Chapter 3.
Heart to Heart.
A few hours later…
Amy sat where Sonic was sitting at earlier when they had come to visit Tails. Everyone else had left about three hours ago, and Sonic with them. They had left to get something to eat, considering that Sonic had never left the hospital, he had stayed with Tails all night long, and now, he was finally able to leave without having the poor fox freak out. Currently Amy was stroking the bangs on the little fox's forehead. Tails was currently unconscious. The kid kept fading in and out of consciousness, Doctor Ram had told them that this was going to happen to the kid, considering that Tails was extremely exhausted and worn out because he was holding on to dear life with just barely any strength left. It was a miracle that Tails was even able to wake and talk with his friends and family, even if it was just for a little bit every now and then. Amy was in tears as she kept looking down at the face before her eyes. And that face belonged to none other than Tails. The young fox was extremely lucky, or more like, blessed to even be alive. From what Kim had told them, the laser should of killed him on the spot. Amy leaned in close and gave the fox a small hug and whispered something into his ear. Then she pulled herself away and leaned herself back in the chair, then she buried her head into her hands and wept. As she wept, she heard a soft mummer. Amy lifted her face from her head and glanced at the fox, then gasped with joy. Tails' ears twitched as he mummered. Then the fox barely lifted his eyelids, and rolled his head on the pillow until he was face to face with Amy. Amy immediately caressed Tails' face, causing him to smile. She was just overjoyed that Tails was awake again, even if it meant that they talked with each other for a minute or two, she was fine with that as long as Tails was doing his best to survive. Tails weakly placed a hand in Amy's other one, then he slowly opened his eyes halfway.
"You're… a good… friend…" Tails whispered.
Amy wiped a tear from her face. "Thanks… I guess."
Tails squeezed Amy's hand. "No… y-you… really.. are…."
Amy watched as Tails suddenly straightened his head on the pillow and closed his eyes.
"Tails? You okay?" Amy asked him.
Tails didn't respond.
"Tails?"
The kid was silent. Amy suddenly placed a hand on his forehead and stroked his three bangs. Tails slowly opened his eyes again. A tear escaped one eye and rolled down the length of his muzzle.
"You're okay Tails." Amy reassured the injured fox kit.
Tails had another tear roll down his muzzle.
"Amy…?" Tails choked.
"What?" Amy asked.
Tails was now in tears hysterically. "You're… n-not… mad at… m-m-me…? A-are… y-y-you…?"
"For what?" The hedgehog said.
Tails was now breathing heavily. "For… stalling… us… back at… S-Senator Vaughn's… office?"
Amy immediately gulped hard, trying to hold back the tears.
"Tails, shut up. It's wasn't your fault that you got abducted alongside the Senator's daughter. And it definitely was not your fault that you got wounded, please don't beat yourself up for what happened to you, okay?"
Tails was relieved as he turned his head and looked at Amy.
"... thanks… A-Amy," he whispered.
Amy immediately touched foreheads with Tails. The young fox nuzzled hers weakly. Then she pulled herself away.
"You're… like a… s-sister… to me…" Tails said weakly, his voice barely audible.
Amy was in tears again, the words going straight into her heart. She never deserved to have Tails consider her his sister, especially about after all the times she was mean to him. But here he was, calling her his sister. Amy watched as Tails' chest rose and fell with each calm, shallow breath. The kid smiled at her. Suddenly, the fox's face grew rueful, causing Amy to flinch.
"A-A-Alex?" Tails choked.
Any smiled back.
"It's okay Tails, she's safe. She's home with her parents now."
Tails straightened his head on the pillow and closed his eyes, then the fox wept bitterly.
"T-thank… goodness…"
"Tails, it's okay. Don't cry." Amy whispered.
"I-I… just… want to… go… home… so badly." Tails wept.
Amy's face grew rueful. "I know. So do I, but you've got to get well soon. Then we'll go home."
Tails reopened his eyes and looked up at the ceiling. "I'm.. sorry.."
Amy immediately knew what the young fox was referring to, so she went into lecture mode.
"Tails, you stop that right now. This was not your fault. No one knew this was coming. Stop holding on to regret and shame, it's not your fault-"
"Yes it is my fault… I got kidnapped… then… I nearly… die… so this is… my fault.." Tails choked, his eyes closed in the process. Then he wept bitterly again.
Amy felt sorry for the little fox, but at the same time, she knew that she couldn't let him drown in his regret, shame and sorrow. So she did the only thing that she knew that would help him. She gave the fox another hug. Tails immediately stopped crying and embraced her. Then suddenly, Amy felt Tails slowly slip down out of her arms and onto the medical bed. Then she realized that the fox had closed his eyes and was now, once again, unconscious, or was he? Amy saw that Tails was smiling, then she heard him do something she never thought she would hear him do again; the little fox was laughing weakly. Another sign he was recovering. Even if it meant that he laughed weakly, Amy was glad to hear him laugh again. Tails slowly rolled his head on the pillow, then he slowly opened his eyes back up halfway. Amy smiled at him. The kid weakly laughed again. Amy then started caressing the kid's face again.
"Tails," Amy began. "I should of went into Senator Vaughn's office with you in the first place. Then maybe, just maybe, this wouldn't have had happened to you. I'm so sorry that I let you down."
Amy then started bawling. Tails immediately frowned and laid a hand on the hedgehog's shoulder.
"...A-Amy… y-you… didn't know… this was… coming…"
Amy unburied her head from her hands and looked at her young friend. The fox was smiling again.
"I-I'll be… fine.. and you'll… be fine…" Tails weakly reassured her.
Tails suddenly rolled his head on the pillow until it was straight, then the kid closed his eyes. Amy looked up at the heart monitor and saw that the spikes on the screen were slow but steady. On the low left corner of the screen, there were the numbers to the fox's blood pressure. It was, ironically, steady. How could Tails, after being badly injured, have his blood pressure under control? Amy looked at him and saw that the kit had that peaceful, calm look on his face again. Amy about teared up again. She suddenly felt Tails grab a hold of her hand. Amy then knew why; she saw tears streaming down the fox's face. She immediately placed a hand on his forehead and stroked the three locks of hair he had on his forehead. Tails opened his eyes and smiled weakly, tears still trickling down his face and muzzle. Amy didn't know why Tails was crying, but she was not going to let go of his hand until he stopped crying. Maybe, it was because he was extremely thankful to be alive? But then again, it could be for a million other reasons why. Tails suddenly tightened his grip around Amy's hand and wept uncontrollably, closing his sky-blue eyes.
"A-Amy…?" Tails whispered.
Amy leaned in closer. "Yes?"
Tails slightly turned his head and opened his eyes, staring into Amy's.
"I was… thinking about… you… w-when.. I… was.. d-dying b-b-back… there… and.. y-you're like a… s-sister to.. me… Amy.."
Tails smiled at her when he said her name. Then he slowly closed his eyes, straightening his head upon the pillow.
"I.. love… y-you.. s-sis…."
Amy watched as Tails' chest fell; for in that moment, the young fox drew out a breath of complete exhaustion. For a moment, Tails smiled big, his eyes flickering. Then they completely stopped flickering. Amy then felt the fox's hand slowly slip out of her hand and watched it as he let it fall to the bed limply. The young fox then stopped smiling and with a breath of pure exhaustion, he was completely knocked out cold. Tails had passed out, out of exhaustion. Amy watched in silence for the next few minutes as Tails' chest rose and fell with each breath of pure exhaustion. Each breath was shallow, but steady. Amy thought about calling Kim back into the room, but before she could, she placed a hand on the fox's chest and for a few moments, felt the kid's chest rise and fall with shallow, steady breaths. She could also feel Tails' heartbeat, the fox's heartbeats were steady. Amy then leaned in closer and whispered into his ear.
"And I love you little brother."
How's this for chapter 3? A brother/sister relationship between Tails and Amy? BTW, I would say that the two of them are definitely more like brother and sister, especially with the fact that Amy would be the big sister, whereas Tails is the little brother. If you like what was written down, please leave me a review, thank you so much.
