The team were walking and waiting around for some news on Hailey. Will, jays brother walked out into the waiting room and everyone stood up.
"How is she?"
"I can't tell you how sorry I am that this has happened. Hailey is stable now and resting. She was badly beaten and strangled so her wind pipe was a little crushed so it might be hard for her to speak. She had a few other cuts and bruises around her body but she is stable."
Other cops walked away and left standing there was jay, Voight, Kim, Adam and Kevin. "What else happened will?"
"I'm really sorry jay, I can't discuss anymore then that. It's down to Hailey to tell you when and if she is able"
"I'll go see her" Kim said
"Actually she's in and out of sleep but she's asking for jay" Will said.
Voight pulled everyone to one side as jay walked away to her room,
"Kim, I want you to stay but I want the rest of us get back to the district. I want this son of a bitch found and I want his ass nailed to the wall. This stays in house everyone"
Everyone nodded and all the guys left leaving Kim behind. Jay walked down the hall and Will pointed to haileys room. The blinds were closed and door was shut. Jay knocked on the door and walked in. Hailey was laid in bed awake but she was just staring out the window.
"Hey hails?" Jay said
"Hey jay"
"Can I sit?" He asked
"Sure"
Jay sat down on the chair next to her bed and she rolled over but moaned as she laid on her side,
" don't move, please"
" I just want to be able to see you"
"How are you doing?"
"I'm not ready to talk about it yet Jay. I just want you to lay with me" she struggled to say and she moved over. Jay crawled up neck to her and she pushed her head into his neck. Jay hugged her and wrapped his arms round her and she just broke down and cried.
"You're safe Hailey. Just let it out"
She hung on to him as she cried as she thought about what had actually just happened to her. Hailey soon after fell asleep on jay and about an hour later he fell asleep too.
The next morning jay woke up to an empty bed. He got up and looked for Hailey around the room but she wasn't there.
"Hailey?" He said walking into the hallway
"Have you seen Hailey, this is her room" he said to the nurse
"No sorry, I only just started"
"Okay thanks"
Jay walked away and started looking for Hailey. He couldn't see her anywhere. He walked outside the hospital and saw her sat on a bench in her hospital gown. He pulled off his jacket and wrapped it around her,
"Hailey, it's freezing" he said sitting down next to her
"I had to come out here. I can't look at then four walls all the time."
"Hailey, you know you can do what you want but I don't think it's a good idea for you to be out here especially when he's still out there"
"I know Jay, but I don't want him to take away my freedom"
"I get what you are saying but he's a monster Hailey"
Hailey stood up and grabbed jays hand, she held onto it as she started walking. They walked back inside to haileys room and there was a bunch of flowers laid on the table. Hailey walked up to them, and pulled out the card. She put her hand over her mouth and took a deep breath,
"I hope you feel better soon and I can't wait for us to be together again, love Matt"
Jay grabbed the flowers and walked out the room, "did anyone see the man that delivered these?" He said to the nurses station.
Most people shook their heads, "I just saw a guy" he said
"Jay" Hailey shouted
Jay ran back in and she turned around, "he's coming back for me isn't he" she cried
Jay hugged her and lead her back to the bed,
"Listen to me Hailey. He's not going to get back to you. Ever"
"I don't feel safe anywhere. Our home is a terrifying place to me, he knows where I work, where I eat"
"We are gonna catch him Hailey I promise"
Jay helped Hailey back into bed and pulled the blanket over her. He pulled out his phone and dialled it,
"Hey platt, it's jay. Have you got someone you could send over to med as soon as please, everything's fine I just think Hailey would feel a little safer with someone around outside"
"Sure thing" platt said hanging up
Hailey looked at jay and grabbed his hand, "are you leaving me?"
"I'm going to help Voight, he's texted me a couple of times asking for my help and I think I can really help them find him"
"And someone's going to be outside?" She said
"Yes of course. I'm not leaving you alone in this hospital and I'll be straight back when I'm finished"
Hailey leaned forward and wrapped her arms around jay and rested her head on his shoulder. Jay hugged her back and she pulled away,
"Thanks jay"
Jay left as the patrol officer arrived and she sat outside the door. Jay nodded as he left.
Jay's POV
I arrived at the district and ran upstairs to the bullpen. Voight and everyone were sat around the table looking at security footage.
"Hey.. jay" Adam said
"Hey, where we at?" I asked
"How you doing?" Voight said
"Ready to catch this guy, what footage is that?"
"The night.. Hailey was attacked"
"Show me"
Adam pressed play on the footage and I watched Hailey arrived home at 8pm and he was walking out the door at 8:30. I then watched and saw me arrive 5 minutes later.
"So you're telling me got home, did all this and got back out half an hour later. Walking out the building like some smug son of a bitch" I turned around and punched the cabinet behind me
"Halstead..." Voight said
"What?"
"You need a cool head on this"
"Cool head. You saw what he did to her. One of us. We're a family, he doesn't get to get away with this"
"And he won't. But we need to find him and make him pay for this. We need to do this for Hailey."
I sat down on the chair and rubbed my face, "I'm gonna go to haileys apartment and get her somethings. She never wants to go back there and she has nothing"
"I'll come with you" Kim said
"I can go alone"
"You're a boy, I'm a girl. You'll come back with a whole lot of nothing"
I chuckled to myself and grabbed my keys. Me and Kim drove to haileys apartment. We got out and took the elevator up to floor. We walked to the end of the hall and I opened the door. Kim rubbed my shoulder as took a deep breath as I walked in. I walked into haileys room and looked at the bed, it was not made as they had taken the linen for evidence. Kim grabbed the back Hailey had originally packed and put some more things into it. I grabbed the bag off the bed and looked at Hailey.
"Let's get out of here" Kim said
Me and Kim walked out the apartment and into the corridor. We walked out on to the street towards the car when I turned around and saw him stood there leaning against the door.
"Kim" I whispered and pointed forward. I pulled my gun out and started to approach him.
"Matt, Chicago pd!"
He looked up at me and started to run. Me and Kim split up and tried to catch him either side but he disappeared down an alley. I carried on running after him,
"Matt. I will shoot you"
I carried on following him until we were running alongside the train tracks. I was watching the train get closer and I tried to speed up but he ran quicker and jumped over the tracks. I tried to jump to but the train came and blocked me. I waited for the train to pass and as it did I jumped over. I looked around but he was gone.
"Dammit" I pulled my phone out and rang Kim,
"He's gone. He gave me the slip"
A couple hours later, Kim and I were back at the district and had filled in the team about what happened. I picked up the bag for Hailey and grabbed my coat,
"I'm gonna get back to med"
Voight pulled me to one side, "this isn't your fault jay"
"It took me 15 minutes to read that text message. He was half way through attacking her when I picked up my phone"
"Jay, he had been abusing her for a while but this time he snapped. He will pay for this but stop blaming yourself before you kill yourself"
I nodded at Voight and walked out towards the back door. I opened the fire exit and unlocked my car but as I did I saw a shadow from behind a car. I carried on walking until I heard footsteps from behind me. I went to turn around until I felt a excruciating feeling in my back and I dropped to the floor. I heard feet walk towards me and rolled me over,
I looked up and groaned and saw him stood there looking at me, he got down close and whispered to me,
"I said I was gonna kill you and her, either way around doesn't matter"
He ran off as I groaned in pain and I heard sirens and people running out the doors. I cried in pain as people ran towards me and it was Voight,
"Stay with me jay!" He said
I was trying to keep my eyes open and it was so hard, "it burns Hank"
"You're gonna be ok. The ambo is coming jay. You just hold on"
"It was him. It was Matt. He said he was gonna kill me and then her. You have to get to the hospital"
"She's got people there looking after her jay"
Someone, I think it was Kim ran over with a first aid box. Voight pulled out a bunch of bandages and pressed them down on my stomach. I knew the bullet had gone through my back and it had done is my stomach. I screamed in pain and Voight pushed down and all I could hear him saying was he was sorry but he had to keep pressure on it. My eyes started to flutter as the pain got worse and suddenly everything went numb.
