Past Mistakes
Chapter 7
For all of Mike's misgivings regarding Emma, he handled her like an old pro. Emma had him playing with her dolls and coloring with her in no time. It took Christine back many years to when 'their' kids were small. Mike had always been wonderful with children. Thankfully; Katie and Hannah had sensed what was going on and while they enjoyed having their dad there, allowed him to sort things out with Emma.
About a week later; he tucked Emma in every night and he and Christine spent their nights getting reacquainted both physically and emotionally. Christine knew he was no closer to a decision about Emma. They were doing good working together and getting to know each other again. Late one evening; Mike's cellphone rung and he immediately answered. He walked away but ten minutes later came back smiling.
"Everything okay?" Christine asked.
"Yeah. That was President Reiss. I got my choice for second-in-command." Mike remarked.
"Anyone I know?" Christine asked.
"You met her, but she was only a lieutenant than. Her name is Kara Green. Her last name was Foster back then." Mike explained.
"You must trust her a lot." Christine remarked.
"I do, but what's even better; she will deal with Lt. Adams when she gets here. It'll take a bit for the transfer to go through, but there is a light at the end of the tunnel." Mike said. Christine knew he strongly disliked the young lieutenant, who tried to control every aspect of Mike's life.
"That's good." Christine commented with a smile; even though a thousand questions were going through her mind. She had never been the jealous sort, but they had been apart for six years. Could she expect him to even be faithful in that time? Physical needs would have been needed to be filled and pre-Red Flu; they had had an amazing sex life when he was home. He would have not foregone that. She just didn't have the nerve to ask, and so suspicions and jealousy took over.
