Chapter 10: Intensive care unit
They slowly crept their way into the hospital, making sure to watch their steps for any traps that may lay in wait for them. However, a few dozen steps in, they realized there were none. This did not mean there were no dangers within, but they could at least rule traps off the list.
"Well..." Frisk mumbled. "This place sure is creepy..."
"There's a chill in the air... It feels... wrong here... I don't like it one bit." Six murmured as she kicked over some rubble, hoping to turn up something interesting.
"We haven't got a choice... Look over there, I think I see a way forward." Mono stated as he pointed ahead. The group began to march towards the doorway, only to be stopped by what sounded like crumbling and cracking bone. They stopped dead in their tracks, horrified as to what was making those sounds. All was silent for a few seconds before they heard it again. They glanced and saw that it was coming from a darkened corner of the room. It was steady and unstopping. Whatever it was... it wasn't going away. Mono glanced at the girls and gulped before finding a brick and picking it up. Chara and Six both picked up some rubble and joined him with Frisk close behind with a stick. Together, they all slowly inched their way towards the noise, ready to either fight or flight if the need rises. Closer they inched... closer... closer... Until they were right next to the creature. Just as they readied their attack, the lights flickered on and cast a brilliant light on the... creature... that wasn't even a creature at all.
"Can't believe this still works." Mike said as he repeatedly pulled the lever to a snack machine, causing snacks to pop out one-by-one. "What a time to be alive." The others groaned and chastised him for scaring them so bad. He laughed a bit and apologized, promising not to do it again... for at least a few hours. Chara punched his shoulder playfully and began dragging him towards the doorway along with the others. "What do you think we're gonna see in here?" Mike asked.
"Nothing good... Nothing good at all." Mono replied. "Keep your eyes peeled and stay alert. You never know what could-" As he spoke, he was suddenly grabbed violently by the collar of his coat and pulled back. He landed hard on his butt and groaned. "What was that for?" Six stared down at Mono for a moment before pointing towards the massive drop that welcomed them and nearly claimed Mono's life. "Oh... Oh no..." He mumbled. "Uh... Thank you." She nodded an glanced around for a moment. She spotted about a dozen beds dangling from the ceiling and decided they'd make great platforming. All together, the kids scaled the dangling bed tower mostly without a hitch until they reached the top and lept to safety. Once they did, they noticed the were in some sort of... waiting room? Well, from what they could see at least. It was quite dark as very little power seemed to be directed to this room, they figured it must not be that important to keep power flowing to it. However, this also must have meant that there was someone in this building that needed power in the first place... this realization worried them, but did not give them pause. After a few minutes of exploring, they discovered several fuse boxes were either missing fuses, or had fuses that were blown out.
"A simple fix... if only we could find replacements... One of these must open those big doors over there." Frisk said as she pulled the busted fuses out of the hox and threw them away. "At the very least it should shine some more light in this place."
"Okay, let's all look around, There's bound to be at least one spare around here." The others nodded at Chara and went to work tearing the room apart for a spare fuse. They turned over boxes, searched in filing cabinets, and dared to venture a few feet into the unknown darkness just beside them. Eventually, one of them found a spare and they quickly plugged it into the box. A few sparks flew as power surged through, but it thankfully didn't blow and lo-and-behold: there was light in the room that not only illuminated this one, but the nearby rooms as well, vastly expanding their exploring range. However... this came with a very grim cost. The gift of light was both a blessing and a curse, because not only did it allow them to see the room clearly, it also allowed them to see the mangled bodies of the... 'patients' that came here. Almost none of these creatures had a head, and the ones that did had crude ones attached to their shoulders. Legs and arms and various other limbs detached and replaced with random nonsense and disgusting prosthetics. In fact, the only thing these beings had left of them that was genuinely theirs was their torso's, which were in various stages of rot and/or taxidermy. The group took one long look at these amalgamations and threw up. Someone in this hospital did this to them...and they were almost certain whatever it was is still lurking within these darkened halls.
