Chapter 1: So We Meet Again
Today was the back-to-school moving day at Yale and Logan and his friends have just arrived after an LBD weekend in L.A. To say that they've indulged in some serious debauchery during their outing would be an understatement. They were currently heading to their new dorms at Berkeley, carrying only their personal belongings - their dorms were already set up prior to their arrival.
Unfortunately, the Stooges didn't share the dorm because of the Dark Lord's efforts to separate Logan and his best friends. However, they managed to get dorms next door as always so they could continue with their usual past-times. Logan was again sharing his dorm with a guy named Lanny - a cool guy, not too fussy, an ideal roommate who doesn't get on his nerves.
Entering his dorm, Logan sighed inwardly - his mother had again taken upon herself to decorate it, just like the previous years. The problem was that her idea of decorating his room was a textbook definition of wasting time. Since she basically didn't know him at all, she couldn't know what he liked. Logan had to do the same thing each year - take out the things he doesn't like to take them to his storage unit and bring back his personal favourites from the said storage unit. Alas, that was his plan for today, as it was each first day of school year ever since he could remember.
Honestly, he was in no mood for doing any of that reorganising right now since he was still fairly hungover from their wild weekend in the City of Angels. Moreover, he was still hung up on that girl with piercing sapphire eyes he had met only a week ago. Even with all his efforts, he didn't manage to find out who she was and, believe him, he had tried. Colin and Finn were pestering him about the girl and the events of the night for the whole week, still laughing at the way she put him in the corner. They put it in their mission never to let him forget about it. Well, he for sure would never forget the girl, her blue eyes popping up in his mind when he least expected it.
Logan had just finished unpacking his wardrobe when his dorm room door swung open and Colin entered the room, "Hey, mate, you done? Let's go grab a coffee and explore the grounds to see what the female population is like this year."
"Well, I can't say no to that, can I?" Logan smirked at the prospect of new girls to have his fun with.
Finn entered the room as well, "C'mon, mates! We have double of work to do this year! We've been away for a year, which means not only freshman ladies, but also sophomore!" He exclaimed excitedly, "Oh, how the chances of finding a perfect redhead have risen!"
Colin and Logan just chuckled at their friend's exclamation, knowing full well about his obsession about redheads. Finn's obsession started years ago, when he stated that red hair is the most exotic hair colour and that, with him being exotic, it was the only logical choice for him. However, that didn't stop him to have his fun with otherwise hair-coloured ladies, but he'll always be hung up on redheads, no matter what. Logan and Colin would not even try to count anymore how many times they had to help Finn find a specific redhead after he forgot her name in his inebriated state.
Sighing, Logan grabbed his wallet and exited the room, followed by his best friends, "So, where do we start?"
"Hm… I was thinking Branford, then we make our way around the campus," Colin explained and the boys agreed, making their way towards their destination.
They entered the quad in front of Branford and Logan noticed Colin bumping his shoulder into a kinda familiar guy at the coffee cart. Logan sighed - Colin could really be a jackass with a stick up his ass sometimes…
"Oh, sorry," the guy apologised and turned to Colin.
"Though seriously, you could've seen me there," Colin of course decided to play the innocent one.
Logan made his way next to Colin and looked at the guy - he seemed vaguely familiar. He got some flashbacks from some parties, "Hey, I know you! Wait, wait, wait, don't tell me. I'm seeing a uniform of some sort…" he pointed his finger at him.
"A may-tag repairman!" Finn piped in, now hanging on Colin who observed the guy with his arms crossed.
The guy answered, "I've bartended for you - for your parties…" he took a slight look back at the girl he was with. She was ordering a cup of coffee and had her back turned to the group.
It clicked in Logan's head, "That's right, you're a talented man! You make a kick-ass margarita!"
"Thanks," the guy chuckled uncomfortably.
"It's good to see you again, what's your name?" Logan asked, wanting to memorise it for future parties.
"Marty," the guy answered.
"Great. So, I'm assuming your services are still for hire this year? Your financial situation hasn't changed at all?" Logan inquired.
"Nope," Marty shifted uncomfortably and noticed the girl turning to him, her eyes glued to her phone, "Oh, this is Rory."
The girl looked up and narrowed her eyes at the group in front of her, "Oh, Jesus," she grumbled exasperatedly.
To say that Logan was shocked would be an understatement - What was she doing here? Was she attending Yale as well? Satisfied with this turn of events, he plastered his killer smirk "Well, well, well… colour me surprised."
Finn and Colin snickered at his remark, "Love! What are you doing here?" Finn exclaimed excitedly.
"Um, getting coffee," she deadpanned and inhaled the strong aroma of coffee before her face turned into the state of pure content and she took the first sip. All of the boys were observing her mesmerised when she moaned slightly after her first sip. How could she make something so basic like drinking coffee so sensual? Logan thought to himself.
"Oh, God…" Finn sighed, "I'm seriously reconsidering a career as a coffee cart guy if he gets to see this every day." Even though Logan agreed with Finn, he somehow didn't like him ogling her. As a matter of fact, he didn't like neither Colin nor Marty ogling her. Hm…
Rory just glared at him over the rim of her coffee cup and continued drinking her coffee. Marty turned to Rory, confused by the situation, "Listen, I gotta go meet my roommate, see you later." She nodded and smiled at him.
Logan turned back to Marty before he left, "Excellent running into you. Where're you living now?"
"Branford," Marty answered shortly.
"Oh, excellent, I'll give you a call," Logan stated hoping the guy would walk away now, he wanted to talk to Rory a bit more.
Colin looked Marty up and down and said, "Excellent shirt really, I can see what she sees in you."
Logan was getting annoyed with Colin's behaviour, "Don't be an ass, Colin." He somehow gathered that she wouldn't be so overjoyed by a comment like that.
"Me? Never! I'm a friend to all people - large and very, very small," he stated looking pointedly at Marty as he was leaving.
Glaring at Colin for his comment and then looking back at Rory, Logan saw her shooting daggers at them. He got a feeling that what was about to happen won't be so nice.
"What the hell is wrong with you people?!" She exclaimed, fury glaring through her eyes. Yeah, Logan was definitely right - it won't be nice.
"What do you mean?" Colin asked her confusedly which was kinda expected from him because he really could be a snob sometimes.
"What do I mean?" She hissed at him incredulously, "Was that comment really necessary?"
"Hey! I was just stating a fact!" Colin exclaimed, not liking people accusing him of something.
"A fact?!"
Colin was about to explain when Finn piped in, seeing where this was going, "Love, please excuse our dear Colin here, he still has to get the stick from his ass removed," Colin glared at him but Finn continued unaffected, "We apologise in his name and promise that it won't happen again."
Rory just glared from Finn to Colin and Logan could see a flicker of understanding in her eyes, so he decided to speak up, hoping that the situation was resolved now, "So, Rory," he emphasised her name, "nice to see you again. I must say I was right - angry really works for you."
Yep, maybe too soon. She turned her eyes to him and glared even stronger, "I'm not angry, I'm irritated!" She exclaimed.
"By me?" Logan inquired.
"Yes!"
"What exactly have I done, care to enlighten me?" She narrows her eyes at him but it didn't stop him, "C'mon, I just wanted to have a little fun at that party and the opportunity represented itself," Logan tried to get in her good graces, not being completely satisfied with this turn of the conversation.
"Argh! I don't even know your name! And it's not about the damn party, I could not care less about that!" She was full on steaming now, at much of Logan's pleasure but how could she not know who he was? Most of the people knew him here at campus at least.
"So, then, what's the problem?"
"It's because you speak to people as if they are below you!"
"People?" He was confused - what the hell was she talking about?
"Marty!"
Aha! Everything made sense now! Well, kinda… but he didn't have time to dwell on that now, "Ah! Your friend Marty?" He looked in the direction that Marty went just minutes earlier.
"Yes! My friend - Marty. You talked to him like he was dirt and that's why I'm looking at you like this!" She exclaimed and he finally understood her point. Unfortunately, he was aware that he behaved like a jerk sometimes, more often than not - if he wanted to be honest with himself. It was the way he was, but he'd never hurt anyone on purpose.
Anyways, he wanted to continue this argument, "I'm sorry! What did I say that was so bad? I said hello and I said he made a kick-ass margarita," Logan explained his behaviour.
"It was not what you said, it's how you said it!" She looked at him with hurt in her eyes, as well as a glimmer of disappointment and he felt bad. Why did this girl affect him so much?
"And how did I say it?" He inquired.
She thought for a second and then stated firmly, "Like Judi Dench." The boys snickered at the comment, amazed by how this girl didn't even hesitate to take Logan a peg or two down. That for sure was a first.
Ouch! That was mean and, honestly, right on point. Logan thought to himself.
"Ouch!" He had to exclaim, amazed that she had the guts to say that to him. No girl has ever dared to call him anything similar. Maybe Rory really didn't know who he was. Hmmm.
"Just because someone doesn't have money or a fancy family, doesn't mean they're inferior to you!" She elaborated her irritation.
"I agree," Logan for sure agreed with her point, he couldn't deny it.
"And just because someone is a bartender at a party for you and your friends, it doesn't mean that you can talk to them like a servant!" She exclaimed and started storming off.
Logan definitely didn't want to end this discussion and, even though he agreed with her, he had to make another argument, "Well…"
She turned abruptly back to him, "What?!" She asked completely out of herself.
"I hired him, I paid him, he served. That's what a servant does," Logan continued with his argument, fully enjoying seeing her totally riled up.
"Are you serious?!"
"For the sake of argument…"
"He was doing a job!" She made a movement with her hands to amp up her statement.
"A job he took willingly…" Logan tried to explain.
She rolled her eyes at him, "Some people need to work."
"And I bet if you ask him, he'll tell you that he made excellent tips that night because my friends, they tend to enjoy a refill," he stated pointing to Finn and Colin.
"Not the point!" He could feel that she was starting to give up.
"To a bartender tips are very much the point."
"Just because you pay someone doesn't mean you can speak to them as if they are beneath you!" She bored her angry glare at him.
Logan could've ended the discussion right here and now but that would mean she'd won, so he decided to make an all-time-winning argument, "Actually, the fact that this is a free country means that I can speak to anyone in any manner I choose," she looked away, "However, the rules of a civilised society may frown upon a certain obvious show of snobbery. Is that your argument?"
"I don't have an argument!" Rory exclaimed.
He really wanted to prolong this as far as he could, "Well, I can give you a moment to formulate one if you want to continue," he offered with a show of his hand.
"I need to go!" She whined in annoyance.
"You concede!" Logan exclaimed in a disappointed voice.
A moment after she looked him directly in the eyes and said something that he definitely wasn't expecting, "I don't like it when people hurt my friends."
There was no argument he could put against what she had just said. He agreed with her from the start but only made arguments because he enjoyed having an intelligent discussion, although this one sounded more like a fight. Furthermore, he agreed with her latest argument completely - he had never taken it easily when someone hurt his friends. And he also enjoyed seeing her riled up. That's why he asked for a clarification, in an attempt to even out the field, "And you react when goaded?"
"I'm not goaded! I'm so far from goaded! Get out your compass and I'll show you how far from goaded I am!" She exclaimed exasperatedly, her eyes narrowing at him. Compass?
"I think we got a serious debater in our midst," he had to give her props for handling this discussion way better than many people he had ever held a discussion with, to which Colin and Finn just nodded, still amazed by how unaffected this girl was by Logan.
Rory just scoffed at him, not even bothering to provide him with an answer. Logan shook his head, disappointed that his discussion with Rory was nearing an end, he decided to play it nicely, "Tell Marty I said hi and I promise I won't talk to him as a servant when I see him next time."
She just glared at him, obviously not amused with his statement. Ah, if looks could kill…
He noticed her starting to leave so he decided to do one more thing: he leaned slightly towards her and inhaled her smell, so fresh and clean, nothing like he had ever encountered before. In a low seductive voice he asked, "Now, Rory, tell me that wasn't fun?"
She continued glaring at him and when he realised she won't be providing him with an answer he backed off and turned to his friends so that they could leave. After a few steps an idea occurred to him so he turned back to her, plastered his best smirk and stated, "Master and Commander."
Rory looked at him with confusion and asked, "The movie?"
Hmm… Maybe she was even smarter than he had anticipated. In any case, her brain was obviously still working after their heated discussion. He just smirked at her, "No, that's what I want you to call me from now on."
Logan watched her reaction for a brief moment - an eye-roll and a snort, as expected, and continued walking away.
Well, this certainly wasn't how he had hoped to see her again but at least he got to see her again. Moreover, he got to see her at Yale which could only mean that she goes to school here as well. Now, only a quick trip to the Admissions Office and he'll know more about her.
Because, if there was one thing that Logan was sure about, it was that he wanted to see her again. He wanted to see those blazing blue eyes, he wanted to talk to her. Especially now, when she thinks so little of him - he was eager to prove her wrong.
Rory.
He whispered her name so silently that no one could hear him and marvelled in the way the name rolled off his tongue.
Much to Logan's dismay, he didn't manage to find her in the student records. After seeing her with Marty, he concluded that she is most probably a sophomore at Yale now, it was rather unlikely for her to have such a good relationship with a guy she met just today and he doubted that they've known each other outside of Yale. Not that he knew anything else about this girl. He also gathered that she couldn't be older than a sophomore, he would for sure have met her a year ago if that was the case.
After spending more than an hour in the Admission Office - first flirting with the older lady who worked there to get the transcripts and then going through the extremely long list of students, hoping to spot a very specific name - Rory. As the case would have it, he lucked out and was now sulking at his dorm, cleaning up the stuff he didn't need.
What bothered him, and for the life of him he couldn't explain why it bothered him, was her relationship with Marty. Sure, they looked like friends, really good friends. He wasn't sure if he had seen any kind of attraction from her side, but was sure that Marty had some feelings for her. In any case, this had nothing to do with him - he just wanted to find her and get to meet her better. He couldn't explain why, but he was attracted to her in a way he had never experienced before - he was intrigued.
Deciding that he had to get his mind off of her, he changed his clothes and went to pick up Colin and Finn so that they can head out to the Start-of-School party at Berkeley House. He entered the boys' dorm and found Finn on the sofa in his SpongeBob Squarepants boxers, holding a bottle of Jack and watching SpongeBob on the TV, "After all this time, you still manage to shock me," Logan laughed at his best friend, not believing what he was seeing.
"What can I say, mate, gotta keep some mystery between us," Finn answered and offered him the bottle of Jack.
Logan accepted the invitation and sat next to him, taking a sip of the drink, "Where's Colin?"
"I'm in here!" Colin yelled from Finn's room and got out stressed, "I finished unpacking my stuff but this doofus here has again obviously decided to wait until Thanksgiving to unpack so I took the matter in my own hands. I don't want the repeat of our Sophomore year." Logan took in the state of the room and could only agree with Colin. Finn was many things, but tidy definitely wasn't one of them. Two years ago he managed to keep his stuff in boxes for more than 2 months after the school started - well, really, around the boxes and basically everywhere except where the stuff should have been - what drove Colin crazy and made him kick Finn out of the dorm for two weeks. Finn had decided to take the two weeks as a holiday from school and went to Las Vegas with some old friends until Colin and Logan got a call to pick Finn up on Alaska. To this day they didn't understand how he had ended up there, especially considering the fact that Finn hates the cold.
"Smart decision, wouldn't want to repeat what happened the last time," he said.
Colin shook in dread, "Definitely not."
"What happened the last time?" Finn asked unfazed, chuckling at something on the TV.
Logan and Colin just shared a look, not even bothering to explain, knowing that Finn won't remember it in five minutes.
"I just have to finish this up and we can leave. Give me like half an hour," Colin stated and went back to unpacking, groaning at the amount of shit Finn was able to collect.
An hour later, Colin and Logan were waiting for Finn to get ready because he just had to watch that last episode of SpongeBob. They were both nursing what was left of the bottle of Jack when Colin asked, "So, where did you disappear this afternoon?"
"Um, nowhere, just had to deal with the stuff that I didn't want in my dorm," Logan tried to avoid the subject.
"Funny you say that because Finn and I stopped by a couple of hours ago to make plans for tonight and you weren't there. So? Should I do a wild guess here or you're actually going to tell me what you're hiding?" Colin bored his eyes at him amusedly.
"It was nothing important, just drop it…"
"Sure, so you didn't go to find out where Rory lives?" Colin emphasised her name, knowing he hit the jackpot.
Logan squirmed, really not wanting to explain what he was doing but knowing he wasn't going to get out of this easily, "Maybe…"
"Ha! I knew it! Finn, you owe me a hundred bucks!" Colin hollered in victory, then looked back at Logan, "So, did you find something?"
"No, there's no one named Rory on the campus. I think it might be a nickname. But why would anyone introduce someone with their nickname?"
"Dunno, buddy," Colin took a careful look over his stance, "What's with you and this girl?"
"What do you mean?"
"You seem kinda hung up on this particular girl…" Logan scoffed at the comment but Colin continued, "Now, don't get me wrong, I see the appeal. She's drop-dead gorgeous and it seems that she actually has a brain between her ears, but it's not like you to be hung up over a girl for more than a week," Logan tried to defend himself but Colin raised his hand, "Don't even try to defend yourself, we've been watching you this past week. You've been weird."
Logan sighed, knowing he was right, "I suppose… I suppose I'm just intrigued. There is something about her that attracts me to her."
Finn stepped in the room, finally dressed, "We can see that. And the way she put you in the corner - it doesn't happen often, trust us, we know. I'd suspect that's what made you intrigued. Especially since she was a girl, and a beautiful one on top of it" he drained the rest of the bottle, "You'll see her again, you at least know now that she's on campus. Now, my mates, let another year of wild parties and easy college chicks commence!" He exclaimed and lunged for the door. Colin and Logan got up to catch up with him before he does anything stupid and headed to the party.
TBC!
Author's Note: Here it is: the first official chapter! As I've mentioned before, I'll be using some of the scenes and the dialogue from the original series but also changing them respectfully to accompany my story. Also, I would like to thank you all for wonderful reviews to the Prologue - they made me even more eager to write! And to comment on chelsbaby's and AriesJohnston's reviews - yes, I'm definitely writing Rory's character with a bit more of a backbone - I always wanted her to be a bit more of a stronger character - hope you all like it! Anyways, hopefully you've enjoyed this chapter as well and please let me know what you think in the reviews. Thanks!
