Part 3

It was strange walking into L Corp and not seeing Lena in her office, sitting behind her desk, hard at work.

Kara sighed as she shut the door to Lena's office and sat down at her own lonely desk.

She had a few tasks to complete but it wasn't like it would take a whole week to do them.

Lena had given Kara her number and told her that if she wanted to call her, she could.

Kara knew that Andrea, one of Lena's oldest friends-actually maybe her only oldest friend- was going with her. Kara didn't know how to feel about that. She knew of Andrea Rojas but she didn't know that much about her.

Making a decision, Kara sat down at her computer and typed in her name;

She was rich, successful, beautiful, not as beautiful as Lena but still...no boyfriend, no husband, nothing. What if she was like Lena?

Did her and Lena have a history? What if Andrea wanted to rekindle that? Kara found her heart thudding away in her chest, making it difficult to breathe.

Swallowing and licking her lips, Kara pushed herself away from the desk, trying to calm down. Reaching for her phone, she scrolled until she got Lena's number and her thumb hovered over the call button.

Should she?

No. She was being silly. Lena would have told her if Andrea was a threat, wouldn't she?

Kara put her phone down and took a breath.

This was ridiculous.

She hadn't known Lena for that long yet, how could she feel so strongly about someone she'd only just met?

Shaking her head, Kara closed the web page on Andrea Rojas and went back to her own work.

Andrea gave Lena a knowing look as she pressed a glass of wine into her friend's hand.

"You're meant to be relaxing Lena. Not worrying over someone who may or may not be interested in you."

It sounded harsh and Lena glared at her. Andrea's expression softened and she took the lounger next to Lena.

"This week will be good for you Len. You need a break, I keep telling you this and it will give this-"

"Kara."

"-Kara, some time to work out how she feels."

Lena's frown turned into one of concern.

"I thought that too but what if this is all a waste of time and she doesn't return my feelings? What if I'm sitting here, trying to relax and take a break when she's back in National city scared out of her mind that she can't do this? That she doesn't want to do this?"

Lena sat up and set her wine glass down on the small table between them.

The pool was like a shimmering lake in front of them and Lena watched as the sun bounced off of it.

Andrea sat up too and placed a comforting hand on Lena's shoulder.

"Tell you what, why don't we go for a swim?"

Lena waved her away.

"I don't want to swim."

Andrea stood and put her hands on her hips, looking down at the Luthor woman.

"Afraid if we race, I'll beat you?"

Lena smirked.

"Like you could."

"Prove it." Andrea goaded.

Lena looked up at her and not one to back down from a challenge, she nodded and stood up.

"You're on."

Kara's phone was taunting her, she just knew it.

It had been five days and each day she thought of calling Lena. Of telling her to come home, come back to work just so she could see her but Lena had told Kara to take this time to figure out what she wanted.

Kara let out a breath and rested her head back against the couch.

What did she want?

She liked Lena. She liked Lena a lot.

She was stunning, smart, kind and passionate. She was trying to be better than her family's name sake and Kara had to admire that in her.

She felt safe when she was with Lena and even though Kara was Supergirl and apart from Kryptonite, nothing could harm her really, she still liked the feeling of being emotionally safe; she never feared that Lena would suddenly judge her or turn around and use things that were said in confidence against her.

She could count on Lena to keep her secrets.

Then why haven't you told her you're Supergirl? A tiny voice in the back of Kara's mind asked.

Kara frowned.

"I don't know."

Yeah you do. It's 'cos she's a Luthor isn't it?

"N-no."

You know she's not like Lex.

"I do."

Oh Rao, now she was arguing with her conscience, Kara thought with a roll of her eyes.

Then why not tell her?

"Because she..."

She what? She wouldn't accept it? She wouldn't understand? Or is it because you know that no one else would want you to tell her and you care what they think of you?

Kara closed her eyes. That was a big part of it, yes.

She's supposed to be the woman you love. If you love her and trust her as much as you say you do, then doesn't she deserve to know?

Kara nodded.

"She does but if I tell her-if she knows that I'm Supergirl- she'll be in danger, just like the rest of my family and the people I care about."

Lena doesn't scare easily and she's in no more danger than she would be if you kept quiet. She's a Luthor, she will always be hunted, but with you there by her side, with her in the know about you, think of how much safer she'd be.

Kara blinked. You have a point-I have a point...or my conscious does anyway.

A soft smile lifted the corners of Kara's mouth.

She would tell Lena. When she got back from her retreat, she'd tell her everything and then maybe Kara could find the courage to be with Lena; as both Kara and Supergirl.

Feeling better about things, Kara went on her laptop and looked at the latest celebrity news but what she saw almost stopped her heart...

There was a picture of Lena in the pool at the retreat with another woman...and they were...hugging? It looked like, as Kara lent forward and squinted.

Was that Andrea? Why was she hugging Lena? Why did it look so...intimate?

Grabbing her phone, Kara called Alex.

"H-hello?" Alex answered groggily.

"Alex, look at the new photo of Lena on celebrity news."

There was a slight pause.

"Um...ok."

"Have you found it?"

Kara could hear Alex as she typed on her phone; heard her sniff a couple times.

It was late and Kara had probably woken her up but this was important and what were sisters for if you couldn't call them at unholy hours to talk about your worries?

"Oh yeah, Kara that's Andrea Rojas. Lena and her go way back."

"Yeah I know who she is but were they ever...romantically involved? Does it look like they are in that photo?"

Another pause from Alex.

"I think maybe once they were. The media made such a big deal about but it ended I think and they stayed friends and as for the photo, that could just be a friendly hug." She added for good measure.

Kara's heart rate picked up again.

"So they could have...rekindled something?"

"Kara, it looks like a friend hugging another friend. It's not like she's groping her or anything."

"She's in her bathing suit."

"So? Wouldn't you be if you were by a pool?"

Kara bit her bottom lip, it was strange but this time, Alex's words wasn't helping to ease her mind.

Maybe she should call Lena and just confirm it but then that would make Kara look like a jealous girlfriend and she wasn't even Lena's girlfriend yet.

Besides, if Lena and Andrea had rekindled their romance or whatever it was, maybe Kara would never get that chance anyway.

The thought depressed Kara and after saying goodbye to Alex and hanging up, Kara went to bed.

Andrea lay on her stomach on Lena's bed, her chin propped up by her fist as Lena relaxed against the headboard.

"So tell me, when you get back to National City, do you think you and Kara will become a couple?"

Lena shrugged as she played with the ends of her still wet hair. She'd wanted to shower after the swim and Andrea had gone back to her own room and done the same but now they were both in Lena's room, just having some girl talk and waiting for the room service they'd ordered.

"I don't know Andrea. I hope so but this is all so new to Kara. I don't want her to enter into something she's not ready for."

Andrea gave her friend a sympathetic look.

"Even if it means you getting your heart broken again?"

Lena nodded and her eyes darkened momentarily.

Andrea sighed.

"You really do like her." She almost whispered.

Lena nodded.

"I really do."

A bright smile came to Andrea's lips.

"Why don't you call her?"

"What? Right now?"

Andrea sat up, looking excited.

"Yeah! I bet she'd love to hear from you."

"Or she's decided against the idea of me and her, and me calling her would just freak her out."

Andrea chuckled.

"I don't think so."

Lena sighed and Andrea dipped her head to catch her friend's gaze.

"You do want to call her, don't you?"

Lena looked into Andrea's kind blue eyes and nodded.

"Yes..."

"Then do it, Lena."

Lena bit her lip as she reached for her phone and scrolled through her contacts until she got to Kara's name.

Her thumb hovered over the call button, unsure.

"Call her." Andrea urged.

"What if she's sleeping? It is late."

"Lena, if she likes you like you like her, she won't care what time it is."

Sucking in a deep breath, Lena hit the call button.

Lena sat up and tapped a finger on her knee as she waited for Kara to answer.

It took a while but eventually the line clicked.

"Lena?"

Kara's voice sounded heavy with sleep and if Lena wasn't mistaken, it sounded a little uneven, like she'd been crying? What had done that? Lena wondered.

"Kara, hi. How are you?"

Kara cleared her throat.

"F-fine. How's the retreat?"

"It's good, it's great actually. Kara...are you okay?"

"Me? Yeah. Yeah I'm good."

But Kara's tone was too hard.

Lena frowned.

"Has something happened?"

"No."

"Are you sure?"

"Positive."

One word answers. Not good.

Before Lena could ask another question, Kara jumped in.

"Are you alone?"

Lena's eyes shot to Andrea and Lena frowned.

"Uh no, Andrea's here."

There was a pause.

"Kara?"

"Andrea's there." Kara repeated.

"Yes she signed up for this retreat too, I told you, remember? Andrea's my friend, Kara." Lena added, feeling like she needed to.

"No I know, I just..."

Lena's frown deepened.

Did she really think that she and Andrea were...more than friends?

"Kara, I can't pretend to know what's going through your head right now but just to assure you, Andrea and I are friends, nothing more."

"Wasn't you guys a thing once?" Kara snapped, bitterness coating her voice.

Lena frowned and Andrea just blinked.

"No...who-who told you that?"

"Apparently it was a known thing. The media blew up with it one day."

"Well of course the media did! A Luthor and a Rojas in the same bed? Two of the richest daughter's of billionaire's together as a couple?! Of course they'd blow something like that out of proportion!"

"So you're saying it's not true?"

"No. Never. Me and Andrea have always been fast friends Kara, nothing more."

There was a pause on the other end and Lena waited patiently.

"Only...there's a photo on here...of the two of you...in the pool."

"We went swimming today, that's true."

"You're hugging."

"I beat Andrea at a race and she was congratulating me. Friends are allowed to hug Kara, surely you know this."

Lena was getting annoyed now. She felt like she was being accused of something she hadn't done.

"Do you want to know why I swimming? Why Andrea suggested we race?"

Another pause.

"Ok..."

"It's because I was sitting here, thinking about you. About how you are, what you were doing, what you were thinking in regards to us. If I was going back to National city and walking into a new possible- relationship or if I was only going back to get my heart broken. Andrea suggested the swimming race to take my mind off of it and it did...for a while." Lena added.

"Oh...Lena, I-I'm so sorry." Kara apologised sincerely.

Lena smiled warmly and all of her anger faded into nothing.

Her voice softened as she spoke;

"It's alright Kara. I'm sorry you had to find that photo. I can only imagine how the press must have made it look."

Kara didn't say anything for a little while.

"You're coming home soon though, right?"

Lena smiled.

"Right. It's only another two days Kara."

"I...I miss you." Kara admitted shyly.

"I miss you too."

Andrea pouted and Lena threw a pillow at her.

"Can we talk when you get back?"

"Of course. I hope you've had ample time to figure things out." Lena said gently.

"I have." Kara answered and Lena could hear the decisiveness in her voice.

It seemed like Kara had made a decision and everything- her mind, her gut and her heart- told Lena that she would be happy to get back to National city.

Author's Note: Ok so I wanted Kara to get a little jealous, maybe help her to work out her feelings, after all, no one gets jealous just because, there's always some amount of care there, if that makes sense...?

Anyway I'm glad you're all still reading and I hope that you're still enjoying it. Part 4 will be uploaded soon.

I still enjoy reading reviews, just saying ;)
