly's murder affected the whole department, but none more than her partner not just in work, but in life.

When Zephyr had requested early leave, he didn't anticipate being practically booted out of his usual schedule at dinner time. He was already exhausted, the backlog of fatigue that had been piling over several years finally catching up to him. Chasing criminals on foot all morning certainly didn't help matters. Zephyr barely had the energy to sit at his kitchen table with a rousing coffee before passing out. When he came to, Evelyn was at his side looking incredibly concerned.

"Evie? How long have you been sitting there?"

"About an hour I think. You were pretty far gone. Is everything okay?"

Zephyr stretched his arms out across the table and his legs under it, feeling every stiff joint pop and crack. There wasn't a day gone by that Zephyr didn't feel grateful to have Evelyn in his life. She'd swooped in when he needed someone the most, picked up the pieces and put him back together as best she could. He owed her his life, what was left of it anyway. Relapsing like he did had probably shaved a decade or two off his clock. One minute Evie was giving Zephyr's tense shoulder an affectionate stroke, the next she was moaning his name as he made sweet love to her on the kitchen table.

How Holly survived with such a horny man, Evelyn didn't know. What she did know however is that one of Zephyr's only outlets for stress was sex. It always had been since he turned 15 according to him. A self diagnosed addict, as it were. But it was one addiction he felt safe enough keeping around. Nobody got hurt and everyone involved had a good time. Plus it was good exercise. Both of them were so caught up in their world of bliss that the front door opening and closing with a bang fell on deaf ears, Aiden in the hallway with a face like thunder and it only grew darker when he saw the lovebirds. He went unnoticed until the peak had seemingly been passed, a dark blush creeping across Evelyn's face.

"Aiden, the hell are you doing standing there?!"

"You were supposed to come pick me up, remember?! You promised! Guess I'm really not worth your time after all!"

"Aiden!"

In the distance a door could be heard slamming shut followed by smashing glass. All at once Evelyn felt awful. Had she known of the arrangement, Zephyr would not have been left to sleep so long or have his way with her. Pulling away from his defiled mistress, Zephyr crashed into the side and slid all the way to the floor, mumbling about being a failure like a man possessed, knees drawn up to his chest. Evelyn knelt by him despite wanting to make sure Aiden was okay too. The boy had never blown up before. Aiden was known for being a timid child but then Evelyn supposed that your only living parent falling back on drugs and hookers to ease their pain would've left significant damage not just to the child's mental state, but their trust in said life and care giver.

Every second he could get with his father meant the world to Aiden even if he wouldn't admit it out loud to anyone. He came so close to losing the only family he had left. And for him to explode with such anger told Evelyn that this wasn't the first promise Zephyr had broken, intentionally or not. All she felt able to do was hug him and hope he'd be okay. Something being thrust into her lap made Evelyn look away for a brief moment, identifying that it was Zephyr's phone.

"Please Evie. Take it away from me. I don't want to be that man again."

"Zephyr, it's okay. I'm here. Aiden just needs time."

"It's not him Evie, it's me! It always has been! I've been screwing up ever since before Aiden was born! Can't even keep a simple goddamn promise after claiming that I'm trying to do better!"

"But you are trying, Zephyr! And Aiden knows that. You're already a far better man than the one I met 8 years ago. I promised that I wouldn't let you relapse again and I don't plan on breaking that vow. Now you're going to be a good boy and calm down while I try to call your brother. God knows you need him right now before the devil makes you do something beyond stupid this time."

"I'm sorry, Evie. You deserve better…better than a failure like me. All of you do. Maybe it'd be better if I just wasn't here anymore."

Half way across town, Sergei was just taking Kai and the kids for a relaxing trip to the seafront, partially as a reward for Saoirse and her brothers doing so well at school. No one expected Kai's phone to go off, him most of all but soon as he saw Zephyr's name on the screen nothing else mattered.

"Da?"

("Kai? Oh thank god, it's Evelyn. Is there any chance you could come see your brother?")

"Like right now?"

Evelyn went quiet for a moment, the phone seemingly away from her ear and close enough to Zephyr for his deranged grumblings to be picked up.

"Evelyn, what's going on?"

("Aiden came home upset that Zephyr didn't pick him up after school like he promised and said something about not being worth his dad's time after all. I…I think it's broken him, Kai. Badly. Zephyr keeps muttering that he's a failure, that everything would be better if he wasn't here and I'm scared he's going to do something far worse than having a relapse this time.")

"Do what you can to ease him down, I'll be there soon."

Sergei glanced away from the road as Kai hung up, concern gleaming in his eyes. Everyone, including Gou, had an expression of worry on their face. Evelyn had sounded super distressed during the short call. Without being told, Sergei turned the car around as soon as he could. The beach wasn't going anywhere so their trip to it could wait a few days. Family came first, even if Sergei didn't like said relative. But he could relate to Zephyr's feelings of being a bad father, often wishing he hadn't sent his own child away all those years ago even if it was done to protect her from a psychotic aunt.

From what little information Evelyn could give, it sounded far worse for Kai's older brother. And in truth it was. For years guilt had weighed Zephyr down, not just for leaving Kai behind. He'd lost Holly in the most devastating way, left to raise their son alone feeling like he had nobody to call for help and turned back to old habits when the pressure became too much. And Aiden saw all of that happen at such a tender age. One could only imagine how much it truly scarred him.

Every tick of the nearby clock was torture for Evelyn. Nothing she did seemed to soothe Zephyr's frazzled emotions; water, hugs, kisses none of it worked. Relief washed over her when Kai could be heard calling for his brother as he stumbled into the house on crutches, following muffled sobs to the kitchen. Evelyn reluctantly let Zephyr go, her heart breaking and healing to the sight of him sobbing mournfully into his baby brother's shoulder.

"I'm here, Tovarich." Kai soothed, fingers slicing through Zephyr's sweaty hair while rocking him gently. "You're okay, I'm here. Look at me."

Watery amethyst clashed against concerned crimson but only for a few seconds.

"Tovarich, listen to me. You are NOT a failure."

"Then what am I?!"

Evelyn and Kai both flinched to the outburst that resounded with such intense raw emotion also seen echoing in amethyst depths.

"All I've ever done is fail! In trying to save the only family I had left I abandoned him! I couldn't get the people who took me in to be proud of me for the man I was becoming, of the woman who won my heart and then ripped it away when she died! When it finally seemed I'd been able to do something right by creating a new life with Holly I went and fucked that up too! Every single parent meeting I missed is because I was too weak to get the day off work like I'd promised. Couldn't even be here for each milestone Aiden hit, let him down on show and tell days after vowing I would be there for him. The oath I took to serve and protect shattered before my eyes that night I turned a gun on another man because I failed to keep my personal feelings in check. My own son was forced to watch me destroy myself for two fucking years Kai! I never even stopped to realise he was hurting too! I have FAILED, as a brother, husband, partner and most definitely as a father!"

Zephyr's chest heaved, his energy spent. Everything he'd bottled up for over 20 years was finally set free and it hurt like hell to hear. On the flip side of every failure Zephyr listed, Kai saw a success, even the small ones.

Evelyn dutifully fetched Zephyr a fresh glass of water, praying that getting all that anger and frustration off his chest would have a positive effect on him. She could only wonder if Aiden heard it all from upstairs as he hadn't come down. Kai waited until Zephyr had taken a few sips of his drink before saying anything.

"You're so focussed on all the negative things that you're blind to every opposing positive. Because of you I was able to spend 14 years free of all the abuse our parents put us through. My wife almost killing me had nothing to do with you leaving."

"But I wasn't…"

A sharp clout to the face silenced Zephyr quickly; unable to believe Kai had actually just hit him.

"Zip it! I'm not going to sit here and let you beat yourself up like this! You got out of that hell hole, forged a new life here and I am proud of you for it. Yes, for a while I was angry that you'd left me behind but now I understand that by leaving you were trying to help me. Holly came into your life, probably unexpectedly, and made it better. Both of you had to fight so damn hard against a lot of hatred from all sides and you beat those judgemental bastards, brother. Aiden is living proof of your hard won battle."

Kai paused to accept a drink offered up by Evelyn, asking her to fetch Sergei and the kids from outside. It gave Zephyr time to properly process all his little brother was trying to tell him.

"You say not attending parent meetings and days where Aiden could've shown you off to all his buddies is a failure? It tells me you were a dedicated father working to keep the streets safe for his little boy to grow up on. And that night you killed Seamus? You were upholding your oath, Zephyr. He would've gone after Aiden and many others if left alive and deep down you know it. There's no guarantee that monster would've stayed behind bars for what he did to you. Sure, relapsing wasn't the brightest or safest way of getting through your sorrow, but it brought Evelyn into your life, into Aiden's. So you see, brother. You are anything but a failure to me. And to all the people whose lives you've made a better place."

Zephyr almost freaked to a swarm of arms snaking around him, relaxing when he recognised the faces of Kai's children. Had Susumu and Tatiana not met their end, these kids would likely never of been born. They existed because their uncle made a stand, one he wasn't overly proud of it seemed.

"If it wasn't for you working so hard, those kids never would've been punished for hurting me."

Saoirse chimed, her grip on Zephyr's waist tightening. Viktor piped up next, his mismatched eyes gleaming in the kitchen's dim light.

"And even if you were a failure, you're still our uncle and we love you. We're here if you need us, for better or worse. Everybody drops the ball sometimes, some more than others. That's just part of life."

Much as Kai found the sight of his offspring comforting their uncle to be utterly adorable, he needed a slightly more serious word with Zephyr. Evelyn shooed the quartet into the living room at the back of the house, Sergei remaining in the kitchen. Zephyr needed all the support he could get. It didn't take much prompting for the jaded blonde to sit at the table, one of his hands held supportively by a smaller, paler one.

"Zephyr, you need to talk to Aiden about all that guilt you've been shouldering. Believe it or not, but I know what it's like to feel like a bad father. I'm feeling it right now. Much like you, I wasn't really there for my oldest three. 80% of my time was spent working, 15% got stolen by Tanya which left a measly 5% a week for my kids. Wasn't too bad at first when Gou was our only child. Being so young he never demanded much, just to spend an hour or two on my lap even if I spent that time fast asleep. But that pressure soon adds up."

"Do they know? About what Tanya did to you?"

"In simplified terms, yes. Gou understands more than Viktor and Saoirse. He's an observant little prick just like his uncle."

Zephyr squeaked in mock pain when Kai poked him between two of his ribs, trying and failing to pinch his brother's ear as payback. Honestly it was a relief to see their bond hadn't weakened in the slightest.

So that his sibling had a little time to brace himself, Kai hobbled upstairs to find his understandably upset nephew. Aiden was in his room not really doing much of anything, a broken picture frame off to one side. Zephyr's son was plenty aware that he had a visitor and he really wasn't in the mood for company.

"Aiden? Is it okay to come in?"

"If you're just going to make excuses for him, don't bother."

Kai wasn't blind to the huff of irritation Aiden let out as he scooched over to the bed. This mess was being sorted out whether the boy liked it or not. Father and son could not keep going in the current direction.

"Look. I know you're angry with your dad; you've every right to be. And I'm not sure if you heard Aiden, but you're not the only one who reached their breaking point today."

Aiden rolled onto his side a little, gazing over at Kai who sat staring at him with what could be interpreted as a scolding expression. Rather than push his luck too far, the broody teen decided it best to indulge his uncle just a little bit.

"I know this is easy for me to say as an outsider to the situation, but you need to give voice to your feelings, Aiden. Zephyr can't begin to be a better father to you if he doesn't understand what's going on in your head. It has just killed me to watch and listen as my brother branded himself a failure, not just as your dad, but in every aspect of his life. So let's practise. Don't take it easy kid, lay it on thick."

"What do you mean?"

Kai sighed heavily. Why was his family so exhausting to deal with? "I want you to unload some of your stress onto me. Not all of it. Save that for Zephyr. Now come on, tell your uncle Kai a few of the things that have been bothering ya."

Aiden took a readying breath, still not really sure what was being asked of him by the relative he was continually getting to know.

"He's never around when I need him the most. And ever since Evelyn walked into our lives it feels like he spends more time with her. Don't get me wrong, I'm grateful to her for getting dad away from that dark place; I just…feel invisible all the time. And he's never kept any of his promises. Today was no exception."

When Aiden least expected it, Kai pulled him into a hug, one that radiated with boundless love and support. He couldn't remember the last time Zephyr held him the same way. Evelyn was preparing some snacks for everyone when her surrogate son and his uncle came into the kitchen, Zephyr looking up from his now stone-cold cup of coffee. He stayed seated when Kai gave him the signal not to move.

"Now Aiden, you need to let your father know EXACTLY how you feel and have felt in whatever way works best but I will not tolerate any violence, understood?"

"Yes uncle. I understand."

"Good lad. Now let him have it. It's gonna hurt but you can't keep dancing around this problem."

Kai moved to occupy the gap between Aiden and Zephyr, keeping his spare eye on Evelyn. He didn't doubt that some of Aiden's ire was for her. A stagnant silence hung in the room, father and son staring nervously at one another.

"It's okay, son. I can take it. I meant what I said this morning, about being here if you needed to get something off your chest."

"But I need you there for more than that! Have done for my whole life! For fifteen years you've hardly been around! At first I kinda got it. Your job is very time consuming. And even though mom always told me you were doing everything for us, it was never what we needed. She needed her husband and I needed my papa. I still remember that day you and mom were supposed to come with me to school for show and tell. It was just her at the front of class with me. Some time later I had to write an essay and read it in front of my whole class. You were supposed to be there for that too but instead of supporting your son, I don't even know where you were! Shortly before mom died, there were nights I couldn't go to sleep without you there to say goodnight but you were on duty as usual. Mom sat with me until I cried myself to sleep those nights. I just…I feel like you don't want or love me, dad. Evelyn sees you far more than I do! It seems like every time I turn my back you're shagging her!"

Said lass had been on her way back into the room when those words left Aiden's mouth and she went bright crimson. He wasn't exactly wrong to be fair. Zephyr did pounce on her quite often, more so over recent months because this year marked the tenth anniversary of Holly's death. Perhaps that's why Aiden was more stressed out than normal? Maybe asking to be picked up from school today was his way of reaching out, to bridge the ever present gap between him and his dad. In the blink of an eye Aiden was in Zephyr's arms, both of them losing a battle against the tears pouring down their faces.

"Stupid boy, of course I love you. You're my son, the only living piece of your mother I even have left in this world. A single apology is nowhere near good enough but it's all I have. Even before you were born Aiden I was terrified of being a bad father to you, not knowing that by working so much and spending so little time with you that I steadily became what I feared. My father wasn't exactly what you'd call perfect. And I suppose he rubbed off on me more than we thought. Because I can't recall a time he was ever there for me except when he wanted a body to beat."

Zephyr licked his lips, pushing down the nerves bubbling out of control in his gut. So far Aiden was responding well to his father's retaliation but there was more to come yet.

"But I want you to know something, okay? Even though I was never there in person, I was always on the other side of that yellow radio your mom held. So that even if I had to work and miss one of those school meetings, I could still be there. I am so sorry that I wasn't there to pick you up today but I swear it wasn't to spend more time with Evie over you."

"So then…what happened?"

"For years now I've been trying to outrun everything. Today it just finally caught up and I passed out here in the kitchen. I know…what I did after your mom died was stupid and incredibly selfish. But when I came down from that high, after the numbness faded, I would creep into your bed and cry myself to sleep beside you."

Hearing all he had, Aiden felt like a massive fool. Gone was his fear of sounding jealous, maybe even spiteful and spoiled. In it's place was a deep bond that had for years been hidden under a thick shroud. Zephyr wasn't quite finished, pulling Evelyn into the embrace regardless of her protest.

"I'm sorry dad. I'm so sorry."

"So am I, son. Sorry that it's taken my baby brother digging his heels into our spines for us to sort ourselves out."

"That's…not really what I mean."

"What did you break, Aiden? We heard glass being smashed."

Aiden visibly shrunk, now fearing for his life all over again. "I was just…so angry at you for everything that I…I tossed that picture of me, you and mom away from my bed and the frame broke."

Aiden tensed to the feeling of his hair being stroked, surprised by the lack of anger present on Zephyr's face.

"You were venting, it's okay. A frame can be fixed, no biggie buddy. I broke a lot of stuff when I was a bit younger than you are now. Earned myself broken bones in return while I was at it. We'll deal with that later. Right now, I want to make it clear that Evelyn is not here to replace your mother. If it wasn't for her, I'd probably be dead and goodness knows where you'd be. Think of Evie as…an extension of your mom, here to carry on Holly's legacy and to keep us both in line. And I won't marry her unless you're okay with it. Deal?"

"But dad…what about your happiness?"

Zephyr gave Aiden a loving squeeze making him squeal.

"As long as you're happy son, I'll be happy."

"But I want you to be happy for yourself!"

Evelyn pinched the bridge of her nose, smiling in amusement. They were already going around in circles again. Kai merely rolled his eyes and gave Evelyn a supportive pat on the back.

"Being stubborn runs in the family, Evelyn. You'll have your hands full with these two."

"Oh I'm well aware, Kai. I just find myself wondering how Holly put up with him."

"You don't "put up" with Zephyr." Kai chuckled. "He drags you along with no heed to resistance. Just gotta let go and throw caution to the wind."

Ok so this last Zephyr/Aiden-centric segment is what was originally meant to be chapter 7. It'll be its own chapter in Zephyr's Journey for obvious reasons I suppose. I just wanted to add it here as well to kind of give you guys a glimpse of what life for him is like at home.

As for Kai now being on crutches and talking much more fluidly where three days prior he couldn't stand on his own or let out so much as a squeak unless stressed; Elektra's a dash of a slave driver. She just wants him in the best health possible before going home.

Got myself a roadmap of what's coming, bar a few bits as they're easier to remember and trust me, I'm running into a dark place where I rarely tread in a few chapters.

As promised, Zephyr's Journey will be uploaded beside this chapter. I've got 6 done so I'm thinking of uploading one or two chapters a week until I've got nothing to post (Which might end up being very soon)
