Secrets of the Past IIb

Chapter 3

Lisa stood in the family trailer looking at her daughter Evie. Evie just finished explained where she had been until almost midnight.

"That's what you were doing tonight?!" Lisa exclaimed, "Evie Atwood you could have been killed!"

"Mom if Matt and I hadn't done what we did, A bunch of horses and Pine Hollow would have been crippled. And you know the cops couldn't do anything until something happened."

"Be that as it may," said Lisa, "it was still dangerous! What if they had had guns?!"

"They did have guns." Said Evie, "But we still kicked their butts!"

"Oh well, that changes everything." Said Lisa sarcastically. Before she could continue, she heard snickering behind her.

Lisa turned and looked at her husband.

"What is so funny, Rafael?"

"You," replied Rafael still chuckling, "My dear you're not fooling anyone."

"What do you mean by that?" asked Lisa

"You know full well that if the roles were reversed, you'd have been up there at that barn tonight kicking criminal butt before anyone could stop you!" said Rafael with a look that dared Lisa to contradict him.

Lisa looked up at Rafael barely hiding her own smile.

"Rafa," she said, "You're no help at all."

"Alright Evie," said Lisa admitting defeat, "you can go."

Evie smiled and went to bed.

Lisa and Rafael watched their daughter as she disappeared through the curtain.

"She really is my daughter." Chuckled Lisa. Rafael nodded as he put his arm around her.

"Right down to your love for adventure and sleuthing." He said

The next day, Evie was in the big top practicing for the show that night, when Matt came walking in. She motioned him over to where she was.

"Were your parents too hard on you for last night?" she asked him

"Nah," he said, "They know what Scanlon is capable of. And once they heard what he tried to do at Pine Hollow last night, I had their full support, Yours?"

Evie grinned.

"My mother tried to be," she said, "But my dad reminded her that she would have done the exact same thing, and he's right. When she was a kid, she and her gang of friends were always running around snooping into any mystery that came along."

"Well," said Matt, "now we just have to be on the lookout for whatever Scanlon and Scheckter are going to try now that they know their bullying tactics won't work."

Evie nodded.

"What do you suppose Scanlon wants with Pine Hollow anyway?" she asked plopping down next to Matt and taking off her ballet shoes.

"I don't know for sure," said Matt, "But you can bet the riding school and stables would be gone as fast as he could tear them down."

"I don't doubt that at all." Nodded Evie, "So it's the location he's interested in."

"I think so." Said Matt. Evie put on her regular shoes then tied the laces of her ballet shoes together and hung them over her shoulder. Then she and Matt walked out of the big top. Matt could practically see the wheels turning in her mind.

After several seconds she spoke.

"Matt," she said, "where do you suppose Scanlon is staying in town?"

Matt shrugged.

"Knowing him he's probably staying in the nicest room at the nicest hotel in town." he said

"Then we should go there to look for evidence." Said Evie, "as soon as I change clothes."

She disappeared into her family trailer to change while Matt made himself comfortable on one of the lounge chairs outside the trailer.

A few minutes later Evie emerged.

"Evie," said Matt, "We need to make a stop at my house before we go."

"Okay," said Evie.

Just as they turned to go, who should they run in to, coming around the corner, of one of the trailers, but the camp gossip Gloria.

"Well," she said, "What's going on here?"

Evie looked annoyed

"None of your business, Gloria." She grumbled. Evie grabbed Matt's hand and pulled him along.

"Come on Matt," said Evie, "Let's get out of here."

Evie practically dragged Matt to the trail head.

"I take it you don't get along with her," said Matt

"Well, we're not feuding or anything like that," said Evie, "it's just that Gloria is a huge gossip who has started more rumors in our camp than anyone else in the history of our clan. She even had everyone thinking my parents weren't legally married once."

"Oh brother." Said Matt

Evie nodded.

"No telling what she could have people thinking about us if we're not careful when she's around."

"Got it," Matt nodded

A few minutes later they arrived at Matt's house. He led Evie upstairs to his room. when they walked in, Evie saw a Compound bow case with a big red bow on it sitting on the couch.

Matt pointed to it.

"That's for you from me." He said with a smile.

Evie opened and her eyes widened.

Inside was a brand-new top of the line, green and black, compound bow and a matching quiver.

"Oh Matt, thank you," she said excitedly, "But how did you afford this?"

"I'm sponsored by an Archery company that is always sending me new equipment," Explained Matt, "When I got this set this morning, I decided to give it to you."

"Thank you, I love it!" she smiled. She put down the bow and gave Matt a big hug.

Matt hugged her back.

"I'm glad you like it." he said.

Matt got on his computer and in a few minutes identified the most luxurious hotel in town, Willow Creek Suites it was a picturesque hotel over looking the creek near a beautiful little waterfall.

Matt and Evie decided to take their bows and arrows with them, but knowing they couldn't just walk into a hotel carrying them. they put them in their cases and hid the cases inside of two large duffle bags that Matt pulled out of his closet.

Once they were ready, they headed down the stairs and out the door. Just as Matt stepped out the door, he was blindsided by a haymaker. Matt hit the ground holding his bleeding nose.

Evie turned to see what had happened and was first shocked and then furious at who she saw standing there.

"JASON" she yelled, at her boyfriend of about a week, "HAVE YOU LOST YOUR MIND?!"
