Raph growled angrily. "If I see those two boneheads again, they're going to spend the next few months in a full-body cast."
"As much I would enjoy assisting you, as the older brother, I have to say that I can't allow you to do this." Donnie sighed tiredly, rubbing his face. Next to him, on top of a comfortable hospital bed, was a being the Hamato family thought was nothing more than a ghost story.
Leonardo…the turtle they had lost what felt like a lifetime ago, was here now, changed beyond what anyone could believe.
If they didn't have the files that they managed to steal from the Earth Protective Force, then they wouldn't even know about their long-lost brother.
Donnie kept his hands moving, hoping that the movement would help calm his mind and place it on one track. But it kept going around like a beehive hopped up on sugar. There was just so much to think about at the moment that the Chuuin of the Hamato Clan had to put his tools down, step back and take a breath. Raph, from where he was situated on the other side of the table watching the steady breathing of their unconscious brother, glanced up. His eyes shown worriedly.
"Dee? You alright?"
Donnie nodded silently. His reddish-brown eyes watched his brother's (Gods that was a strange thing to think about) sleeping form. If it wasn't for the cracked shell and the bleeding shoulder, anyone might've been tricked into thinking that the mutant was just sleeping peacefully.
"How could we have let this happen?"
Raph's eyes became sad. "We didn't know that these people would've done this, Dee."
"I'm not talking about the stupid bounty hunter. I'm talking about not knowing about Leo for six years. And he's supposedly been on the streets for twelve!"
"Dee. You can't blame yourself. Leo managed to survive for twelve years on the streets by himself. It's not like he's helpless."
Before Donnie could open his mouth to respond, the door to his private lab swished open and Mikey entered. His curious expression turned into one of pure childhood excitement when he noticed the being on the table.
"Ohmygoooooosh! You actually found him!"
"Mikey!" Donnie hissed. "Keep it down!"
"Sorry! But I'm so happy that we finally found him!" Mikey hopped up and down on his feet, looking like a kid barely holding back the urge to rip open their Christmas present.
"Mikey, listen. This is serious. There's no telling how his years alone affected his development. And judging by the nicks on his shell and scars on his body, he's been through quite a lot."
Both of his brothers sobered up. Mikey looked like he was about to cry. Raph looked like he wanting to punch something hard enough to send his fist through the person's face.
Thankfully, he reigned in his anger enough to ask, "What do you need us to do?"
Donnie gave both of his brothers, the only two people that he could trust, a small smile. "Could you double check the Sanctuary and make sure that everything's working? Security cameras and locks, and such?"
Mikey perked up immediately. "Sure thing bro! Don't worry, I'll make sure the place is the snazziest Leo has ever seen!"
He zipped out the door so fast, Donnie thought he could see smoke trails. Raph rolled his eyes as he followed his younger brother, promising to make sure he didn't do anything too crazy to the carefully restructured place that would act as their new family member's safe haven. When he was alone, Donnie allowed a sigh of exhaustion to seep out.
Six years of stressing, of wondering about whether or not Leo was still alive, worrying about his state of being or health.
Donnie nearly cried as he took in his brother's painfully underweight body. He took a moment to pause his work, taking Leo's base temperature to add to his notes for his future care. Behind Leo's eyelids, Donnie could see his brother's eyes flickering.
"Oh Leonardo." Donnie breathed softly. "We found you at last. You really do exist."
Distantly, Donnie wondered what the mutant turtle was dreaming about.
"I'm so sorry, we never meant for you to get hurt. But I promise you, everything's going to be okay from now on." His eyes went to the injury on his shell, then to the scars and gouges that littered his entire body. "You're safe now and nobody will ever hurt you again, brother. Not if we have anything to say about it."
Without thinking, Donatello placed his hand on Leo's shell, as though the mutant turtle could feel the comforting touch. The oldest Hamato shook his head, reigning in his emotions for the time being as he went back to working diligently for his brother's sake.
