Dean, began to stir in his sleep. He opened his eyes barely and noticed that everyone in the den was gone. He rose up from his slumber, but quickly regretted that decision as his head began pounding. He rubbed it with one of his paws, and began to stand. He slowly looked around, and his first thought was confirmed, everyone was gone.
"Dean," shouted a voice from outside the den.
Dean looked to the entrance and heard someone coming up. He yawned as he waited for someone to come up. Soon Eve became visible through the entrance.
"Oh good, you're awake," she spoke. "I really didn't want to wake you."
"No, I woke myself up." His voice was raspy, and sore. "Where is everyone?"
"Well, the pups are off with their grandpa and Tony, while Humphrey is off with his omega friends, and Kate is performing some alpha duties at the moment. Kate sent me here to see if you were awake, and to give you a checkup."
"How long was I asleep?"
"All day yesterday, you were asleep."
Dean's eyes grew wide. He didn't think he slept that long.
"I guess I was really tired."
"I would be too if I had to endure what you had too. "
Then yesterday came back to Dean. He killed his uncle. He became something horrible. The whole pack saw.
Dean remained silent.
"Ok, now I am going to give you a checkup."
Dean just nodded.
After Eve was done she just looked at Dean.
"Well Dean, other than your throat being a little red. I don't see any other injuries on you. Your magic must be helping you a lot."
Dean just nodded.
"Thank you for the checkup."
"You're welcome."
Dean then slowly walked out of the den and quickly shielded his eyes from the bright sun. Eve walked out behind him.
" Dean," she spoke. "I want you to take it easy today. You fought for your life yesterday, and I know your body will heal quicker than others, but it still needs time to heal. Why don't you spend the day with me. I can keep an eye on you, and you can stretch your legs."
"Ok, but I need to see something quick."
"Ok dear, take all the time you need."
Dean then shifted and it was slower than usual.
Eve heard some pops and cracks and grimaced as she saw him change.
"Ouch," spoke Dean. "That hurt more than I thought it would."
He looked down and saw that his clothes were torn apart. His shirt had massive cuts in them, and his pants were no different.
"I need to get rid of these," he spoke. "Mrs. Eve, Could you please turn around?"
"Why?"
"Because I am going to change my clothes. At some point I will not have any clothes on. It's a human thing. Please?"
Eve rolled her eyes and turned around. Dean quickly undressed, and looked through his limited supply of clothes. He found a pair of underwear, sweatpants, socks, and a shirt. He had no cloak, and no shoes.
"Ok, you can turn around," he said.
Eve turned around and saw that he had everything on except for his cloak and shoes. She began to speak."Why do humans wear those things?" Clothes, as you call them."
"Humans have little hair and they can't use it to keep them warm, so they would wear them to help stay warm. Now, they can also wear them to just look nice."
"I see. What about the clothes for your paws?"
"My shoes that cover my feet were destroyed when I turned into that..thing."
"Humans are strange."
"Very, and Guardians are even stranger.
Dean then shifted into a pup.
"I didn't want to shift, and not have some better clothes.
Soon Dean and Eve were off.
Snow covered all around them, except for some trails here and there.
They began walking and Dean was still getting used to his surroundings. Dean and Eve were soon in the center of the territory. Wolves were everywhere, alphas and omega's alike. All of them saw Dean, and began staring. Dean began walking a little closer to Eve. He had his tail tucked, and his head down. Eve noticed this and spoke.
"Sit up straight Dean, be proud." Dean lifted his head up, but his tail was still tucked. Eve soon found out why as she looked around, she saw all the wolves staring at him. "They are staring at you for a reason," she said.
"They probably think I am a monster," he spoke.
"I don't think so." Soon, a male wolf began to shout. "Look, it's Dean!" They all began to run to Eve and Dean.
He was absolutely frozen, he had no idea what was about to happen. He just looked at the oncoming wolves. He closed his eyes and prepared for an attack, but that never occurred.
They all began to thank him.
"You're a hero," spoke one wolf.
"You saved us," said another.
Alphas and omegas, males and females, pups and the elderly. They were there to thank Dean for saving them from the fiery inferno.
Dean was utterly speechless.
"You're welcome." Was all Dean could say. He had the biggest smile on his face.
"You're a hero, Dean," spoke Eve. "You saved the whole pack, thank you."
"You're welcome.
They soon made it to The leaders den, and Dean saw Kate, Garth, Winston, Tony and the pups.
"Hello everyone," spoke Dean.
They said their greetings and Kate began to speak.
"How are you feeling," she asked.
"Other than my throat being a little sore, I feel fine."
"What would I give to have that healing ability," spoke Tony. "You were beaten horribly yesterday, but today you only have a sore throat."
Tony tried to get up, but the disc in his back, started acting up again.
"Mr. Tony, if you don't mind, I would like to help you with that."
Tony was hesitant at first, but soon agreed. Dean then shifted into human, and his feet his the cold surface of the den.
"Whoa that is cold. Ok Mr. Tony, lay down please."
Tony did as instructed.
Dean got on top of him and began running his hand down his back, he then felt the abnormality in the spine.
"Does that hurt?"
"Yes."
"By the way, how is your day going?"
"Well my day is going pretty OW!"
Dean quickly fixed the disc.
"There, that should work for now, and when I get my magic back, I'll heal it for good."
"How do you feel Tony," asked Winston.
"I actually feel a lot better than I was. Thank you Dean. The hero strikes again. "
"My pleasure."
The rest of the day went well. Dean saw Humphrey, and the day was generally uneventful, except for everyone thanking Dean for saving them, the day was normal. He went to sleep and woke up the next day. He then decided that today he was going to try and use his magic. His first task would be to retrieve his daggers. They were left on the battle field, and were covered in snow. He then walked out of the den, but was soon stopped by Kate.
"Where are you going, Dean," she asked.
"I am going to see if my magic is back."
He then shifted into his human form and lifted his hand up.
"I am gonna try and find my daggers."
Everyone began to walk up behind him, but he quickly stopped them.
"Please stay back," he said. "I don't have full control of this yet."
They moved back a little bit.
He then stuck both his hands up, and he began to concentrate. His hands began to glow. He pictured his daggers in his head. He then felt something land in his hands. He quickly jumped in excitement.
"Yes," he exclaimed.
He quickly sheathed his daggers and walked outside. The family followed him.
"Come closer," asked Dean. "It's ok now."
They moved closer to him. Dean walked really close to a snowdrift and bent down. He then began to heat up his hands. He then moved them by the snow. It immediately began to melt.
"Cool," said Runt.
Dean then made more snow. He then made some water, and moved a stone. He then made small bolts of lightning.
"Yes," he exclaimed "it's all back, and I feel like I can do more."
"Try it," spoke Kate.
"He then began to concentrate. He felt something inside that wanted out. He concentrated on that. He then felt a huge burst of energy flow through him. He let it out and looked at everyone. They looked afraid.
"What's wrong," asked Dean.
"Is that you, Dean," asked Stinky.
"Of coarse it's me. Why wouldn't it be me?"
"You look different," said Humphrey.
Dean then looked at his hands and feet, and he saw claws.
"That's new," he said.
"You look like the creature from when you fought your uncle. The only difference is your fur is blonde, and you're eyes are blue. said Kate.
Dean then felt something on his leg. He pulled back his sweatpants and saw a blonde wolf tail pop out of them.
"That's new."
He pulled out his phone from his pocket, and he pulled out his camera he looked at his face and saw that his hair was spiked up. He then felt something poke his tongue. He opened his mouth and saw wolf-like teeth in place of his regular teeth.
"Woah," was all Dean could say.
He looked at his clawed appendages, and flexed his hands into fists.
"Oh no, everyone get back," screamed a male voice.
Dean turned his head to see Garth and Eve.
Garth lunged at Dean thinking he lost control. Dean barely dodged out of the way.
"Garth," screamed Dean. "I am in control! It's me! It's me! Please stop!"
Dean was pleading with Garth to stop while he was biting and lunging at the boy. Garth stopped and looked at Dean. He turned his head to the side.
"Dean?"
"Yes, it's me. I unlocked this form, but I have full control."
Garth then continued to look, and he then spoke.
"Sorry about that buddy. Lilly and I were walking and saw you in this form. I thought you lost control. Now that I look at you, You may look like it, but you're definitely not the creature. You're weaker than what it was."
"How much weaker," asked Dean.
"You are slower for starters. When you were first changed, I could blink and you would be gone. Now, you were struggling to dodge my attacks."
Dean thought about it for a second. He then tried to use his magic and found out that it was not possible.
"I now understand, why," he spoke.
Everyone looked at him.
"Julius said I would find a weaker form from the one I had. I guess it is one my body can actually withstand without being hurt."
"That makes sense," spoke Garth.
"I can't even use magic in this form. I kinda want to see how much farther this body goes."
"We can help with that," said Kate.
"How," asked Dean.
"Garth and I can test you, and see just about what you can do."
"I'm up for it," said Garth.
"Ok," said Dean.
They then proceeded to race and do log squats.
Dean managed to squat less than Garth and Kate, and he lost the races, but only barely.
"That was fun," spoke Garth.
"Yeah," said Kate.
"I can say for sure that I am stronger and faster than all humans my age, but I am not a strong or as fast as two wolves. You guys are great."
"Aww thank you Dean," said Kate.
"Thank you, it means a lot coming from the son of the Guardian," said Garth.
When Garth said that it made Dean think of something. That darn box in the den.
"I will go notify the leaders of Dean's new power," said Garth.
"Bye everyone," said Lilly.
Everyone waved and they went back into the den. The day drowned on, and it was generally uneventful for Dean. He wanted the day to end, so he could open the box. The next day was uneventful Dean just played with the family. The next day was here Dean was going to open the box. He was ready for it. The three days went by, and now it was time Dean rose up from his slumber and went straight for the box. Dean picked up the shoe box, and shook it a little. The whole family was awake at this point.
"That's what you have been waiting for," said Humphrey.
Dean looked at the family.
"Over the past few days, you have seemed bored, and you used stuff to pass the time like playing with the pups. You seemed bored, so Kate and I were trying to figure out what it was. Now we know."
"Sorry if I seemed distant for the past few days," spoke Dean. "I just...this was the last thing my mom gave me before she left, and I really want to know what it is. It might be a tracker or something that would lead me to her."
"Well," began Kate. "You won't know until you see what's inside, so open it."
"Ok, thank you."
Dean then popped the lid off the shoebox to find...wrapping.
He then moved the wrapping around to find...a new cloak.
"Whoa," exclaimed Dean. "A new cloak."
This cloak was grey with gold lines running on the shoulders and bottom of it. Dean quickly threw it on.
"Wow," spoke Kate. "It looks really nice on you."
"It's super soft," spoke Dean. "And really warm. It is a little big, but nothing I can't grow into." Dean then looked back into the box and he made a face of confusion. He then pulled out the last item in the box.
"What is it," asked Claudette.
"It is a video camera," said Dean. "It takes videos like my phone, but it is only able to take pictures and videos. My father bought it for vacation purposes."
He then flipped the side open and saw a sticky note on it. It said "Play Me!!"
"Ok."
Dean then went to the old photos and videos, and found a video he didn't recognize. He hit play and his eyes grew wide. In the video was his mother.
"Mom," he spoke.
His mother looked frantic and scared. Something was wrong. She sat on the bed, and Dean finally realized that she was wearing the same clothes the night he left. This video was taken the night he left home. The wolves looked at the video, and got closer to the screen. Runt looked at Dean, and saw that he was not happy about the video.
"Hi Dean," spoke Sarah. "If you are watching this, it means that I have not come to get you within three days of your uncle being defeated. I couldn't stop you from watching this. Before I tell you anything else, Dean, You must know that your father, Drew, and I love you so much, and we only want what's best for you. Ok, Dean, what I say next is the truth." She began to shed a tear and sniffled a little. She then composed herself and began to speak again."Dean, we are dead." Everyone in the den gasped. Everyone except Dean. He didn't even make a sound he was too absorbed in what he had just heard. He was too shocked to move. The video continued. "We are dead, but you are not. I want you to do one last thing for me. I want you to be whatever you wish to be. You can be a Guardian, or you can be a normal human. You can even be an animal. The only thing I care about is if you're happy. I want you to find a new family that'll care about you, and love you. I want them to help you grow up, and be the best you that you can be. I wish I could stay longer and talk about how wonderful and smart you are, but I don't have much time. Before I go, I want you to know this one more time. I love you so much, and I will always be there with you. Goodbye Dean, forever be well, for your future is now uncertain." The screen turned to black, and the den was left in silence. Dean was as still as a statue, and remained quiet after a little bit. The camera soon fell out of Dean's hands.
Everyone looked at the boy. His face remained emotionless. He then back up a little bit from everyone. Kate took a step forward.
"Dean," she began. She lifted a paw towards him, but before she could touch him, he quickly ran out the den.
In Dean's head, the three words his mother said at the beginning were playing on loop. We...are...dead." His heart began beating frantically, and all he wanted now was to be away from everything. He wanted to disappear into nothing. He heard some voices behind him, but he just continued to run. The voices soon disappeared and Dean was now in the middle of the forest. He looked down and saw that his tracks were in the snow, and he had a trail all the way back to the den. He found the nearest tree, and began climbing. He the jumped to another tree, and another. Soon, he was where his uncle launched him in their battle. The only reason he knew that was because he saw the den he hid in. He quickly jumped down, shifted into a pup, and jumped in. He was far enough away that no one would expect him to be there. He curled up into a ball and just held himself tight. His heart began pounding and his mind began spinning. "We are dead, we are dead, we are dead," continued to play in his head. He then shivered a little bit. Even in his wolf form, he has never felt like this before. Colder than he has ever felt before. More alone than he has ever felt before. He then drifted off into an unconscious state, as all of the things moving in his head, became too much for him, and he fell asleep.
