Chapter 1: Not Alone
Alvin and Brittany were sitting together on the island beach with nothing to do. While Simon and Theodore had gone scouting for help, Jeanette and Eleanor remained at the campsite to keep things in order. Alvin scraped a stick through the sand, thinking about his brothers and Dave. He wanted his family to be reunited with their adoptive father so badly, and the Chipettes longed to be home with Miss Miller, but they had been on that island for three days without a sign of their cruise ship.
If only our publicity photos hadn't been so bad, Alvin thought.
Then he looked over at Brittany, who looked pretty glum. Forgetting the problem for a moment, he asked her, "What do you want to do, Brittany?"
"Oh, I don't know," the redhead Chipette replied. "What do you want to do?"
Alvin gave the same reply, and the two just sat there lost in thought. Suddenly, a familiar sound filled the air and Brittany cried, "Alvin, look!"
Alvin looked to the sky and saw it. A plane was making its way over the island, and it looked big enough for a few passengers. At once, Alvin knew that this could be their ticket off the island. He ran to the top of a sand dune and started calling for help, only for Brittany to knock him aside and perform the same action.
"What do you think you're doing?!" snorted Alvin. "By six o'clock, Alvin Seville's gonna be the hero of this story!"
"In your dreams!" Brittany replied in a huff. "When this is over, Brittany Miller will be the one to get us rescued!"
Sadly, it was not to be, for the two friends bickered until Alvin noticed the plane had not seen them at all. As it flew back over the ocean, he moaned, "There goes our rescue plane. Now we're trapped on this island."
"Oh! We'll be stuck here forever!" cried Brittany.
That's when Alvin remembered how Brittany, as the publicist for both their family bands, had made herself and sisters appear to be the star attraction while she had put up a tiny black-and-white photo of him and his brothers. Worse still, that photo was one of their baby pictures and therefore unfit for their performance on the cruise ship. He rounded on her and snapped, "And this time, it's all your fault!"
"MY fault?!" Brittany fumed dramatically. "If you hadn't had delusions of grandeur and tried to hog the limelight and grab all the glory, and…" She faltered for a moment. "And…"
Alvin was prepared for Brittany to try to turn his face into a Picasso or give him a blistering diatribe, but what he saw made his expression soften quickly. It looked like Brittany was lost in a moment of rethinking things, and Alvin could see that she wasn't angry. She was just confused. Then to Alvin's utter shock, Brittany fell on her knees with an expression of sadness and guilt and her eyes began to well.
"Oh, who am I kidding?!" she wailed. "It was my fault! If I hadn't tried to push you and your brothers out of the spotlight and make you guys look unimportant, you wouldn't have gotten so mad at me and we wouldn't be in this mess!" Brittany shed tears and sniffled, "I'm sorry, Alvin."
Seeing that his friend was truly sorry, Alvin sat next to her and gave her a side hug. He assured his friend, "It's okay, Brittany. I'm not mad at you anymore. And I'm sorry I yelled like I did. I shouldn't have been so angry."
Brittany smiled and rested her head on Alvin's shoulder for a moment. She wrapped her arms around him and said, "I forgive you, Alvin. And thank you for forgiving me."
"Of course, Britt," he answered. "At least we're all together." After a few moments of sitting together, Alvin helped Brittany up and said, "Come on. Let's go find our siblings."
…
Simon and Theodore returned to the campsite they had built, where Jeanette and Eleanor were trying to keep cool in the shade of their makeshift cabin. When they arrived, the girls came to greet them and Jeanette asked, "Any luck, Simon?"
"We've searched everywhere within twelve miles," Simon told his friend. "I don't think anyone lives on this island."
Theodore hung his head and said, "I'm scared, Simon. I want Dave so bad."
"Me too, Theodore," replied Simon, taking care to pat his little brother on the shoulder while Eleanor held Theodore's hand. Then the blue-clad chipmunk looked to the beach and saw Alvin and Brittany coming up from it, and they weren't sad or angry at each other. They were smiling now and holding hands as they came up the dunes to find the others. When the two returned to the campsite, Simon said, "Well, this is a pretty sight to see."
"What made you two make up so fast?" inquired Eleanor.
"Let's just say a confession is good for the soul," Brittany said with a grin.
"And with a mutual apology and a little hug, we're happy as we can be right now," added Alvin.
Simon and Theodore smiled at that as did Jeanette and Eleanor. Then after a brief debate, the group decided to continue scouting the island. They began to move inland until they came to the island jungle, tired but still hopeful that they would find help. Theodore was feeling rather scared, so Eleanor held his hand as they traversed the jungle's paths. Then as the Chipmunks and the Chipettes went in a little further, Theodore struck his foot against something and nearly fell, but Eleanor caught him. Alvin and Simon hurried to their brother and Alvin asked, "You all right, Theodore?"
"I'm fine," the youngest Chipmunk replied. "But I think I stubbed my toe on a stick."
Simon looked at the ground and saw the object by Theodore's left foot. He picked it up and saw that it was no mere stick, for it had a sharpened end composed of two prongs. He could also tell it had been painted due to the stripe, and after another quick look, Simon realized what Theodore had found.
"This isn't a stick," he told his brother and the Chipettes. "It's a fishing pole."
"What?" the other five chipmunks gaped.
"Simon, it looks nothing like a fishing pole!" Alvin insisted.
"That's because this kind of fishing pole doesn't use a hook and a line, Alvin," Simon explained. "It catches fish by being thrust into the water."
Eleanor felt her mouth drop and she said, "But, that can only mean…"
The Chipmunks and Chipettes all cried in a mixture of fear and excitement, "We're not alone!"
Then Simon said to the others, "Come on, you guys. We need to look around some more."
"But, Simon! The natives!" squeaked Theodore.
"Take it easy, Theodore. If there are natives on this island, there's always a chance they may not harm us. Besides, we may need help if we're going to be here for a longer time than we think until Dave finds us."
Alvin and the others thought Simon had a point, and so the Chipmunks and the Chipettes swallowed their fear and went on their way through the island jungle.
