"Out there!" Aaron leapt from the SUV and pointed to a small boat far out across the water.
Morgan came up to Aaron's side, squinting out at the boat illuminated under the half-moon above.
"That them?" Morgan asked and Aaron nodded, moving closer, toeing at the waters edge. Morgan stared at the boat for another moment before looking frantically up and down the shoreline.
"How the hell did he expect us to get out there?" he said, walking up to the shore and looking right across it's expanse. "There's no boats!"
Aaron followed his gaze down the shore and saw nothing to aid their way across the water. He looked back at the small boat and understood what Ed had intended.
"He wants me to swim over," Aaron said quietly. He looked down at his vest, knowing he may have to take it off for buoyancy.
"We'll find a boat." Rossi came up to the shore beside them. JJ and Emily followed behind, shielding their eyes to get a better look at the still boat sat on the lake.
"Where, Rossi?" Morgan said and he thrust his arms out in front of him, motioning to the bare shoreline. "There's nothing here."
"The police are following, they could find us something," JJ said, looking around nervously.
"There's nothing out-"
Morgan was interrupted by a loud gunshot from across the lake and the entire team froze, their hands reaching for their own guns.
"We can't get a clear shot from here," Emily said, dropping her dominant hand from her gun and lifting the other to her face to bite at her nail.
JJ stared out at the lake and a sudden cry slipped from her lips. She put her hands over her mouth to try and stifle it and she turned her head away.
Morgan stared at the boat, rocking in the water and his hand trembled as he pulled out his gun. He glanced across at Hotch who was gaping at the lake. "Y-you don't think?" Aaron mumbled, unwilling to finish the sentence.
Morgan didn't reply, he reached down and pulled his boot off while Aaron moved closer to the water, the fronts of his shoes dipping into the lake. "Spencer!" he yelled. He looked back at Rossi who looked pale and lost.
Morgan yanked off his other boot.
"I'm going in," Morgan said, ripping at his vest and looking hurriedly out at the water.
Aaron stood on the edge of the lake and cupped his hands over his mouth. "SPENCER!" He turned as Morgan moved past him into the water. Morgan stopped in front of him and Aaron looked away from the boat.
"Here," Morgan said, handing his gun to Aaron as he pulled his socks off and winced at the cold. "Hold this."
Aaron stared at the gun in his hand as Morgan moved further into the lake. He stared until he heard a yell from far out in the water and Aaron ran to Morgan. He looked up at the boat and saw splashing in the water close by. His heart started to hammer as he thought of Spencer Reid grappling with life and death out there.
"No, keep it," he said, pressing the gun back into Morgan's hands. Morgan scowled and tooka step back when Aaron unlaced his shoes.
"What are you doing?"
"I'm coming."
"No! You can't! Ed can just shoot you! You're sitting ducks."
Aaron glanced at JJ as he pulled off his shoes and socks before he turned back to Morgan. "Keep the gun. It's not ideal but you might have to use it."
Morgan nodded, he too was ignoring JJ who turned away and covered her face. Rossi seemed too lost to understand anything other than the boat on the lake and Emily was running back up the path, calling out to the lake's tackle shop for help.
There was a splash across the lake and Morgan took that as his cue. He ran into the lake, splashing water up around him until he was knee-deep. He looked out across the expanse of water where the dainty boat was perched at dead-centre.
There was another sound, one that had Aaron moving. It was scream from across the lake, much louder and longer than any other sound before and Aaron turned to look back at Dave who was staring ahead, his face white and his gun trembling in his grip.
"We need to go," Morgan said, pulling Aaron's attention back to him and the task at hand. Aaron nodded, checking for his gun again.
Morgan led the way further through the water, the two of them trying not to react to the cold depths. Once at waist height Morgan turned around quickly, sending a wave through the water. He nodded to Aaron who looked back at the drifting boat.
"Find Spencer," he said. "Shoot Ed if you see him and find Spencer. He is the only priority."
Morgan nodded in agreement and looked back out at the water. He took a deep breath and then another, rolling his shoulders back as he did. After one more breath he stretched his arms out in front of him and leapt into the water. Aaron followed quickly, working through the shock of the icy-cold water on his face and down his back. It seemed to snake into his very core, chilling him to such a degrees that his arms hesitated in their strokes for the first few seconds.
They swam beside each other, nearing the boat, their panting and splashing strokes breaking the lingering quiet left by the gunshot and the scream. Aaron saw waves growing smaller and gentler as they got close to the area across from the boat. He paused, treading water and pulling in deep breaths of air as he looked at the spot the waves were moving away from. Morgan carried on swimming past it.
Aaron stretched his arms back out and swam to the dissipating waves. He stopped when he got to the centre, treading water as he looked around frantically.
"Spencer!"
He spun around, water splashing up in his eyes.
"SPENCER!"
Morgan swam over, his own head twisting and straining, trying to discern where their youngest agent was. He glanced over at the boat but he couldn't see the young agent inside.
"REID!" Morgan screamed, only stopping when water filled his mouth. He spat ferociously, screaming out again for his friend. "REID! SPENCER!"
"SPENCER!"
Morgan glanced across at Aaron who had made another full turn, gasping and spluttering into the water. Morgan looked around at the lonesome lake and his gaze slowly drifted downwards until he was staring at the water right beneath his chin.
A thought struck him and his chilled body shook without the aid of the cold as he realised what that thought meant. Morgan swallowed and looked up at Aaron who swam a short distance and yelled out for Reid.
"Hotch," Morgan said, his voice quiet under Aaron's screams. Morgan looked at the water and he felt sick. They needed to do something.
"HOTCH!"
Aaron spun around, sending a wave through the water, which rippled at Morgan's neck.
"He's not up here," Morgan said and he looked at the water. Aaron's gaze fell to the water and Morgan saw the realisation hit his face like a death-pallor.
"Oh god..."
Aaron glared at the water, trying to find something beneath it. He met Morgan's eyes once more and without another seconds hesitation he ducked his head and plunged into the icy water.
Morgan followed suit, gulping down a deep breath of air before thrusting his body down. He felt his legs kick out above the surface, thrusting him down.
Aaron swam down, reaching his arms out around him as he searched blindly. He could hear the desperate movement of water close by and he thought of Morgan, and his own hands searching about.
He heard Morgan break the surface again, splashing echoing up from above. Aaron pushed himself further, getting deeper and closer to the ground. His hands brushed sand and dirt and he jolted back when his fingers tangled in a slimy weed.
His chest was growing tight but despite this Aaron twirled around against the current and spread his arms, moving his hands in a wide area.
Aaron's chest was becoming painful but the thought of Spencer being submerged for so long encouraged Aaron and he kicked against the ground and reached out in front of him.
Aaron felt something that wasn't weeds or sand and he wrapped his hand around it, realising quickly that it was some kind of clothing.
His lungs were bursting. He couldn't feel around without another breath, so with his hand tightly gripped around the cloth, Aaron kicked up, pushing for the surface.
When he broke he gasped, pulling in as much air as he could, trying not to pass out. He sucked in a long breath through his nose and pulled up the cloth in his fist.
He felt a body as he pulled and he quickly grabbed at the head, forcing it up out of the water. Aaron went weak when he saw Spencer's hair and face and he could have cried from relief. He grabbed Spencer under his armpits and hoisted him as far out of the water as he could muster.
Morgan broke the surface, taking a deep breath and preparing to go under again when Aaron yelled out to him.
"Morgan!"
Derek turned sharply and he saw Aaron struggling with a body, trying to keep its head out of the water while successfully submerging himself.
Morgan shot through the water, closing the space between himself and the body and letting out a long breath of relief when he saw it was Spencer. He soon retracted his breath when he saw the young-man's eyes were closed and his lips were blue.
"Crap."
Morgan pushed Spencer's torso up, kicking his legs through the water to keep them both up while Aaron moved backwards, holding Spencer's face from the water.
"Is... is he breathing?" Morgan asked, spitting out water as it kept hitting his face and infiltrating his mouth.
"I don't know... I-I don't know."
Aaron pushed backwards, desperate to get Spencer to the shore.
"His pulse," Morgan said, reaching up to reach Spencer's neck.
"Get him to the shore first."
Morgan glanced over Aaron's shoulder and he nodded. "It's not far."
They both picked up speed, trying to swim, keep themselves up and Spencer between them.
Emily ran out to meet them, getting knee deep and grabbing Aaron's arm, lifting him up.
Aaron realised the ground was under him again and he stood, heaving Spencer with him as Morgan found his own feet.
"Hurry," Morgan said, spitting into the water as he picked up Spencer's legs. He winced when he saw the damage done to the one.
"Is he breathing?"
"I don't know, Emily. Move, quick," Aaron said, hoisting his unconscious brother under the armpits and moving up to flat ground.
They lay Spencer down carefully and Aaron quickly knelt beside his chest, pressing his ear to it and listening as his own heart pounded. Morgan watched with wide eyes, water dripping off both of their faces.
Aaron sat up and swallowed thickly, shaking his head as he did.
A cry broke out from JJ as she fell down beside Spencer. Rossi was still staring at the boat.
"CPR!" Morgan yelled, nearly shoving Aaron out of the way to do it himself. Aaron quickly moved his hands over Spencer's heart and he started to press rhythmically against the still chest.
"Police are here," Emily mumbled and she glanced back at the squad cars joining them.
"Ambulance?" Morgan asked breathlessly and Emily stepped back and craned her neck. They waited with the painful sounds of Aaron's palms shoving hard into Spencer's chest before Emily joined them again, nodding eagerly.
"I see them," she mumbled. She looked down at Spencer as Aaron paused to listen to his chest again. "He's not breathing is he?" she asked but nobody wanted to answer.
JJ held Spencer's arm, rubbing at the cold skin, trying to force her own life back into it.
"Spence?" she mumbled and her voice hitched. She looked up at Aaron with wide, desperate eyes. "Oh god, help him! Hotch help him!"
"I'm trying. Come on, Spencer. Come on!" Aaron pumped his hands against Spencer's chest harder. Hot tears peppered his eyes, mixing with the fresh lake water dripping down his forehead. Aaron stopped and pressed his ear to Spencer's chest.
He sat back up and started to pump Spencer's chest, harder this time, trying to dredge up a heartbeat.
"Hotch, hold on."
Hotch pressed twice more and sat back, breathing heavily while Morgan leaned over Spencer. He pinched his nose and held his chin before blowing air into his limp mouth. He drew back before pressing forward again. Spencer didn't respond and Morgan fell back to let Aaron resume chest compressions.
Aaron didn't miss the way Morgan rubbed at both his eyes.
"Come on, Spencer," Aaron muttered, his nails digging into his knuckles as he pushing the heels of his palms down between Spencer's ribs. "Please, Myles, please, come on."
Aaron's voice shook and he sat back and let Morgan administer mouth-to-mouth.
Emily jumped to the side as paramedics stormed across the shore, hurrying with bags and a backboard toward their fallen agent.
"Come on, Reid!" Morgan yelled before he blew another breath into Spencer, whose chest lifted.
Morgan sat back again, watching Spencer's chest fall as Aaron placed his hands over it. Only, this time, Spencer's chest rose again and his body convulsed, his back arching up off the floor.
"Give us room!"
Morgan fell back more, nearly rolling into the water when the paramedics pushed him out of the way, doing the same to Aaron while helping to turn Spencer onto his side.
Morgan heard the young-man cough and gag, before drawing in a tortured breath.
Morgan got to his feet, Aaron had done the same and was trying to push between the paramedics.
"Is he conscious?" Aaron leaned over and saw a glimpse of Spencer's pale face, his eyelids fluttering.
"-intubate. Oxygen count severely low- sir, you need to step back!"
Aaron stood up and watched the EMTs rush his little brother into the ambulance.
"He'll be okay." Aaron looked slowly away from the ambulance. He saw Emily smiling weakly back at him. Emily nodded. "He'll be okay."
Aaron turned around again until he was facing the lake. A small rescue boat had been backed up into the water and four officers and two lifeguards were getting in.
"Dad," Aaron muttered as he looked out to the boat floating further and further from the shore.
Thanks for reading.
I'm so close to finishing university and then hopefully chapters will get longer and more stories can come out.
I'm excited for it all.
Stay safe, have fun and I'll see you on Friday.
