Chapter Three: Sami
"And finally, Mercedes, you're on peds with Dr. Evans," Izzie said.
"Who's Dr. Evans?" Mercedes asked.
"New peds attending, it's his first day," Izzie explained. Mercedes nodded.
Just then, a tall, blonde man came over to them.
"I'm Sam Evans," he said, shaking Izzie and Mercedes' hands.
"Nice to meet you," Izzie said. "This is Mercedes Jones, she's on your service today."
"Alright, let's go," he said.
"Could you please just talk to me?" Alex asked. Quinn shook her head, starting to walk away.
"You've been avoiding me," he said.
"I know," Quinn told him.
"Y'know, if you're not interested, you could just say so," he pointed out.
Quinn looked at him for a moment, before shaking her head, and walking away. -
"This is Lincoln McSmyth, seven years old, admitted for unexplained seizures ever since a recent head injury," Dr. Shepard said.
Kurt nodded, taking notes.
"Hummel, take him for an MRI, and page me once you have the results," Derek instructed.
"Dr. Sam!" said an excited little girl, as he and Mercedes entered her room.
"Hi Leilanie," he said, giving her a fist bump.
"This is Dr. Jones, she's going to help me today," he explained to her. Mercedes smiled at her.
"Are you a doctor too?" the little girl asked.
"I am," Mercedes said, nodding.
"Have you ever seen Paw patrol?" The girl asked her.
"I've seen a few episodes, my younger cousins love it," she said.
"You know Leilanie, I should talk to Dr. Mercedes for a few minutes," he said, and Leilanie's mom nodded.
"She was admitted for a small bump on her shoulder, which turned out to be a terrioma," Sam explained. "We're removing it this evening, if you'd like to scrub in," he said.
Mercedes nodded. "I would love to."
"I don't understand, there's not a single abnormality," Dr. Shepard said, looking over Lincoln's MRI results.
"What about that?" Asked Kurt, pointing to a small blur in the image.
Dr. Shepard looked for a moment, before shaking his head. "That's just a blurry spot."
"But what if it's an epidural hematoma?" Kurt asked.
"It's not," Said Derek. "I have other patients to check on, you tell his mom that we don't have any new ideas."
"But doctor, what if," Kurt started.
"There's no new information," Derek interrupted.
Kurt made a face of disgust, before looking back at the scans. He was sure the small blur was something.
Sam looked over a to-do list. "Next up, we have discharges," he said.
"Do you do your own discharges?" asked Mercedes.
Sam nodded. "I like to do the entire process myself, it's easier on kids if they have someone familiar through their whole hospital stay," he explained.
"That makes sense," Mercedes replied, and Sam nodded again.
"This is Melanie Banger, three days post op for a heart transplant. She's being discharged today." Sam said.
"Wow, she's being discharged after only three days?" Mercedes asked, impressed.
Sam nodded. "It really is true that kids bounce back faster."
Mercedes was in awe. She had never really thought about going into peds, but in this moment, she was really loved the idea.
"I believe he may have hydrocephalus," Kurt explained. "It's a condition where a build up of spinal fluid near the brain causes brain damage."
Lincoln's parents nodded. "Can you fix it?" Asked one of his moms.
"Well, I can't, but Dr. Shepard can," Kurt said.
"So, where is Dr. Shepard?" Asked his other mom.
"Right here," said Derek, clearly annoyed.
"D-Dr. Shepard. I didn't see you there," said Kurt.
"Dr. Hummel, can I talk to you outside for a moment?"
Kurt nodded, and followed his attending out of the room.
"You never give a diagnosis that you are unsure of," Dr. Shepard said, a tone of disappointment in his voice.
"But sir, I am sure of it. He has all of the signs!" Kurt said.
"You're off the case," Dr. Shepard said.
"But Dr. Shepard-"
"Go find something else to do."
Kurt stared at him for a moment, before nodding, and walking away.
"Hey, are you ok?" George asked.
"Oh, yeah, I just lost a patient," Rachel said.
"That's too bad," George said. Rachel nodded. "You should come inside," George said. "It's raining pretty hard."
"Yeah, I just need a minute." George nodded, and moved to stand next to her.
"What are you doing?" Asked Rachel.
"Waiting for you," he said.
"Why? Aren't you cold?"
"Just a bit. But I'm fine waiting."
"But why?"
"Because I really care about you," he said, turning to face her.
"Really?" She asked, quiter.
He nodded. Then, Rachel leaned in, and kissed him.
"Quinn, this is the last time I'm going to ask. Do you want anything more out of this?"
Quinn just stood there for a moment before nodding at Alex. Only, the nod turned into her shaking her head. "No," she told him softly. "I do want to be with you."
He looked at her, and then smiled, leaning in to kiss her.
Kurt was walking to lunch, when he heard something. Lincoln's parents. And they were yelling for help.
Kurt ran into the room, to find Lincoln unconscious, his blood pressure having dropped extremely low. "Page Dr. Shepard!" He ordered a nurse that had come into the room.
The nurse paged him, and he was to the room in minutes. "I need to take him to the OR now!" Dr. Shepard said, as the nurses prepped him. "Kurt, I need an intern, come with me."
"Kurt, I am so sorry. I should've listened more. You saved that kid's life," Derek said.
Kurt nodded.
A/N I'm sorry it took so long to update! I'll be back to frequent-ish updates now. Also I noticed a few errors while re-reading the last chapter, namely that in the end, it was supposed to be Quinn asking Alex not to say anything, not vice versa.
