chapter 10: Of Harry and saying goodbye

Annabeth Chase:
I nervously tapped my thigh as I waited outside my house for my mom. It was Sunday, 10:00. My mom would be coming to pick me up any minute.
I already missed Percy and Thalia. I knew I would probably be able to visit them but it wouldn't be the same. I know me and Percy only started talking a week before but I felt like I could trust him. He was just one of those guys, one of the very few that seemed trustworthy.
I was broken off my train of thought when a car horn blew off.
I turned to see a big silver van pulling into our driveway. On the side said "Olive Architecture" and that's when I knew...
The van pulled up and I heard some type of smack from behind me.
"Shut up" a boy voice hissed.
"Bob! Their here!"
"Woah."
I turned to see Bob and Matt stalking me through our front window. Once they saw me seeing them they jumped up and down and ran out to me.
"Annie!"
"Hi"
"It looks like your mom is here!"
"Is she rich?"
I rolled my eyes. They could be so clueless at times for 8 year old's, normal kids their age are nosey as heck.
I squatted down to the twins level. "You guys do understand I will be gone for a little while right?"
My half-brothers nodded sadly. It was the first time they seemed sad to see me leave and it felt kind of...good to see them caring about my well being.
The van pulled to a stop in front of the porch that me and the boys were standing on and my heart pounded. I felt an emotional tidal wave at that moment.
Sadness: I may not have always seen eye to eye with my family but...they were still my family. Even Helen was related to me...somewhat.
Anger: my mom really chose the best time to pull me out of my life and into the other. Right after I break up with the douche, and realize my semi strong feelings for a boy who was an absolute stupid, oblivious, gorgeous, kind hearted mess. Right after I finally feel years of weight that I put on my shoulders with my mother and home issues slightly lifted off my shoulders.
Confusion: Why the heck does she have a sudden urge to take me under her wing?! It has been 10 years that I have lived without a mother. Those 10 years were probably the ones where you would need a mother most! Going from 6 from 16 with no mother is pretty difficult, but her randomly popping back into your life once you finally have it all figured out?! Confusing.
There were more but I will spare you the details.
My dad and Helen came out of the house the same time my mother stepped out of the van. She looked just like she did a few days ago on the beach. Black heels, pencil skirt, work blouse, and buisness coat. Her hair into a tight, neat bun.
"Hello Annabeth," she said with a slight smile, "Fredrick."
My parents would probably never interact like they used to years ago. Then, they loved each other. Now, they were foes. It saddened me to know that it is possible for love to loose. Even though happily ever after's weren't real the least the gods could do was make it last for more then 8 years.
I said goodbye to my family and sat in a back seat of the van.

The car ride was...awkward to say the least.
My mom had a little old man with gray, balding hair driving us. He was a peppy guy, very sweet. His name was Harry.
Athena was sitting next to me, her legs crossed.
"So, you will be staying in your own room," she said trying to cut the jerky thick tension. I nodded.
We got to her house not long after. I was surprised. I thought she would have lived far away, maybe not even in Manhattan.
The house was beautiful. It was as big as a mansion, but the house was modest. It wasn't pearly white and shiny like the houses in movies, it had an ancient Greek touch to it. Just up my alley.
I hadn't realized that my mom was watching me the whole time we were standing outside the grand house.
"Do you like it? I designed it myself," she said smiling, seemingly proud that I liked it.
This is when I embarrass myself.
"Like it?! It is absolutely spectacular! I mean the Pillars and the-" I interrupted myself, "Sorry."
My mother was beaming as she guided me inside the house. "Sorry?! I had no idea you did Architecture!"
I smiled shyly and walked in behind her into the house. It looked like the stairway in Titanic...no kidding.
We walked up the right staircase and through a large hallway. Mother opened a door and guided me in.
The room was...beautiful. It had gray walls, French doors with a balcony, a large queen sized bed, and books everywhere.
My mom smiled at me softly once again. "I'll let you get settled in. Dinners at 5," she said leaving the room.
Since my stuff was already transferred there the previous day I just sprawled across the bed and sighed.
'Maybe this wont be as bad as I thought.'

The next morning I quickly got dressed and walked down the giant stairway.
"Good morning Miss. Chase," a voice from behind me said. I jumped, and turned to see Harry, who smiled.
"Oh! Sorry to startle you. But I needed to tell you breakfast is on the counter. Ms. Olympia had to get to work early this morning bet she said she would be able to pick you up from school today," he said happily.
I nodded, thanked the sweet old man, and grabbed the breakfast. After I was done I grabbed my backpack, shoes, and headed outside to Harry, who was waiting in the van.
I decided to sit in the front seat, since I didn't like making Harry feel like my servant or cab driver.
"So," he said as we headed out on the road. "Excited for school?"
I shrugged looking out the window. No, I was not. I was going to be the lone nerd all over again.
Harry smiled over at me, quickly taking his right hand off the wheel to pat my shoulder. "I am positive a smart, talented, beautiful girl like you will do wonderful in school."
The rest of the ride was in a comfortable silence.
"We are here!"
I sighed as we pulled into-
'Goode?!'
