So I am sorry I haven't updated I haven't been writing a lot lately, kind of in a funk, but I am starting chapter 13 and then there will be a final outing after that may be multiple chapters. I have multiple ideas for it. Thanks for follows and reviews and you can always check out some of my other Fics as well.
April comes and goes without any weekend nights, not even a team night. Between the Asgard reaching out for help \ and the Tokra coming by for help as well, it was all hands on deck. Just as they were given the green light for time off, the Asgard contacted them. The Asgard had sent them to a planet that, by all accounts, had been friendly from what they understood. The ancients had made their home there at one time, and the Asgard had found some technology of use and had taken a few items to study, but with the replicator problem, they had no way to return to investigate, So SG-1 lead the way.
The group of people they met were very nice, almost overly friendly, but as soon as they spoke of the Asgard, all hell broke loose, and they wanted nothing to do with SG-1 Earth or anyone else. They were chased back to the gate, so quickly in fact that they thought for sure that they were going to be shot at, with the shiny ancient weapons the group possessed. Daniel promised not to contact them again for safe passage home, but Sam couldn't help but feel as though if they stepped one odd way, they would be shot. They headed back heads down towards the gate as the rain fell and causing Jack to slip in the mud. One of the aliens fires a shot but misses Jack.
"Are you okay?" Daniel asks, looking down at his friend.
"It's broken?" Jack claims.
Sam looks at him and notices the thick sticky mud left his foot in a spot while his body fell the other way. Sam winced and looked back at Jack's face. He was about to pass out due to the pain.
Daniel begs the home planet to be merciful and allow them to get Jack out of the mud, and the gate was in sight. The group allows Sam to carefully dig at the mud releasing, Jack's foot. Teal'c picks his friend up with ease, and they walk through the gate. Sam thankful that nothing worse had happened.
After Jack is given a full-body x-ray, it showed a clean break to his right ankle and a left ulna fracture. With the combination of injuries, Jack wouldn't be able to hobble around on crutches, and he couldn't wheel himself around, the only option, for now, was a motorized wheelchair, and Jack was certain he wouldn't be using one.
After the General had been informed of Jack's injuries, it was obvious that SG-1 would be off rotation for a while. The other 3 team members needed a break. Jack would be in the infirmary a day or two before he got so annoying the staff would kick him out. SG-1 was given a week off. The group all agreed to take turns helping Jack.
After a long discussion between Teal'c Daniel and Sam, they had all agreed it would be easier to temporarily relocate to Jack's house for the next few weeks until he could get moving on his own again. Sam had grabbed her toiletries, and a few books, and her work laptop as well as her personal laptop.
When Jack gets home, he sighs at the steps and realizes how much of a pain in the ass the next two weeks will be, especially with his team. This is the last thing he wants. He knows they are looking out for him. This was a rare occasion where Jack thought Teal'c's snake was good for something. Teal'c could just heal this all away, and if the Tokra weren't in such a bind, he would probably reach out to Jacob, but now wasn't the time, and the bones would heal.
Teal'c was pushing him to the door, and Daniel got to the side of his good arm. Jack trying to balance to get up the steps, but Teal'c and Daniel just lifted him up them instead. Sam has the wheelchair, and before he realized what happened, he is through the door back in the wheelchair, and Sam is ordering pizza while Daniel sets his things in one spare room, her another and Teal'c is asking him what he wants to do. Jack wants to be left alone. He wants to sleep, but that isn't going to happen.
"Let's just watch some Simpson's T.," Jack says. Teal'c nods and angles Jack's wheelchair to gingerly go down the steps. Sam comes down with a pillow for his stool, and Jack transfers from the wheelchair to his chair. The group waits in bated silence as Jack watches the Simpsons. When no one laughs when he does, Jack gets rather annoyed by the lack of sense of humor the rest of the group has, and even the Simpson's don't feel as entertaining as usual.
The group tries to entertain Jack, but even the old favorites aren't doing it. He eventually tells the group he's tired, which leads Teal'c and Jack to walk him to his room, almost carrying him to his bed.
Sam sighed, upset by the fact that Jack was in this kind of mood. He waited until Teal'c Daniel walked out of the bedroom, and she walked in.
It was odd being in Jack's room. She'd been there a few times before in and out but always had an odd since it wasn't a good idea. Right now, she overcame the anxiety and forged ahead.
"Carter, I'm trying to sleep here," Jack claims.
"No, you're trying to avoid," Sam mentions.
"So can't you let an old man avoid you for a little bit? Besides, you'll get tired of me soon enough." Jack stated.
"Come on, sir, it's more than that whats going on?" Sam asked as her face fell. She sits on the edge of his bed as if he were a patient at the hospital with nowhere else to sit.
"Carter, don't," Jack warned.
"Don't what, be your friend, care about you, what?" Sam asks.
"All of the above," Jack claims.
Sam lets out an exasperated sigh.
"Jack, you're injured. You're going to be fine." Sam claims.
"Am I?" Jack asks, looking into his eyes.
"Did someone say otherwise?" Sam asks, wondering if there is something more the story something Jack hadn't told the group.
"Damn it, Sam, I'm not getting any younger, and they told me it's going to take a lot to heal, no Tokra when you need them." Jack hissed.
Sam looked at him.
"Jack, it might take a while, but you'll get through this; your wrist will be well enough in 2 weeks and your ankle 4-6. A few more weeks after with rehab, and we'll be back at it." Sam claims.
"Great," Jack stated.
"Do you not want to go back?" Sam asks.
Jack avoids her and looks away like a scolded child.
"Jack?" Sam asks.
He is slightly startled by the woman beside him calling him his first name.
"Damn it, Sam, I fell in the mud! I could have gotten us all killed. I'm old; I'm past my prime. Maybe it my time to fly the desk." Jack claims.
Sam knew he was a bit freaked out by the weirdness of the last trip through the gate. They all were, but the other three left uninjured, and they Sam hadn't really thought much of the day at hand. It hadn't been any better or worse than other missions, but to Jack, it meant a whole lot. Sam had been rubbing his arm, it was a comforting thing, more for her than Jack, but it was soothing him as well.
"We'll figure it out," Sam claims.
"We always do." Jack slightly smiled.
"I did take a pain pill, Carter, so I'm really going to be out soon," Jack stated.
"Okay, well, I'll just leave you to it," Sam claimed.
"No, stay," Jack asks.
Sam looks at him, shocked by his request.
"Okay, sir," Sam claimed.
"Don't Sam, it wasn't an order," Jack stated.
"No, I know, I want to," Sam claimed.
Sam laid on top of the covers, Jack pulling her towards him, and she smiles, letting out a deep breath, content with the moment.
20 minutes pass, and Sam expertly unwinds herself from him, leaving him to sleep and returning to Teal'c and Daniel, who expect a full report. Sam simply tells them that Jack feels like he is getting too old and questions if he should be out there. Teal'c and Daniel quickly pass it off as a non-issue and start talking about all the times they had gotten the group into some trouble that could have easily lead to their death. Sam smiles, knowing how true each and every story was. She hoped with time Jack would see that this, too, was just one of those times.
The afternoon wore on, and Sam chose to wake up Jack before it got too late and he'd be up all night.
Jack seemed to be in a better mood bantering with Daniel and Teal'c while Sam watched and laughed at her three best friends. She wished her father was there to help heal Jack, but maybe strangely, this was exactly what the group needed to get back on track.
Five days had passed since Jack had come home; Teal'c and Daniel were at the SGC, leaving Sam alone for the first time with Jack. She had woken up early. Jack had gotten the hang of maneuvering around the house with little help.
Sam sat in the kitchen typing into her laptop the next chapter of her physics book, wondering if and when it would ever be completed. When she started it, she had given herself 5 years and was fast approaching the mark. She wasn't sure where the stipulation came from or what she would do when the 5-year mark came and passed. She seemed to want to type faster than her body and kept making simple mistakes throughout the chapter.
Jack came rolling into the kitchen using his good leg and arm to propel.
"Hiya Carter." Jack smiled.
"Hey, sir," Sam said haphazardly.
"You have breakfast?" Jack asked.
"Not yet," Sam claimed.
"Well, I'll make you some?" Jack claimed.
Sam looked at him, wondering if it was a good idea. Jack read her eyes and claimed.
"It'll be fine, Carter, just some bacon and eggs."
Sam nodded and got back to her typing; less than a minute later, the crash of pans falling into the floor made Sam jump quickly, surveying the area and seeing what caused the noise.
Sam wasn't sure what to say or do about the number of baking pans all over the floor. Sam was quite impressed Jack had managed to fit that many in such a small space.
"A little help here, Carter?" Jack asks.
Sam blushes to realize she shouldn't just be sitting there and goes to pick up the pans. Jack is also grabbing them and sucks a hard breath in when he uses his cast hand, and despite the hard outer shell, bends it in an uncomfortable dropping the pan for a second time.
"You okay?" Sam asks, quickly trying to evaluate the damage.
"I'm fine." he pulls his wrist away.
Sam picks up the pans and asks which he planned to use. Jack pointed it out then said, "Maybe cereal is the better idea."
Sam nodded and put the pans away; she grabbed the milk from his fridge and reached the top shelf of the cabinet, knowing that his favorite was there.
Jack and Sam sat in a comfortable silence as she would write a few words and eat her cereal.
Sam heard a knock at the door and was confused, but Jack looked as if he was waiting for it.
"Can you get it, Carter?" Jack asks.
She nods her head and goes to the door.
She sees a young man that looks familiar, but she can't place him. He is military but doesn't look more than 20, he's not in uniform, but she can tell. She smiles at the man waiting for him to explain.
"Hi, I'm Jason, is this O'Neill residence." He asks.
"Yes," Sam claims, still questioning what's happening.
"Um, the doc has asked me to do some physical therapy with Colonel O'Neill." The man claims.
Sam looks at the man and back at Jack, who is looking at the man knowingly.
Jason shakes Jack's good hand, and Sam can't help but smile at how Jack looks at the man as if he is eyeballing him, letting Jason know that Jack could kill him if he wanted to. Sam was sure Jason was used to the look and didn't say a word until they found a comfortable place to get to work.
Sam had helped Jack, who refused to allow Jason to help him down the steps but didn't mind taking her hands and leaning most of his body weight on her as they went into the living room.
Sam wasn't sure if it was best to leave him alone, but she decided to go back to the kitchen eyeballing the two men. She thought she could get a little bit done, but that didn't work. She was focused on Jack. She could see the annoyance in his eyes when they did something too simple for his taste and the pain when Jason pushed him a bit too far. Jack hadn't even looked over at Sam, but she knew he had to know her eyes were glued to him. After what only seemed to be a few minutes, Jason told Jack he would be there 3 days a week, and Jack rolled his eyes, trying to act like he was perfectly fine.
Sam got the door and saw Jason out before going back to Jack, who looked a little worse for wear.
"Sir, isn't it about time for some pain pills?" Sam asked, knowing full well it was an hour early, but she could see it in his eyes.
"I'm fine, Carter." He gruffed.
"Jack," Sam claimed.
"I said I'm fine." He snapped.
Sam frowned a little and looked at the man's face that said anything but.
"I know," Sam claimed.
Sam noticed for the first time the sweat on his brow. Although the workout wasn't anything she would thinks was taxing, it was probably due to the mix of pain and the amount he was squirming as Jason had helped through the movements. The last thing Sam wanted to do, was tell him what to do, so they sat in silence for a long time before Jack had asked for help to get back to his room.
For 5 weeks, the pattern continues, one of the SG-1 members helping Jack, Jason coming to do therapy, but his muscles, aren't quite normal yet. Jason tells Jack 2 more weeks, and he'll be back to full strength. Jack highly doubts it and has been still taking it rough. Daniel and Sam had been trying to take him out, but he refused more than not. Sam had gotten him to go to the park with her one day, and a few other times, they went through the drive-thru, but Jack thought it was too much of a burden to wheel around.
Although Jack insisted about 3 weeks ago, they didn't help him so. Someone from SG-1 always showed up. Sam knew it was her turn by default; Daniel and Teal'c were going with SG-3 on a mission.
Sam knocked on Jack's door. He was able to walk short distances, but Sam was surprised to see him on his feet when he answered the door.
"Two more weeks," Jack said.
"Two more weeks." Sam smiled.
"So Carter, how was work?" Jack asks.
Sam smiles brightly, it was such an innocent question, but she couldn't help but want to come home like this every day.
"Oh, you know the usual. Daniel and Teal'c gallivanting across the stars. SG-4 ate some type of fungus on PX3-4567, and needless to say, they all came back thinking that they were being chased by a giant cat, back through the gate; nothing was on the MALP." Sam smiled.
Jack laughed.
Jack was able to reach the kitchen before sitting down at the table.
"I have some steaks finishing in the oven," Jack claims.
"You didn't have to," Sam stated.
"I did, you and Daniel and T, have been way overdoing it for me, Carter. I'm going to miss it." Jack claims.
Sam looks at him, and although he was trying to stay light, she knew that she too would miss all of this. It was now June, and Sam would miss all the late-night sitting on Jack's porch, sometimes they'd have the grill going. Other times, they would just listen to music or look at the stars. One night while all four of them were there, it was a meteor shower, and they all just started up into space as if they were little kids who've never seen a shooting star before. There were times where she would cuddle up close to him and watch a movie. One time she fell asleep and woke up to his hands tangled in her hair. Another time Daniel and Teal'c had pulled out Yahtzee, and Teal'c won every round.
Although this isn't how she wanted it to happen, the team somehow pulled even closer than ever, she knew they would all have these memories and have this time, but soon enough, SG-1 would be good to go back through the wormhole, taking down bad guys one planet at a time. She can't say she didn't want to that again, she adored her job, but this being with Jack and her best friends, well, it was more than she could ask for.
The timer goes off, flinging Sam out of her thoughts and looking over to Jack, who pulls out the extra-thick T-bone steaks and pulls a salad from the fridge, and mashed potatoes she hadn't noticed sitting in the pot.
Jack plates everything, gingerly using his hurt hand and trying to stay as still as possible standing up.
The meal is eaten, and Sam isn't sure what to suggest, so she is thankful when Jack pulls out a deck of cards, and they start playing multiple games. Sam isn't sure whose winning she lost count after Jack suggested they play go fish.
Later, later than Sam expected, and although she could take off the next day, she wouldn't. It was past midnight before she realized the time.
"Carter, I didn't mean to keep you," Jack said ask he looked at the time himself.
"It's fine, I'll be fine," Sam says with a yawn.
"You're welcome to stay." Jack smiles.
Sam knows it, she has plenty of times before, and decides she'll take him up on the offer, and goes to the spare room rummaging for some pajamas and her toothbrush and walked over to the main bathroom. She walks over to Jack's closed door, not sure what she's waiting to hear or wants to hear. She just feels she should be there. Then, there it is, almost as she knew. She heard Jack crying. She has seen tears fall from his face a few times throughout the years, and she heard him cry once when Daniel told her to leave him alone. It was Charlie's birthday. Then it hit her, she had forgotten, today he would have been 16 years old. Her heart breaks for the man, and she wished he would have said something.
She lightly knocks on his door.
"I'm fine Carter, go away." Jack gruffs out.
Sam ignores him and opens the door to see Jack O'Neill red-faced, crying into his hands.
She wasn't sure how the loss of a child felt, but there were still days when she cried for the loss of her mother.
"Jack, I'm so sorry. Why didn't you say something?" Sam asks.
He looks at her, his eyes empty voids.
Sam just looks at him, holding him close, "Don't for one second think you should be over it. You never will be." Sam claims.
Jack nods his head.
"Do you want to go see him?" Sam asks.
Jack looks at her, not sure how to respond, and suddenly he realizes it will bring him comfort and nods, pulling a pair of jeans, and Sam goes back to the spare room pulling on her previous clothes.
Sam listens to Jack's directions to the graveyard, the only words said on the trip to it. It was 2am and they shouldn't really be there, the gates are locked but Sam picks the lock and opens the gate closing back. She helps Jack carefully walk to the gravestone; she's never gone with him before. She notices even as late as it was, some other people were meandering around the place, and as they walked up, Jack sees Sara at the site. They don't frequently, hardly at all ever but, when he sees her there, they both break down in sobs, holding each other, and Sam feels awkward in the presence of this event.
Sam doesn't know how long it's been, but Sarah leaves. Leaving Jack at the tombstone that was his child's. Sam put his hand on Jack Shoulder, and he leans into her, looking a the name and dates etched in stone.
"I dream he's still alive more often than the nightmares anymore," Jack claims.
Sam smiles.
"I know it's different, but sometimes I see my mom and dreams, and it makes me remember all the good times. It makes me happy." Sam claims.
"Yeah, Charlie does that for me too," Jack claims.
After a few more minutes, Jack slowly turns back to Sam's car, and she realizes it's time to go.
She helps him into the car and drives him back home.
