Chapter 4
Evie reached inside one of the duffle bags and pulled out a small towel. She put it on Matt's nose and tilted his head back, while glaring at Jason the whole time.
Jason went from looking very upset to looking a little scared. He had never seen Evie this mad before.
Matt let his adrenaline flow speeding up his metabolism and allowing himself to heal faster. He felt his nose going back to normal.
As he was getting to his feet Evie poured some water from her metal bottle onto the towel so Matt could clean himself up.
"Are you okay?" she asked.
He nodded as he finished wiping his face off.
Evie turned to Jason and her glare intensified
"I'll deal with you, later." she growled, "Come on Matt we've got things to do."
She grabbed Matt's arm and dragged him off down the street.
As soon as they were out of sight of Jason and the house, Evie and Matt turned off the street and headed off through the stand of trees to Diablo's hollow. When they got there, they called Wisteria and Gustdance. Slinging the duffle bags over their shoulders by the straps, they mounted up.
They knew that there was a branch off the main trail that passed right behind the property of the Willow Creek Suites. Went they got to the property line they dismounted and let their equine friends go. The horses didn't go very far. They simply went a few feet away and started grazing on some fresh grass.
Evie and Matt exchanged a smile. It was obvious that Wisteria and Gustdance fully intended to wait for them.
They turned and headed toward the hotel. When they reached the front door. Evie suddenly flattened herself against the outside wall and motioned for Matt to do the same.
"There's someone at the front desk!" she whispered
Matt looked. It was an attractive brunette in her early twenties. Her name tag said Claire.
As split second later a tall man in a security uniform walked into the lobby.
"Oh great," said Evie, "A security guard, now how are supposed to get in there?"
Matt smiled at her.
"Wait for it."
The young security guard suddenly went behind the counter to the girl. They embraced, then smiling, they went into the back room.
"Come on." Said Matt.
They hurried inside. Matt when straight behind the counter.
"Matt what are you doing?!" whispered Evie, "Do you want them to catch us?"
"Don't worry," said Matt typing on the computer, "Those two won't notice anybody but each other for at least ten minutes!"
"Here it is," said Matt, "Scanlon and Scheckter are in the Grand Suite on the top floor! Let's
They hurried into the elevator.
"Alright," said Evie as the door closed, "spill how did you know the security guard and the clerk on duty were seeing each other and how long they would be in the back room?"
Matt gave a slight guilty smile and rubbed the back of his neck.
"Let's just say this isn't the first time I've snuck into this place." he explained
"I knew I was right." Evie smiled
"Right about what?" asked Matt
"That hanging out with you would never be boring." Grinned Evie
Matt grinned back.
"Thanks!" he said
The doors opened and they hurried down the hall to the door that led to the grand suite. Just as they were coming around the corner, the door opened.
Matt and Evie turned and dove, through a door, into a nearby stairwell. Opening the door a crack, they watched. Two men came out, one that Evie recognized as Scheckter. The other was a slightly older man with slicked back, black hair
"Scheckter, I know," she whispered, "But I'm guessing the other guy is Scanlon."
Matt nodded. The two men passed by on their way to the elevator. After they were gone, Evie and Matt approached the door. Matt listened.
"There's no one else inside," he said, "But we'd better hurry, my guess is they went down to the restaurant for lunch, so we'll only have about 15 or 20 minutes at the most."
Matt picked the lock and they went inside.
"What are we looking for?" asked Evie
"Answers," Replied Matt, "Answers to some of the questions you were asking earlier, the most important question is why is Scanlon so interested in Pine Hollow."
Evie checked the stack of papers on the table and Matt checked the papers on the desk. They were in the middle of snooping when suddenly they heard a key in the look.
Evie and Matt dove into the most convenient hiding place a nearby closet. They cracked the door and watched. Scheckter and Scanlon came walking in with two other middle-aged gentlemen. As soon as their faces became visible Matt heard Evie's breath hitch in her throat.
"Do you know those men?" he whispered
Evie nodded. She leaned down to Matt's ear.
"That's Barry Biggins, Desiree Atherton's father and the other guy is DiAngelo, Veronica DiAngelo Mucahy's father! What are they doing here?!"
