I do not own Twilight or the Vampire Diaries

Jacob watched with a frown as Bella almost launched off her feet. She flew back into the quarterback's chest and the laugh the blonde let out annoyed him. The way he held Bella with one hand on her shoulder and the other wrapped around her waist. The guy towered over her with his height, and Bella was already a bit of a short girl at least to Jacob. The shifter watched as Matt helped right her up and then reached for the crossbow.

"Almost had it," he said, clapping her shoulder.

Bella huffed and rolled her shoulders. "Is it supposed to be that heavy?"

"Well it is an older model," he said to her and stared down at the crossbow. Jasper had it in storage and had gone to get it along with some old things. Apparently, he and Bonnie had gotten into a fight after he spoke a little too proudly about being in the confederate army. The whole house had heard it which wasn't hard considering it consisted of seven vampires, but he and Mike had been in the middle of a game of Madden when they heard Bonnie's voice rising.

Tessa had been on her way out to do her own thing. She had made a quip about how things between them were already rocky because Jasper was treating her with kid gloves. Matt couldn't help but agree. In order for the two of them to work on their relationship and actually build something other than short and rather tense conversations, they were going to have to come to a compromise. It wouldn't be easy though. Bonnie was as stubborn as a mule and Jasper tended to clam up.

But if the box labeled memorabilia said anything, it was possible they were going to be headed towards a good start.

"She's okay you know," Bella offered, bringing him out of his thoughts. Matt looked down at her and his face must have given away his unspoken question. The brunette rolled her eyes at him and then poked his arm. "I'm talking about Bonnie, you dweeb."

"How do you know I was talking about her?"

"You get this look when you do," she told him. "You get kind of spacy and you look like you're wondering if anything is wrong."

"You looking at my face, Swan?"

"You're teaching me how to use a crossbow. Donovan."

Her lips were pulled back into a smile, but he loved how bright her eyes had gotten. Out the corner of his eye, Matt could see how Jacob was huffing. It was almost odd how he reminded him of Jeremy with the way he was staring at him. But he honestly didn't care, not when Bella was smiling like that. He liked her smile and he had been serious when he said she should smile more.

It brought the beauty she didn't out to the surface. He wasn't blind, Bella was a beautiful girl. A little withdrawn sure but that was just a part of her personality. Quiet unless it was something she was passionate about.

Matt coughed, choosing to ignore how his heart skipped a beat and held the crossbow up towards Jacob. "What do you say, kid? You want to give it a shot?"

"No thanks," he grumbled.

Bella looked back at her best friend with a sigh. They had been having a fun time on the Rez but the moment they had gotten back to the treaty border, Matt had extended an invitation for him to join them. They stuck to the path close to the border and while the two humans have been having fun making jokes and Bella even had a full belly laugh or two, Jacob had been huffing.

He was acting like her being friends with someone was a bad thing. She was about to say something about it when Matt's cell phone went off. He glanced down at it and then turned to Bella looking apologetic.

"I'm gonna take this, it's our friend Caroline. Gimme a sec, but go ahead and talk to him," he told her and patted her shoulder again before walking a few feet off.

He turned back to see Bella walk up to Jacob before he answered the phone. "You know I didn't think you were gonna remember I existed."

He knew it was a low blow, but it was oddly worth it when he heard Caroline wince. "Okay first of all, ouch. What did I do to you?"

It wasn't what she did to him, but more of how she showed her friendships. He knew Tyler was back and he wouldn't be surprised if she was calling to tell him what he was already aware of.

"Not important Care, what are you calling for?"

She was quiet for a moment, and he knew it was involving Bonnie. "I... well...there isn't really any way to say this but Bonnie is dead. She's been dead for the last month or so," she choked out as if she was trying to keep her tears at bay. Matt almost felt a little guilty know that Bonnie was alive but everyone else seemed to think she was dead.

"And you're just now telling me this?" he hissed. He wished he could say he was faking being angry. But honestly, he wasn't because all this was showing him was that his friends were selfish. He had expected this from Elena and even Damon. But Caroline? Caroline loved Bonnie more than life, so for her to just seemingly forget her best friend was dead...

"I was grieving Matt," she defended. "Besides I wasn't sure if you were going to answer anyway. You did kind of just up and left us for Rebekah Mikaelson."

He heard how she said his ex-girlfriend's name like it was a curse. He should have tried defending her but really, he wasn't in the mood. How could he be when he was still angry about Bonnie?

"Gimme the damn phone, blondie!" he heard Damon snap and the sounds of the phone being wrestled out of Caroline's hands before the older vampire spoke. "Listen up Quarterback, I need you to use whatever means necessary to get Barbie Klaus to find a way to bring back witchy. Silas is still walking the Earth and we haven't heard anything from my brother so we're not sure if he's dead either or if Silas is keeping him somewhere. But we do need witchy, so I don't care if you have to use your dick but at least prove that you're good for something other than being a goddamn burden."

Matt flinched, and it was an old habit. Damon always knew how to make him feel like crap.

"Oh and make sure to pick up your phone. We can't have witchy giving out aneurysms because you decided to go off and get killed in pursuit of vampire pussy."

The phone call ended, and Matt could only stare at the screen, his happy mood souring instantly. He wasn't sure what to do. All he really wanted to do was let off some steam and possibly in Damon's chest. His eyes landed on the arrow that he had been getting ready to load as he had spoken with Bella. Something in the back of his mind told him to aim for the trees and he followed that instinct.

He loaded the arrow, moving almost as if it was natural and then he raised it to the tree line. His eyes were narrowed, and he could barely hear Bella calling his name as he pulled the trigger.

The arrow flew through the air and the three watched as something fell to the ground. Jacob seemed to know what it was because he had shifted and was upon it quickly. Bella had found her way into Matt's arms, being shielded from the sight of her best friend tearing a vampire apart.

There was a cracking sound like shattered glass and when it was over. The screams died down and Bella found herself looking at the torn remains of what looked like a teenager. But she didn't think about that, she turned her gaze back to Matt. The blue of his eyes was dark, and his face was wracked with silent rage. She was so focused on that, she hardly registered that his right hand was shaking.

They weren't even sure if who had come to the treaty line first, Sam and Paul or Carlisle and Edward.

"I'm sorry but you said Matt was the one who took him down?" Emmett was staring at the two in shock before his eyes slid over to Matt who was currently standing off with Bonnie and Mike, explaining what has happened. The burly vampire let out a low whistle. He was impressed, to say the least. Matt was a fun guy and apparently, he could bring down a newborn pretty quickly. The question of how he even knew the newborn was there was still up the air though.

"Wait, aren't they friends?" Jacob asked, watching as Bonnie basically tried to tear Matt's jacket and shirt off. The blonde was faster than she was, and they all watched as Matt threw his clothes on the ground and Bonnie's eyes widened. Jacob let his eyes cut to Bella and watched as she turned away, almost flustered at the sight of Matt shirtless.

Rosalie and Alice titled their heads, impressed at Matt's physique.

"She's checking for something," Edward told the shifter.

Over with Bonnie, the two blondes were in the middle of their own conversation while Bonnie was talking on her phone to Tessa.

"So do you just bulk up on protein?" Mike asked him, tilting his head to the side. He wasn't even that fit and he did workouts every morning.

"My best friend is a hybrid, dude. He had me doing his entire regiment but for my body," Matt answered him, remembering all those five am workouts that Tyler had him doing once he had started feeling antsy as a hybrid. He had almost collapsed after the first week, but Tyler had come to him that Monday with a modified workout for him.

Mike nodded. "Nice, so there's more to you than a kind heart and some killer baby blues."

Matt snorted, "I'm flattered dude, but I'm straight."

"I wasn't flirting with you Donovan," Mike assured him and then rolled his eyes when he caught Emmett crackling into his hand. He turned towards Bonnie who had just hung up the phone.

"What did Tessa say?"

Bonnie answered while looking at Matt. "You're a hunter alright," she said looking at the markings on his hand and crawling up his arm. The story it told was different from the one of the Five though. There was a design of what looked like a phoenix rebirth cycle starting from its death, but the embers were emerald green and soft blues.

"Different design though," Matt murmured as he flexed his arm and moved it around to examine it more. It seemed to shimmer a bit in the light. It honestly looked like a really cool tattoo.

"Tessa said she would explain when she got home," Bonnie assured him.

The blonde nodded and glanced back towards Bella. He was a bit more worried about her than remembering why he had the mark in the first place. Damon left a sour taste in his mouth and so far, Bonnie hadn't wanted to talk about him.

"She's fine," Mike assured him, resting his hand on the other blonde's shoulder. "A little shaken up because she's never seen a vampire get torn up, but she's okay."

Bonnie smiled at the two but then a frown crossed her lips. "This whole thing is getting messy," she mused and then turned towards the Cullens. "Carlisle, I think we need to call a truce for now."

"We have," Sam snipped.

"I meant allowing the pack to come to Forks and the Cullens vis versa," Bonnie explained to him. It would be a smarter idea and she really wanted to make sure Bella was okay.

"Like hell we are!" Paul growled, his disgust for the Cullens showing loud and clear. She understood where he was coming from, but this wasn't an issue that was going to be discussed for too long. She was about to say something about it when she suddenly groaned, feeling like water was in her lungs.

Her eyes widened and let out a strangled choke and dropped to her knees. All around her she heard her name being called. A cold touch was around her, Jasper's soft drawl in her ear as she tried to focus on his voice. Something was wrong…

Her eyes rolled to the back of her head and without a word, Bonnie slumped forward.
