Dean was fast asleep. He did not realize that everyone else was up. Waya decided to let him sleep while everyone else began waking up. Kate was given the day off since they just rescued Runt. She enjoyed the extra hours of sleep, and she was rejuvenated and ready for the day. She noticed her mate was waking up and her pups were as well. She then turned her head to see one blonde pup was asleep, but his companion was wide awake. She noticed how Waya was just looking down on Dean. As if it would be the last time he would look at Dean again. She decided to say something. She got up and walked closer to the two. Waya paid no attention to her and he continued to stare at Dean.
"He is a cute pup," she whispered.
Waya nodded his head.
"He is, but now I must wake him up."
Waya began to gently nudge Dean awake.
"Guardian, it is time to wake up. The day has already started without you, and you do not want to miss what wonders today has to offer."
Dean opened his eyes and yawned. He then shook his head and looked to the mountain of a wolf next to him.
"Good morning Waya." He then looked at the rest of the wolves.
"Good morning everyone." Everyone said their good mornings and continued on with their business.
"How did you sleep Guardian."
"My sleep was amazing. I really needed it. How about you?"
"Oh, I slept fine."
Waya hated it, but he had just lied to Dean. He slept horribly because of all the thoughts running through his head as well as all the power he is using is starting to take its toll on the wolf. Runt then ran up to Dean.
"Hey Dean, so we were wondering if you wanted to come and play with us today? Mom and Dad said it was ok if we stayed by an area close enough to hear a howl."
Dean's tail began to wag. He turned and looked at Waya , with excitement in his eyes. This whole situation made Waya chuckle.
"Excited much pup?"
"What?" The pup than turned and looked at his tail.
"Hey, stop that."
His tail then stopped wagging.
"Can I go Waya? Can I, Can I?"
Waya thought for a moment.
"Very well Guardian, you may go if you so desire, but please come back to me when you are finished. Remember, if you see danger, howl. Now, go and have fun."
With that the pups bolted out of the den. This left Waya alone with Kate and Humphrey.
They all stared at each other for a moment. Humphrey decided to try and start a conversation.
"So, Waya how's-,"
"I need to speak to both of you before the pups return," stated Waya sternly.
"I thought so, you looked like you had a lot on your mind," said Kate.
Waya motioned for the two to come closer and sit. They did so.
"My job is to protect the future Guardians."
Kate and Humphrey nodded their heads.
"Well, the Guardian is being hunted."
Kate and Humphrey gasped.
"I am going to stop this hunter, but to do so I want to be as far away from here as possible."
"If I don't return, then the Guardians mother or father will be here to retrieve him."
"Why are you telling us this," asked Kate.
"I am telling you this because I have a task for you. I know a am asking a lot of you, but if the Guardian's family does not retrieve him, then I wish for you to protect him, and I wish for you to watch over him, for I have chosen you as his next guardians shall any of us fall."
Kate and Humphrey were in utter disbelief. They couldn't believe the words escaping this wolves mouth. He wants them to take care of Dean if he, or Dean's parents don't come to get him. Kate and Humphrey had only one question running through both their heads, why.
"Why us," asked Humphrey.
"The reason...evades me as well, but I do know that you care for this pup. I know that by listening to your conversation from last night. I heard the words you spoke. You reminded me a two parents consoling a child."
Kate and Humphrey looked at each other and then they looked back to Waya. He then continued.
"Kate, you helped Guardian after he suffered from a nightmare. You dote on him and scold him when he doesn't take care of himself as a mother would to any child.
They remained silent.
"I just wish for you two to promise me that you will watch over him in my absence."
They remained silent.
Kate then looked at Humphrey and they moved away from Waya.
"Ok, what do you think," asked Kate.
"I think that if Waya or Dean's parents don't show up, then we should look out for him. He is still just a kid and needs to learn how to survive."
Kate nodded her head.
"I agree with you."
They walked back to Waya.
"Waya, you have our word. We will do as you ask," spoke Humphrey.
"Thank you so much. I am in your debt. Now, I can leave without worrying about the Guardian's survival. My next problem will be telling the Guardian that I am leaving."
Speaking of the Guardian, Dean was now playing tag with the pups. They weren't too far from the den, and they were having the time of their lives.
Dean was it and he was gaining on Runt.
"I'm gonna get you Runt."
"No you're not Dean."
Dean then saw a grey tail sticking out of a bush.
"No, I'm gonna get Stinky."
Dean then tapped on Stinky's tail and he heard a yip from out of the bush.
Dean laughed and began running as soon as he saw Stinky coming out of the bush.
This playing continued for a couple more hours with various games. They soon got tired and decided to head home. On the way home, they decided to talk.
"So, what do you guy's think I am," asked Dean.
The pup's looked at him confused.
"An alpha or an omega is what I meant."
"Oh...you're an alpha," said Stinky.
"Really?"
"Yeah."
"How can you tell?"
"Well, you can keep up with Stinky and I ,who are alphas, while Runt can't keep up with us for long. He's an omega," stated Claudette.
"Ok, I get it now."
"Yeah, you guy's are really fast," said Runt.
"Yeah, but you are clever. The only other wolves I have seen that are as clever as you are Dad, and Dean," said Stinky.
"Thanks," said Runt.
"Runt, do you want to be an omega?"
Everyone stopped and looked at Dean questionably.
"I mean I was born slower than my siblings. I also don't know how to fight, or how to hunt."
"That's not what I asked."
"Every time I play with you guys, you have to slow down for me to tag you. I don't want to slow you down. I want to be stronger, so I can help more with the pack. Weather that being protecting everyone, hunting, or keeping the peace between wolves."
"That's great Runt," said Claudette.
"So, you wanna be an omega, but you want to be strong," said Dean.
"Yeah."
"That's cool, I hope you can achieve your dream."
"Yeah, I do too."
With that the pups continued on their trek to the den.
That was until two voices from above interrupted their walk.
"Look out below," they shouted.
The pups stopped and looked up as a duck and a goose landed in front of them. The three pups recognized the pair, but that left Dean completely stumped as to what was happening at this moment.
"Hi pups," said the duck.
"Paddy, Marcel, it's so good to see you," spoke Runt.
"What are you guy's doing here," asked Claudette.
"Well, we were traveling in the area and we decided to pay you and you're family a visit," said the goose, now known to be Marcel.
Dean tapped Stinky and motioned for him to come close.
"Who's the duck and the goose?"
"Oh, sorry about that, Dean. Marcel, Paddy, this is our friend Dean."
The duck walked up and grabbed Dean's paw in his wings.
"Pleasure to make your acquaintance. I am paddy."
"And I am Marcel the French goose."
"Uh, that's French Canadian sir."
"French."
"French Canadian."
"French!"
"French Canadian."
The argument continued until Dean stepped in.
"Uh, Marcel?"
"Yes, Dean."
"si vous êtes entièrement Français, vous pouvez comprendre ce que je dis, n'est-ce pas?"
(In English: if you are completely French, you can understand what i am saying, can't you?)
The goose had no idea how to respond to the words Dean just said.
"Uh..."
Dean just grinned.
"Ok, now that we cleared that up, let's go."
"Wait what," spoke the goose.
"I just spoke French. My parents taught me to speak it."
"You're parents spoke French? How did they learn it," asked Paddy.
"Well, when you're the Guardian's child, you tend to learn some stuff.
"Oh yes I bet."
Dean's words sank in and the bird's eyes grew wide.
They looked at each other.
"Guardian," they shouted.
They immediately began bowing.
"Uh, you can get up. Please, don't do that again."
Dean was taken back by their actions. He had never had someone bow to him. He didn't like it.
They immediately rose up.
"It's an honor to meet you your Guardianess, but what are you doing here of all places?"
"Uh Dean is fine, and I am waiting for my mother to get me. While I am waiting, I am staying with Kate and Humphrey."
"Well, it is a pleasure to meet you," said Marcel.
"You as well."
"Wait Marcel, how did you two know about the Guardians," asked Stinky.
"The tales of the Guardian and his adventures have been told to us since we were hatchlings," spoke the goose.
"Some animals remember more of the Guardians than others," said Dean.
"For other animals, the Guardians were forgotten, or are talked about very seldom. My dad said he thought it would happen because when there was nothing to fight, he began to travel. Over the years, his stories soon became just stories. Elders told their kids and so on, but the stories changed over the years and became just legends."
"Wow, that's actually really sad," said Runt.
"No, dad was ok with it. He didn't want all the attention anyways. That's why we lived in the woods away from everyone, and..." Dean was so caught up in talking that he did not see the wolf that was standing in front of him.
He hit the wolf's leg and stopped. He shook it off looked up.
"I am so sorry I wasn't looking where I was going... Oh, hey Waya."
The pups lost track of time and did not realize they made it back to the den.
"Hello Guardian," spoke the skeleton patterned wolf. He then turned to see Marcel and Paddy shaking in fear of the giant wolf.
"...and guests."
Kate and Humphrey came out.
"Marcel, Paddy, It is so good to see you," said Kate. She then gave each of them a hug.
"What are you guys doing here," asked Humphrey.
Marcel began to speak.
"Well, we decided to pay you a visit since we were in the area. We then saw the pups and landed. Come to find out that you are housing the Guardians child."
Waya then tapped Dean. Dean looked up to the giant. Waya began to speak.
"Can I talk to you for a moment?"
"Sure"
The two then walked outside of the den. Dean spoke.
"So...what did you wanna tal-" Waya interrupted the pup.
"I need to leave."
Dean was taken back by the words, and thought he heard wrong.
"What?"
