Later that day, Tavington woke up alone in a private room of medical tent. He dreamed of Charlotte, he was sure of it. He wanted to see her as soon as he could. He tried to stand up, but sat down on the cot, feeling slightly dizzy. He brought his hand to his side where he felt great pain. Doctor Mackenzie entered the room.
"I see you feel better Colonel. I came to check you wound and change you bandage."
"I want to see my wife, I need to go," Tavington said as he tried to stand up again.
"No, you will sit down the time I assess you wound," the doctor said as he put his hand on his shoulder. The Colonel lifted his shirt, granting the doctor access to his wound. "I see Lady Charlotte really know how to sew. Your wound will heal in no time, if you rest."
"What do you mean, she knows how to sew?"
"She is the one who dug the bullet out and sew you after. Don't you remember?"
"I thought that was a dream."
The doctor was changing the bandages around the Colonel's chest when General Cornwallis entered the tent.
"You will be missed tomorrow Colonel."
"Missed my Lord?"
"Your wound."
"It's nothing," Tavington said as he stood up.
"I stand on the eve of the greatest victory of my career. Don't fail me."
"My efforts in no small measure have brought you here."
"I grant you that small measure, in spite of you failure to deliver The Ghost to me"
"Thus far."
"I will not tolerate a premature charge born of your eagerness for glory. Wait for my order. Or you may abandon any hope of Ohio. "
…
Charlotte entered the room after Mackenzie told him her husband was awake. She saw him sitting down, looking at the ground. His hair was down, his shirt was shred. He looked around and his eyes locked on her. He stood up and she hurried into his arms. He gasped as she held onto him.
"I was so scared when I saw you enter the medical tent earlier, my love," Charlotte said as tears rushed to her eyes.
"I did not know I married a doctor. You really have every talent."
He sighed of relieve. He was still alive and felt he was going to heal in no time. He caressed her back, not wanting to let her go.
"What do you know about Martin's son? Did you meet him when you were captive?" Tavington asked.
"Gabriel? Well, I don't know what to say. In the last days of my stay, he got married to a woman. Her parents and she were the one driving the cart to Pembroke the day you found me."
Tavington understood. Gabriel's vengeance was more personal since the dragoons killed the whole town of Pembroke, killed his wife.
"When are we going back to the Fort? You will need to rest if you want to heal."
"I will not be going. The battle of Cowpens is tomorrow, I will be sleeping here."
"I am not leaving your side then."
He wanted to protest, but his energy was low. He put his arm around her shoulder and rested on her while they walked to his tent. He sat down on the chair.
"I need to write me report."
"No, you need to rest now. You should lie down."
"And now you are defying me? The colonies have such an effect on you," he said as he sat her in his lap, wincing slightly at the shot of pain he felt in his side.
"I was so scared when I saw you earlier. I could not live without you. You are my whole life," she said, resting her forehead against his.
"The only thing I could think of after I was hit was you. And our child. Our son," he said as he put a hand on her belly.
"Our son. Why would you think it is a boy? Maybe it is a girl!"
She put her hand over his, fighting back her tears. This baby was precious. If anything would happen to her husband, this child would be all she had left. As if he could read her mind, he kissed her deeply, hoping this would change her mind. She moved on his lap and he whined.
"Now, William Edward Tavington, you will lie down and rest."
"Yes, General Lily."
..
Hours later, dinner was served directly in their tent. She ate alone, William was still sleeping and she could not bear to wake him up. Night had fallen, and her eyelids were heavy. She took a wool blanket and covered his body. She moved his right arm and she cuddled next to him on the narrow cot, resting her head on his shoulder. She was careful not to touch his wound as she replaced the blanket, she was shivering. William woke up and tightened his grip around her body.
"How much does it hurt, my love?" she enquired.
"Not so bad. With you by my side, I don't need anything more."
He cupped her chin with his hand and kissed her. She felt his hand on her back, holding her close to him. As his tongue found hers, she lifted herself up on her elbow.
"Tomorrow is an important day, a decisive battle. I am glad to have you by my side tonight."
"Please, don't talk like that. You will win this battle, the same as you won every other battle before. Then you will come back to me. This is the only order you have to follow tomorrow."
His nose brushed hers, before he kissed her once again.
"I want you, Lily," he whispered while kissing her neck.
"You need to rest, my love," she said, sighing under his kisses.
"I thought you were supposed to take care of me. You know what would be good for me."
She smiled as she knew exactly what he meant. She kissed him deeply and slid her hand down his stomach, caressing his manhood through his breech. She could feel him shiver under her touch. She undid the buttons and opened his pants, freeing his growing erection. Still looking at him, she held him tight in her small hand and started her up and down motion. His eyes closed as he sighed. After the emotions of the day, this was just what he needed to relax.
She lifted her skirts and straddled him. His weak look was not habitual and she could not help but felt pity. He was always so strong; she thought he was truly invincible. But to see him wounded made her feel like she could lose him every time he was out on the field. They should enjoy every moment together to the fullest. She regretted the doubts she had toward him the last few weeks.
She bent down to hold his erection before she lowered herself over him. He groaned loudly.
"Are you okay? Did I hurt you?" Charlotte asked, worried about his wound.
"No, you feel so good, don't stop…"
With his incentives, she started to move her hips slowly up and down. His hands wandered on her legs underneath her skirt, then settled on her buttocks. She leaned and rested her hand on his shoulders as she picked up speed with her thrusts. She started to moan as she felt the pleasure built up in her core. Quickly, his hand moved to her mouth, to muffle the sound she made. After all, they were still in a tent, many people could heard them. This effort of a silent love making was vain as she moaned even more with his hand grapping her. Her lips parted open and his fingers slipped in her mouth. She welcomed them with her tongue as she kept her thrusts. He tried to move his hips to match her motion, but the pain he felt was sharp. Instead, his fingers moved to her sensitive spot under her skirts. She slowed down as her head felt back and she closed her eyes; she thought she could melt under his touches. His groans made her come back to the moment and she picked up more speed, rolling her hips. She could feel his manhood filling her completely before leaving her almost empty for a moment, then filling her again. She started to feel her muscles contract around him; she was close to her release. He looked at her and could not believe how wanton she looked with her eyes closed, bouncing up and down his length. She was his, he was the only man who would get to see her like this, and his name was the only one she would moan. His fingers circled her sensitive bud and she yelled as she came undone. He could not do otherwise than do exactly the same, as he spilled inside her.
She remained motionless, still straddling him, recovering from her explosive orgasm when she heard people talk just on the other side of the fabric of the tent. Oh god, men were listening to them, she thought. Her cheeks became hot and she felt embarrassed. She lifted herself and cuddled her husband on the small cot. She looked at his bandages before covering their bodies with the blanket. The bandages were still clean, which was a good sign. She rested her head on his shoulder and both of them felt quickly asleep.
