Chapter 28: Aftermath
The stadium went deathly quiet as they heard Hermione's primal screams, suddenly realising that something was amiss. Hearing the brunette's pleas for the Beauxbaton Champion to wake up, the Grangers, Delacours and the Beauxbatons Clan girls all hurried down the stands. Hogwarts professors inched closer, in shock at what they were witnessing.
Apolline stumbled as she approached her daughter's still body, heart in her throat. It couldn't be.
"Ma… maman?" Gabrielle's scared wobbly voice resonated in the silence as she clutched her mother's skirt, blue eyes so similar to Fleur's fixed on her sister's still body.
Armand pulled his trembling youngest into his arms, holding onto her tightly as tears flowed freely down his cheeks, Fleur's grandfather, Léon by his side, holding onto his shoulder to keep himself up.
Apolline dropped to her knees, taking one of Fleur's hands. The blonde's skin was starting to get cold and clammy and she had a hard time registering what was happening. Her baby… it can't be. She stared unblinkingly at Hermione who was sobbing and wailing into her daughter's chest.
Angelique Delacour hurriedly knelt by Hermione and tried to pull the brunette away from Fleur's body but the young woman wouldn't let go, "my child, please. I… I need to check…" the rest of her words were lost, stuck in her throat. She didn't want to say for fear it would become true. Fleur couldn't be dea-. Gently pulling Hermione into her arms, she consoled the sobbing girl momentarily before focusing on the still body of her granddaughter. The sight was jarring, despite Fleur looking like she was just sleeping. Waving her hand over the blonde, she started her incantations.
Hermione watched helplessly as Fleur's grandmother started doing unknown spells, in Veelan. Her worst nightmare had come true. Fleur was gone… She sobbed harder at the thought of it. Fleur was gone! Oh, God! She couldn't deal with that. She needed Fleur like she needed air. She couldn't live without her blonde, they had made so many plans for after graduation. Her body shook as she muttered incoherently under her rasping breaths, fingers clawing into her thighs as she looked at her girlfriend's still body, praying to any god that could possibly reside in the sky to wake her from this nightmare.
Apolline pulled the Gryffindor into her arms, feeling the tremors racking the brunette's body, lost in what to do to comfort the crumpling girl when she was barely hanging on, herself. Hermione whimpered at the touch, posture rigid as her muscles tensed. She dared not take her eyes off Fleur.
A gasp from Angelique made the Gryffindor flinch but the Veela Elder's next words shook her to the core.
"She's still alive," Angelique whispered, completely stunned at her own words before she repeated it louder, "she's still alive! We need to get 'er to ze 'ospital."
Hermione's heart raced as a flurry of movements erupted around her. Alive? Apolline jumped to her feet barking orders and Armand gathered Fleur's limp body into his arms, Hermione scrambling to her feet to follow, sticking to him like glue. She reached out and clasped one of Fleur's limp hands, not wanting to be separated from her blonde.
Dumbledore rushed them all to the Floo in his office where one by one, they shouted "St Mungo!" and disappeared into the green flames.
She's still alive… the only coherent thought in Hermione's mind.
ᴥ
Hermione was sure she was having a heart attack with how violently her heart was hammering in her chest. Fleur was alive? She wanted it to be true so bad… she had never wanted… no, needed... something as badly as Fleur being alive… but the blonde hadn't moved, wasn't breathing nor did Hermione hear her heartbeats… how?
A flurry of movements happened around her as Mediwitches and Mediwizards rushed towards them, ushering them into a consultation room while Angelique explained as much as she could. There, Armand finally relinquished his hold on his eldest daughter, depositing her onto the bed but Hermione couldn't… she barely heard what was being said around her, her hand still holding Fleur's into a vice grip.
"Please work around her," Angelique instructed the Healers, "she is my Veela granddaughter's mate." She quickly instructed Armand and Léon to go take care of Gabrielle and the Clan outside, while she stayed inside the room with Apolline and Hermione.
The Healers nodded and continued assessing their patient. They were knowledgeable enough to not try and separate a Veela from their mate, knowing that close proximity was known to accelerate healing for the species.
Apolline brought a chair and slipped it under Hermione. The Gryffindor Head Girl barely registered the gentle pressure of hands on her shoulders as her legs collapsed and she sank into the seat.
The Head Mediwitch finished her first round of diagnostic spells and frowned, turning towards Angelique. "I am Head Mediwitch Torres. She is breathing and her heart is still beating, unnaturally slow though. Nearly indistinguishable really… It seems like she is in a sort of magical stasis. I've never seen anything like this before."
Hermione's ears finally registered Mediwitch Torres's words and her head shot up, "So… so she is alive," she croaked out, voice breaking yet so full of hope now that a second person mentioned Fleur being alive.
The Mediwitch looked at the brunette sympathetically, "Yes... at least for now. We need to bring her body back to its normal rate. She won't stay alive long in stasis. There is only this wound I could detect," the woman said, pulling Fleur's collar down to show a lightning bolt-shaped wound right above her heart. "If you know more about how she got it-"
Hermione sucked in a sharp breath, "It's like Harry's…" she whispered, "the Killing Curse..."
The whole room gasped at Hermione's utterance.
"Oh…" Mediwitch Torres, "I need to go and consult with the Hogwarts' Headmaster. Please excuse me. Elder Delacour, if you could please come with me."
Hermione watched the Mediwitch and Angelique left the room. Apolline pressed a kiss against her forehead, whispering that she will be back soon and went to go check on her youngest and how Armand and Léon were dealing with the Clan, leaving Hermione with Fleur as the other healers trickled out as well, having hooked the blonde to their monitoring machines and spells.
Hermione appreciated the support from her mate's family and their trust in her in knowing that she would be there keeping an eye on Fleur. She gently squeezed the slender hand she hadn't let go of and brought it to her lips to press a soft kiss against the clammy skin, "I love you, Fleur… God, you are so stupid…" the tears came unbridled and she sobbed helplessly, "I realise now that you jumped in front of us… I thought we had portkeyed before the curse got to us… I can't lose you, Fleur…" her words were muffled as she cried into the blonde's hand, "please… please… please, wake up… come back to me… I beg you." She broke down, feeling the weight of the last few hours bearing down on her. She couldn't lose Fleur, she couldn't… She had crumpled earlier thinking her blonde was dead, she couldn't experience that again. The Veela was so deeply entrenched in her, in her everyday life, in her very being that she didn't want to imagine life without her by her side. She cupped the unconscious girl's cheek lovingly and pressed a gentle kiss onto her unmoving lips, hoping to convey just how much she needed the blonde to come back to her… hoping that the girl would feel it and wake up for her.
ᴥ
Hermione kept vigil by Fleur's bedside throughout the night, unable to sleep. She had only gotten as far as to pull her chair closer to the blonde and rest her head on Fleur's hand, still clasped in hers. Healers would come in and out to check on the blonde. She made sure to fix the blonde's blanket every time the Healers moved it around, pressing gentle kisses on the Veela's forehead, before going back to lay her head down.
The door opened again and she turned around to see the Delacour family trickle in, followed by Dumbledore. The Grangers, due to being Muggles, unfortunately, had had to stay back at Hogwarts with Professor McGonagall.
"Miss Granger," Dumbledore greeted, his face serious.
"Now zhat we are all 'ere together," Léon said, giving an encouraging smile to Hermione, "can you tell us what 'appened?
Dumbledore took a deep breath, "We have come to the conclusion that Karkaroff is the one behind all this. He turned the Cup into a Portkey, possibly during one of his visits to my office and that is how Mr Potter, and Miss Delacour and Granger, all ended up in that graveyard. With Mr Potter's details of the event, we managed to get to the graveyard with the team of Aurors Mr Bagman hastily called upon from the Ministry of Magic. They arrived swiftly and we set off. We got to the graveyard and found the dead body of Voldemort."
He heard the gasps from the others in the room but continued, looking directly at Hermione, "From Mr Potter's recounting, Voldemort sent a killing curse towards you all when you portkeyed back to Hogwarts. From the description of Miss Delacour's wound from Mediwitch Torres, I would speculate that the same thing happened as to what happened with Harry Potter. My assumption is that you all didn't get to the portkey quickly enough and the Killing Curse struck Miss Delacour, leaving the lightning scar, similarly to the one on Mr Potter's forehead, there must have been some sort of protection that made the curse bounce back and hit Voldemort. This time, he left a body behind."
"But...how?" Hermione asked, "Harry told me that you said he survived because his mother sacrificed herself for him…"
Dumbledore looked at his Head Girl, "We cannot be entirely sure, Miss Granger. Magic has its own peculiarities and mystery sometimes. I believe that Miss Delacour's will to sacrifice herself for both you and Mr Potter, her heritage, as well as her bond with you all, somehow played a role in keeping her alive."
Hermione's eyes misted and she nodded, she didn't really care as long as Fleur was alive. She just wanted her love to wake up.
"'Ow do you know it was Karkaroff?" Apolline asked.
"He went with us to the graveyard," Dumbledore explained, "There, we found Peter Pettigrew, petrified. We reversed the spell and he confessed to his crimes, implicating Karkaroff and asking for mercy in exchange for revealing more names. This caused Karkaroff to go in a rage and he tried to finish him for failing their mission to Voldemort. Mr Potter also mentioned that Miss Delacour said Mr Krum attacked her in the maze, we believe he was imperiused by Karkaroff as the Hogwarts Professors found him unconscious in the maze. Upon waking up, he told us that he lost control of his body as soon as he entered the maze."
"Peter Pettigrew?" Angelique asked, the name unfamiliar to her. Her head was still spinning over the resurgence of Voldemort. She turned to look at her husband to see if he recognised the name but Léon shook his head.
"Peter Pettigrew was a friend of the Potters. He was the one who betrayed their trust and told Voldemort where they were hiding, which led to their deaths. He faked his death to put the blame on Sirius Black and has been living as an animagus, a rat... all this time," Hermione whispered, remembering their encounter inside the Shrieking Shack.
"Yes, the Ministry is looking into that now that he has been apprehended," Dumbledore replied with a slight nod to the brunette.
"Is Voldemort really gone?" asked Armand, Dumbledore's words finally sinking in.
"We believe so, Mr Delacour," Dumbledore replied, "I don't think even he could survive a misfiring Killing Curse twice."
Hermione tuned them out as they continued conversing. While she knew it was a momentous thing that Voldemort was finally gone... Harry would be ecstatic about that... and that Sirius' innocence could now finally be proven, she felt selfish when she realised all she cared about at the moment was Fleur. God, how she wished the blonde hadn't used her body as a shield to protect her. Having to see her proud Veela all still and frail on the hospital bed was excruciating. But the most excruciating thing of all was that she couldn't feel their bond… the lack of it was jarring... as if someone had pulled all organs out of her body. It made her feel lost and empty, hollow inside. She wanted her Veela to wake up, azure eyes to be twinkling and the blonde to flirt with her, crack a joke and tease her like she always does just to make her smile. She wanted to hear the husky French accent she was so used to, she wanted to hear Fleur call out her name, call her 'Ermione .
A click of the door made Hermione turn again and she realised that Dumbledore had left and Angelique was approaching her.
"Child, 'ow are you doing?" Angelique asked affectionately, running a gentle hand over her dishevelled bushy hair and Hermione couldn't hold it in, bursting into sobs and found herself wrapped in two pairs of arms, realising that Apolline had joined in.
"I just want her to wake up," Hermione sobbed into the Delacour matriarch's chest.
"I know, mon chérie, I know," Apolline replied, whispering into the brunette's hair while holding off her own tears. It was like her heart was being shredded to pieces, seeing her little girl on the verge of death. No mother should have to go through that.
ᴥ
A week went by and there was little to no change in Fleur's condition. No amount of praying or bargaining to the gods and goddesses on Hermione's part changed anything. The medical staff were stumped with Fleur's case.
"Her vitals have not changed for the better," Mediwitch Torres said with a sigh, "In fact, they are worsening with time… we are running out of time."
"No! NO! You cannot say that!" Hermione shouted, jumping from her seat, "there must be something else we can try."
"I'm afraid Miss Granger that we have tried everything in our repertoire, even with our Veela experts. Even the Veela practices and medicines have had no effect."
"No, please, no," Hermione whimpered, shaking her head as her fingers clutching painfully at her chest, feeling like her heart was giving out, "Please…." she pleaded, rivulets of tears rolling down her cheeks unashamed.
Mediwitch Torres looked at the young woman with sympathy but knew there was nothing she could do. She looked at the Delacour women as they pulled the crying girl into their arms. "I shall leave you with your family," she whispered, feeling defeated at the situation. Oh, how she wished she could fix things for these people. How she wished it didn't have to end like this. With a small bow of apology, she walked out of the door.
"No, no, I can't…" Hermione gasped, feeling like she was suffocating, "I can't lose her." The arms around her tightened but they gave no solace.
"'Ermione, I believe we 'ave reached the limit of wizard magical 'ealing in zis case… there seems to be little time left…" Angelique's voice cracked as she said those words, nothing seemed to work.
"No, no, no!" Hermione sobbed, "We are not giving up, I will never give up on her!" she shouted, shaking to the core. She couldn't, wouldn't give up on her blonde.
"Maybe…" Angelique whispered after a moment of deep thought, "maybe we can try something else… but…"
"But what? What? Tell me!" Hermione asked urgently, grasping at the older woman tightly, barely restraining herself from shaking Angelique so she could speak faster.
"It requires your participation but there is a very big risk-"
"Maman, non…" Apolline interrupted her mother but Hermione's eyes were blazing, focused on the Delacour matriarch.
"I'll take any risk there is. Please grandmère, please…" Hermione used the familiar name to plead to the matriarch, "I'll do anything… anything for her to wake up."
Angelique nodded reluctantly and turned to Apolline, "get ze preparations ready and inform our healer."
"Oui Maman," Apolline replied, sighing in defeat. She knew Fleur would not agree to have Hermione do this but at the same time, as the blonde's mother, she wanted Hermione to go ahead with it. She felt indebted to the brunette who was willing, without hesitation, to go to any length to save her baby. Pressing a motherly kiss onto Hermione's forehead, she pulled away and left the room.
ᴥ
An hour later, Apolline came back with Armand and another woman in tow. The woman, a brunette with green eyes, was dressed in dark-green flowing robes that had intricate golden embroideries on the front and trims.
"Ancien Delacour," the brunette greeted the matriarch.
"Médecin Devereux, thank you for getting everything ready and coming so quickly," Angelique replied, "this is Fleur's mate, Hermione Granger," she introduced the Gryffindor.
"A pleasure to meet you, Miss Granger, I wish it had been in better circumstances."
Hermione nodded solemnly, saying a quiet hello.
"Everything is ready, Maman," Apolline replied, "The Head Mediwitch has authorised Fleur's discharge," Apolline said before continuing in a smaller voice, "she reckons it's best for her to spend her last hours in a familiar setting with family and friends."
Hermione bristled at those words.
Angelique shook her head, "Let's get her home… Armand?"
Fleur's father gathered his daughter in his arms and carefully manoeuvred out of the room, everyone following closely, Hermione closer than others, one hand still clasping Fleur's.
Angelique only gently made her let go as Armand stepped into the International Floo fireplace, reassuring her that they would be following soon after.
It only took less than a minute from Hermione seeing Fleur disappearing in flames, to appearing in Fleur's living room, finding Armand in front of her, still holding the blonde. She quickly stepped forward and took Fleur's hand again. That minute separation had made her breath catch and now that she was touching the blonde, she could finally breathe again.
The fire roared multiple times behind her to indicate that everyone else's arrival.
"Let's move her to the clearing. I need her in the Veela circle," the Healer said.
Hermione followed, exiting the building into the sunny brilliance of France. Any other day, she would have enjoyed the warm sunshine but not today. It took a short trek through the dense woods next to the chateau before they emerged into a beautiful clearing full of flowers, a myriad of colours sprinkled over a sea of green. Large white monuments formed a large circle in the middle which reminded Hermione of Stonehenge except so much better. The monuments were two-storey high, and carved in white marble, depicting Veela in different states, one with wings spread wide, sword pointing out, ready for battle, another kneeling, sword into the ground, wings wrapped around herself, another still kneeling, arms to the sky in supplication, and so many more. Hermione looked at the statues in awe. In her observation, she didn't notice the group of Veela dressed in white robes come out of the forest to surround them, Gabrielle amongst the group, having been the only child allowed.
"Please deposit the Heiress onto the altar, " the Healer ordered, bringing Hermione's attention back to her, "Miss Granger, please lie down beside her."
Hermione watched as Armand carefully deposited Fleur onto the low marble platform in the middle and did as instructed, lying down by the blonde's side, hand still secured in hers.
"Miss Granger," the Healer said as she approached the brunette, "we are going to start the spells and rituals to try and heal Fleur, using your bond with her as a conduit and enhancer. Please do not let go of her hand at any point."
Hermione didn't need anyone telling her that, she wasn't planning on letting go.
"If we see no change, the Veela will close in and I will attempt a spell that will share your magical cores through your bond. This process is dangerous, cores have specific signatures and can be shared very sparsely, only between families of the same blood. We are hoping your bond will help with that technicality. It is very dangerous, we don't know what could happen to both of you. Do you consent?"
"Yes," replied Hermione without hesitation.
"You might start feeling adverse effects to your body and possibly pain. As the ritual leader, I will sense it. Would you wish us to stop at that point?"
"No, don't stop at any cost until she wakes up. She has to."
The Healer nodded before stepping back.
Hermione stared at the blue sky before turning to look at her blonde, who looked like she was peacefully slumbering but the lack of chest movement going up and down to indicate she was breathing broke the illusion. Chanting started around her, in the Healer's voice before being joined by countless Veela. Hermione felt the hair on her arms rise as the air started crackling with powerful magic. Her body twitched and she felt like she was being zapped by electricity from all sides, the chants getting louder and louder, ringing in her eardrums and feeling like it was splitting her head. Pain raced through her veins and she fell unconscious.
ᴥ
Hermione's eyes blinked open and she groaned as her body ached all over. Suddenly realising she wasn't under the warm sun anymore, she sat up despite her body complaining. It was night? And she was at Hogwarts? At the lake?
"You are up, ma chérie," a voice hummed behind her.
Hermione pivoted so fast, she was sure she snapped multiple bones and ligaments to do so. She stared wide-eyed at the beauty in front of her.
"'Ermione?" the voice called out with worry. Fleur was kneeling in front of her, watching her with concern.
Hermione choked a sob at hearing her name in that accent again and launched herself into the blonde's arms, unable to stifle the rest of her sobs as she connected with a warm, solid, moving body. I can hear her heartbeat! And feel our bond! "Fleur! Fleur!"
Fleur looked at the brunette in worry and pulled her tighter into her arms, "I'm 'ere, mon amour. What is it? You 'ad a bad dream?"
Hermione was inclined to think it was a bad dream but the prickle of magic still giving her goosebumps told her otherwise. She could still feel her ears ringing from the Veela chants. "What is the last thing you remember?" She asked, lifting her head to look into those twinkling azure eyes she loved so much.
Fleur looked at her funny for a second, thinking it was a weird question until she tried to remember and came up blank. Her brows furrowed as she tried harder to remember.
Hermione could see the blonde becoming agitated and pulled her in a loving kiss, feeling the blonde relax in her arms and return the kiss. Oh, how she had missed this, the feeling of Fleur's lips on hers, the gentleness with which Fleur always kissed her like she was precious and fragile. She opened her mouth to invite the blonde in and Fleur didn't hesitate, sending a shiver down Hermione's spine when their tongues met as the kiss deepened.
Hermione pushed the blonde down onto the grass and kissed her as if her life depended on it. It was only when they pulled apart for breath that Hermione told her everything.
Fleur's eyes blazed at Hermione's words, "why would you do zhat!? Why would you take such a risk to your life!?"
Hermione stiffened, "You were dying, Fleur! I had to do something to bring you back!"
Fleur's nostrils flared as anger coursed through her veins, "I was dying because I saved your life! For you to endanger yourself again iz stupid beyond comprehension!"
Hermione slapped the blonde hard, watching as the Veela's face morphed into shock before she pulled the blonde by the collar until they were nose to nose, her amber eyes burning with fury as well as misting with tears, "I love you, you stupid Veela!" she whispered harshly against Fleur's lips, "We are mates, I need you with me. I'm here now and you are coming back home with me. I am not leaving without you." With that, she kissed the blonde harshly, biting her lips and pulling at the flesh.
Fleur groaned as Hermione mauled her, with hard and desperate kisses and bites.
"Say you are coming home with me, say it!" Hermione said, voice rough as she continued her attack on the blonde's mouth.
Fleur moaned, hands roaming all over the brunette's body. "Yes."
As soon as the words were whispered, the ground started to shake, cracking underneath them. Fleur gathered Hermione in her arms and tried to reach for her wand but found nothing. She tried to run away, carrying Hermione but realised she was the cause of the tremors, noticing how the ground cracked only where she stepped. She tried to let go of Hermione.
"Don't let me go!" Hermione shouted, arms tightly wrapped around the blonde in an unbreakable embrace.
"Hermione, let me go and run!" Fleur shouted back, trying to dislodge the brunette off her.
"Never!"
Alas, they waited too long, the ground split apart underneath them and they fell into the crevice. Fleur held onto her brunette and closed her eyes, bracing for the impact.
ᴥ
Hermione gasped and sat up, finding herself under a golden afternoon sky instead of buried underground. She looked around and realised she was back at the Veela circle, the Veela completely silent. Turning to look at Fleur, she found her in the same state as before.
"Fleur?" She called out, straddling the blonde's body and shaking her gently. The bond she had felt in her heart earlier was back to being absent and it made her tear up, "Fleur, please wake up, please… Fleur… Fleur!" Her heart started racing as she felt panic well through her. Her head whipped at the silent mass of Veela, "why did you stop?! WHY?!"
She was about to start screaming when a wave of warmth rushed through her and her head whipped back to Fleur's prone body… waiting and waiting until she finally felt it… a slight twitch underneath her palm that was on the blonde's chest. Slowly the twitch became stronger and stronger until she finally felt the blonde's heartbeat.
Blue eyes groggily blinked open and Hermione wasted no time in capturing the blonde's lips into a searing kiss then started kissing the blonde all over her face, "You are back, you are back," Hermione wept against the blonde's face.
Cheers erupted around them as the Delacour family rushed forward to hug their Fleur. Hermione smiled and moved away but took Fleur's hand in hers again, not willing to let go completely. Fleur's parents and grandparents hugged the blonde and Hermione tightly, crying in their hair and shoulders while Gabrielle attached herself to her sister's leg, crying into her stomach.
ᴥ
It took a while for everyone's emotions to settle, Hermione being hugged and thanked by Fleur's family and countless other Veela. They had dinner, Hermione feeding Fleur the little food she could stomach, the blonde unable to feed herself due to her muscles being too weak before they retired to bed in Fleur's room. Gabrielle didn't let go and fell asleep clutching Fleur's leg while the blonde played with her sister's hair. It was only after the little girl fell asleep that Apolline came to fetch her and take her to her own room but not before bestowing a kiss on each girl's forehead.
With that, Hermione and Fleur were left alone. Hermione stared at the Veela, revelling in seeing her love awake and alive as well as feeling the usual hum of their bond within her chest, weakened but there.
She watched Fleur struggle to settle down, the weakness in her muscles making the most simple things a difficult task. Pulling the blonde gently into her arms, she tucked her in and drew the blanket over her frail form, blue eyes observing her movements.
"Je t'aime."
Hermione's eyes teared up and she kissed the blonde gently, "I love you too, so much." She would never take for granted, having the blonde in her arms.
"Je suis désolée…" [I am sorry]
"Don't be," replied Hermione, pressing a loving kiss on the Veela's forehead.
They kissed gently, whispering sweet nothings and words of devotion to each other until they fell asleep, wrapped in each other's arms, melded together to the point no one could tell where one began and the other ended.
