Chapter 17: Pay-per-view
The group made their way deeper into the heart of the city and for once, they didn't see much of anything hostile. Mostly piles of clothes and a few broken TV's
"This place is giving me the creeps... The buildings are following us... the streets feel like they're breathing... this city is so dead... but it feels so alive..." Frisk said nervously.
"Maybe there's a giant creature living under the city." Six joked devilishly. Frisk gasped and frowned at Six.
"Don't say that!"
"Settle down you two. We came too far to freak out now." Mono said. The girls huffed a bit but calmed down, if only a little bit. "That's better. Now... see that tower over yander?" Mono said as he pointed. The others looked into the direction of the massive structure in the distance. Every now and then a light would blink. The longer they looked at it, the more their head hurt so they looked away soon after. "I feel like our answers will be there."
"How are you so sure?" Mike asked. Mono shrugged.
"I'm not But I know an important building when I see one."
"That sounds awfully convenient..."
"I don't make the rules." They all decided to drop the subject and just keep pushing forward. Besides, bickering would only slow them down and increase their risk of getting hurt. They decided to take a shortcut through a house, which didn't seem like a good idea in hindsight due to the many nooses' and clothes and broken televisions.
"I'm starting to notice a pattern I don't really like..." Chara mumbled.
"Meaning?" Mike asked.
"The clothes... the TV's... they're linked in some way... I just don't know what..." The looming darkness started to surround them as they pushed onward. They mounted old couches and perched on fallen beams of wood to hop to the next until they came to the next room. This house was decayed in many ways, most of all was the literal decay of the wood and furniture from being exposed to the elements due to the large holes all over the place. The whole building was a death trap where one wrong move spelled your end, but they eventually found some stable ground. However, all the while they were working their way through the house, they worked in silence, nothing but each others grunting and breathing to break the silence. That is... until they heard distant static.
"Please tell me you all hear that too..." Frisk mumbled. Six nodded at her.
"You haven't gone crazy yet..." She replied. They group exchanged uneasy glances as they slowly crept closer towards the white noise.
"Do you think-" Mono's words were quickly interupted once a creature burst out of a nearby door, knocking them all on their butts and stunning them. They focused on the thing and screamed once they noticed it was a person. Well... the remains of a person. They looked normal enough... until they saw its face, or lack of one. It was as if their heads were made of dough and someone took a mixer to it. However, the 'man' was less interested in them and more interested in the static, which turned out to be a TV. He bashed his head directly into the TV, causing his whole body to receive many volts of electricity, effectively killing him. But more so, the momentum of his charge caused him to fall out of the window and onto the streets below.
"...that sucked." Mike mumbled. The group slowly peaked down to where the man feel and beheld a horrific sight: A whole group of viewers had gathered at their fallen brother's corpse. But they seemed more interested in the death of the TV. Chara let out a gasp, which caused all of them to quickly look up at them and let out a demonic growl sound before rushing into the house to get them.
"It's okay. They shouldn't be able to make it past all the jumps and obstacles." This gave them a bit of relief... until they saw the viewers making easy work of said obstacles. "Son of a b-" Six shouted for everyone to run, and so they did. The chase was on, the kids had no choice but to jump from this building to the other, using a partially destroyed cloth to break their fall. They quickly scrambled into the house and ran as fast as they could away from the viewers, who were hot on their tails. They weren't too fast and were fairly clumsy, but they were persistent and didn't seem to grow tired.
"My legs are burning! I can't keep this up much longer!" Six begged as she began to stumble over her own feet. Frisk helped her keep her footing as they rushed through the numerous houses and streets.
"What do we do?! There's nowhere we can go that they won't follow!" Mono exclaimed as he looked back at the horde of viewers behind him.
"Over here!" Mike exclaimed. He was busy trying to pry open a manhole. "Help me!" Mono rushed over to Mike and helped him. Together, they opened up the rusty plate just enough for everyone to squeeze through. Just as the last person slipped inside, Mike and Mono jumped inside and allowed the manhole cover to slam shut just as the viewers reached them. They got so close that one of them even managed to get its fingers caught in the hole and cut clean off. They all landed in shallow water, which broke their fall.
"Gross..." Sox complained.
"At least we're alive..." Mono replied as he slowly stood up and shook off as much water as he could.
"You think we're safe down here?" Chara asked. Mike slowly looked around the sewer they had found themselves in. He furrowed his brow and wiped the sweat off. "We're never safe... Not in this city... But I don't think we should run into any if them down here..." He paused for a moment as he listened for anything he could. He could only make out the sound of slow moving water and the occasional drip of water. "I just wonder what lies in wait for us here..." These words filled the others with dread as they peered out into the dark depths before them.
