Chapter 7

Everybody gathered around to see what Risa had discovered. She pulled out a flash drive.

"A flash drive?" said Evie

"Yeah," said Risa, "And wait until you see what's on it!"

She walked over to Maxine's laptop.

"May I?" she asked

Maxine nodded and Risa inserted the flash drive into the computer. When it booted up, it displayed several audio files and text documents.

"Listen." Said Risa

When she played the audio files it was discovered that they were recordings of the head thugs' conversations with Scheckter and Scanlon.

"Is that what I think it is?!" asked Matt excitedly

Risa grinned and nodded.

"Apparently Scanlon's hired thugs didn't trust him either," she said, "this flash drive they lost contains evidence and proof of every crooked deal and scheme they ever pulled, including what they were conspiring to do here!"

"Ha, we've got them!" laughed Matt, "We've got them!"

Evie was grinning too

"We've got to get this to the state police!" she said

Matt nodded reached in his pocket. He pulled out his phone and punched up and number in his contacts.

"Risa," he said, "Send all of that to this number and tell them where to find those two."

Risa nodded and set to work.

"Come on Evie," said Matt, "We've got work to do."

"Right," said Evie following him toward the door.

"Wait, Wait," said Rafael, "Where are you two going?"

"To the Willow Creek Suites, where Scanlon and Scheckter are staying." Replied Matt Matter-of-factly.

"Yeah," said Evie, sounding as if it was the most obvious thing in the world, "as soon as those two hear that the State Police knows where they are they'll bolt. We have to make sure they don't get away!"

Before anybody could say yea or nay, Matt and Evie were out the door. Matt grabbed his bow and quiver from the tack room and Evie grabbed hers from the trunk of her mom's car.

Heading into the woods, they called their horses and galloped off to the branch of the trail that led to the hotel.

When they got there, they hunkered down, in the tree line, across from the backdoor and waited. Sure enough, a few minutes later, as Evie and Matt sat next to each other, each calmly putting and explosive arrowhead on one of their arrows, Scanlon and Scheckter came flying out the back door running for their cars.

Matt nodded to Evie and mouthed,

"Ready?"

Evie nodded. They stood up and stepped out of the trees and into the parking lot. As the cars half-swerved around the corner, Matt and Evie fired their arrows right into their grills. The explosions were powerful enough to split the engine blocks in half, blast the hoods of the cars up the in the driver's windshields, and break the front axels.

The cars skidded to a stop in front of Matt and Evie. Scanlon and Scheckter piled out of their cars follow by a cloud of smoke. Scanlon immediately found himself face to face with Matt.

Scanlon howled with rage and started angrily throwing punches. Matt's enhanced reflexes took over and he ducked and dodged every attack. After side stepping a fourth haymaker Matt nailed Scanlon with a right cross that spun him completely around. then Scanlon went cross-eyed and slumped to the pavement unconscious.

Evie had come face to face with Scheckter.

Scheckter grinned smugly and pulled out a large knife.

"Walk away little dancer and I won't hurt you." he threatened arrogantly

The scornful words were barely out of his mouth when Evie suddenly kicked him hard in the groin causing him to double over and drop the knife. Then she instantly followed up with a jump into a high front kick that nailed him in the face. The force of the kick, knocked him backwards and caused him to bounce off the car and land on the pavement hard.

Matt looked down at the unconscious Scheckter them back up at Evie with wide eyes.

Evie grinned.

"I'm a dancer, if there's one thing we can do, it's kick!"

A few minutes later Matt and Evie were standing there watching gleefully as Scanlon and Scheckter were dragged literally kicking and screaming into the back of a squad car.

"This isn't over you brats!" he yelled through the window, "I'll be back and I'll get you!"

"Oh, blow it out your ear!" Evie shot back

The next day at Pine Hollow, Matt, Evie, Risa and the others were in the riding ring waiting for their lesson. As they waited, they started talking.

"My contact at the State police tells me that they've got enough on those guys to put them away for the next 300 years." Said Matt happily

"Well, it couldn't happen to a nicer bunch of guys." Smiled Evie, she turned to her twin sister. "Nice catch finding that stuff, Sis."

Risa grinned

"It was my pleasure." She replied, "and you two make a great team."

Matt and Evie looked at each other and grinned.
