You know the drill. Fran betas. Dani, Ariel, and Gemma preread. You make me smile!
I wake up the next morning to two unexpected things: my gun staring at me from my nightstand and clanging coming from my driveway.
I know I put the gun there last night before falling asleep, but in those few seconds between consciousness, it had slipped my mind, and now it makes me jump a mile in my bed.
Once my heartbeat slows to a normal rhythm, I hear the clanging again and assume it's Edward working on my truck.
Judging by the light in my room, I can guess it's mid-morning, and I flop back down onto my mattress to close my eyes one final time to find the will to get up and start the day.
My bed has become one of my favorite places here in Forks. There's not much to it. It's a full size, as anything else would take up too much space in the tiny room, but the sheets are soft, and the comforter and pillows lull me into a restful sleep on nights where my racing thoughts don't keep me awake.
The sky is dark and gloomy as we near the end of September, and as much as I want to stay in bed all day, it's hard to ignore Edward and the loud protests of my truck for much longer.
I drag myself to the bathroom before heading out to check on Edward.
My gun stays where it is.
When I look in the mirror as I'm brushing my teeth, I stare at my reflection. Wild hair from sleep aside, I can still see the girl with a vengeance who was staring at me in the mirror last night.
She's there, just a little sleepy.
Maybe she'll come out more as the day goes on.
Sighing, I reach for my robe hanging on the back of the bathroom door. It had gotten a little chilly last night, so the plaid pajama pants I have on are perfect for now with my light gray robe. The curls on my head are easily tamed with a healthy dose of dry shampoo.
My poor neighbor is fixing my truck for free; the least I can do is not terrify him when he sees my morning Medusa hair.
I walk out a few minutes later with two cups of coffee.
"Out here long?" I ask and place his cup on the railing of the front porch. Edward turns at the sound of my voice and nods at the cup waiting for him.
I'm not sure when I noticed the way he takes his coffee, but I know. It must have been yesterday when I was walking past his cabin before we headed to the store.
Shaking his head, he reaches for the coffee and nods in thanks. "Just wanted another look under her hood before I get started."
"Shouldn't you take her to dinner first?" I ask, taking a slow sip to hide the small smile on my lips.
Edward stops mid-sip.
"Was that – " He pauses. "Was that a joke?"
I laugh at the shocked look on his face.
"I think so?"
We laugh together under the mid-morning clouds.
:) A few of you have asked me how long this fic plans on being, and I can't give an exact number at this moment. Since this is a Drabble fic, it flows differently than other chapters, so my outline for this story isn't marked chapter by chapter like I do with my non-Drabble fics. I have a bulleted list of everything I need to happen in this story, and I'm just checking them off as I go. I hope that helps for now, and when I've finished writing the whole story, I'll be able to give you a number then :)
See you tomorrow!
