Nico frowned as he walked away from the Apollo cabin.

He liked Will, kinda. Will was pretty, he didn't mind that Nico radiated death, he let Nico hang around and smiled at him.

Nico did like that, he didn't get that before. He wasn't used to that kindness (not since he messed things up with Percy).

They were sorta dating now? Nico thought at least. He'd never dated before, but it seemed to match what he thought dating was. He'd never really talked about dating with others before. But Will called him his boyfriend so that meant they were dating, right?

He did kinda wish Will had talked to him about the dating thing.

And he wished Will would stop saying everyone liked Nico.

It wasn't that Nico wasn't glad people seemed to like him now, but it was… weird.

They didn't like him before, but suddenly a lot of them were a lot nicer. And he'd seen some talking to Will in ways that made him a bit uncomfortable.

Will assured him they were just happy for the two of them.

If Nico was stronger right then he might've tried to figure out what was up, but he was still exhausted from all the shadow traveling. He got tired easily and had fallen asleep in several places around camp over the last few weeks.

He just wasn't sure everything was… right.

But he didn't have experience in relationships, Will was older so maybe he knew what was up more? Nico wasn't sure. It was a bit uncomfortable. But Will was nice, and it was nice to have someone. Clearly the camp was accepting of their relationship, it helped sooth some of the fears he'd had when it came to being gay.

Nico shook his head, he was probably overthinking this.

Surely Chiron would say something if something were wrong, right?

"Nico! What have I told you? You can't use your powers, doctor's orders."

Nico bit back a scowl. Will was just trying to take care of him, just trying to make sure he was safe and healthy. But he'd just been trying to practice, how was he to raise his skills up again if Will didn't let him practice?

"Nico are you listening to me? Get rid of the skeleton!"

Nico sent the little mouse skeleton away and let Will brush him over.

"Come on, bed rest, at least a full day."

Will pulled Nico along to the infirmary, ignoring Nico's insistence that he didn't need it.

Will was his doctor though, right? This was what he was supposed to do?

Nico relaxed in the forest, sitting next to Mrs. O'Leary. He'd spent the last week relaxing away from everyone else. He used all the tricks he'd learned when on his own to stay in the forest and take some time for himself.

It was nice to finally have some him time. The camp was nice, but it was busy. He kinda wanted to go back to the underworld, or maybe to see Hazel. He missed her. He'd have to see when she had free time.

He needed this break though. He told the others (that cared that he didn't feel super awkward talking to) that he was gonna take some time to himself, so it was fine to disappear for a bit.

Maybe when he visited Hazel he could see Reyna too! He kinda wanted to check on her.

Yeah, he'd have to plan a visit.

"Nico! There you are. Where have you been?"

Nico blinked, turning to Will while on the way to the dining pavilion.

"I was taking some time to myself? Like I said?"

"I thought you just meant a day or two! You haven't come to see me in a week." Will gave him an annoyed look. "You can't just do that."

"I needed some time to myself-"

"Are you still going on about the people in camp not liking you?" Will snapped. "I thought you were past that nonsense."

Nico frowned, "I-"

"Come on, you'll sit with me at dinner tonight, doctor's orders."

"But I have a table, that's not allowed."

"Chiron won't fight with me on it if I say it's for your health, come on."

Nico was relieved when Annabeth said she needed to send some stuff to Camp Jupiter. Will had been trying to crack down on his "unhealthy habits" and he really needed a breather.

It was very uncomfortable to talk about his health issues with his sorta boyfriend. But Will was his doctor so that's what he was supposed to do.

But regardless, he took the opportunity that Annabeth gave him and agreed to bring the stuff to Camp Jupiter.

She gave him the two boxes with the stuff, double checked with him that he was good with doing it, then gave him some denarii to "buy a snack when you arrive, oh and say hi to Frank and Hazel for Percy, would you? Take your time getting back too-"

Nico ended up having to interrupt her and assure her he'd be fine to get her to stop, but it was a lot more comfortable than the way. She stopped when he asked her too and asked if she could give him a hug and then sent him on his way without bugging him about his health.

It was nice.

So, he waved goodbye then shadow traveled away.

Seeing Hazel again was really nice. He'd missed her.

They stopped to get lunch, got some smoothies, and then went to one of the gardens to sit and chat.

Hazel told him about her being promoted to centurion, about how Frank was doing (and he remembered to pass along the hello like Annabeth asked), and about Arion. She told him about her favorite places and how she fixed up the Pluto temple.

Apparently, they were trying to find a new Augur but Octavian was the best around in a long time so no one they evaluated was anywhere near his level.

Nico relaxed as they talked, slowly sharing things about what had happened. Apparently her and Frank were doing well. Frank could be really shy at times but he was sweet and always took her thoughts into consideration.

"Do you guys go on dates?"

She laughed, "Not really actually. We've gotten lunch together a few times, but most we really do is hold hands when walking.

Nico blinked, "Oh, that's nice though. You two are cute together."

Hazel grinned at him, "So, I heard a rumor you had a boyfriend?"

Nico winced.

"What's the matter?" she leaned forward. "Was that not true? Or did you break up? I'm sorry-"

"No, it's fine… just… idk… he can be difficult?"

Hazel chewed her lip, "Difficult how?"

"He's my doctor, right? And he keeps trying to make sure I'm healthy and all but it feels like he doesn't listen to what I want with things. Like- he won't let me use my powers at all, coming here meant sneaking behind his back to do the thing for Annabeth and yeah I'm like- super tired, but it's worth it! And how am I supposed to get better if I don't practice?"

Hazel nodded, "Practicing is good as long as you don't overdo it."

"Exactly! And like, he keeps talking about how I need to listen to him cause he's my doctor and I dunno, I just don't wanna do the stuff he says because I don't agree. And it's my life and health, shouldn't my decisions be factored in?"

Hazel nodded, "I think so, it's your body."

"And he keeps saying that everyone at camp likes me and like- that I imagined them having issues with me but-"

"You definitely didn't, I know people at camp were uncomfortable with you, they were and kinda are with me too."

"Yeah! Like- like just because they're suddenly nicer-"

"It doesn't mean that they always were."

"And it's frustrating!" Nico let out a breath. "It's so frustrating how they act like nothing was ever wrong, like they never treated me as different. It's almost like it never happened but it did and- and being told it didn't happen and that I made it up-"

Hazel hugged him, "I'm sorry, that sounds really frustrating. I'm not very experienced in relationships but that seems messed up. Maybe Percy or Annabeth could help? They have a good relationship and can probably say if something is wrong there."

Nico relaxed, hugging Hazel back.

"That's… a good idea. A second opinion would be good."

"If it makes you uncomfortable that's not good," Hazel agreed. "So you should definitely talk to someone. And if Will really likes you he'll take all this into consideration when you talk to him."

Nico nodded, "Right, thank you."

"Anytime," she murmured.

"Nico! You know you're not supposed to shadow travel, much less across the country twice. What do you think you were doing?"

Will was scowling at Nico, his hands on his hips.

Nico frowned, "I was doing an errand for Annabeth, and I'm perfectly healthy-"

"No you're not! You're sick, and you need rest. You can't just keep using your powers when you're in this state, you need to conserve your energy until you're recovered!"

"And when do you think I'll be recovered?" Nico snapped. "It's been weeks!"

"Maybe never if you keep ignoring my doctors orders!"

Nico bristled but Will continued on.

"You're going to have three days of bed-rest, then maybe you can do light walks around. But I'm keeping you under observation for a bit. You can't just risk your health like that."

"No."

Will frowned, "What do you mean no?"

"I mean no. I have stuff to do, I'm not just going on bed-rest because you say so. I'm feeling fine, just a bit tired. And I need to talk to Annabeth. So no I'm not going on bed-rest."

"Nico-" Will started.

But Nico didn't want to deal with him right then, he turned and walked away.

Nico hovered next to the office in the big house that Annabeth reserved for her big projects. He knew from her siblings she was here.

He wanted to talk to her, like Hazel suggested. It was far too awkward to talk to Percy about relationships when he'd told Percy he liked him just a few weeks ago.

So, Annabeth.

But first he had to knock on the door.

He scowled at himself, there was no reason for him to be so nervous. Well maybe a bit, he did have a crush on her boyfriend… that he was definitely totally over, yep.

He shook his head, knock, just knock on the door.

He knocked.

There was a brief scuffle, then "Come in!"

He pushed the door open, not about to let himself back out.

Annabeth's office was controlled chaos. Emphasis on the chaos.

There were blue prints and pictures covering the walls, and several boards placed around the room. The three tables crammed in there were covered in small models of buildings. Annabeth had a sketch pad in front of her and several notebooks spread out around her.

She glanced up distractedly.

"Oh, hey Nico. How was the delivery?"

He shuffled.

"It was fine, I dropped off the stuff and talked to Hazel a bit. I uh… she said I should ask you about some things."

Annabeth looked up from her sketch again.

"Oh? What is it."

He chewed his lip.

"So uh, you know how me and Will are like… kind of dating?"

Annabeth nodded, "Sorta? I've heard about it but wasn't sure."

"Right well, it's true… I guess. We never actually talked about it but he calls me his boyfriend and all…"

Nico shook his head. "So yeah, anyways… some things he does have been making me uncomfortable so like- I was wondering if you could give me some advice?"

Annabeth nodded, "Yeah sure, what's up?"

Nico took a deep breath and began explaining.

He talked about all the medical stuff Will was insisting on, all the things he'd talked to Hazel about, and then the little things. The way Will tended to drag him around when Nico didn't agree with stuff. How he acted like Nico couldn't take care of himself. How he seemed to want to know what Nico was doing all the time. How he was his doctor and all. How Nico was new to relationships and Will was a few years older so surely knew how this worked but still Nico was uncomfortable.

Annabeth listened silently, a frown on her face.

"Okay hang on, he's a few years older? I thought you were 14 and he's 15- no wait you were 12 last year right? That means you're 13 now- How did I mix that up? Sorry. Okay yeah no, that's… that's kinda a big age gap at your age. If you were 14 then maybe it'd be fine but at 13? And you say he's acting as your doctor? I'm- I don't think that's ethically allowed."

She paused reaching for her bag then stopped. "Right, no laptop… well uh, give me a bit and I can look into that?"

Nico nodded, relaxing at her words.

"But yeah the other stuff? The dragging and things… Percy and I have mock fights and arguments at times but if we really upset the other we always try to make-up, and we certainly stop if things we do upset the other on accident… I don't like that he's not respecting your wishes."

Nico nodded, "Yeah, I have said I don't like it…"

"And anyways, even as your doctor- my dad spent a bit going over what to look for in a doctor and what are red flags and the stuff he's doing even as your doctor are kinda red flags. He shouldn't be ignoring what you want in your recovery, and him just ordering you around instead of discussing your medical options is really yikes… I'm not sure why Chiron is allowing that…"

"Oh… I didn't know doctor's were supposed to act certain ways."

"Yeah there's a whole like, ethical guidelines thing for it. And Chiron is the one to approve who works in the infirmary so the guidelines should be covered by it… Hang on, let me see if I can find the guidelines for you. And I can put together stuff for you about all of this-"

"So… this relationship… it's not okay?"

Annabeth hesitated, "It… no… I'd say it's really not. I wish I'd realized this was going on, I'm sorry I missed it. And… I'll talk to Chiron and Mr. D about the doctor/patient stuff and Will ignoring the doctor guidelines and stuff. They shouldn't be allowing it."

"Nico took a deep breath, "Should I break up with Will?"

Annabeth studied him, "I… I don't think it's my place to tell you what to do. But you're asking for my advice so…."

She fingered the paper in her hand.

"If I were you in that situation I would break up with him. As your friend, or I hope I'm your friend, I'm not happy about how you're being treated in this relationship. But… it's your relationship so I can't tell you what to do with it."

Nico nodded, "Okay, thank you. I'll uh, I'll take that info you mentioned."

He wasn't sure exactly what to do, but it did help to know he wasn't imagining the issues.

He'd been avoiding Will for the last week, trying to think about the issue. The sources talking about doctor ethics showed several things Will had done wrong with him, and the list of red flags Annabeth got her dad to list out had even more.

He was beginning to realize that… their relationship was really not good. Especially with Will acting as his doctor still.

He needed to figure out if it could be salvaged, he didn't want to just break up, right? That wouldn't feel right. Will was the first one to reach out-

Well, really Percy was. But Nico messed up with Percy so… that didn't really matter anymore.

Did Nico want to give up one of the only people that cared? He had Annabeth but he always felt a bit awkward with her, she was his crush's girlfriend (his ex-crush he meant).

He really needed time to think on this.

OO OO OO OO OO OO

"Nico di Angelo!" Will snapped, stalking up to Nico. "Where have you been? You haven't come by since you got back, after you refused bedrest. Why haven't you visited? Don't you know I wanted to see you?"

Nico stepped back, frowning.

He… he didn't like that.

He didn't like being yelled at every time he did, or didn't do, something Will didn't like.

He thought of Annabeth and Percy, who had their rough patches but clearly cared for each other and worked through things.

He thought of Jason and Piper, who were trying to build their relationship and communicate and figure things out despite all the mess that led to their relationship.

He thought of Frank and Hazel who were "dating" but just… close and friends and clearly nice and sweet to each other.

He didn't like this.

He didn't like how Will treated him.

He didn't like feeling stressed with Will and avoiding him to do what he wanted to do.

This relationship didn't feel like the others did, even from the outside.

When Percy and Annabeth fought they apologized quickly. They always tried to avoid hurting the other. Even if Nico didn't think he'd be as comfortable with the casual fights they did, he knew that they were both happy with it.

And Jason and Piper were putting so much effort into making their relationship work, even if it didn't Nico knew that they cared for and respected each other.

He didn't like this relationship. He didn't like being treated like a child. He didn't like the way Will was acting like he should be the boss of Nico.

Nico just plain did not like dating Will.

They'd just met anyways. Nico barely knew Will.

And Will certainly didn't know Nico.

Maybe Nico had let things go too fast. He certainly had things get too far with Will.

Will didn't respect him, hadn't from the start. He was pretty, he was gay, and he wasn't very nice.

Nico didn't want this anymore.

He took a deep breath, "This isn't working out. Thanks for dating me for a bit I guess, but… I don't like you."

Nico turned, and shadow traveled away, leaving Will gaping behind him.
