A few days after a boy became a stowaway with a couple; in Jasper pack three wolf pups were asking their mother a question.
"Hey Mom, can we go play outside the den," asked Runt the youngest pup of Kate and Humphrey.
"Ok guys, but be back at the den before sundown and be careful."
All three pups nodded to her and began their trek to the lake. The pups wanted to go out and play because their dad and aunt were with their dads friends log sledding and their mom was cleaning their den. They wanted to go to put of the den to try and entertain themselves. They always could find something entertaining to do wether it be playing hide and seek, investigating new smells, or playing other pup- games. They were walking down their usual path when they stopped.
"Do you guys hear that?" Asked Stinky, the oldest. "Yeah normally we hear birds chirping or at least some noise but the forest seems quiet." Said Claudette the middle child.
They then heard a twig snap. They looked in the direction of the noise and they saw a glint of something in the bushes. All of a sudden everyone was entrapped by a net.
"Three in one sounds like a promotion dontcha think Clyde," said a voice out of the bush. Two humans came out of the bush and the other one spoke.
"The boss just said he wanted a purebred wolf pup alive. With three the pay will be triple Will."
The pups were terrified. The first man grabbed the net and began to walk with the pups in it.
"Help us, please someone help us," pleaded the pups but all the men heard were whimpering and yips from the pups.
"Be quiet all of you, you are going to be our bosses pets and get us a lotta money," Said Clyde. After he said that Clyde felt a sharp pain in the back of his head. He began to rub the sore spot and looked down to see a stone.
"Did you throw that Will," he asked. "What are you talking about. I didn't throw anything at you. You need a vacation; the forest is getting too you," Said Will. After he said that a stone struck him in the middle of his neck. He looked at Clyde with anger.
"What was that for, I said I didn't throw anything at you," hollered Will. Clyde looked at him confused.
"I took that answer. Why are you getting mad? I didn't do anything to y-."
A loud roar shot through the forest and interrupted the men's conversation.
"What was that," asked Will.
"I don't know but the sooner we get to the truck the sooner we can get out of here. Come on," said Will.
The forest was silent as the men made the trek through the forest. The men kept getting an uneasy feeling as if they were being watched. A twig snapped and they stopped.
"Show yourself," screamed Clyde.
He pulled out a pistol and aimed it at where he thought the twig snapped. The men looked around and listened but heard nothing. The silence was unnerving for the men. To make matters worse a mist started to envelope them. The mist grew thicker and thicker until the men could see only each other.
"I can't see anything Clyde," said Will.
Clyde kept his pistol bared and listened. They then began to see a person. This person was a boy. A boy with pale skin, dirty clothes, and he wore a black cloak. The strangest thing was that the boy wore a wooden wolf mask. He looked at them with a cold dead stare through the mask.
"Who are you," said Clyde aiming the pistol at the boy.
"I'm a spirit that protects this forest. Leave what you have stolen from here and you will leave here alive, however if you don't you will become a ghost like me."
The men were terrified at the ghosts words. Their fear rose more when a wolf and a mountain lion appeared by the boy.
"Run!" screamed Will.
They turned around and began running the opposite direction. The men were too preoccupied to realize that the spirit ran to the net that held the pups and cut it with a knife and they fell to the ground.
"Leave this place or suffer my wrath," echoed the ghost.
The men kept running not caring about the pups or there truck they just wanted to get away. The pups kept their eyes shut in fear of what the ghost would do to them. They opened them up once they heard... laughing? They opened their eyes and saw the fog going away but the ghost boy remained. Then everything went back to normal. The spirit turned his attention to the pups. He moved towards Runt, Stinky, and Claudette ,but the pups moved frantically away. The spirit stopped and began to walk away.
"you are all saved, I'll be on my way," Said the spirit.
The pups were speechless at what they just saw
"Runt, Stinky, Claudette, where are you," said a feminine voice.
"We are here mom," said Runt. Kate ran to the voice to find the pups.
"Pups I'm so glad you're ok. I heard that there were humans around and I wanted to make sure you guys were safe."
"We were captured, but then the spirit saved us," said Stinky.
"A spirit," asked Kate.
The pups turned around but saw that no one was there.
"He was right here, and he saved us," said Claudette.
"Why don't we head home and you guys can tell everyone your story. It's getting dark and we need to head home," said Kate.
They nodded and started walking with their mother. Kate was wondering who her pups were talking about and what exactly saved her pups.
The next day the sun had rose and shined into a cave. Inside this cave was a grey cloak, a duffle bag, two daggers, a wolf mask, a tiny box and a blonde haired boy ,about eight or so, who was waking up. The boy rose from his position and looked outside the cave and smiled.
"Beautiful morning," spoke the boy.
After he said that he looked through his bag and pulled out a tank top and shorts. He put one of his daggers in a sheath and put it in his pocket.
"I'll get breakfast after my walk," states the boy.
He walked out of the cave and began his trek. As he was walking he looked around the forest. He heard birds chirping, and the river flowing. He kept walking.
"This is a great morning nothing could ruin this."
A twig snapped.
"Me and my big mouth," stated the child.
He turned and heard growling. A red male wolf and a tawny brown she-wolf came out of the bush.
"Hi, Mr. and Ms. wolf I understand I have overstepped my bounds and will be on my way, so... Look! A caribou!" The boy pointed behind the wolves.
They turned to look and saw nothing there. They turned back to the boy and saw that he was gone. Meanwhile the boy was running, he didn't know where, he just knew he was running.
"Gotta keep running, must keep running, I can't believe they fell for that," thought the boy.
He kept running, but stopped once he heard a familiar voice.
"I gotta hide," said the young voice.
"Is that ... no way... that sounds just like one of the pups I saved yesterday."
He then heard advancing footsteps behind him and turned to see the two wolves from before.
"Welp, no time like the present."
He then ran to the direction of the voice.
"I hope this works."
The boy then transformed into a wolf pup. He kept going to the voice and eventually found the pup alone by the river. The pup turned and saw the boy who is now a pup come out of the bush.
"Hey, who are you," said the pup.
"Dean, who are you," said Dean.
"I'm Runt," said Runt.
"Well Runt, you are now my friend."
The two wolves from before came out of the bushes.
"Runt are you," the she wolf turned to see Dean. "Oh, who is your friend?"
Dean turned to Runt with a pleading look in his eyes. "Um Mom, Uncle Garth, this is my friend Dean." Dean looked at the two and smiled.
"Hi, I'm Dean as Runt has already said, and it is a pleasure to meet you both."
At first Runt's mom and uncle looked at Dean suspiciously.
He doesn't have our scent. Play it off and ask him later, thought Runt's mom.
They then smiled and Runt's mom spoke
"Well Dean, I am Kate, Runt's mother, and this is Garth, his uncle. It was a pleasure to meet you Dean, we were wandering if you or Runt had seen a human pup around," said Kate.
"We saw him come this way," said Garth.
Dean and Runt looked at each other. "Nope," said Runt. "Haven't seen him," said Dean.
Kate then began looking around. "Where is your father he was supposed to be watching you and your siblings with Lilly?" she asked.
Runt's eyes grew wide.
"Oh I need to hide we're playing hide and seek," said the pup.
"And you have been caught," said a voice beside Runt.
A grey wolf, a white she-wolf, and the other two pups Dean saved yesterday came out of the bush.
"Man, I shouldn't have gone for a walk today," thought Dean.
