Dean began to stir from his slumber. He opened his eyes to see that it was the evening. He stuck his head from the den. The sun was about to go down. He then continued to feel this pain in his heart. He had never encountered this type of pain before. His parents described to him what death was, but they said they wouldn't experience it unless it was special circumstances. Was the pain apart of this? Right now, he just wanted to wake up from this nightmare. It continued to snow, and the wind blew, but Dean didn't care. He was already cold, he was already tired. He wanted his family. "Dean," cried a feminine voice. Were his ears playing tricks on him? "Dean," cried a male voice. There it was again, but this time a male voice. "Where are you," screamed the female voice. Why would someone be looking for him. The only people he wanted to see were dead. He wanted to crawl back in his den. No one would be looking for him this far out. He decided to go back to sleep.
"Dean," screamed the male voice again. This time, it sounded much closer. Dean was now on high alert. Someone was definitely looking for him. He didn't want to be found. He decided to stay quiet. He turned his head to the entrance. He then saw a pair of grey front paws in front of the entrance.
"Kate, I found something," spoke the male voice.
Dean knew who those paws belonged to. He knew Humphrey was right outside his den. He soon saw yellowish brown paws in front of the den to join the grey ones. The two stuck their heads down into the snow, and in unison, they peered into the den entrance. Humphrey's grey eyes, and Kates yellowish brown met Dean's blue.
Dean didn't care if they found him or didn't. In fact, he noticed that he doesn't care about anything right now. He wishes this pain would just leave.
"Dean," spoke Kate. "Are you ok?"
Dean didn't say anything.
"Buddy," began Humphrey. "We have been looking all over for you. It's time to come back and get warm." Dean just remained silent.
"If you're not gonna come out," spoke Kate. "Then I am gonna come get you."
She then made her way into the den. She barely had room to get her body in there. She grabbed Dean by the scruff, and she began backing out. Once she was officially out of the den, she and Humphrey began running back to the pack. Throughout the travel back, Humphrey tried to make small talk with Dean, but the pup just said nothing. Once they made it back, Dean looked around and saw that everyone was in the den. The leaders, the pups, Garth, and Lilly were there waiting for Kate, Humphrey, and Dean.
"Oh thank goodness you found him," spoke Eve. "Winston you can call back all the wolves. The search is over." Winston then walked out of the den, and let out a howl. Kate sat Dean on the ground and he began walking. The pups walked in front of him, and smiled. He gently moved through them and walked to the corner of the den. He then laid down. Everyone looked at him with concern. Dean was left in his own little world. He didn't know how long, but he soon heard the leaders saying their goodbyes to Dean. He then heard Garth and Lilly say goodbye. As everyone said their goodbyes, Dean did nothing, said nothing, and just stared at the wall. He soon felt someone laying next to him. He then moved away from them. He didn't care who it was. He just wanted to be left alone. He laid back down in another corner, and he soon fell asleep. He slept the whole night away. He woke up the next morning still feeling tired. He continued to feel this pain in his chest. It was unbearable. He then turned human. He flipped the hood of his cloak on his head. He slowly got up and began to walk around the den. He then turned his head to his items. He then looked down at the camera that remained untouched. He got a little closer. His eyes grew wide. He then saw images of his family. His mother, father, sister, and Waya smiling. The next image would be Julius telling him what he did to them. His father being stabbed in the back, his mother's neck being snapped, his sister being killed as well, and Waya's mask breaking. He then had a horrible revelation. All this could have been prevented if he didn't have that thing. That darn experiment from Julius. In his head the words, your fault, began to sound off. He began to shake, the pain was unbearable. He held back tears. He was taught to be strong. He continued to shake and just stare at the camera. The images of his family, the words in his head, the pain in his chest only grew. It was like he was holding his breath. He didn't know wether this was normal to feel this way or not. He just knew he was feeling pain. He then felt a presence behind him. He dared not turn around. He then felt that presence envelope him in a hug he looked down at the paws and noticed they were Kate's. "I am so sorry Dean," she said.
"I'm fine," he spoke.
She then turned him around. He could see that everyone was up, and watching the spectacle.
"You, are definitely not fine," she spoke. "You don't have to hold that in. You can show emotion. I would be concerned if you didn't."
"I'm...fine..." he tried to hold in the tears a little bit longer.
"Buddy," spoke Humphrey. "You are shaking. Just let it out."
Everything that Dean has been forced to endure. Leaving his family, his home, being forced to fight for his life, all this weighed down on the boys conscience. He held it all in. He tried to show no fear, but a little showed in some moments while he was staying here. For the most part, he dared not to reveal any of the demons he was fighting on the inside. Tears began streaming down the boys face.
"Why," he whispered. "Why did they have to be taken from me."
Kate grabbed him and held him tight. He began to wail for the loss of his family. His cries were loud, even when some were muffled in Kate's fur. He then felt more bodies envelope him. It was Humphrey and the pups. He continued to just cry and let everything he has been holding in out. He cried for what felt like ages to him, but were only a short moment for everyone else. Everyone just stayed by his side while Kate and Humphrey reassured him that it was ok. Soon his cries quieted down to mere sniffles.
"I...sniff...am ...alone...sniff." Kate looked down at him.
"Hey, you're not alone," she spoke. "Look around you." He slowly turned his head to see everyone around him. He then turned his head back into Kate's fur.
"I...am...the last of my...kind." He then looked up at her.
She just looked down at him. This whole thing was breaking everyone's heart. Kate didn't say anything to him. She didn't know what to say. She just held him closer to her. Soon, his crying stopped, and the sniffles began to cease as well.
"You know, I always have a plan for everything that has happened to me. I turned into a pup, so I could blend in with you guys. I saved the pups with my plan, and I saved Runt with my plan. That's how I've always been. I always have a plan, but this is something else. I didn't take this into account. I've got nothing. I don't know."
Humphrey then spoke.
"Of course you wouldn't know what to do," he spoke. "You can't plan for these kinds of things. You need time to process. Dean, take time and grieve."
Dean looked up at him, and then back at the camera.
"How do I do that," he asked.
"Everyone has their way of grieving," said Humphrey. "You have to find your own way."
"Ok." Said Dean. "I think I just need time."
"Ok, take all the time you need," said Kate.
For the next three days, Dean remained in the den. He told the family he wanted time to think. He wanted to be alone. They let him be, but after three days, he received visitors. All of them told him the same thing. They were sorry for his loss. Garth and Lilly are sorry, Eve and Winston are sorry, even Tony is sorry. The pups have been trying to lift Dean's spirits, and asking him to play. He just said not now, and continued to do what he has been doing in the three days, looking through his personal items, laying down, eating, drinking, and sleeping.
He was then awoken from his slumber by someone grabbing him by the scruff.
"What did I do," asked Dean.
He then looked around to see that he was being carried by Humphrey, while the pups and Kate began walking with him.
"You have been in the den for three days," she spoke. "We are going to spend some quality time as a family. We are going log boarding."
"So, I have been pup-napped for fun family activities even though I am not even apart of the family?"
"Yes you have. Would you have done anything today if we didn't."
"Uh...no. Ok, what is log boarding? Seeing as I am not getting out of this activity."
"It is something Humphrey created. It will be the pups and your first time, so we will explain when we get there. It is a lot of fun."
"Great, a new surprise," spoke Dean with sarcasm.
Once they made it to a very high hill, Humphrey moved half of a hollow log in sight of everyone.
"Ok pups, this is a log board," began Humphrey. He then moved it to the edge of the hill. "Everyone hop in."
First, the pups jumped in, Dean reluctantly jumped in, and finally Kate and Humphrey. It was Runt, Claudette, Stinky, Dean, Kate, and Humphrey in order. Dean looked down and connected the dots.
"Oh no," he said.
"Are you ready Dean," asked Humphrey. He then began to push the log.
"No, wait I didn't sign up for thiiiiisssss," the log went down hill. The log sped down the hill at an extremely quick rate of speed. Dean had his eyes closed. He then heard the pups laughing and yelling. He then heard Kate tell him to open his eyes. He opened one eye to see his surroundings. He felt the wind blow by him. He opened both his eyes, and ,for the first time in a while, he smiled.
" THIS IS GREAT," he yelled. He began to laugh with the pups. He was having so much fun flying by tree after tree that he didn't notice the obstruction in the road.
"Mr. Humphrey, I am having fun and all, but would you happen to know about any way to stop."
"No, why."
"Oh no reason, just the ROCK IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD!"
Everyone began paying attention once they heard rock. It was too late to turn. They hit the rock, and went flying. Kate grabbed Humphrey and held onto him. Dean shifted in his human form, grabbed Stinky and Claudette, but Runt was the challenge to grab. He grabbed both pups with one arm, and Runt was above them. Dean extended his arm, and caught Runt like a football.
"Yea-," before he could finish, they slammed into a snowdrift.
"Pups," yelled Kate. "Where are you?"
Stinky and Claudette popped their heads out of the drift, and looked at their parent's.
"Where's Runt and Dean," asked Humphrey.
As soon as he finished that sentence, Dean lifted Runt out of the snow. Soon, Dean poked his head out of the snow.
"I GOT HIM," screamed Dean in excitement.
Everyone smiled. Dean began to laugh. He managed to get himself out of the snow, and wiped himself off.
"Mr. Humphrey," he spoke.
"Yes Dean."
"I think you need to work on the brakes, but can we please do that again?"
"I don't know," he said.
"Please, Dad," began Runt. "It was so much fun."
"Yeah, can we mom," began Claudette.
"It was so much fun," began Stinky.
The three pups and the human got real close to the adults.
"Pleaaaaassssseee," they said in unison. Humphrey looked at his mate, and the adults gave in.
"Ok," said Humphrey. "We'll go a few more times."
"Yeah," said the pups and Dean in unison. Dean shifted, and they went about five more times. They then went home with big smiles on their faces. Dean was having the time of his life. It made him think about his family, and his mother's last words. "I just want to to be happy," they echoed in his mind. Right now, he was pretty happy, but he knew that there was still some matters that needed his attention. He was taken out of his thoughts when everyone laid down in the den.
"So Dean," began Humphrey. "Did you have fun today?"
"Yes sir, I had a blast."
"I am glad to hear that. I hoped you would."
"I needed that. I needed that fun to come back. I really did have fun. Thank you all for taking me on your family activity."
"You're welcome," said Kate. "I guess you became an honorary member of the family."
"I guess I did."
The rest of the day consisted of Dean playing with the family, and making plans for his next move.
Hey guys, Samasaurus here. I just wanted to thank everyone who is reading this story. I also wanted to point out that I changed Humphrey's eye color for a reason. Blue eyes are not seen in wolves. It is a dog eye color, and is seen in wolf pups. I base the wolves as accurate as possible. The wolves are pretty accurate in my story in physical features. Know that I pointed that out. Thank you again for reading my story, and more parts shall come in the near future. Goodbye and have a great day.
