Aaron didn't mention to Sean that he'd sat in Spencer's seat. Aaron paused to look at him. He still hadn't told him about Spencer. He sighed and went back to pacing beside the window, waiting for his team to arrive.
Garcia ran in just three minutes later, her laptop under her arm which she quickly opened and set on the table. "What is it? What's wrong?" she said, looking to Aaron with a fearful expression.
Aaron glanced at Sean who was watching Garcia. "Our father," Aaron said. "He's escaped prison."
Garcia gasped, falling back into her seat and just gaping up at Aaron. "How?" she said, her fingers shaking over her mouth. "I-I didn't think people could do that anymore."
"They didn't share details, just that he was out. I want us working to find him. Sean and I know what he's like, we have a profile on him."
"What will he do if we don't find him?"
Aaron was taken aback by the question and he swallowed thickly.
"I don't know," he said.
Spencer was counting how long they'd been driving. It had been two hours forty minutes. It felt longer to Spencer despite him knowing exactly how many seconds had passed.
Finally, Ed stopped in front of a small house. He didn't look at the house though, instead he stretched his neck toward the window and looked at a house across the street. Spencer followed his gaze to another small house, this one was painted a soft green shade, with white collums and highlights that complimented the dark roof.
Ed shut off the engine and unbuckled, looking with narrowed eyes at the house. Spencer didn't speak.
Ed turned with a sharp look aimed at Spencer.
"You scream or try anything..." Ed paused before smiling darkly. "I will kill you, and then Aaron an-"
"Okay," Spencer hissed. He shut his mouth quickly when Ed narrowed his eyes.
"You better. I'll be ten minutes, alright."
He looked at the house again as Spencer nodded.
"Alright."
Ed pushed open his door which groaned against its hinges. He slammed it shut and gave Spencer one last warning look before he headed over to the house.
He hopped up the steps, smoothing his hair down at the back and fixing a charming smile on his face.
He glanced back at the car and saw his son watching with wide eyes.
Ed straightened his shirt and shifted so the pants didn't look so tight. He reached up and grabbed the brass knocker, hitting it against the door four times before stepping back and holding his smile.
He heard someone inside and he put his hands behind his back.
The door opened and Ed's smile fell.
An elderly woman stood in the small gap in the door that she'd opened. Behind her thick-rimmed glasses she looked up cautiously at Ed.
"Yes?" Her voice shook as did her hands, charmingly senile. Ed cleared his throat and craned his neck to try and see behind the woman. In response she started to close the door and Ed held his hands up in defence.
"My apologies, ma'am," he said and he forced another smile. "I was expecting someone else."
"I own this place," the old woman said indignantly and Ed clenched his teeth together, his smile growing more deadly.
"Oh, I'm sure a good friend of mine lived here before," he said and he smiled sadly.
The old woman frowned but she opened the door some more. Spencer was watching from the car, his hands trembling.
"Who?"
"Mary," Ed said and he smiled sweetly. "Mary Bin- Mary Hotchner."
The old woman's eyes opened much wider and she nodded quickly.
"Mary. Yes, yes, she rented this place from me."
"Wonderful," Ed said. He painted his face with a curious look, tilting his eyebrows up and blinking slowly. "You wouldn't happen to know where she went? I lost contact and this was the last address I knew of."
The woman scowled at Ed, clearly confused before her face broke suddenly and she became sympathetic. "Oh, don't you know?"
Ed frowned. "Know what?" he said in a low voice.
"Oh, Mary, the poor dear, she died of cancer. Had to have been more than ten years now. Yes, such a shame, much too young."
Ed's hands clenched at his side. He wasn't smiling anymore.
"Are you okay?" The woman was looking at Ed slowly. His eye twitched and before he did something that would have him caught, he turned and strode away from the house, much to Spencer's relief.
He got into the car and Spencer pressed himself to the door.
"Did you know?" Ed muttered, gritting his teeth and glaring ahead as he started to car.
"Know? Know what?"
"Your mother is dead, Myles," Ed said and he glanced at Spencer with a venomous look.
"M-my mom? S-she's in... wait my real mom?" Spencer said, stammering on each word as he thought of his frail mother in Benningtons.
"Mary," Ed snapped. "My Mary. She's dead. They didn't tell me." He slammed his hand on the wheel and Spencer jumped. "They didn't fucking tell me!"
Garcia already had every news outlet covering Aaron's father's escape on her laptop and she was digging into the reports when the rest of team arrived.
Aaron had them all sit down before he explained.
Rossi went pale as soon as he heard the news and he sat back in his chair, staring across at Aaron as he pressed a finger to his lips thoughtfully.
"Some of you may not know the actions of my father so I'll explain. While we were still children and living under his care he kidnapped and murdered two women. He dumped their bodies in a river near our home. He was made a suspect when a witness identified him as the last person being with one of the girls. He was out when they searched our house and they arrested our mother when they found the girls' belongings in our basement. We went to stay with our grandparents and at some point that night our father came by and took our youngest brother from his bed. It was believed that he took Myles out on the lake and shot him in the boat before throwing his body into over."
Aaron took a deep breath and he looked at his brother who had clasped his hands in front of him on the table and was staring at them with a dull look on his face.
JJ looked up at Hotch with sympathy and he looked away from her quickly.
"Where do you think he'll go first?" Morgan said slowly, still taking in Aaron's story.
Aaron shook his head. "I won't pretend like I know the man as a son would know his father. I made an effort to distance myself from him and his thinking. If I were to guess, as a profiler, I'd suggest that he's seeking out something from his past, something to connect him to reality again."
Morgan looked between Aaron and Sean.
"As long as we're here, we're safe," Aaron said. "And there are officers protecting Jack."
Rossi blew out a breath and he sat up. "I never thought I'd be working on this case again," he said with a sad shake of his head. Despite that he gave Aaron a firm look of determination. "Where should we start?"
Spencer clutched the side of his face as Ed drove. He'd calmed down, driving less erratically.
He'd hit Spencer before he'd driven away from the house. He'd pulled him up from the door where he'd been shrinking and hurled his fist into Spencer's other eye.
Spencer saw his face in the side mirror and could make out a freshly swollen eye joining the dimming black one Aaron had given him.
He looked at Ed before quickly looking back at the floor. He pressed his fingers against his eye, trying to work the pain out as it radiated across his skin.
He wanted to ask where they were going but after Ed's outburst, Spencer didn't want to talk to the man again out of fear that he'd do worse than smack him.
"You know-"
Spencer looked up sharply when Ed spoke.
"It was going to be me, you, and Mary. Together again like it used to be. I always liked that you would listen to everything I said. The other two grew up and Aaron turned against me. You were still young and faithful. Mary needed to be taught some more things but I had something with you."
Spencer gulped and pressed his fingers hard to his bruised face, making sure he was still present.
"I wanted Aaron that night but I thought it would be worse for him to have to remember. I knew it would kill him knowing that he couldn't turn you against me."
"What were y-you gonna do with us?" Spencer asked and Ed chuckled sadly.
"Start again. A placid wife and a dutiful son, that's all a man could ask for."
Control, Spencer thought. That's what you want.
Ed sighed. "Now, well I'm not sure what to do now."
"Let me go. Please," Spencer whispered.
Ed chuckled again and shook his head as he tapped the steering wheel.
"I'll think of something, boy." He looked across at Spencer and sneered. "Maybe we could take a trip to that lake."
"Have you told him?" Rossi asked and Aaron shook his head sharply.
"You have to."
"I know." Aaron he glanced back at his brother. "I should do it now."
Rossi reached out and put his hand on Aaron's shoulder. "It's best he knows."
Aaron turned and paused for a moment before walking over to Sean hesitantly. He sat down on the couch beside him and Rossi stood back and watched.
He watched as Sean lifted his head and Aaron started talking. Aaron fumbled with his hands for a moment before he started gesturing with his story and Rossi scoffed. In many ways he could see how he was related to Spencer Reid.
Rossi didn't intervene when Sean frowned and then sat up straighter and shook his head. He only decided to walk over when Sean stood up from the couch.
"Son, sit down," Rossi said and Sean looked up at him sharply. Sean looked back at Aaron and pointed to Rossi.
"He knows?"
"The whole team knows, Sean. We all only just found out."
"Well it's not true," Sean said quickly. He shook his head and sat back down. "It's can't be true. Our kid brother has been dead for years."
"That's what I thought too." Aaron rubbed his hands together anxiously. "I was cruel to Spencer because I didn't believe him. But Sean, he had our DNA checked and it's a match. He's our brother."
Sean ran his hands through his hair and his knee started to bounce. "How?" he whispered.
"I really don't know," Aaron said. "I just... I wish we'd known sooner."
After a moment of awkward quiet Aaron laughed and he shook his head. "That bastard will have a shock when he finds out too."
Rossi turned slowly to Aaron who was watching his brother again.
"Aaron," he said in a low voice. Aaron looked at him with a frown, his expression lost.
"Why didn't you tell me..." Sean mumbled and he shook his head in his hands.
"Aaron."
Aaron forced himself to look away from his brother and at Rossi.
"What?"
"Spencer," Rossi said, breathing the name out as his eyes widened.
"Yea," Aaron said, motioning to Sean who was still distraught.
"No," Rossi hissed. "Spencer. What if that's where your dad went?"
Aaron stared at Rossi while Morgan, who had been listening from the table, jumped from his seat, understanding exactly what Rossi was implying.
"He doesn't know," Aaron mumbled quietly. He dropped his arms to his side and Sean looked up slowly. "He wouldn't know who Spencer is, let alone where he lives."
"And yet Reid hasn't responded to us since your father got out."
Aaron gaped back at Rossi. "He can't know already."
Morgan had already grabbed his keys and started out the door.
