Another phone call! After the events of Iron Man 2, Clint is worried because Natasha isn't picking up her phone. Untill finally she does.
Chapter two
Why the hell is she not answering her phone!? Clint thinks to himself as he sits in front of his tv. The extra news feed is on. Showing the battle at the Stark Expo. He knows Natasha is there. The last image of the robots blowing themselves up was 2 hours ago. He tried calling her about a dozen times and she didn't answer once.
He knows how worried she was about going undercover. During the last few weeks they kept in close contact. Natasha assured him that it wasn't actually half bad. Pepper Potts was actually nice. It was Tony Stark whom she was ready to shoot a thousand times. The man has been insufferable. Even going as far as destroying half his own house at a ''party''.
'Come on, Nat', please pick up', he prays as he presses the call button for the thirteenth time. It just keeps ringing.
'It's Natasha, please leave a message', her voice sounds. He decides that this time he will leave her a message.
'Damn it!', he yells before he hears the beep, 'Tash, please call me. I need to know you're okay. I need to know you're safe. Please tell me you're coming home to me', he whispers before ending the call. His phone drops on the floor and he lets his head drop in his hands. Within a minute after he left the message his phone rings.
'Nat?' he says after it rang once.
'I'm okay, Clint', Natasha replies softly. He sighs with relief.
'Thank God', Clint ruffles his hair as he finally relaxes, 'where are you?'
'SHIELD safe house. Fury sent me here for tonight', she explains. Clint can hear the exhaustion in her voice. He can hear her walking around and even her movements sound slow.
'You really okay?' he asks just to make sure.
'Just really tired. Couple bruises here and there but nothing serious', she softly says. He smiles a little as he hears her turn off the tv and the ruffling noise in the phone suggests she's finally giving in to her exhaustion and lies down.
'So undercover mission is over?'
'Finally. Although in the end it was not so bad. After Stark finally got back to his senses he actually showed he's a good guy', she yawns at the end of her sentence, 'how are you doing?'
'Better now that I know you're safe. You really had me worried when you didn't pick up the phone', he says softly. He can feel the adrenaline start to fade and his own exhaustion setting in.
'I'm sorry', Natasha replies. He instantly feels guilty for bringing it up.
'Don't. You're okay, that's all that matters', they stay silent for a while. He closes his eyes and can picture her doing the same.
'Clint?'
'Yeah?'
'Will you stay on the phone for a while?' Clint can barely hear her. He knows how hard it is for her to ask.
'You know I will', he replies just as softly. Everytime she asks him or tells him something that will show her vulnerability he counts his lucky stars. Everytime it shows him how far they've come since he brought her into SHIELD.
'Thanks', he can hear her voice starting to slur and realises she's slowly falling asleep.
'I'd do anything for you', he whispers back. He keeps the volume of his voice to a whisper as he continues to softly talk to her, 'after things slow down over there, please come stay with us for a couple days? Laura and I love having you here. The kids do too. Not a day goes by where Lila doesn't ask when you'll come home again. That little girl loves you, Nat. We all do', he stops for a second to hear if she'll reply. She doesn't. It's still no reason for him to hang up right away. 'I love you, Natasha. You're my family, my best friend. I hope you realise how important you are to me. I wouldn't be half the man I am today if it wasn't for you. Hopefully you'll see one day what an amazing woman you are'. He sometimes does this. Confesses to her how he truly feels about her. If a stranger would hear this they probably would think that it's a love confession. But they both know it's not. Laura knows it's not. Nothing about Clint and Natasha is romantic, it goes so much deeper than that. There's an unbreakable bond there. A trust so deep, not many people are lucky to find that in their lives.
Clint takes the phone away from his ear to see the time. They've been on the phone for nearly an hour.
'Sweet dreams, Nat. I love you', he says before hanging up the phone. He stares at his phone for a while, thinking about his best friend and how much he misses her right now.
Ideas anyone?
