Authoress Note: Welcome to Chapter 2 of Show the Truth. Thank you to those who have left reviews for this story so far. I know that it's pretty short at the moment, but I promise that it will be longer as time goes on. It's just a wee bit hard to get things moving, that's all. Just due to the fact of adding a character in when August arrived. Hopefully everything will smooth over as I write more and more for this story and this series of course. Without further ado Chapter 2 of Show the Truth.

Chapter 2

Ever Watchful Eye

August knocked on the door to Mel's room. He moved his hand back as he heard the shuffling in the room. He bit his lip as she opened the door.

Mel tilted her head sleepily. "August? What is it?" She asked her voice laced over with concern.

"I'm fine, Mel. I'm not hurting at the moment." He said softly trying to soothe her. Ever since he had woken up with that pain in his leg, she had been very concerned about him.

"What is it then, August?" She asked softly looking up into his blue eyes before rubbing her eyes sleepily.

"I'm going to go into town."

Mel bit her lip softly. "Are you sure that you want to do that, August?" She questioned her brows furrowing some. She didn't feel comfortable with having August go out into town without her.

"I'll be fine, Mel. Honestly I'll call you if my leg acts up." August said as he put his hand on her shoulder.

Mel let out a soft breath rubbing her mouth softly. She leaned against the frame and then nodded her head. "Alright." She said softly as she crossed her arms as she looked up at him. "Just call me if you need me."

August squeezed her shoulder lightly. "I promise Mel."

Mel nodded her head. "Okay. Go on, have fun." She said with a small smile.

"Go and get some more rest, Mel." August said, giving her a small smile.

Mel reached up and patted his arm. "Alright. Go on and have fun and try not to stir up any trouble. We really don't need that."

August nodded his head before turning around to leave.

Mel slowly closed the door letting out a soft tired breath. She leaned against the door rubbing her face softly. She could only hope that August would be fine and they wouldn't cause a whirlwind of trouble in town. She slowly went to the window letting out a soft breath. She watched August get onto his bike and was well on his way to explore the new town. She ran her hand through her hair and shook her head lightly. "That boy is going to be the death of me."

ONCEONCE

Mel slowly walked through town, her hands stuck in her jean pockets as she walked. She noticed a small shop that had an open sign on it. She walked as the wind blew causing her to shiver. She could tell that there was a storm rolling in and it wasn't going to be a good one. Her hand reached for the door and opened it causing the door to chime to alert the owner of the shop that someone was there. Mel looked around the shop in awe nibbling her lower lip as she did so.

Mr. Gold walked in from his office. His brows furrowed as he looked at the young woman. "Can I help you?" He questioned as he walked over to where the young woman stood.

Mel looked over, seeing Mr. Gold there. "Sorry if I'm interrupting."

"Oh no, you're not interrupting." Mr. Gold said, offering her a small smile.

Mel bit her lip softly as she lightly touched one of the items. Something that she hadn't seen in quite some time. "Can I?"

Mr. Gold swallowed the lump in his throat as he watched her touching one of the wands that he had there. "Sure."

Mel slowly picked up the wand that Mr. Gold was there with others. Her fingers lightly touched it. "This is beautiful. Where did you come across something so beautiful?"

"Oh I have my ways." Mr. Gold said as he continued to watch her carefully put the wand down where she had gotten it from.

"I'm sure such a wonderful trinket such as that isn't for sale." She said as she turned to him a twinkle in her eyes.

"You are absolutely right, Miss…" He blinked a few times tilting his head looking over her curiously. "So new to town?"

Mel smiled as the question came from Mr. Gold's lips. "Yes. I'm here with my adoptive brother, who's a writer. We're just passing through."

"Just passing through?"

"Yes. He wanted some place quiet and your cozy little town has drawn him in." She ran her hand through her hair. "Not that I blame him. This town is nice to write a story in." She cleared her throat. "I should go and let you get back to business…" She headed towards the door nibbling her lower lip as she shuffled past him. She slowly went to open the door. "I'll be back in to look at more of your trinkets."

Mr. Gold blinked a few times as he watched her leave his shop. He swallowed the lump in his throat. He could've sworn he had met her before.

ONCEONCE

Mel sat across from August enjoying a cup of coffee together quietly chatting with one another as Emma came into the diner to avoid the rain storm.

Emma came over to them after removing her hat. "We need to talk."

August looked up at Emma, his brows furrowed. "Why?"

"Because…." She saw the large wooden case on the floor next to him. "You're suspicious."

"Sitting here? Out in the open? Drinking coffee?" August questioned innocently.

Emma narrowed her eyes.

"I wonder what kind of hell I would have raised had I ordered a doughnut."

"You were talking to Henry."

Mel looked at August with her eyes wide.

"You mean the little kid who came up to me asking me questions? Is that unusual for him, being curious and precocious?"

"What were you doing outside his house?"

"My bike broke down. It happens."

"Your bike broke down?" Mel asked her brows furrowing. "You could have told me."

"It's okay." August said offering Mel a smile.

"Your mysterious box. What's in it?"

"It's awfully frustrating, not knowing, isn't it?" August questioned Emma, looking at her, his brow quirked.

"Just tell me."

"Why? Is it illegal to carry around a box in these parts?"

"No, of course it's not."

"You really want to know what's inside it, don't you?"

"No." Emma cocked her head a little. "Well, maybe." She sat down next to Mel.

"I'm gonna make you wait. You're gonna have to wait a long time, and watch me carry it around, hauling it, to strange and mysterious places. And with each passing moment the mystery will become more tantalizing. Your imagination will inflame, but so will your frustration, never knowing, only guessing, "What could possibly be inside that box?". Or-" He leaned in so he could whisper to Emma. "You could let me buy you a drink sometime and I'll tell you right now."

"You want to buy me a drink?"

August smiled. "Yes."

Emma stared at him intently. "Ok, a drink it is."

August got his box up off of the floor and put it onto the table in front of Emma. He paused for an effect and then opened it revealing a typewriter.

"Really?"

"I'm a writer."

"That's why you're here."

"I find this place provides inspiration. Don't you?" He closed the box.

"Wait. Have you been here before?"

"I didn't say that." He said as he got up.

Emma slowly moved to let out Mel.

He grabbed the box in his hand.

"What about that drink?"

"I said "sometime"."

Emma's brows raised as she watched August and Mel leave together.

Mel let out a soft laugh. "So that's the girl you were swore to protect?"

August let out a breath as they walked. "Yeah that's her."

"She doesn't look like a believer…"

August shook his head lightly. "I don't think she believes either…"
