It was seemingly another day at Crosslands High School. Except for one thing. "Scott isn't here again?", Jacqueline, the closest thing the senior class had to a bimbo, asked. "I know he's a flake, but he'd never miss three days in a row."
No-one payed her any regard. Well, almost no-one. "When Jacqueline actually has a point,y ou know something's up.", Artie whispered to Roland. "Come to think of it, quite a few people have vanished lately. Like Sanpei from the local fruit parlour."
"I'd think they were just taking early vacation time.", Roland whispered back.
"That many people?", Artie whispered back. "Besides, Raquel's also not here and she's supposed to be taking us on vacation with her, remember?"
As he said this, Raquel burst into the room, clearly out of breath. Mrs. Collins didn't look amused. "Raquel, if you want to be independent enough to walk to school on your own, you need to actually show up on time."
"I'm sorry.", Raquel wheezed. "There's just so many dogs out there. It's chaos."
Everyone immediately became concerned at this. "Is there something I'm missing here?", Ricky whispered to Drew.
"Yes, I'd also like to know what the issue is.", Chloe added.
"Raquel suffers from Cynophobia.", Drew explained. "The fear of dogs. This mass appearance by them isn't going to be pretty for her."
"What?", Malgramon asked. "Are you sure you overheard correctly?"
"I'm sure of it.", came Reptillia's answer. "The Pink Ranger was definitely said to have a fear of dogs. It's fortunate for us that those flea ridden mongrels are swarming."
"Not entirely by luck.", Malchemist announced. "This is the work of my Boma Warrior, Shifter."
The whole room was shocked to hear this. "So this swarm of canines is your work?", Bugroth asked.
"Not exactly.", Hellivore said in response, as he stepped forward with a humanoid canine, with a large halo on its back, dog collars for cuffs, a second mouth on its chest, shoulder armour made of bone and spikes on its knees. "I took note of Switcher's powers and suggested a collaboration with Malchemist in order to put them into effect."
"The time has come for the dogs to rrrise up against their human masterrrrrs.", Switcher snarled. "My powerrr allows me to change a human into a dog and the rrreverrrse. My brrrethrren will be grrateful enough at theirrr newfound salience that they will gladly align with me."
"And with the new information Reptillia obtained, I have a new plan.", Hellivore added. "If we turn all but the Pink Ranger into dogs, then she will be too terrified to fight back against us. Victory will be assured before next week."
"You want us to be done for then?", Malchemist asked. "Why?"
Hellivore thought about how he had overheard the Rangers planning to leave the town temporarily next week, thus robbing them of a chance to get their powers to free Malgramon during that time. "I have my reasons.", was all he said before walking off.
Back in the town, Ricky, Drew, Artie and Roland all went up to Raquel. "So, you have Cynophobia.", Ricky said to start a conversation.
This caused Raquel to get defensive. "What? N-no, I don't have a fear of dogs. What're you talking about?"
"Funny, because he never explained what Cynophobia was.", Artie pointed out. "And you know that we know you suffer from it."
Raquel sighed. "Fine, you've got me. But is it really so bad to have a fear of something?"
"No, it's perfectly normal.", Drew assured her. "I'm scared of my Aunt Gladys's broom closet." Everyone stopped and stared at him. "If you were there, you'd understand."
"That's exactly what my fear boils down to.", Raquel explained. "When I was 5, my Dad took me on a walking route that had a strict "animals on a leash" rule. But on that day, someone had decided to break that particular proviso. The next thing I knew, as that woman came around the corner, her Great Dane came running at me. I was so terrified I tried running away. But the dumb mutt didn't stop there. It just kept running after me the whole way. Eventually, the park-keeper stepped in to enforce the leash rule - but by then, the damage had been done."
"Man, that's rough.", Roland shook his head. "But I wouldn't let one bad experience get me down about dogs."
"It's not just that one time.", Raquel almost screamed. "It's every time I see a dog, it's first thought is to come closer. It reminds me of that time and I can't get a break from dogs at all." Then she noticed something. "Except for right now, and this morning. The dogs didn't seem to be concerned with me. They were all clawing at the school building."
It was then that they noticed several people coming towards them. "I've never seen these people before and I'm not sure I want to again.", Artie realised.
"Yeah, it's suspicious.", Drew realised. He and the others thus, ducked behind a corner, as he spoke into his communicator. "Beck, are there any signs of suspicious activity?"
"You mean is there a Boma causing havoc?", Beck said in response. He went over to his computer and did some typing. "Ah, there is one out there. Some kind of humanoid dog."
This caused Raquel to shudder. "Did he say 'dog'?"
"Just great.", Ricky sighed. "Beck, it looks like we'll be going in 1 man short."
"Why?", Kalia asked. "All 5 of you are needed to defeat the Boma."
"Don't ask.", was Artie's reply. He then turned to Raquel. "Go home, Raquel. We'll handle this."
Raquel wasted no time in running off. "So how do we intend to win with one man down?", Roland asked.
"We improvise.", was Drew's answer.
Elsewhere, on the edge of the woods, Switcher was admiring his handiwork from afar. "I'm making good prrrogrrress.", he nodded.
"Hold it right there." He turned around to see 4 of the Rangers show up. "What're you up to?", one of them asked. Switcher didn't know who it was due to a mix of colourblindness and not knowing any of their identities. But he did notice there were only 4 of them.
"Ah, the Powerrr Rrrangerrrrs.", Switcher growled. "I was inforrrmed therrrre werrre 5 of you. But you fourrr will make a good start."
It was then that Hellivore showed up. "First, make sure we can take their powers from them. Then you can turn them into dogs."
"Okay.", Switcher answered him, before sending out 4 collars, all of which latched onto the Rangers. Hellivore then performed a sword slash, creating a plume of smoke. When the smoke cleared, the Rangers were now morphed, but were still in pain from the collars.
"We've got to get out of here.", Ricky said, drawing his Gearshift Saber and cutting through his chain. The others did likewise.
"No!", Hellivore gasped.
"Thanks for telling us the plan.", Ricky announced. "Now we can stop it."
"You won't get that chance. I'll stop you here and now.", Hellivore responded as he presented his sword. He then leapt in and delivered a slash to Ricky, before doing likewise to Artie, Drew and finally Roland, though not without some resistance from the latter.
A group of Savants leapt in to attack. "Who let these guys out?", Artie asked as he kicked the Savants down.
"Clearly the Bomas don't care for leash laws.", Roland remarked as he did likewise.
Switcher then joined the battle, howling as he delivered a scratch attack to all the 4 Rangers, before leaping back to knock all of them down. Hellivore then blew him out of their Ranger suits with a blast from his eyes. "Now I can use my powerrr on a rrrreally satisfying tarrrget.", Switcher hissed as he fired one of his beams at them.
"Get back.", Drew called out as he pushed the others away, getting hit with the beam and turning into a pug. The pug then began squeaking.
"He turned Drew into a dog?", Artie said in confusion, before having a realisation. "So that explains those disappearances and the sudden influx of dogs."
"Let's get out of here.", Ricky urged as he picked up the dog and set off running with the others in the opposite direction.
"Leave them.", Helllivore urged. "They'll come back to try and save their friend. And then we'll get all of them."
Back at the underground lair of the Rangers, Raquel had explained her story to Beck and Kalia. "Wow, so this Boma couldn't have come at a worse time for you, with all these dogs around.", Beck surmised.
"I know.", Raquel sighed. "I feel so helpless. Between all the dogs appearing and the people disappearing and now our Boma this week is a dog man…" She then had a realisation. "Beck, can you get me a list of all the people who've disappeared recently?"
"I'll see what I can do.", Beck nodded nervously before going over to the computer and doing some typing. Within a minute, he had brought up a list. "Do you recognise these names?"
"Not all of them, but there is something I can see in common among the ones I do recognise. They all live in the same street. And it's the same street where I ran into all those dogs."
Before she could say what she had figured out, Ricky, Artie and Roland all ran in, carrying a pug. "Beck, we've figured out where those dogs are coming from and where those people went."
Raquel almost flinched at the sight of the small dog, but then she collected herself. "Let me guess, that's Drew?"
"How did you-?", Artie asked.
"I've been doing some investigative work of my own.", was Raquel's answer. "And from what I've realised, and the fact they're only three of you and a dog, it's easy to work out." She reached out and took the pug into her hand. "That Boma did this. And I'm going to make him undo it."
Out in the streets, Reptillia was combing through the humans transformed into dogs until she found one of them. "Ah, you're who I'm looking for.", she stated as she uttered a reversal chant. The dog in her hand changed from a Rottweiler into a teenage boy. "Daniel Rashton.", Reptillia noted.
"Oh thank you.", Daniel sighed. "I don't know how you did that but I'm glad you did."
"Don't be too happy, Mr. Rashton.", Reptillia shook her head as a Savant approached. "I didn't save you purely to be heroic. In fact, I have my own reason to have you back as a human." Daniel could briefly be heard screaming loud enough to alert passers by. Unfortunately, there were none. Fortunately, Daniel still emerged from the alley, seemingly unharmed and continuing with his day.
Out in the quarry, Raquel stood there, wearing a thick bomber jacket. "Hey, Boma!", she yelled. "If you want to torment me by turning me into a dog, then do it. I'm standing right here."
Hellivore and Switcher quickly teleported in, with a group of Savants flanking him. "It's strange for the enemy to be requesting to be defeated, but who am I to turn down a request from a beautiful lady?", Hellivore noted. "Switcher, do your thing."
"Rrright away.", Switcher howled before firing his beam. But as he did so, Raquel opened the jacket to reveal a puppy, who took the shot and turned back into Drew. "What? How did she avoid my beam?"
"You dumb mutt, she tricked you into restoring her ally.", Hellivore scolded, hitting the Boma with his sword.
"Thanks for that.", Drew said to Raquel as he brushed himself off. "I don't know how much longer I could've taken all that fur."
"You haven't trrriumphed yet, Rrrangerrrs!", Switcher hissed. "I still have my trrransforrrrmed brrrrethrrrren on call. Come forrrrth and crrrrush my enemies."
A group of humans, all wearing different kinds of collars, leapt into view, adopting feral poses against the two Rangers. "Forget about somebody?" The dog-men looked around before Ricky and the others appeared, managing to subdue them with a series of manoeuvres designed to disable them as harmlessly as possible. "They may be our enemy, but that doesn't mean we have to hurt them.", Artie pointed out. "They're still people's dogs."
"Grrrr. You won't send me to the dog pound!", Switcher growled. "Savants, get them!"
"Start Up! Ready, Go!" In a flash, everyone was morphed, and a battle broke out. Two Savants swung their clubs at Ricky, who blocked and knocked them down, before turning his attention to a Red Savant "I thought we already took care of these guys.", he commented as he kicked said Red Savant away, before punching 4 more Savants down with one blow.
Roland was kicking down more Savants. "Artie, double team?", he asked.
"Alright.", Artie responded as the two leapt into the air, pulling out their Dune Bow and Trek Blaster to fire at the other Red Savant and his entourage, surrounding them in a fireball.
Drew then kicked a Savant into the nearby lake. "Take a dive.", he commented as this transpired.
Raquel then began ruthlessly beating down a group of Savants, including one of the Red ones, with her Motor Staff. "This is for trying to exploit my second greatest fear.", she declared as she did this. Switcher then leapt into battle and knocked her back with a scratch, sending her over the cliff. However, she landed safely and pulled out her Vroom Blaster. "Bad boy!", she yelled as she fired at Switcher, only to miss.
"You'd betterrr hope I don't have rrrrabies.", Switcher mocked as he bit into Raquel, before throwing her away. "See how you like being the thing thrrrown to be caught."
The other Rangers appeared, only for Switcher to scratch his way through them all, before blasting them back with a beam from his mouth. "That's it.", Raquel realised. "He may be a monster, but at the end of the day, he's still a dog." As Switcher began running towards them, Raquel pointed her finger forward. "Sit!"
Switcher stopped, crouching down onto all fours and scratching his nose. "Yes ma'am."
"Good boy.", Raquel said mockingly. She then charged up her Motor Staff. "Now catch the stick." The weapon flew into Switcher, buffeting him significantly.
"Let's neuter this pooch.", Ricky declared. "Drive Cannon!" The Rangers' current strongest weapon appeared in their hands, with the engine slotting into place. "Hyper Engine, set!"
As the engine was started and energy flowed into it, Ricky aimed the weapon at Switcher. "Target locked!", the other 4 all said as the meter went from empty to full in mere minutes.
"Fire!", Ricky announced as he pressed the two buttons.
A blast exited the Drive Cannon and hit Switcher straight on. "I should've stuck to chasing my tail.", he cried as he collapsed and exploded.
With his death, all the unconscious humans turned back into dogs. "Oh thank goodness.", Roland breathed a sigh of relief. "That means everyone else is ok."
From the side, Hellivore looked on in annoyance. "Even if he failed me once, I'm still giving Switcher a treat." He pointed his arm into the air. "Winds of Revival, Blow!"
The tornado blew in and reconstructed Switcher as a giant. "Time for things to get rrruff!", he howled.
The Rangers were quick to react to this. "Beck, send the goodies.", Ricky radioed.
The Zords emerged from their cave, combining into the Racer Megazord on cue. "Racer Megazord, assembly complete!"
"Let's go!", Artie said as he pushed his lever, propelling the Megazord towards Switcher.
"Take this!", Switcher growled as he began to wrestle with the Megazord, attempting to bite on its hands. The stalemate swiftly ended when the Megazord kicked him, sending him flying over its shoulder. But he managed to land on his feet. "Suck it, cats!" Switcher then threw one of his chain collars at the Megazord's left foot, using it to pull the robot to the floor. "Play dead."
"Good idea, how about you try it?", Ricky asked as he had the Megazord deploy a Exhaust Cannon, shooting the oversized dog down. Now free, the Racer Megazord spun forward and knocked Switcher down for the count. "Racer Megazord! Exhaust Saber!" The Megazord deployed its weapon and began to charge it with energy.
"Ruh-roh.", Switcher gulped.
"High Speed Slash!" The Racer Megazord brought its sword down on Switcher mortally wounding him.
"If I was a cat, I'd have 7 lives left.", were Switcher's last words before he collapsed and died, going up in flames before a triumphant Racer Megazord.
Back at the Boma Palace, Malgramon was livid. "I can't believe two of you working together still failed to produce results!", he snarled as he zapped both Malchemist and Hellivore.
"Neither can I.", Hellivore fumed. "And what's worse is that this was our last chance to gain the Rangers' powers for two weeks."
Malgramon immediately ceased with the agony beams. "Explain what you mean by that."
"Yes, Hellivore. Please enlighten us.", Reptillia added. "I in particular would like to know how you forgot about the Flying Fortress you and Malchemist developed. A way for us to go anywhere quickly."
Hellivore gasped in shock at this realisation. "I apologise. The existence of the fortress slipped my mind in the heat of the moment. But I overheard the Rangers discussing their upcoming plans for what they call 'Spring Break' a few days ago…"
At the town plaza, where the 5 had agreed to meet in public with the school closed for spring break, Ricky, Drew, Artie and Roland were all waiting at a cafe. "I just hope that Mrs. C is willing to give us the go ahead now.", Artie stated. "I already packed my swimming costume in case we come across a pool." Roland looked nervous at his suggestion, but decided not to say anything.
"I don't see why she'd still be anxious.", Drew pointed out. "Everyone turned up alright, with little psychological damage." He pointed to Jacqueline and Scott, feeding each other cake at the table opposite them. "Though I haven't checked up on Daniel personally, I'm told he's alright."
It was then that Raquel came running. "So, what's the word from the teacher?", Ricky asked.
"You'll be pleased to hear that she's letting me take all of you.", Raquel answered. "On the condition that each of you calls home at specific times I have written down here." She presented a sheet of paper, which each of them took note of. "If any of us misses their call, I'm to call my mom and explain it."
"Sounds good.", Roland pointed out. "But how will they know who to call?"
"I've given numbers for the hotels to all of our parents.", Raquel explained. "And in case there's any trouble, Kalia's set up some kind of 'magical tunnel system' so we can access our gear."
"Well, everything seems in order.", Drew noted. "So what's stopping us from just setting off?"
"Nothing.", came the answer from Raquel. The car's out front, so let's get going." And so everyone set off on what they thought would be an uneventful spring break, little knowing of the repercussions to come out of it.
