Prologue
Bella
A year and a half ago, I became an Admiral in Star Command. Star Command was an ever-changing branch of the military, think Navy but in outer space. Like the Navy, Star Command had some land bound units. I became a member of one such unit stationed in Forks, Washington.
When I first heard where I would be heading, I thought it had to be a joke. Why would Star Command assign me to a town where a teenaged girl fell in love with a sparkly vampire. Thank you, Stephenie Meyer. Worse than the Twilight Saga being set in Forks was the fact I used to live there. I shuddered. I had fled for my life when my boyfriend had tried to kill me. It was my last year of middle school when it happened. My father, Charlie, had requested an emergency transfer. Giving the circumstances, the request had been granted. I left many friends and only one kept in touch.
Fear washed over me after I read my new orders. Forks being a joke flew out the window. Said window slammed closed with a mental bang when I saw the signature – James Olden.
Not about to let fear keep me from accepting the prestigious command. Many would accept the duty assignment without question or fear. The retiring Admiral handpicked me as his successor, and I wasn't about to let Olden down. I felt lucky.
My luck was short-lived. If it hadn't been for the wonderful friends I met in the first few days after moving to Forks, I wouldn't be alive today.
