Well, whether by sheer happenstance or by some sort of quantum event, it seems that Jason's martial arts training has allowed him to use his body's energy to propel him in the air. This shouldn't be possible, since people don't usually fly.
Jason had two theories as to why this happened: 1) Maybe his martial arts training actually gave him this ability. This is possible, but unlikely. I mean, some expert Chinese monks have been known to levitate, according to legend. Jason never did Kung Fu, only Karate, but all martial arts recognize the importance of ki energy. 2) Due to the quantum event that took place when summoning Rainbow Dash, some of her magic got infused into him. This seemed more likely, since Jason has never seen or heard firsthand of a martial artist who was so gifted in ki use that they could fly.
"Damn it, slow down, will ya!" Jason said as he flew over the East River at a high enough altitude to avoid detection.
"This whole thing is so weird, dude! I mean, you have no wings or anything." Rainbow said as she slowed down a bit to be within range of Jason.
"I have a crazy theory as to why this happened. You know about the quantum event?"
Rainbow nodded.
"Don't pegasi have magic to fly, or is it biology?" Jason asked.
"Well, it is mostly biology, but there is a magic component to it, mainly in terms of ludicrous velocity that should tear my body to shreds." She replied.
"Well, my theory is that the portal's quantum event sent some of your magic into my body at contact, giving me the ability to fly. I mean, my other ki theory sounds cooler, but is unlikely with my universe's physics." Jason said with more certainty.
Rainbow thought about this for a moment, and nodded again. "Yeah, that could make sense, besides, I wonder if this will impact your sister at all. Will she get uncanny abilities, or just you?" She asked him, a bit puzzled.
"To be honest, I have no idea. Anyways, this is the Long Island Sound. It is some 90 miles long, and 3-20 miles wide. If you want to do any cool aerial stuff, this is where to do it. I am just going to figure out how to do this, you know?"
She laughed: "yeah yeah, I am going to see how the air currents work here. My apogee of speed is 3836 mph, or mach 5. Wonder if this universe has good currents."
Woah, did Jason just hear Dashie right? That is around Mach 5, faster than any supersonic aircraft in the world. "Did you just say 3835 miles per hour? That is definitely faster than the sound barrier, how does that not crush your organs and suffocate you?" Jason asked quite bluntly.
"Uh, dingus, I told you about the MAGIC part of it. Probably why you can fly, anyways, if I break this record, I will probably create a Sonic Rainboom. You might like this, kid." She grinned, and began to increase her velocity. Jason hovered over the Sound, wanting to analyse this potential achievement for himself. Dashie went faster and faster, and Jason could see a cone of air form around her body.
"Change of plans, I gotta see this!" Jason said as he began flying in a parallel direction to his new friend. The cone of air got thinner and thinner, and Jason could have sworn that it looked like a prism. Based on what Jason remembers from science class (which is not that much), a prism, when split, creates visible light. That probably is what the Sonic Rainboom is, practically.
"Incoming Rainboom in 3….2….1….."
And then it happened. The air cone burst, sending a flurry of colourful light across the Sound, making it all the way to Hartford, Connecticut. She turned around quickly, and saw that Jason was trailing behind at a meager 75 miles per hour, a moderate pace for a novice flyer. She found a cloud to sit on and wanted to scare her new friend.
"I don't think I beat my record, but that was pretty damn cool, if I were to say so myself. Also, for someone who has never flown before, 75 miles per hour is damn impressive! Just sayin," She said, sitting on a cloud a few metres above me.
"Damn it! You scared me, I could have fallen into the Sound. I am not steady with this, yet" Jason said, a bit pissed off.
"Grow up, Jason, I was just messing with you." Dashie said, thinking that her little stunt was a clever idea. She would do it again, but not for now.
Rainbow Dash had another, less dangerous idea. "I am going to plummet down to sea level, and see if I can make waves with my speed. C'mon! Even at 75 miles per hour you can probably do that! And with that, she descended some 8500 feet in a matter of seconds, quickly adjusting her angle to be a mere foot or two above the water. Clipping at a steady (but slow for her) 250 miles per hour across the water, giant ripples in the ocean were made by her velocity. If there were any boats out, it would look like a jetski.
"Okay, now you try it. Try not to drown, kid!" Dashie said with a smug look, sort of expecting her new friend to fail miserably at this seemingly easy task. Jason took it a bit easier, descending in some 30 seconds instead of Rainbow Dash's 3 second swoop. He went as fast as he could over the water, with his sneakers brushing over the water (he put shoes on before he flew out the window). Obviously, Jason did not fly as fast as Rainbow Dash, but it was one of the coolest things he had ever done in his life; possibly even more than winning that match against his sensei for his first black belt.
"Not bad, you didn't drown. I clocked a good 80 miles per hour on you. Solid!" Rainbow Dash said as she was flying next to him for this exercise.
Jason was confused. How does someone know exact speed without having a radar gun?
"How did you know how fast I was going? You don't have a radar gun, do you?" Jason asked, baffled at the teal pony's statement of his velocity.
"I know things, okay. Trust me. Maybe when you get back home to that quantum device thingy you can summon a speedometer. I don't judge." She said, giggling.
Jason saw the sun rising further in the east, and remembered to check his watch. "Shit, I have to go back and take care of my sister. She could be awake any minute! I will get in so much trouble if my parents come home early and find her home alone!"
Rainbow Dash realized that her new friend was probably right. She made a sharp 180 degree turn and motioned for Jason to follow her.
"Don't go too fast this time, I have to show you where my apartment is, okay? It's at 96th and 3rd. Nevermind, you don't know what that is. Let me lead this time, okay?"
She begrudgingly agreed, and led Jason take the lead. Even at a relatively slow 80 miles per hour, it took no more than 10 minutes to get back to the apartment on the 13th floor. He opened the window, and let both himself and Rainbow Dash back in the house.
"It's a good thing I left the window unlocked. I don't have a key!" Jason said, thankful that he remembered to do this. While on the subject, Jason locked the window, to prevent any pigeons from flying into his room. That happened a few weeks prior, and let's just say Jason's mother was NOT happy.
Jason heard footsteps from his sister's room, and forgot that he left his door open in the night, to get better air circulation. Asthma isn't fun.
"Oh...my….god….What is Rainbow Dash doing in my brother's bedroom!?!?!" Sophie said, squealing with joy.
"Ah dang it. We have to let her in on the secret now." Dashie said, nudging Jason.
Sophie ran over to Rainbow Dash and gave her a hug. Dashie blushed.
This was going to get weird, really quickly.
