Dean was following Kate so that they could go on patrol. Kate stopped at the bottom of a trail up to a den.
"Before we go on patrol, we are going to meet with the leaders of the pack, which are my parents and Garth's dad at my parents den."
Dean gulped before saying ok. He was not expecting to run into the leaders of the pack running on a few hours of sleep. With that they headed up to the den. Dean saw Garth and then he saw three other wolves. A female wolf the same color as Kate. A brown wolf, and a grey wolf. When everyone saw Kate they smiled, but when they saw Dean; he received questionable stares from everyone. The she-wolf that resembled Kate was the first to speak.
"Good morning Kate, may I ask why a pup that doesn't have our scent is standing beside you?" She asked.
"Good morning everyone, I would like you all to meet someone who will be staying with Humphrey and I for a little while." She then look at Dean. "Would you like to introduce yourself?"
Dean looked at everyone eyes on him he looked. "Hi, I am Dean and it is a pleasure to meet the leaders of the pack, and Garth it is good to see you again." The grey wolf was the first to speak after Dean's introduction.
"Hello Dean, I am Winston." He pointed to the other female wolf. "This is my wife Eve." She waved. He then pointed to the brown wolf "this is Tony, the other leader of the pack and I guess you met Tony's son Garth."
"Yes sir I did."
Tony then Spoke.
"Well that answers one of the few questions I have about this scenario, so let's try another. Dean, where did you come from?"
"I came here from Colorado, a few miles north from the town of Lakeside."
Everyone except Kate gasped.
"What brought you here from so far away?" Asked Winston.
"A camper van. The reason I came here is my home was no longer safe, so mom sent me here. She said she will find me once everything is safe."
Everyone was looking at Dean to see if he was lying. Winston spoke up.
"Well I can't tell if your lying to us, so I have another question, and I want you to look me in the eyes when I ask it. Dean had kept his eyes down to not issue a challenge, but now he was staring directly into the eyes of Winston.
"Do you have any intention of harming my pack or family."
"I have no intention of harming your pack or family." Dean kept eye contact with him the whole time.
He smiled at this. "I believe you Dean, your parents taught you well to not look a leader of the pack in the eyes, but I don't think a pup at your age will be challenging anyone other than another pup, so you can look us in the eyes if you want."
"Thank you sir, I was taught that to not look a predator in the eyes or turn my back."
"You are smart too. Do you know how to track and hunt prey too." Said Tony jokingly.
"I wish I did. I spent my first day here eating berries.
"Well, you are very brave for coming all this way but I have a question?" Asked Eve.
"Most pups your age are asleep, but you are not. Why is that?"
"I couldn't sleep after I woke up so Mrs. Kate took me to get some water, and asked if I wanted to go on patrol. I wasn't going back to sleep, so I thought why not?"
Eve nodded at his response. "Well what are we waiting for let's go on patrol."
Kate and Garth were confused. "What mom?" Eve then looked at her mate. "Winston, dear, how long has it been since our last patrol of the territory?" Winston thought about it. "Hmmm, I think it was right after Kate and Humphreys wedding."
"Yes, it was and it was such a wonderful time. Would you like to patrol with me again?"
Winston smiled at his mate. "I would love too."
"I will stay here in case news of anything important arrives." Stated Tony.
Everyone nodded and began the patrol around the territory. It was quiet at first with Kate pointing out landmarks for Dean to remember and places to remember for the first few miles. It was small talk amongst the grownups. That was until Eve had some questions for Dean.
"Dean, it had been a long time since I heard of wolves in Colorado. How many pack members did you have?"
"It was just my mom,sister, dad and uncle."
"Interesting what were your parents names? We might have met them." Asked Winston.
"My mom's name is Sarah, my Dad's name is Jesse."
Everyone thought for a second and then shook their heads. "No I don't think I have met your parents it will be nice to meet new wolves. Do you know when they are coming?"
"Dean looked down as he walked.
"I don't know, but mom said she will find me when it was safe."
"I think your mother will find you soon and everything will be fine. You have to keep up the good spirits Dean; it's bad for you if you don't." said Eve.
Dean lifted his head up and smiled at her. "Thank you Mrs. Eve."
"You are welcome." The patrol continued and Dean kept thinking to himself how his mom will find him and everything will be fine. Soon the patrolling was done and Dean soon returned to the pups to play the rest of the day with the family.
