Chapter 3 - The Agent
"Fae,"
"Mmm…?"
"Fae, baby, wake up!"
"Huh?"
Fae rubbed her eyes to see Quinn's figure standing at the doorway. Picking up her glasses from the bedside table, Fae read the clock. 7:00 am.
"Shit," Fae put on her glasses to look at Quinn, this time in focus. God, she looked beautiful, even this early in the morning.
"Mommy, I'm hungry!" Hazel's voice boomed from the kitchen.
"In a minute, Hazelnut" Quinn shouted back. She closed the door behind her and walked over to where Fae laid, sitting on the edge of the bed.
"Good morning," Quinn leaned in to give Fae a quick kiss.
"Well, good morning. Thank you for waking me up."
"I assumed you had work to go to, but I wasn't sure what time so I figure I'd wake you up before I dropped Hazel off at school."
"No, no this is perfect. Thank you." Fae leaned in to kiss Quinn again, this time a little longer. "Thank you for letting me sleepover."
"Anytime. I mean it…" Quinn bit her lip, failing to meet her lover's eyes.
"Well, let me put some clothes on so you go and make Hazel breakfast. I think she's hungry"
Quinn chuckled softly before getting up off the bed. "Alright. You like breakfast sandwiches?"
"Do I!"
/
Fae came to work giddy and uncontrollably happy.
"Harmony! Looking great sweetie! Oh hey, Gunn! Looking very smart, oh and Stevie, how's Addison coming along? Great! Oh, can't wait to see what the beast is going to throw our way this time!"
"You look oddly… chipper?" Marley laughed as Fae passed her through the hallway.
"Marley!" Just the person Fae was looking for. "Can you come to my office for a second?"
"Okay just for a little bit, Fred has me running tests on the tentacle we sliced off the other day and I don't want to get in trouble."
"Super quick, I promise."
/
"You did WHAT?" Marley's mouth gaped open. "This is your definition of taking it slow!?"
"Well everything was fine, she cooked me breakfast and everything!" Fae was sitting in her office chair, hands thrown above her head.
"Does she even know what you do for work?"
"I told her I worked in management."
"Did you say where?"
"I don't think I've told anyone that and I'd like to keep it that way."
"Fair enough…" Marley looked away. "Do you know what you're doing with this girl?"
Fae smirked. "I know what she's doing to me-"
"Fae!"
"Okay, okay, this is kind of what slow is for me," Fae relaxed her facial expression. "Usually after one night at the bar it ends there, but this time is different. She really felt like a girlfriend, she cooked me breakfast, she woke me up for work. It's the little things that make the big picture."
Marley nodded her head at her senior. "Okay, I'm sorry I've been so harsh on you, it's just-" Marley sighed. "You're really awesome Fae, I think you deserve someone just as awesome and not all these stupid girls you keep getting around with."
"I know"
"Which is why I really don't want you to screw things up with Quinn! She seems really special."
"Thanks, Marley, maybe we can all meet up sometime? You can bring your roommate if you like."
"Kitty?" Marley thought for a moment. "I think she'd be down."
/
Fae got home exhausted. After a mountain of paperwork, managing a mass weapon purchase, watching Marley bustle around the lab, it was time for a drink.
Fae poured herself a glass of spiced rum with an ice cube, setting it down on the living room coffee table.
Bzzt Bzzt
Huh, an international number.
"Y'ello," Fae picked up the phone and held it on her shoulder, reaching for the drink on the table.
"Fae, it's Marie."
Marie was an agent from the Netherlands branch of Wolfram and Hart. She was a master assassin, specializing in demons. She was well versed in the different kinds of demons and how to kill them.
Fae swallowed a sip of her drink "Holy shit, Marie, how are you?"
"Drinking again?"
"Of course, you?"
"You know me-"
"Isn't it a little late?"
"I figured you'd be off work." Marie sounded proud over the phone.
"Lemme guess, the Beast." Fae set her drink down, furrowing her brows.
"You know it." Marie stopped herself, this time her tone becoming more serious. "Remember back at training camp?"
"Where we first met."
"And the accident?"
"No-" Fae's mind flashed back to her training in the desert.
/
She and Marie had been training in the southwestern United States for weeks now. They had met at the camp bar as the two of them were in very different skill classes of training.
"Marie, come here, I'll buy this time" Fae gestured for Marie to sit with her at the bar.
"Alright fine, but we gotta dance after this"
"Okay, you're on." Fae handed Marie a drink and the two of them clinked their glasses together, throwing back their drinks.
/
Fae threw some money in the bar's jukebox, and she and Marie hit the floor dancing.
So go on, go on
Come on, leave me breathless
Tempt me, tease me
Until I can't deny this
Loving feeling
Make me long for your kiss-
A crash bellowed through the building, with sirens wailing immediately after.
"We're under attack!"
"What the fuck is going on!?" Fae screamed at Marie, who was fixated immediately on the sound.
"Go, find shelter!" Marie yelled back at Fae. "I'll deal with this one."
Fae paused for a split second before running towards the exit. She was scared to leave Marie behind, but she was also confident in her abilities.
"Go!"
/
"I remember." Fae bit her lip.
"That thing that attacked us, I never told you what it was, and really it's because we didn't know."
Fae let out a long, drawn-out sigh. "It had something to do with the Beast, right?"
"Look at you, so smart." Marie's laugh was bitter. "That was just the beginning of it. Now we're knee-deep in his shit. I saw he's attacked LA, and now they've asked me to go over there to protect New York and get data on the demon."
"Yeah, we got some parts of this weird-ass entity at the lab."
"Yes, that. I want to take a better look at it, photos only do so much justice." Marie paused.
"...Well, when do you get here? You need a place to stay?" Fae reluctantly offered.
"I'd appreciate it. Seriously. I will arrive in about a week or so. They won't tell me when, but I assume it will be around then."
"Alright, you let me know. I'll prepare for it."
"See you Fae."
Click
Fae set the phone down and realized Ethan was behind her.
"Holy shit, Ethan, how long have you been standing there."
"Only for about a minute." Ethan was quieter than usual. "Don't worry I didn't hear much, only about a friend coming over?"
"Yeah, a friend from the Netherlands. Coming over for a business trip." Fae curled her lips together, scrambling to change the subject. "How was your rehearsal?"
"Really good," Ethan's eyes fluttered, and proceeded to turn around to their room.
"Erm, okay?" Fae shrugged and threw on a DVD of the L word.
/
Aja came home and told Fae about the whole Ethan kissing mystery man. Those musical theatre kids are whores. Trust Fae, she would know.
"Also,"
"Yeah?"
"Me and Santana have a date on Saturday."
"Oh my god no way," Fae almost spat out her drink. "So what are you guys, you official now?"
"Well, you could say that" Aja flashed a cheeky smile.
"No fucking way, Aja Cenae!" Fae pushed Aja. She was playful but she couldn't help but feel jealous.
The second Aja turned around Fae picked up her phone. God, how badly she wanted to be official with Quinn. Aja and Santana were doing it, so why couldn't she?
"Hey Quinn, I am so grateful for this morning, you seriously don't know how much I appreciate you." Fae smiled down at her phone, remembering her morning. "I'd like to go on an official date with you. Just me and you, no nightclubs, just us, talking."
Fae sent the message, holding her phone to her chest.
Fae turned around to see Ethan continuing their Tumblr brigade and around the other way to see the light shining through Aja's bedroom door. If only her roommates knew what was really going on.
Bzzt Bzzt
Fae leaped for her phone, holding it close to her face.
"I would love that."
