(A/N): As if my brain went 'don't do work, write another fluffy oneshot'. My brain needs to get its priorities sorted. Anyway, this is based off the song Ours by Taylor Swift. I don't own silent witness. Read on and enjoy.
Ours
Nikki stepped into the lift, nodding at the people she recognised in there. A few smiled back at her, also nodding, whilst a couple stared outright at her. She fought the urge to roll her eyes. If Jack was there with her, she knew they'd be laughing together over the idiocy of people and their judgements. Nikki knew why they were staring at her, of course she did, but she couldn't bring herself to care about their reactions. Most people were happy for her, for them. After many, many years of bottling up feelings and settling for being friends on both sides, she and Jack had finally gotten together. Honestly, she'd always expected there to be a big, emotionally charged moment that sparked a fury of passion between them, but in reality, it had been quite simple.
"Hey Nikki?"
Nikki glanced up as Jack shuffled over to her side, looking quite sheepish and shy. "Jack?"
"I, uh, do you want to go to dinner with me?" He shifted nervously from foot to foot.
"Sure, pizza like usual?" She smiled at him, hoping to put him at ease.
Jack shook his head, looking even more nervous and shy. "No, I uh… oh christ, this was much easier in my head. Nikki…"
He was cut off as Nikki pressed her lips sweetly to his. It lasted barely a moment before she pulled back, a smile tugging at the corners of her mouth. "Yes, Jack, I would love to go to dinner with you."
From there, they'd found themselves in a relationship and despite worries on both sides, they'd never been happier. A couple of lab techs had found them kissing a few weeks after that initial date, and the news had spread like wildfire. Most were happy for the couple and outwardly told Nikki and Jack so, but there were a few who'd judged them on Jack's temper and her stubbornness, claiming they'd never work. Jack had felt guilty and worried unnecessarily about all that, but Nikki had shook her head gently at him.
"You'd never hurt me, Jack." She told him softly yet firmly, curled up on his lap as they both sat on the sofa in her living room, the television on low in the background. Jack's arms tightened round her gently and he pressed a kiss to her hair.
"You have way too much faith in me, Nikki."
"No, I have just enough faith in you." Nikki twisted in his arms until she was facing him, looking up at him with wide, loving eyes. "Jack, there will always be people that judge us, because they've nothing better to do with their lives. I chose you, I love you, Jack. That's enough."
"Nikki… I love you too." He titled her head up with a finger under her chin to press a kiss to her lips. "All I need is you."
She stepped off the lift on the floor to the Lyell, fumbling in her bag for her pass. Jack had been called out to a scene that required forensics but not a pathologist, which was why she was there on her own that morning. From the corner of her eye, she caught sight of the new receptionist leaving the lab in a huff, shooting her a dirty look on her way past. Nikki bit her lip to keep from laughing. Dana had been after Jack ever since she'd begun working there, and had made it clear she didn't think Nikki competition at all. It would have gotten to her, but Jack had already reassured her on that score when one of his former girlfriends had shown up trying to get him back.
Nikki's heart sunk as she took in Anna, stood way too close to Jack. Tall, well, taller than Nikki, brunette and beautiful. Nikki immediately felt the urge to hide, comparing herself and coming up short. To her surprise, Jack noticed her almost immediately and his whole face lit up, practically bounding over to her and wrapping his arms round her waist, lifting her easily into his embrace so her feet weren't even touching the floor. Anna huffed and left with a glare at the embracing pair.
Later, Jack brushed her hair gently from her face as they lay together in bed, her head on his chest. "There's no competition, you know."
"What?" She shifted to prop herself up on her elbow, staring at him with a furrowed brow.
"I saw you, earlier. Nikki, I promise, you are so much better than Anna. You are the most beautiful, dedicated, stubborn woman I've ever met." Jack's hand brushed her hair from her face again before coming to rest gently on the side of her neck, his thumb rubbing soothingly up and down her jawbone. "You're all I need, Nikki, just you. There's no one better than you and I don't want anyone else. I love you."
"I love you too." She snuggled back down onto his chest. "Anna's still more beautiful than me though."
"Nikki, stop. You're perfect exactly as you are. Stop worrying so much."
She let herself into the lab and smiled as she found Jack sat at his desk, looking at something or other on his computer screen, though he looked up immediately with her entrance. Nikki grinned, depositing her bag on her chair before approaching him and sitting herself on his lap, wrapping her arms round his neck as she pressed a loving kiss to his lips in greeting. Jack's arms wrapped round her waist in return, deepening the kiss. She could feel his hands on her waist, warm through her blouse. "Hey." She greeted breathlessly as she pulled her lips from his.
"Hey." Jack returned in much the same tone. "Ready for the day?"
"Of course." She smiled at him, both ignoring the lab tech walking past them with a badly concealed stare. People could judge all they liked; they didn't know them or their relationship. She loved Jack and he loved her. That was enough. "They're just jealous." She whispered in his ear.
"Of course." Jack smiled softly at her, pecking her nose lightly. "What we have is ours. They can all go to hell."
"Jack." Nikki shook her head in admonishment, though her smile ruined the effect somewhat. "I love you."
"I love you too."
