A/N: Hello people! I have had this fic written since December 2020, and it's finally time to share it, I hope you like it!
Set immediately after 9x10
Harvey comes out of his office for the last time and every step he gives is charged with emotions, which he is trying to control, but he is not succeeding and he realizes that he is an idiot for trying it, that damn habit.
It's ok if he has some tears in his eyes and his body is full of sensations, he has been there for more than a decade, of course, leaving this building is going to make him feel a thousand emotions that he may not even be able to discern, even if he is really happy now, the most important chapter of his life so far is ending. He is sure he will always feel that place as his home.
He thinks that a few years ago, he would have been completely ashamed of what he feels, but he is glad that Harvey Specter is no longer the man who fights against his emotions and buries them 100 miles underground.
He turns his head toward his office one more time, and then to Donna's old desk and also to her COO office, closes his eyes for a moment, and sighs, letting himself flood for her, encouraging himself to be the man she taught him to be.
He feels his knees shake a little bit, it's a very big change and it's hard to get out of there, but he knows it's the right decision and continues walking to the hall, takes a breath of air when the elevator stops and walks inside to go down.
As he watches the number of floors decrease, he thinks that it had been many years in that building, a lot of effort, a lot of work, anger, happiness, a lot of scotch too, Donna was about to go to prison, he was about to go to prison, Mike effectively in prison, Jessica giving up everything for them, he became friends with Louis… Even there Donna had told him that her dad had passed away... So many good and bad moments with the people who had become his family.
He knows he came here as a wounded child and that the people here changed him.
He learned a lot about himself in these offices, even encouraging himself to face his most hidden demons. Now he feels lighter, and something he never thought he could feel: he feels happy and free.
And yes, everyone there was important, but he knows that none of this would have happened without Donna's love, help, and unconditional support.
The elevator door opens and he walks, trying not to think too much more because he doesn't want to stop anymore, he just wants to come home and hug his wife.
"Excuse me, Mr. Specter. You're not going to leave his wife here alone. Right?" Donna says, behind him, putting her palm between his shoulder blades and rubbing his back with her hand.
Harvey turns around, smiling at her. Her hand stays on his neck. "I was thinking about you… About us." Donna grins. "I thought you were already gone, and I just wanted to come home with you." He pauses for a few seconds and puts his hand on her elbow, stroking her skin with his thumb.
She smiles, staring at him. "We get here together, we go together too." She whispers, lowering her hand by his arm and holding his hand. "I'll follow you to the ends of the Earth. Remember?" Harvey nods, smiling sideways. Donna intertwines her fingers with her husband's and kisses his hand as he smiles.
Harvey stares at her for a few seconds, moving his thumb in her hand and Donna looks at him smiling, their eyes wet with tears of joy.
"What?" She mutters, squeezing his hand.
Harvey grabs her by her cheek with his free hand, brings his face closer to hers, and gently posing his forehead against hers. "I came here being a very different man... I wouldn't be who I am now if it wasn't for you, Donna." He murmurs, with a tearful voice.
"You did it, Harvey." She whispers completely honest and brings her hand to his biceps, trying to give him a little more support.
"You helped me a little bit…" He says, moving slightly his head to the side and looking into her eyes again.
"I helped you a lot.." She chuckles and squeezes his hand.
"It's true." He raises their hands and kisses her wedding ring.
"But this is how life works, we help the people we care about. And I would do it all over again. I'm also a different woman now."
He sighs. "We both are so different now… I can't believe we're getting out of here as husband and wife." He grins.
"You did it, you took the jackpot." She says and winks at him.
"Are you referring to getting my name on the wall?"
She rolls her eyes and comes even closer to him, whispering on his lips. "I mean, being able to get this woman against the wall." She adds pointing to her torso with her hand and brings his body closer to hers, pushing him with her hand on his back.
Harvey smiles suggestively and hugs her by the waist, bringing her even closer to him, she puts her hands on his nape, playing with his short hair. "You like it when I take you against the wall, don't you?" He asks in her ear and she feels her body tremble, why can this man provoke so much within her with just a few words?
"Do I really have to tell you?" She raises her eyebrow.
"Mmmm... Not really."
"Good." She responds.
"That doesn't mean I'm not the happiest man on earth for making you my wife and being able to put you against the wall whenever I want."
"Wife… Huh?"
"I still cannot believe it." He says again.
She grins. "Neither do I… But I must admit that being Harvey Specter's wife is making me the happiest woman on earth."
"I can't believe it." "It doesn't seem real." "We're really married." and saying "husband" and "wife" all the time is something that hasn't stopped happening since they exchanged their rings and are effectively married. It's because it feels unreal.
Since Harvey received the ring from his mother who knew it with certainty, he did know it before (and not these last weeks, maybe since the day he met her), but he really knew it was the time. As he told her, he didn't want to waste any more time. He carried that ring with himself for days, until he find the perfect moment. He never thought he was going to do it that way, in the middle of another wedding, but he still felt right.
Harvey will forever keep in his mind, as one of his most precious treasures, Donna's expression when he was proposed to her, because make Donna Paulsen surprised isn't a simple task, and he accomplished it. (and yes, he is proud of himself for that)
Donna also didn't believe that this was going to happen this way, but she knows Harvey so long ago, that she knows that things with him will never be as they are supposed to be... They took more than 15 years to get here and anyway, she also would have married him under a New York bridge without a fancy dress and without make-up. She knows she's always loved him, and marrying him feels like the right thing to do, no matter where, when, or how.
They have already passed through all the tests enough to be sure that this will be forever and not that they need to show anything to anyone, maybe they will be making a wedding again for all their family and friends, maybe not... Now they just care about being together and discover this new life as husband and wife on the other side of the country.
Harver smirks and gives her a short kiss on her lips. "You know… I really hope that our married home has strong walls and furniture."
Donna laughs. "So many years of waiting that you couldn't wait to take me to bed."
He raises his eyebrow. "I also did that afterward."
She smirks. "I know, and it's no reproach. I already told you, it was worth the wait. Even if our second first time was against the wall and on a piece of furniture, without even taking our clothes off." They both smile suggestively at each other, remembering as that second first night they were not able to endure another second to be able to feel again, after so many years of waiting. "I hope we put every wall, furniture, and corner of our new home to a very good use," Donna whispers and looks for his lips to kiss him, she needs to make him feel how much she loves him, and Harvey responds to the kiss immediately, because he also needs to make her feel how much he loves her.
They separate themselves needing to recover some oxygen, but their bodies remain stuck to each other, Donna scratches gently with her fingertips between Harvey's shoulder blades, and he circles his thumbs into the bones of her waist. They are staring at each other and they realize that making jokes about all the waiting they had to endure, the furniture, and everything else is fun... But nothing is a joke anymore, nothing is a hint or a disguised flirtation. Everything is real.
They aren't saying it in words, but it is what they are thinking and feeling at that moment, the weight that they are actually and finally husband and wife. And they don't have to say it, it's enough to stare into each other's eyes to understand it. That's how it's always been, it was always enough with a look.
Donna slowly lowers her gaze to her husband's lips and he smirks proudly, she giggles softly at his expression and erases his smile by capturing his lower lip among hers, Harvey responds in a thousandth of a second and could pass Louis shouting to his cat on the phone or Mike making jokes about them finally together, that neither of them would hear, were too immersed in that kiss. They remember more than one situation in each place in that hall, the elevators and the 50th floor where they wished they were doing this, and it's finally real.
Suddenly, Harvey surprises her by lifting her up a little from the ground, and he starts to spin her, she laughs and holds on to him, looking not to fall.
"Harvey! We're in the office!" She laughs.
"We're alone!" He says without stopping spinning.
"I'm getting dizzy!" She says, holding on to his neck and hiding his face there.
"Ok." Harvey stops and leaves her on the ground. "But, I really like the way you laugh."
Donna smiles, staring at him tenderly as Harvey puts her hair behind her ears. "You're definitely not the same man who came in here with his girl Friday."
Harvey chuckles. "No, I am not." He smiles and gives her a short kiss. "You know… There are 2 things we did a lot here, drink scotch while we listened to my vinyls and make fun of Louis." They giggle. "Well…" He lowers his voice tone. "And a third one, we fell in love."
"Mhm… I thought that had happened before, you know, strawberries and whipped cream."
He smirks. "Well, you're right."
"Anyway… We had a great time here, sometimes it was hard, but I think that it was worth it, and we are definitely in love." She kisses him. "Ready for a new adventure?"
"Yes, I'm ready." He says holding her hand. "Ray is here?"
"No, he isn't."
"I thought he'd be waiting for us."
"I told him to leave. I thought we could walk through New York night together... And maybe go to celebrate."
"What are you thinking about?"
Donna shrugs. "Go?"
He smirks. "Yes." They squeeze their hands and go out of the building together.
Once in the street, they stop for a few seconds, looking up. Donna takes Harvey by his biceps with her two hands, stroking him with her thumbs and supports her head on his shoulder.
He sighs. "Where are we going?" Harvey asks with his lips on her hair.
"Let's just walk for a while, Harvey." She responds and he kisses her head. They start walking together just a few steps, but Harvey stops again. "What?" Donna asks.
"Nothing. I just want to be there for a few more minutes."
"It's ok, Harvey."
Donna takes his hand between her two hands, puts her head again on his shoulder and Harvey looks up at the building one more time.
His life had changed forever, and he could not be more proud of himself. He walks by the hand with the woman he had always loved, now his wife. Wow, that is insane.
He spent many years denying himself the possibility of being happy, but she was always there, waiting for him. It was true when he told her it was everything because of her.
He strokes her hair with his nose and inhales her smell, filling his body with her. He is the man he is because of that woman. He has no doubt about that.
He remembers every moment with her, outside and inside the building. The good times and the bad ones. Despite everything, she always comes back to him, and he is so grateful for her waiting, for her patience, for her unconditional love.
Harvey lets go of her hands and hugs her by her shoulders, Donna hugs him by his waist and kisses his cheek.
"What are you thinking about?" Donna whispers in his ear.
"How amazing you are."
She smiles, surprised. "What?"
"Exactly, this."
"And… Why?"
"Because you're," Harvey responds with a smile, taking her by the waist and making her stand in front of him.
She smirks and rests her wrists on his shoulders. "Explain yourself in a better way, please."
He takes a deep breath. "I was thinking about that, everything that happened, what I just told you… Your unconditional love changed me forever Donna. With my story and my flaws, you made me believe in love…"
"I told you, that was your lucky day." She says, funny.
He smiles. "It really was, but... Stop. I appreciate you making funny comments when we go into emotional conversations. I guess you do it because you know I'm a little uncomfortable." She nods. "But, I want you to know this and never forget it: your unconditional love changed me and everything forever, Donna"
"I just did what I felt, Harvey." She murmurs, with her lower lip shaking and trying to avoid tears.
"You've always stayed there." He responds to her and gently squeezes her waist with his hands.
"It's how I felt and what I wanted to do. It's what I feel and what I want to do now too. Being close to you, no matter what."
"I want the same thing."
"That's good because we're married, and we're about to cross the whole country together." She chuckles.
"I think it's a great plan."
"It is." She kisses him. "So… We could go have a Macallan 18 at the bar where we met to say goodbye to New York. You think that's a good plan, too?"
"It definitely is. But first, I need to do something else."
"What...?"
Harvey puts one of his hands on her neck and the other stays on her waist. He turns his body a little over hers and kisses her passionately. Donna takes him by his arms, looking for balance.
"This…"
"You know… Rumor has it that in addition to being the best closer in New York, you're the best kisser too." She winks at him.
"Mhm... We can call some people to confirm."
"I just need my opinion and in my opinion, you are." They both laugh and kiss again.
"I need to go get that drink," Harvey says.
"Yes, sir. You need to get out of this situation. You just offered your wife to call them, who knows how many women, you were with... You're playing with fire, Specter."
"Yes... you like to burn yourself."
"I like you to burn me."
"Is that an indecent proposal?"
"It is... For after our drink."
"Against your wall?"
She giggles. "Maybe…"
"Ok, time to walk again," Harvey says, walking faster and laughing.
Donna laughs too and runs until she reaches him and hugs him by his back, passing her arms around his neck. She rests her hands on his chest and Harvey takes them, moving his thumbs on her skin.
"I love you, Harvey." She murmurs and kisses him behind his ear.
"I love you too, always," Harvey responds and kisses her hands.
They just keep walking, hugging like this. Heading for their new life.
A/N: I always thought this happened like this and Donna would be waiting for him, so… Here it is! And Happy Darvey anniversary to everyone!
And as always, sorry for my mistakes in English x)
