Winning her back was a bit easy. He should have known that.
What he knows for certain is, he didn't deserve things being that easy. He thinks he should work for her affection more and despite her agreeing immediately to try things out again, he swore he would make her feel special every minute of every day.
No slip ups this time.
Well, of course, she would have her passive aggressive moments that makes his head swirl in frustration, yet he finds himself loving every moment of it.
He's with Addison Adrianne Forbes Montgomery, previously -Shepherd. With her thousand names, going crazy from time to time naturally comes with the package.
They drove to his land. She was still clueless about what's going to happen, and she sure as hell did not let him forget that. A smile appeared on his face as he thought of what they were going about to do.
"So, did you find another place other than Joe's?" She asked him with a bite in her tone, making him shake his head in amusement.
She was still bitter about what happened during their second first date.
Addison loved the place he chose that night… yet the awe lasted after the first 30 minutes they were there. Because of the unbelievably comical coincidence featuring Mark and his own date, the night turned to an absolute disaster… well, at least before they got back to the hotel and Derek made up for Mark's date's mishaps.
Since then, Derek knows Addison firmly believes that whatever date he plans for them, it would end up horribly.
"No. I'm pretty sure this time, no one would throw a drink at you and Mark is nowhere near where we're going," Derek said, holding back a laugh because he knows Addison would immediately smack him if he does.
"Funny. You're a funny guy, Derek," She said monotonously. Derek didn't need to look at her to know that she was glaring at him.
"Are we heading to your trailer?" Addison asked suddenly, her voice a bit shrilly. He really hoped she wouldn't notice the route until they were already near enough.
"No…" He trailed off, suddenly steering the car to the left as he almost missed their turn.
"God damn it, Derek, slow down!" He laughed, his mind taking him a few years down their future, where he's sure their kid would complain about their mother being the worst backseat driver.
Someday. Soon. Hopefully.
"And, I'm pretty sure we're going to your trailer. Did you forget something there?" He packed the last of his things last week, moving to Addison's apartment just a few blocks away from the hospital. Of course, the land was still his, but logistics pointed to him moving to Addison's place for the meantime.
"Kinda. You'll see."
He glanced at her when she didn't say anything. She yawned with eyes closed, getting comfortable at her place in the passenger seat as they still have a good 10 minutes before they reach the trailer. Well, they did sleep for just four hours last night.
"We're he—oh no." Derek stared at Mark Sloan standing near his trailer, with Meredith Grey beside him.
He still suspects that they are dating, but they kept denying it.
He and Addison joined the bet going on in the hospital, though. By the looks of it, they would be having one date night sponsored by the doctors and nurses of Seattle Grace.
"I thought you said—"
"I thought so too."
When they got off the car, Mark greeted them halfway, winking at Derek.
"Grey here wants to see it too." Derek glared at Mark, annoyed that he's giving away his surprise. Well, barely, but it would help that Addison doesn't have a clue about anything at all.
"What's happening?"
"Oh, you'll see." Derek cringed as Meredith said his exact words back in the car.
A few months after his apology by the parking lot, Meredith started to treat him amicably… suspiciously around the same time she and Mark began to spend more time together.
"You two are the worst. And I would definitely say that in my best man speech at your wedding."
He smiled in satisfaction as the two balked, both faces red. The two stepped farther away from each other, making Derek and Addison share a knowing smile.
Oh, they are so going to earn tons from this. Yang's about to go down.
"So, Addison, you ready?" He asked, holding out a switch and head gears. Both Mark and Meredith wore their protective glasses and muffs. Derek helped Addison wear hers too, despite her confusion.
"This is gonna be the best date we would ever have," Derek said as the three of them led Addison farther from the trailer, close to where their cars were parked. "Plus points, it's a double date with the 'not' couple."
"Pushing it, Shep." Derek smirked, enjoying the satisfaction of making Mark Sloan uncomfortable. It has always been his favorite hobby. He couldn't believe he forgot how satisfying it is to tease Mark.
"I would hop into all this teasing had I not been wearing gears as if I would be shooting all of you," Addison quipped, adjusting her mufflers. "And I think you boys are forgetting I could score three bullseyes with my eyes closed."
Derek smirked when he remembered bringing Addison to the shooting range with Mark. The latter kept making comments about bringing a girl to the range. They were still getting to know each other and obviously, Mark doesn't warm up to girls immediately unless they are a potential one night stand.
"Trust me. I didn't forget," Mark grimaced, more likely remembering how Addison showed off her hidden skill, with the gun unfortunately a bit too close for comfort to Mark's face.
"And I will keep that in mind too," Meredith said. With the way her eyes went wide, Derek was sure the woman was thinking about the times they both pissed Addison with their affair.
They all faced the direction of the trailer—with Derek guiding a still confused Addison. The trailer seemingly has been reduced to half its size with how far they were.
Derek finally placed the switch on Addison's hand, making the woman jump slightly.
"What's this?" She wearily asked him, cautious eyes meeting his glinting ones.
"13th date's the charm! Press the button and you'll see," He said, looking at her widened eyes.
"No."
"C'mon, Addie! Don't be such a wuss. Press it!" Mark said and Derek knew it didn't help.
Or maybe it did?
Addison suddenly looked determined as she glared at Mark, then slammed the red button.
The sound of explosion rang through the land, making Addison jump and scream in surprise, letting go of the switch.
Meredith and Mark were shouting too, except in glee.
Derek laughed as he stared at Addison, the woman's eyes were so big as she watched Derek's beloved trailer explode into pieces.
"Trailer's all blown up!" Derek whispered, anticipating Addison's smile.
It was a dramatic move, and he was aware of it. Blowing the trailer up was unnecessary, but as it lingered inside his mind, the more he realized how much baggage it symbolized, baggage he's desperate to forget.
He didn't expect her to suddenly sob.
She removed her gears and walked away, halting Mark and Meredith's celebratory cheers.
Derek followed Addison immediately, worried she would slip with the dampness of the land, or catch herself with another case of poison ivy.
Just when he thought he knew her like the back of his hand, she would keep him in place and remind him how unpredictable she is.
"Addison, wait up!" He can see her still walking with her shoulders shaking. He doesn't understand what was going on, as he knew she was the one who suggested making the trailer explode.
Granted, that was almost a year ago… but still.
"Addie, what's wrong?" He asked softly as soon as he caught up with her.
"You're really asking me 'what's wrong'?!" The way she sounded, it seemed as if he should have understood immediately why she was crying. Yet, he can't, for the life of him, understand why the hell she was suddenly this sad about the trailer.
"You made me blow up the trailer into pieces!"
"But… isn't that what you want?" Derek asked, knowing full well he sounded dumb founded. He can't avoid it because he genuinely doesn't know what he did wrong, but he knows his obvious cluelessness would anger Addison even more.
"Metaphorically, Derek. What the hell's wrong with you? You really think I would want that?!" She gestured wildly in the direction of the trailer.
"Maybe back then, when I first got here… but now, we have memories there. Bad mostly, maybe, but… but…" She started crying once again, making Derek look at her helplessly.
"Addison…"
"We have memories of Doc there… some good memories of when we were working on our marriage…" She sniffed, and so he pulled her to a hug.
"Oh, Addie… blowing up the trailer was actually for me too. I… I wanted to get rid of it… If I had known it's that important to you, I wouldn't have done that, though, or made you—"
"You shouldn't have." Her voice was muffled as she buried her tear-stained face on his neck.
"I wanted to get rid of the trailer for my own peace of mind… and it's the easiest way to push through our plans, you know?" Addison pulled back from him, wiping away the tears Derek's shirt failed to catch.
"Plans?"
"Like, build our own house… our family… we wouldn't be able to do that if the trailer's there…" Derek smiled softly, rubbing small circles on her arms, trying to calm her trembling body.
"That's… nice…" He knew he was slowly selling the idea to her. He looked at her eyes, angry tears now replaced with happy ones. He softly wiped the rolling tear with his thumb, determined to make her smile.
"Just 'nice'? Well, imagine our kids would play in the backyard… then we would go fishing by the lake… you would scream and rant but would secretly love it because our kids certainly would… then we would have a huge space where the kids could run or maybe even build a treehouse for them… we could have free space to celebrate birthdays, or invite family over then leave them and hide anywhere in this huge land…"
"I love that…" She was now smiling, lost in the picture he was painting for her. "Not the fishing bit, but the rest… I want all of them."
"I figured." Derek smiled, pulling her body close again, leaning to kiss her. As she wrapped her arms around his neck and rested her forehead on his, he knew everything was finally falling back into place.
And she would breathe the life back into me, from every day until eternity.
