Summer is here, sunshine at last! Anyway, welcome back to another chapter. Sorry if you waited long, but when life gives you lemon, you make apple pie with a hint of lemon. Anyway, have fun!

Chapter 12: Knight of the Shadows

Phantom was in the Watchtower, since it was his turn for security duty. It was boring, but it was better than Math homework.

He was humming a Dumpty Humpty song as he looked at the monitors, looking for any emergencies around the planet. He suddenly looked up and saw the only resident of the Watchtower, J'onn J'onnz. The Martian was staring out to space, his eyes cold and blank.

"You okay there, J'onn?" Danny said as he walked towards the Martian.

The Martian turned back to the halfa, his gaze still emotionless. Phantom could see something in the alien's eye; loneliness.

"I am fine, Danny," J'onn replied as he turned back to the moon.

Phantom shifted a bit, feeling awkward all of the sudden. Out of all his allies, J'onn J'onnz was the most complicated. He was just so empty and sad, even with his expressionless face. Batman was easier to talk to than J'onn.

"I am sorry for not being conversable," J'onn said, causing Phantom to look at him in shock.

"You know it's consider rude to read someone's mind, right?" Phantom asked.

"Forgive me, but it was normal in Mars," J'onn said in a sad tone as he turned back to the window. Danny followed his gaze and saw the planet Mars.

The awkward atmosphere just got more awkward.

"…Sorry," Phantom mumbled as he looked down.

"You have nothing to apologize for, Danny," J'onn said with what sounded like a sad tone. "I am just…homesick."

Phantom didn't know what to say. He never knew what it was like to feel what J'onn went through, losing his family and then his home.

"I know it's tough…and I don't know how you're feeling," Phantom said uncomfortably. "But know that-."

Whatever he was going to say was interrupted when they heard an alarm. Surprised, Phantom flew towards the monitors and saw trouble happening in the Museum in England.

"Wanna check it out?" Phantom asked as he turned to J'onnz.

Later…

Batman dodged as a sword almost sliced his head off. He threw a batarang at the walking armor. He quickly jumped away as the projectile exploded.

Magic. More troublesome than the Joker.

This whole mess started when a store owner was found dead in his antiques shop. He thought the man died from old age, but then an acquaintance of him told him otherwise.

Jason Blood, a man who was alive during the time of Merlin, said that the man who died was a friend of his. When Jason told him that the old man was actually twenty years old, Batman's eyes widened slightly, indicating that he was very surprise.

Jason told him that this was the work of Morgan Le Fay, a sorceress looking for a magic artifact that was used by Merlin himself.

The two traced Morgan to an old castle, which was turned into a museum. Instead of finding Morgan Le Fay and the magical artifact, what they found was a trap that caused the armors to come to life and attacked them.

And now here he was, fighting alongside Etrigan the Demon, the demon that was bonded to Jason for all eternity.

Etrigan spewed out fire to melt the incoming armors, welding them together.

"This is taking forever. If this keep up, we will catch the witch never," Etrigan said as he grabbed the welded armors and threw it to the incoming armors.

A knight with a mace sneaked up behind Etrigan and was about to smash his head in. Batman was about to warn him when a black and white blur smashed the armor. Etrigan and Batman stared at the newcomer.

"Seriously, I get the most boring job in the world while you fight a renaissance faire," Phantom said as he fired at the knights. "How can that be fair?"

He then spotted Etrigan, who was fighting the knights.

"Friend of yours?" Phantom asked to Batman, who merely nodded. "You have some interesting friends."

J'onn phased through the wall and towards a chandelier and undid the chains. It fell towards the last group of knights, smashing them to bits.

"Didn't knew museums were so entertaining," Phantom said as the four gathered. "So what's the situation here, and who's your friend?"

"This is Etrigan the Demon," Batman announced as he reached his communicator. "An acquaintance of mine."

"First an alien, then a ghost and now a demon," Phantom said with a deadpanned expression. "You have very weird friends."

Batman ignored him as he contacted some available help. After what they just been through, they're going to require a lot of help.

Later…

"You want us to what?" Flash asked in disbelief as he sat on a boulder. The only ones who were available were Flash and Wonder Woman since the others were either out of reach or busy. "Look for this Morgan lady and stop her from taking the what?"

"The Philosopher's Stone," Batman answered. "It was an artifact created by Merlin, said to hold incredible power, so the legends says."

"Where do we find this stone?" Wonder Woman asked.

"The stone is our unconcern, the witch is our real concern," Etrigan said.

"But if we find the stone first, we can find Morgan," Danny suggested. "Do you know where it is?"

"From the looks of it, this was the only place the stone could possibly be," Batman said. "Morgan seems to be the only one who knew where this stone is hidden."

"So let's go find her," Flash said.

"It is not so easy, mortal. She has evaded me because of that enchanted bauble," Etrigan said.

"Well with a face like that, I kinda know why she avoids you," Flash muttered, though Etrigan still heard him. With a snarl, he jumped towards Flash, surprising the red clad hero.

The demon landed in front of the startled hero, who stumbled back and tripped on a rock. Etrigan leaned over Flash and growled, revealing sharp teeth.

"Uh…please don't eat my soul," Flash said as he backed away.

Etrigan then backed away and snorted.

"Smooth," Phantom commented as he helped Flash up. "So what are we going to do about Morgan the Fay or whatever she's called?"

"I may have a solution," J'onn said, causing everyone to look at him. "I could telepathically locate her, so we'll know where her next move will be."

"You can do that?" Danny asked, surprised.

"I can," J'onn said with a nod. "I only need to focus."

J'onn closed his eyes then focused, broadening his mind and began searching. He could feel the minds of every living thing that reached his mind. After a few more minutes, he finally detected a mind that felt hundreds of years old.

He searched her mind and found out her two possible destination. Before he could end the contact, he felt something forcing into his mind. With a scream, he fell unconscious to the ground.

"J'ONN!" Phantom, Flash and Wonder Woman exclaimed as they circled the fallen Martian.

"J'onn! Wake up man!" Flash exclaimed as they all shouted his name.

J'onn's eyelids fluttered open as he heard his name being called. When he opened his eyes, he was shocked to find himself in a familiar red skies. He stood up and found himself back in his old house, standing on the balcony.

"What is this…?" J'onn said in shock.

"J'onn," a feminine voice called from behind him. He turned and saw his wife, well and alive. "Welcome home."

She took his hand and led him inside. J'onn looked around the room, seeing the familiar decorations and Martian designs of the room. This shouldn't be real, this ended years ago, yet here he was, standing in his home.

"You seem tense, J'onn," his wife said with a gentle smile before she gestured at a strange plant on a desk. "Would you to tend to your plants. They always help you relax."

"Yes…they help me relax," J'onn said absently as he walked towards the plant and hovered his hand over it. The bulbous leaves then lighted light blue and a small smile appeared on J'onn's face.

"Father!" two voices exclaimed, causing J'onn to turn around. He saw two Martian children running towards him. The two hugged him around the waist, smiling widely. "Welcome home, father!"

"I'm home…" J'onn said before he finally gave in. He was back home, where he belongs. He morphed back into his real form and hugged his children. "I am finally home!"

His happy homecoming was disrupted when a flaming portal suddenly appeared in front of them. They watched as Etrigan walked forward, glaring at the family.

"You weak fool, this is nothing but an illusion! Break free from the witch and your delusion!" Etrigan shouted.

J'onn glared at Etrigan and shielded his family. He wasn't going to lose his family again.

"Stay back, monster!" J'onn shouted.

Etrigan roared and charged at J'onn, who also charged at the demon. He fought the demon with all he had, protecting his family, when Etrigan grabbed the plant and used it to smash the Martian's head in.

J'onn woke with a gasp as he sat up, holding his head. He looked around and found himself not on Mars with his family, but on the ground with Phantom, Flash and Wonder Woman hovering in front of him, looking relieved.

"You okay there, J'onn?" Phantom aske as he and Flash helped the alien up. "You had us worried there for a minute."

J'onn looked around. He saw Batman behind them along with Etrigan, who gave him a distrustful look. He then looked at the three heroes in front of him.

"I am…fine," J'onn said in a low tone before looking at them. "I know where she is heading."

As he told him about Morgan's plans, Etrigan gave him a distrustful look, something that Batman noticed.

Later…

"I'll never understand why rich people would waste time partying," Phantom commented as he, Flash and Wonder Woman stopped in front of a big mansion with people line up. It seems to be a costume party because there were a lot of grownups dressed in ridiculous clothing.

"Don't tell me you hadn't party before," Flash asked with a skeptical look.

"The only parties I've ever attended were birthday parties in grade school," Phantom said with a deadpanned tone.

"Sorry I asked," Flash said as the three marched towards the front door.

The group was separated into two teams since Morgan Le Fay seems to be after two people who took the stone. Two retired archeologists who names Phantom doesn't really remember took the stone and now Morgan wants to find them.

Batman, J'onnz and Etrigan went to track down the other one while they went for the rich one.

They were about to enter the mansion when the big buff guard stopped them.

"Hold it, this is a private party, invites only," the guard said.

"Buddy, we're heroes, we need to talk to the host," Flash said. "Urgent 'save the world' business."

"Yeah, those guys are heroes too," the guard said, pointing behind Flash. They turned and saw nerds in costumes dressed up like the Flash, Batman and other heroes.

"Wow, really convincing," Phantom said sarcastically. "Didn't know you had a twin, Flash."

"Please move, we are in a hurry," Wonder Woman said.

"I don't think so, babe," the security guard said as he tried to push Wonder Woman away. "Now go crash someone else's par-!"

He didn't get to finish as Wonder Woman grabbed his hand and flipped him away. Angry, the other guards tried to stop her, but they were no match for her. Before things could escalate further, someone stopped them.

It was an old man with gray hair slicked backwards wearing a fancy robe and holding a polished cane. He spotted Wonder Woman and grinned and he circled around her, like a tiger preying on a deer.

"How can I refuse a goddess?" the creepy man said as he took Wonder Woman's hand and kissed it.

"Creepy," Phantom whispered to Flash.

"You said it," Flash said as he led Wonder Woman inside. One of the guards was about to close the door when Flash zipped in. "We're with her."

Phantom stuck his tongue on the guard before they entered the raving party. Lights of different colors were flash, loud music that hurt his head, a lot of people dancing and drinking a lot of expensive alcohol.

"Rich people are weird," Phantom commented as he stared at the confusing decorations. A vase that shaped like a melting glob, why would anyone want that?

"Who knows?" Flash said with a shrug as they stopped in front of a statue.

"This is a Greek Statue of Athena that I found during my time as an archeologist," the creepy guy said, trying to impress Wonder Woman.

"That's Roman," Wonder Woman corrected, causing the guy to give her a curious look.

"She's a major in Greek/Roman Mythology," Phantom explained, covering up for Wonder Woman.

"I see," the guy said in a tone that sounded like he didn't care. "Now, you told me you're looking for the source of my success? Well, just follow me."

The three followed the guy through a hallway. On the way there, Flash noticed a Jacuzzi full of four sexy girls dressed in a bikini.

"Yeah, you go on ahead, me and Phantom will check this room," Flash said as he grabbed Danny by the back of his shirt and drag him away.

"Hey! Let go!" Danny exclaimed as Flash drag him towards the women. "Why do I have to go?"

"So you can experience the joy of being a man," Flash replied as they stopped in front of the ladies. "Hello there, ladies. Mind if we join you?"

A few minutes later, Phantom was sandwiched between two women, who were playing with his hair and saying that he was cute. Flash was busy flirting with the other two women, telling how he stopped a fire in a second.

"So is your hair natural or bleached?" one woman asked as she twirled a white lock.

"N-n-natural," Phantom stammered.

"You're so cute!" the other woman said as she grabbed Phantom's neck and nuzzled him. "I might just have fun with you tonight."

Before Phantom could reply to that, there was a big explosion. Surprised, they saw Wonder Woman wrestling a giant, ugly monster.

"Excuse us ladies," Phantom said as he floated off the ground. "But duty calls."

"Pardon us," Flash said as he turned followed the monster with Phantom beside him.

They reached Wonder Woman, who was pulling on the monster's tail, trying to overpower it. Phantom fired at the monster, causing it to be distracted. Wonder Woman used the opportunity to overpower the monster and throw him by the tail.

"Hey, where's that rich guy?" Flash asked, appearing beside Wonder Woman.

"That's him," Wonder Woman pointed at the monster.

"That's him?" Phantom said in disbelief. "Rich people are so weird."

"The witch did something to her," Wonder Woman explained as she threw her lasso at the monster, trying to subdue it. "She was trying to take the stone!"

Phantom and Flash then noticed the square rock attached to Wonder Woman's belt.

"That's the Philosopher's Stone? I thought it'd be like a gem or something," Phantom commented as Wonder Woman was pulled by her lasso and thrown to a wall. The stone was skidding on the floor towards the monster.

Just as it was about to grab the stone, a red blur appeared and grab the stone, much to its confusion.

"Looking for this, big fella?" Flash asked, holding the stone. The monster roared and run towards Flash. "Phantom, hot potato!"

He threw the stone towards Phantom, who caught it. The monster switched targets and ran towards Phantom, who flew away, showing the stone.

"Come and get it, ugly!" Phantom exclaimed to the monster.

The monster roared in anger as it chased after Phantom, trying to get the stone. Just when it was about to grab him, Phantom disappeared, much to its confusion. It turned to the side and saw Wonder Woman flying towards it. Before it could react, the Amazon punched it in the face followed by another punch and then an uppercut, sending it flying out the house, which was now in ruins.

"Well that was a fun party," Phantom said as he appeared beside Wonder Woman, holding the stone. "And we got a party bag."

"So where's that Morgan lady?" Flash asked before they were all blindsided by a bright light. They slammed on the wall as a lady wearing a gold mask and dress in fancy robes appear from the shadows.

"Right here," Morgan said as she used her magic and levitated the stone towards her. "Thank you for getting the stone for me."

Suddenly the windows were smashed and Etrigan appear.

"Not so fast, witch!" he roared before spewing fire at Morgan, who backed away to avoid getting burn. J'onn appeared from the floor and grab the stone.

"No! Give me the stone!" Morgan exclaimed as she tried to attack Batman, only to have Etrigan block her way.

"J'onn, go and make sure she doesn't get the stone," Batman said as he prepared some batarangs.

J'onn was about to do that when he suddenly freeze, looking at the stone with a blank look, like he was having an internal struggle with himself.

"J'onn!" Phantom shouted as he noticed that J'onn was moving towards Morgan.

"The Martian has been bewitched!" Etrigan shouted. Morgan took his distraction as an opportunity to attack him, blasting him with her magic.

"J'onn!" Batman exclaimed, snapping the Martian out of his thoughts, causing him to quickly back away, holding the stone securely.

Morgan looked around and saw herself surrounded by the heroes, who were ready to take her down, and with her current strength, she might not take them down. And besides, the Martian was under her influence.

"This isn't over, mortals," he said before teleporting away.

Etrigan stood up, shaking his head before glaring at J'onn, who handed the stone to Batman.

"Let's go and secure the stone," Batman said as they all agreed and exited the once fancy mansion.

Outside, the rich guy was on a bush in his underwear, groaning in pain. The window behind him open and an annoyed person glared at him.

"Hey, keep it down will you?!" the man exclaimed before slamming the window shut.

Watchtower…

Phantom watched as Batman placed the Philosopher's Stone in a highly secured, high-tech vault.

"There, Morgan won't get the stone," Batman said as he turned to Etrigan.

"The witch will get past your silly mortal toys," Etrigan said.

"Geez, why don't you cracked a smile with your gargoyle face," Flash said, trying to lighten the mood. Sadly, Etrigan did not find it funny and was about to attack Flash when Phantom got on his way.

"Woah, no need to be violent here," he said, trying to calm the situation.

"Don't get in my way, Halfling," Etrigan said, causing Phantom's eyes to widen in shock.

"W-w-what?" Phantom said as he backed away. Flash, thinking that he insulted Phantom, got in Etrigan's face.

"Hey, we already got the stone and Morgan won't get it, so why don't you go back to your horror movie?" Flash exclaimed before stomping away, taking the shocked halfa with him.

"He didn't mean that," Wonder Woman said to the demon.

"Do you think I care?" Etrigan said before exiting the room.

"Can you believe that jerk?" Flash exclaimed as he and Phantom were standing in the coffee room, getting a snack. "And I thought Batman was bad."

"Yeah…" Phantom said, still distracted. First it was Hades and now Etrigan. Does every supernatural being know his secret? "Just glad that this is finally over."

"Cheers to that," Flash said as he handed Phantom a bottle of soda.

"By the way, did you notice J'onn acting weird today?" Phantom asked.

"He always act weird," Flash replied.

"I mean weirder than usual," Phantom said. "Ever since he did that mind search, he's been…I don't know, out of it."

"Maybe he's not feeling well," Flash said before the alarms suddenly sounded.

"What the heck?" Flash exclaimed as he and Phantom rushed out the room and towards the main hall, where they saw was filled with stone demons.

"Was there a garden gnome sale?" Phantom exclaimed as he fired at the stone monsters. "If so, then where's the receipt? I'm returning them!"

Batman threw some explosives to the monsters while Wonder Woman was using her lasso to grab one and use it as a wrecking ball. Etrigan was punching the monsters to rubbles and growled.

"These servants of stone are unending!" he exclaimed before he noticed Flash. "Flash, levitate the fiends with your tempo around me!"

"Huh?" Flash said with a confused expression.

"Gr…Run in a circle really fast!" Etrigan explained.

"Ooh. That's easy!" Flash said with a grin before he started running around the room really fast. Wind started picking up the stone monsters while the other heroes tried to remain on the ground; Wonder Woman was gripping on the ground, Batman held to a nearby pillar and Phantom phased his feet through the ground.

Etrigan stood at the center of the whirlwind, looking at the stone monsters. He then spewed fire in the air. The fire merged with the wind, creating a ring of fire that destroyed the stone monsters.

Once they were all smithereens, Flash stopped running, and his uniform smoking.

"Well that was hot," Flash said as he patted the smoke off his uniform.

"Is everyone accounted for?" Batman said as everyone gathered around.

"Hang on, where's J'onn?" Phantom said as he looked around the place.

Batman narrowed his eyes before running out the room, the others following him. They entered the security place where they kept the stone and watched as Batman opened the vault, only to find the stone gone.

"I warned you that he will betray us," Etrigan said causing Batman to glare at him.

"Where did J'onn go?" Wonder Woman asked.

"Back to his new master," Etrigan said before the alarms activated again.

"Now what?" Flash groaned before they ran to the main room.

Later…

In Central City, the team watched as a giant castle stood in the middle of the streets. It was made of cold stone and there were gargoyles on the ledges.

"I'm guessing Morgan's there," Phantom said, causing everyone to look at him. "What? Just trying to lighten the mood."

"Let's go," Batman ordered.

Inside, Morgan was guiding her son through his new castle. J'onn was standing still near the throne, holding the Philosopher's Stone.

"Mother, those buildings are casting light and noises near my castle," Mordred complained.

"That is unforgivable," Morgan said before looking at J'onn. "But once we have the stone, no one will bother you again."

She walked towards J'onn and held a hand out to him. J'onn stared at her hand before at the stone and then at her.

"Will you fulfill your promise?" J'onn asked in a hesitant tone.

"Of course I will," Morgan said. "Now give me the stone, and all your wishes will come true."

Slowly, J'onn was handing the stone to Morgan and she was about to grab it when Phantom shot from the ground and took the stone, much to their shock.

"Sorry, but I can't let you get this," he said before dodging the magic blasts Morgan was shooting. "Hey! Calm down, granny! You might get crow's feet."

Morgan growled and started firing more rapidly. Phantom just flew around the room, which was getting destroyed.

"Enough!" Morgan exclaimed in anger before casting a spell on the carpet. The carpet started levitating before chasing after Phantom. The carpet wrapped Phantom around, who let the stone go out of shock.

Mordred saw the stone near him and was about to grab it when a red blur grab him and the next thing he knew, he was hanging by his shirt on a torch hook, Flash grinning at him.

"Put me down, peasant!" he exclaimed as he wave his arms and legs.

"Calm down, junior," Flash said with a grin. "You're in time out."

"Mother!" Mordred exclaimed, getting the sorceress' attention.

"Get away from my son!" she exclaimed and blasted Flash towards a wall. He slammed into it and was about to run back at her when hands appeared from the wall and pinned him to the wall.

"What the heck!" he exclaimed before noticing the hands. "Gross!"

Morgan was then pulled by a lasso tied to her waist and turned to see Wonder Woman pulling her. She growled before casting a spell on the lasso. Without warning, Wonder Woman's lasso turned into a giant snake and attacked her.

Morgan was then blasted off her feet because of Batman's explosive batarangs. She turned and fired at the Dark Knight, who dodged and jumped on a table before throwing another batarang. Morgan move to the side before casting a spell on the table.

Batman was surprised when the table suddenly moved and the legs grew longer. He jumped off it and threw four batarangs to the legs, but it deflected the projectiles and the legs extended and grab Batman, wrapping around him like a snake.

"J'onn, give me the stone, quickly!" Morgan exclaimed, looking at J'onn, who picked up the stone. He was about to walk to her when Etrigan jumped from the ceiling and stood between him. With a roar, he roared and pounced on J'onn, sending the two tumbling.

"Do not believe the witch!" he exclaimed angrily. "She will destroy you, like she had destroyed me!"

"I don't care!" J'onn exclaimed before charging at Etrigan. "I must see my family again!"

He punched the demon in the face and Etrigan counted with a punch to the gut. He then grabbed J'onn's head and kneed him on the face. He then started beating J'onn, creating a crater to where J'onn was standing.

The Martian slowly tighten his grip on the Philosopher's Stone and used it blindsided Etrigan on the chin, knocking him out. He stood up and walked towards Morgan, who has freed his son. He suddenly stopped and turned to look at Etrigan, who looked…sad as he laid there on the ground, looking like he failed.

"Hurry, the stone," Morgan said, shaking J'onn out of his thoughts.

J'onn walked towards before stopping in front of him, his expression blank as Morgan held her hand out. Just as she was about to grab the stone, J'onn's fist closed around it, crushing it to pieces, much to Morgan and Mordred's shock.

"What have you done?" Morgan demanded as Mordred kneeled on the ground, grabbing the dust and pieces of rocks.

"Something I should have done earlier," J'onn replied.

Morgan growled and was about to attack, but felt herself out of magic. Seeing that she doesn't need to fight them, she decided to retreat.

"This isn't the last you'll see of me," Morgan said as she grabbed her son and teleported away. Slowly, the castle disappeared and everyone was freed from Morgan's trap.

Everyone groaned as Etrigan was replaced by Jason Blood. Phantom stood up and rubbed his head as Wonder Woman removed the lasso off her.

"I got beaten by a carpet," Phantom said with a face palm. "Talk about embarrassing."

"Everyone," J'onn said, getting their attention. They saw the remorseful look on his face. "My apologies. Because I yearned to see my old home and family, I almost destroyed my current one. I cannot undo my mistake. And for that, I resign from the Justice League."

"What!?" Phantom, Wonder Woman and Flash exclaimed before Flash appeared on his side. "But J'onn, it wasn't your fault!"

"Yes it was, I let myself be fooled by her and almost destroyed you guys," J'onn said before he started walking away. "Etrigan was right. I am weak."

"Wait!" Jason exclaimed, getting J'onn's attention. "Whatever Etrigan told you, he was wrong about you. You are not weak. If I was as strong as you, I would never have let that witch trick me."

J'onn stared at Jason, who then turned around and started walking away.

"And now I must walk again until this curse is gone," he said.

"Do you think he will find peace?" Wonder Woman asked in a sad tone.

"I don't know, but I'm sure he will," J'onn said as Jason disappeared in the night. He then turned to Phantom. "Danny, back at the Watchtower, what were you about to say?"

Phantom turned to him and remembered about that.

"Oh right," Phantom said with a grin before placing a hand on his shoulder. "I don't know what you're going through, but know that you're friends will help you, no matter what."

J'onn looked at him before looking at Wonder Woman, Flash and Batman before giving a small smile.

Meanwhile, Batman was looking at Phantom with narrow eyes. Etrigan called Phantom a Halfling, just like how Hades commented about being dead and alive. He decided to do some research later, to see what Phantom really was.

And there you go, Batman is finally suspicious…well more suspicious of Danny Phantom. Will he find out the Phantom's secret and what will happen to him once Batman founds out. Anyway, sorry for the long wait, very busy and very lazy. That, and I was trying to type a lot of stories at once; that was a bad idea. So yeah, don't do that.
